Two-thirds of all raw materials put into the global economy every year end up as waste. (Yep, let that sink in for a bit. Unacceptable!) On the podcast Love Zero Waste, we facilitate the conversation with leading activists, entrepreneurs, designers, policymakers and scientists, working on solutions across the planet, to create large-scale change for a truly circular, zero waste future. Our hopes with Love Zero Waste is to inspire and educate our listeners (yes, you!) on how to lead the efforts to close the loop. Companies, government, civil society, education - we’re all in this together. Welcome to the zero waste revolution!

In this episode, we're doing something new. One of our listeners, Cameron Cooper of Coopers Refillery, an entrepreneur in the zero waste space, has submitted a very interesting business development question. We set out to answer the question; how to adequately price a supermarket refill station. Due to the limited competition, as of now, this is a bit tricky. Together with the experts on zero waste, circular economy and business development: Fanny Näslund of Vågen Zero Waste Stores, Verena Kassar of Das Gramm Zero Waste Stores and Maira Babri of Örebro University, Evelina and Malin share some key perspectives and actions to help out. Would you like to submit a zero waste question to the show - business or otherwise? Shoot us a DM over at Love Zero Waste on Instagram, or email us at hello@lovezerowaste.biz. You can submit your question in writing - or even better through a voice recording. With a bit of luck, we might answer your burning question on the show. Special thanks to Cameron Cooper for being patient with us, as we were experimenting to find the right show format, to our experts Fanny Näslund, Verena Kassar and Maira Babri and to Magdalena Dirr for lending us your voice. Ivana Steiner is a designer specialised in luxury hospitality, and she's recently developed a great interest in zero waste. A few weeks ago, she presented her first zero waste product: a beautiful, stainless steel kitchen, including compost and a herbal garden. The kitchen has already been featured by several international media outlets, including Treehugger, DesignBoom and DWELL. In our conversation with Ivana, learn more about transforming customer research into beautiful and functional design, working with an expert focus group, and approaching minimalism, climate change, and slowing down - all through a zero waste kitchen. This Instagram Live is the first interview in a series we call "Three things I've learned", where we talk to experts in the zero waste space about their most important learnings. Ivana reached out to us during the spring as she was looking for feedback on the kitchen concept. We helped her put together a small focus group with experts on zero waste, grocery shopping, cooking and minimalism. A big shoutout to Andrea Lunzer, Eva-Bettina Gruber and Sarah Schalk for contributing to this process. All of which have also been guests on the Love Zero Waste podcast! Joâo Bernardo Casali of the B-corp Ionica shares the journey of Noronha, the first Brazilian territory to ban all single-use plastic items - at once. Learn more about critical actions as cities and regions turn to zero waste: the importance of public-private partnerships (and a textbook example of a successful one!); of gathering key stakeholders under one vision; moving beyond the traditional EPR (extended producer responsibility) and pushing for more far-reaching bans and legislations; as well as the challenges of reaching beyond the low-hanging fruits of waste-diversion and much more. ======== CALL TO ACTION! - Read this publication "The Zero Waste Masterplan - A Guide to Building Just and Resilient Zero Waste Cities" by GAIA US and Canada. https://www.paperturn-view.com/us/gaia/gaia-zero-waste-masterplan?pid=MTE115576 - Listen to our Zero Waste Trends in Europe podcast episode. Claims, labels, logos and symbols… Check your pantry, in the grocery store, the stuff you buy online. You might go as far as saying that all across the board, products are covered with symbols claiming eco-friendliness, solar power usage, recyclability, plastic content reduced, bioplastics, circularity, saving soil, saving water, no by-catch, compostable, biodegradable… something with green arrows… But what do they all mean, and despite the intentions, how do they end up contributing to the waste pile, rather than reducing it? As consumers we’re navigating narrow paths, trying to make mindful purchases. Surrounded by all these claims, labels, logos and symbols it’s easy to get confused or even angry. We’re all just trying to do the right thing. Right!? Guests are Naomi Scott-Mearns, Consumers International and Seema Shandil, Consumer Council of Fiji. In this episode, you’ll learn how consumer confusion adds to the waste pile, where the responsibility to clear out this mess lies, what some of the great resources are for companies that genuinely want to help their customers, what we can learn from the development of nutrition labelling, and how the island nation Fiji deals with waste collection and the consequences of trash in the ocean. The microplastic pollution in our oceans is a growing problem since the participles are invisible to the naked eye, and even more so, because it’s everywhere, and there’s no way of knowing how their occurrence may threaten life on earth in the long run. Our guest Sjors van der Meer, designer and co-founder of the Floating Coconet started out with an ambition of using biomimicry design elements to rid rivers of plastics before it arrives in the ocean, and has now pivoted towards gathering microplastic fibres at one of the pollution sources - our washing machines. Learn how the Floating Coconet, inspired by how manta rays and basking sharks filter food from the water, work to change how garments are washed and collect microplastics fibres at the source. On the show we’re often talking about designing out waste - but with biomimicry, we’re taking things even further. Malin and Evelina here! We’re popping by to tell you that we’re working in season three of Love Zero Waste! In our podcast, we talk to experts - entrepreneurs, designers, activists, and scientists - trying to drastically reduce the 2 billion tons of solid waste that humanity generates every year. These experts are working to break the link between economic growth and increased waste generation. And mind you, that number of 2 billion tons per year is rapidly rising, and it’s impacting our health and economy, and polluting the oceans and lands. Without urgent action, the 2 billion tons of waste we humans generate every year, will increase by 70% on current levels by 2050. We’ve created two seasons of