And on today's show, we are wandering into the deep dark forest of the sub-conscious to try and discover the sources of our fears, the strange and ridiculous ways in which they manifest in everyday life, and how we might confront and conquer the monsters that scare us!  Fear is really a fascinating thing. It can truly come in so many forms - both rational and irrational. It starts in our minds, but it can also overtake our bodies. Fear can stop us from taking risks but it can also help to spike the adrenaline that we need to run away from a mountain lion. Resilience is the ability to ‘bounce back' from life's difficulties. For many young people it is vital to help them develop resilience strategies that promote well-being and develop coping mechanisms. Many resilient teenagers are seen as resourceful and are emotionally and mentally balanced. Andrew Fuller is a clinical psychologist and Generation Next speaker, he describes resilience as “the happy knack of being able to bungy jump through the pitfalls of life – to rise above adversity and obstacles.” Tips for building resilience in children*1. Make connectionsTeach children how to make friends and develop empathy. Encourage them to be a friend in order to get friends. At school, watch to make sure that one child is not being isolated. Connecting with people provides social support and strengthens resilience.2. Teach children to help othersChildren who may feel helpless can be empowered by helping others. Ask for help with a task they can master. At school, brainstorm with children about ways they can help others.3. Daily routineFollowing a routine can be comforting to children, especially younger children who crave structure in their lives. Encourage children to develop their own routines.4. Take a breakAlthough it is important to stick to routines, endlessly worrying can be counter-productive. Show children how to focus on something besides what's worrying them.5. Self-care for childrenTeach child the importance of making time to eat properly, groom themselves, exercise and rest. Children need ‘down time' to relax, so make sure that not all free time is filled with a scheduled activity.6. GoalsTeach children to set reasonable goals and move toward them one step at a time. Moving toward that goal and receiving praise for doing so will focus children on what they have accomplished.7. Nurture a positive self-viewHelp children remember ways that they have successfully handled hardships in the past and how this can help them handle future challenges. Help children learn to trust themselves to solve problems and make appropriate decisions.8. Be optimisticEven when children are facing very painful events, help them look at the situation in a broader context. A positive outlook enables children to see the good things in life and keep going even in the hardest times.9. Self-discoveryChange and tough times are often when children learn the most about themselves. Help children to see that this is a good time to find out “what they are made of.”  Change can be scary for young people, help them to see that change is part of life.10. Make home a safe havenIn high school, taunting and bullying can intensify – home should be a haven, especially as your teen encounters more freedom and choices and looks to home to be a constant, safe and emotionally secure place in his or her life. The Resilience DoughnutDeveloped in Australia, The Resilience Doughnut builds resilience by considering both the internal qualities of a resilient person as well as the factors in the person's environment which support and interact with those internal qualities. It is simple and practical and can be taught in a workshop format to school students. SAY HI! A significant life is simpler than you think. In a culture where bigger is seen as better, it's easy to wonder if your quick prayer between errands or the short note you text a friend means anything in God's kingdom. Today's guest, Rachael Adams, reminds us that every little thing we do can go a long way in God's hands. Rachael has just released her devotional book, A Little Goes a Long Way: 52 Days to a Significant Life, where she shares personal and biblical stories of how God took something small and made it something significant. She Says, "The reality is everybody [God] used was ordinary and He used mundane moments for everybody. And I think we sometimes read scripture in these big highlight moments and forget the daily, ordinary, mundane ways that they lived, too, and I realized a significant life is simpler than we think." Rachael also shares how little invitations that were given to her caused her to grow in her relationship with God. And I share a personal story of how one devotion in particular spoke to me in such a meaningful way. Rachael is truly a genuine and godly woman who wants to encourage others to watch how God can take our everyday actions and transform them for His eternal purpose. I promise this episode will inspire you to keep doing small things in great faith. Quotes From Rachael "The reality is everybody He used was ordinary, and He used the mundane moments for everybody. And I think we sometimes read scripture in these big highlight moments and forget the daily, ordinary, mundane ways that they lived, too, and I realized a significant life is simpler than we think." "I believe if you could see yourself through God's eyes it would change your world. If we really believed that it would change the way we lived our life... every single moment." "If nothing is too insignificant for the Savior of the world, nothing is too insignificant for me." "That's what the enemy wants us to do, to be so discouraged and not believe that it matters and to stay stuck in feeling insignificant because then we don't do anything at all, and we bury our talents... There's so much at stake if we don't [do anything]." Scripture and Resources Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin... - Zechariah 4:10 Rachael Adams podcast, The Love Offering and her new devotional book A Little Goes a Long Way: 52 Days to a Significant Life. Sonya Baker is an accomplished singer and gifted educator who shared her journey so eloquently. Please listen through the end, where you will hear from Sonya about what it meant to her to sing "Ride the Chariot" as part of her time in the Glee Club. Thanks to the Yale Glee Club we have a a recording of Sonya singing her powerful solo of that spiritual, which is a real treat. Here is a bit more about Sonya: Dr. Sonya Gabrielle Baker, soprano, made her Carnegie Hall debut with conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, singing music of Aaron Copland. Noted for her performances of American music, Baker has been heard in concert both nationally and internationally, including performances in Havana, Cuba with the Yale Alumni Chorus and at the World Equestrian Games opening ceremonies with the American Spiritual Ensemble. Baker has toured regularly as a soloist with the American Spiritual Ensemble, a professional ensemble whose mission is to keep the American Spiritual alive. She appears on their recording entitled The Spirituals and in the PBS documentary by the same name. Baker's debut solo recording, SHE SAYS, featuring art songs of American Women composers, was released in 2004, a year after she appeared as soloist on the Yale Alumni Chorus tour to Moscow singing at the Kremlin. Baker's scholarly agenda is focused on crossing boundaries and disciplines, perhaps best exemplified by her solo recording and her lecture recital on Marian Anderson's 1939 Easter Concert. Baker has presented this lecture recital nationwide and is currently working on a second recording in tribute to Marian Anderson featuring Lieder and spiritual arrangements. Highlights of Baker's operatic roles include Elisabetta in Verdi's Don Carlo, Donna Anna in Mozart's Don Giovanni, Monisha in Joplin's Treemonisha, and the title role in the U.S. premiere of Mascagni's Pinotta. A former fellow with the American Council on Education, Baker has held leadership positions in higher education, serving as Associate Dean at JMU and Murray State University, and with various professional organizations: as board member for the Kentucky Arts Council, Kentucky Governor for the National Association of Teachers of Singing and currently a board member for the Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru) and the Yale Alumni Chorus. A graduate of Leadership Kentucky, LEAD Virginia and the Society for College and University Planning Institute, Baker is fully committed to advocating for diverse communities and environments that embrace multiple peoples and perspectives. To this end, she has served on multiple university committees and has been a mentor both formally and informally throughout her career. Baker holds degrees from Yale, Indiana and Florida State Universities.

In our last episode we talked about how, after a LONG time, real-life, in-person networking events are a thing once more. Some of you might be full of joy at the idea, but an equal number of you will be horrified that you're going to have to get out there once again. So how can you make the best out of these opportunities and put yourself and your business out there in a way that still reflects your true, authentic self? To help you out, my guest today is Carrie Sharpe, a Communication Consultant, Speaker, and Co-Owner of He Says, She Says. She is also the co-host of the Speaking with Ryan & Carrie Sharpe podcast. With over twenty-five years of experience and training, Carrie coaches clients in communication and public speaking skills.  We talk about how in-person networking (and pitching) should be like courtship. And don't worry, introverts - we've got your back! Topics covered include: The work that Carrie does alongside her husband, Ryan, and how they serve their clients What a networking plan is, and why you should be thinking about creating one How to approach planning for events of different sizes - from smaller in-person networking events, all the way up to multi-day conferences The way to build relationships at events without seeming gross - including how to create your ‘elevator pitch', and the importance of leveraging referrals from the people you connect with How to navigate large in-person networking events if you're an introvert - even down to where to stand in a large room Tactics to make the most out of the connections you make at events - making sure that we're engaging in dialogue and conversation rather than word-vomiting Why Carrie doesn't like to be pitched and prefers to be courted - with an example of what she means! I hope you found this episode useful and that it has given you some tactics which you can put into your next IRL events. So let's start there. In his early twenties, Andy cut his Sports Science degree short to become a Buddhist monk. For over 10 years, his meditation training took him across the world to Nepal, India, Burma, Thailand, Australia and Russia. Eventually, he was ordained at a Tibetan monastery in the Indian Himalayas. After completing his monastic commitment, Andy returned to the UK with the huge-yet-simple goal of teaching meditation and mindfulness to as many people as possible. To demystify the mystical, Andy set up a