Love Zero Waste and are now working on the third one. On the show, we’re tackling the seemingly boring topics of waste and waste management. But we’re looking at it from a ZERO waste perspective. ZERO waste makes all the difference. Waste is a sign of system failure. ZERO waste is about designing out waste. Not by burning or burying it, not even by recycling it. But by removing it from the equation. Everything stays in the loop. In season 3 we will dive deep into the topics of electronics, food and flames but also zero waste cities and what we can learn from imitating nature in design processes. Now is the time to stop climate change. With Love Zero Waste we want to show that the only way we can do this - is together. Season 3 is coming later this winter! We’re drowning in everyday single-use items - plastic and otherwise! Toothbrushes, medication and grocery packaging, straws, tampons, coffee-to-go cups, paper and plastic bags, stockings, newspapers… The list is never-ending. In this episode, we’re meeting experts Annemarie Harant of Erdbeerwoche and Afreen Kamran of Eco.pal. Annemarie and Afreen are entrepreneurs working to educate and provide alternatives to single-use items on a large scale. Annemarie and Afreen share insights on fighting the habit to use and immediately dispose of everyday items, and what is being done through policy changes and mobilising youth to make a change. Annemarie and Afreen are driven by strong numbers. They have both done surveys on human behavior and observed what items end up in the bin or being flushed down the toilet. Moreover, they share a passion for not only making a change for themselves but for the masses. Prepare to get inspired! Also, Evelina and Malin reveal their own favorite single-use items. Could all single-use items be swapped for multiple-use? Perhaps. At least if you have an ear-scratching affinity... Building zero waste (with the winning teams of Denmark’s Circular Construction Challenge)

As the world’s population grows and urbanization is on the rise, we continue to build and generate massive amounts of waste. Globally, more than 2 billion tons of solid waste is generated every year. And don’t fall off your chair now. About half of this comes from building materials. Steel, concrete, wood, you name it. Is zero waste in the building and construction industry even possible!? Now - or in the future!? In 2018, the Danish philanthropic association Realdania launched the “Circular Construction Challenge” to kickstart the circular transition in the building industry. In this episode, Malin meets up with the three winning teams of the challenge in Copenhagen to hear more about their work and how they will create change. The winning teams are represented by experts Niels Jakubiak Andersen from ReSkur, Maria Ekblad from Gentrae, Hanne Tine Ring Hansen and Jon Wedersøe Strunge from Waste to biomaterial. When 3D-printing becomes mainstream, and mycelium grown construction is tomorrow - then what will we see in the future? Wait a minute! Building houses...using funghi? This is science fiction! Evelina admits she’s a StarTrek fan and sees the connection with their use of the mycelial network. This is not the same thing, right? Also, the concept of regenerative buildings and our cultural connection to buildings captures our imagination. Since very few plants can grow without humus, we’re dependent on it. Let's dig into the science, business and awareness building of composting! In this episode, Evelina pays a visit to Alfred Grand, founder of Vermigrand, an earthworm compost and humus business in Austria. Malin meets up with Hana Nur Auliana, growth hacker of Waste4Change, a compost, recycling and consulting company in Indonesia. Moreover, we chat to Ben Conard, marketing director of Noissue a compostable mailer business in New Zealand. Alfred explains how composting works, he dives into hot and cold options, the commercial production of Vermigrand’s organic humus soil, and all the ways to keep earthworms happy and eager to do their work. Hana talks about Waste4Change’s programs “Send Your Waste” and “Zero Waste to Landfill”, and the efficiency of the Indonesian black soldier fly. Ben shares Noissue’s insights on composting as an incremental part of your business model and enabling for businesses and end-consumers to make environmentally sustainable choices. We’re back! This is episode six, the first episode of season two of the Love Zero Waste podcast: “How plastics revolutionised our lives and are now destroying the planet”. Experts in this episode are Maggie Lee, Lead of Market Transformation at WWF Singapore and Anders Ankarlid, founder of A Good Company. Plastics, plastic pollution, renewable plastic substitutes are hot topics at the moment. So what better topic to kick off the season with than plastics!? Plastics have revolutionised our lives in so many ways. It’s created significant improvements in hygiene, health care, transportation, packaging food and beverages, and so much more. However, there’s a backside to plastics. We’ve all seen the photos of dead or even desiccated animals with bellies full of plastics. Plastics are everywhere, and the consequences are devastating. This episode’s experts Maggie Lee, Lead of Market Transformation at WWF Singapore and Anders Ankarlid, founder of A Good Company help us understand why some businesses are hesitant to join in the effort to switch to sustainable alternatives to plastics, cases when businesses have tried to do good - but actually made things worse, what some of the real and working solutions to remove plastics are, and that stone paper is actually a thing (!). Also, Evelina gets annoyed at the people who keep obsessing about the focus on straws. Let’s dive in! Oh, and apart from kicking off season two, we have another cause for celebration. Since we released the first episodes of Love Zero Waste in January, we’ve had 8000 unique listeners across the different podcast platforms: Spotify, Apple Podcast, Google Podcast etc. For us, that’s big! Malin and Evelina meet up to discuss and share their impressions from the first season and summarize the three key factors that are most important for creating a zero waste society. However, they are not sure of…. the last one? What would you add? Moreover, Evelina shares her feeling of a stomach ache because the waste problem is so big and Malin has been busy trying to grasp the enormous amount of trash that we humans generate every year. Finding the best equivalent for two billion tonnes of waste is not easy though. After calculating soccer fields and blue whales, she ends up with the classic example of ship containers. But does that make it easier to understand? Either way, a systematic shift is needed.