meditation consultancy and began working with politicians, athletes (that sports science background finally came in handy), and business leaders. That's when Andy met Rich Pierson, who needed help dealing with the stress of the advertising world. Before long, Andy and Rich were skill-swapping meditation for business advice. That's when Headspace was born.Bio:Caroline Pay is Chief Creative Officer at Headspace, where she directs the company's dynamic, award-winning creative team. She guides all creative activities and serves as a thought leader to ensure Headspace continues to grow its leadershipposition worldwide, including digital, experiential and traditional advertising, as well as all marketing campaigns and initiatives. She served on the senior management team of the 400-person advertising agency and was the creative lead on accounts including the LRS portfolio, the United Nations and London's Metropolitan Police. During her tenure, Pay was also named one of Ad Age's “Women to Watch Europe 2018” and was nominated as one of the “World's Most Creative Women” by The Drum. Before joining Grey, she was Deputy Executive Creative Director at BBH London, developing and leading a 120-person creative department with clients including Tesco, BBC and domestic violence nonprofit Refuge. She also helped shape the agency's new specialty practices, including BBH Live and Black Sheep Studios. In addition, Pay affected change in the advertising industry's diversity agenda with her key involvement in “The Great British Diversity Experiment,” “The 3% Conference,” “SheSays,” and “Cream,” among other platforms. Pay spent a total of four years at BBH, first as Creative Director, and later as Managing Partner and Head of Creative Development. During her time at BBH, where she first met Headspace CEO Rich Pierson, she also ran accounts for iconic brands such as Levi's, Baileys, and Google. After launching her career at KesselsKramer Amsterdam, Pay transitioned to ad agency Mother London, where she served a total of 10 years leading award-winning work for brands ranging from Coca-Cola, Dr. Pepper, and Boots to GREAT Britain, Amnesty International, and the creation of FRANK—the British government's drug helpline for young people, now in its 16th year. So, she's the perfect person to ask how to get our creative mojo back and feel more inspired again. Having lived in the Amazon jungle when a toddler, she has a fearless streak, which she encourages in others - especially women - in order to create a better world. Her expertise is making businesses stronger and more creative and to take positive action - and she's full of practical advice about what we, as individuals can do, to take creative action for better lives (and, indeed, as she says, a better world). She's passionate about helping women find their voices; a mission she has dedicated much of her working life to in setting up the global creative network SheSays. Why? Because she reckons the world would be a better place if more women, in particular, found their voices. She's convinced, for example, there would be less wars and less stupid advertising! Some of the most famous minds of the 19th century became swept up in the allure of Spiritualism and mediumship. No less among these had been Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who became one of the staunchest defenders of Spiritualism, even authoring a two-volume history of the religion. However, his friend Harry Houdini, while initially open to the possibility of mediumship as an avenue toward making contact with those who had crossed over, soon became convinced that it was a sham. In addition to placing strains on his friendship with Doyle, the experience pushed Houdini toward the pursuit of exposing all mediumship and paranormal claims as nonsense.  However, following Houdini's death on Halloween in 1926, even the world's greatest magician would become the target of attempts with reaching the dead through seances and mediumship. On this special Halloween edition of the program, we explore Houdini and Doyles relationship with the occult, and how even in death they each remained highly influential on the world of the occult. When getting started in any field, particularly one as unforgiving as journalism, having a mentor is essential. On today's episode of The Biscuit CLT Podcast, we've got another edition of our Who Built Me series, this time we're featuring the host and lead reporter of She Says and The List, Sarah Delia. Sarah Delia talks about a mentor she had in college named Martha who worked at a radio station at James Madison University. Martha had no obligation to pay Sarah a moment of time, but after Sarah cleverly put herself in Martha's path, Martha began to take Sarah under her wing and helped to shape her into the journalist she is today. Currently a Creative Director at Havas /Chicago, Karen has also led creative work at Under Armour, Pappas Group, Johannes Leonardo, and R/GA, working on projects for Google, Nike, and Walmart among others.Karen is a champion for female creative talent and leadership in the industry. In January 2016, she founded the Washington DC chapter of SheSays, a global networking platform for women and, along with hosting monthly panels throughout DC, has grown the community to over 500 people.A colleague said of Karen that she has an innate ability to explain complex issues in relatable terms, a quality that, in my view, is sorely lacking in most forms of communications today. I can also say that when we met in NY last fall, I was immediately taken with her gentle ability to put people at ease and draw them in to conversation.
