Perspectives et Future of Work L’incertitude domine les débats sur le Future of Work.

While current conversations about global heating tend to center around a few well-established pieces of science, we don't often hear about the scientists and leaders working at the frontier of what is still unknown about Earth's systems. This includes unpredictable tipping points and cascading effects of our rapidly changing climate, as well as the unconventional adaptation strategies that might help us maintain a stable planet. What is the newest climate science being researched right now, and what areas are we still needing to explore as we fight for a livable future?  In this episode, Nate is joined by climate philanthropist Kelly Erhart to discuss the urgent state of climate science and emerging response strategies beyond traditional mitigation and adaptation. Kelly explains the climate research that reveals increasingly alarming risks, including natural feedback loops such as glacier collapse, declining albedo (the reflectivity of Earth), and methane release from melting permafrost. They also discuss frontier emergency climate interventions such as oceanic carbon sequestration, atmospheric methane removal, and glacier stabilization strategies, among others – while emphasizing that none of these replace the need for the drastic reduction of emissions. What are the biggest climate questions that are currently being researched? How can an interdisciplinary approach help us better understand the climate mitigation and adaptation options available to us? And finally, how do we, especially the youngest among us, maintain hope and motivation to continue working towards better outcomes for humanity and the planet?  (Conversation recorded on September 26th, 2025)    About Kelly Erhart: Kelly Erhart is the Director of Partnerships at Outlier Projects (a climate philanthropy). Her work at Outlier Projects focuses on funding teams that are accelerating research on efforts to improve forecasting of catastrophic risks, and research on tools that could help stabilize climate systems at the necessary speed and scale. Previously, she was a repeat climate non-profit founder and entrepreneur; including co-founding Vesta, a pioneering ocean-based carbon dioxide removal approach. Erhart's multidisciplinary background spans climate technology  development and commercialization, nonprofit leadership, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy. Erhart was also named one of Forbes 30 under 30 for Energy and Green Tech in 2026.   Show Notes and More Watch this video episode on YouTube   Want to learn the broad overview of The Great Simplification in 30 minutes? It's our 600th episode! I know what you're thinking, they don't sound jaded and tired, which could easily be the case, after so many episodes. That's because with every episode, the tone is set by you dear listeners, who continue to send in questions for us to discuss. We've only got nine questions lined up at present, so get 'em in now and you'll be answered quite quickly, maybe even in time for Christmas, wouldn't that be the best present you've ever received!?Alex Kauffmann is back in the listener's chair for his penultimate episode before he buggers off back to college. Has he been  with us too long, or not long enough maybe? Only you can decide.Today's first question comes from Estefania, Jalisco, Mexico - “We're told the new green economy will save us, yet that's still utilising the same system that's destroying us. Green tech, if done well and for the right reasons is the right thing to do, but what we're not told is there's one thing we can all do, that has a positive impact on all areas of climate change, that much green tech doesn't. Eat less meat and dairy”William jumps straight in: he says that one of the biggest contributors to climate change is meat, specifically beef.  So if you could eat less meat, and particularly beef, it would have a better impact, he thinks, than any new technology.Alex explains that while challenges are inevitable, Green Tech is not destined to replicate unsustainable systems. He envisions it developing into an ecosystem, that connects with society, much like nature does, an aspiration that takes time but follows the pattern of past innovations.Stuart recalls warning that investing in green inventions often meant funding big oil companies, which buy up patents, only to shelve them. He argues that these corporations suppress alternatives to maintain dependence on oil, later reintroducing the innovations as if they were entirely new.And the second question for today's charade comes from Vinroy, Linstead, Jamaica - It is a long question, and we only get 4,000 characters to play with, you can find Vinroy's bumper of a question right here: Vinroy's questionAlex notes that while some societies adapt to governmental and economic structures, extreme wealth concentration remains a persistent issue. He adds that cultural differences make universal solutions difficult to implement.William highlights the organization Led by Donkeys, which exposes how the very wealthy can easily obtain foreign citizenship to offshore money and avoid taxes. He emphasizes that some people will always prioritize their own financial interests above all else. There are ways that people can actually get around it by going to organizations like this where they can actually offshore their money. Stuart reflects that while the wealthy and the poor often operate on different value systems, true richness isn't financial. He suggests that instead of chasing flashy wealth, society could adopt a different set of values that doesn't revolve around material accumulation. What do you make of this discussion? Are you curious about the latest innovations in sustainable agriculture? I recently caught up with Charlie Guy, CEO of Let Us Grow, to discuss the fascinating world of advanced aeroponics and its potential to revolutionize greenhouse farming.Charlie shared insights on Let Us Grow's journey from vertical farming to focusing on aeroponics technology for greenhouses. He explained how their advanced aeroponics system offers significant advantages over traditional hydroponic methods, including increased yields, improved plant health, and reduced water usage. Charlie also touched on the company's expansion into global markets and their efforts to educate both industry professionals and the public about the benefits of controlled environment agriculture. We delved into the challenges faced by the vertical farming industry and how Let Us Grow has adapted to changing market conditions. Charlie emphasized the importance of collaboration within the industry and highlighted their partnerships with established greenhouse builders and system integrators. He also discussed their community outreach efforts, such as the Bristol Basil Company initiative, which demonstrates the potential of local food production using advanced growing techniques.Throughout our conversation, Charlie provided valuable insights into the future of controlled environment agriculture and the role of aeroponics in creating more sustainable and resilient food systems. If you're interested in the intersection of technology and agriculture, or simply curious about where your food comes from, this episode offers a fascinating glimpse into the cutting-edge world of advanced growing methods. Thanks to Our SponsorsCEA Summit East - https://indoor.ag/cea-summit-east-2025/Indoor AgCon - https://indoor.ag/Key Takeaways5:07 Shifting focus to glasshouses and partnerships11:40 Biking to GreenTech conference and industry events16:44 Building relationships with government agencies20:21 Bristol Basil Company and local food initiatives28:12 BBC Radio 4 feature on sustainable growing34:57 Challenges of running a company in this environment39:06 Future plans and global expansion goals44:01 Closing thoughts on collaboration in indoor farmingTweetable Quotes"We've taken the rolling bench architecture widely used in the greenhouse industry and integrated our advanced aeroponics technology into it. This means we can partner with numerous Dutch large greenhouse builders to deliver these systems, providing the smarts while they handle the delivery.""There's no point in doing vertical farming unless it's powered by renewable energy. It doesn't make sense from an environmental standpoint to burn fossil fuels to convert them into electrons to power lights to grow plants when the sun is free.""We're showing you can turn disused greenhouses into productive grows that are profitable and give back to your local food community. How can the chemical industry become a driving force for a circular economy? From molecular design to large-scale production, the chemical sector underpins nearly every material stream in the global economy. But transforming it for circularity means rethinking not just processes, but business models, regulation, and collaboration between industry and science. In this episode, speakers from startups, corporates, and research institutions share what it will take to reshape chemistry for a circular future across materials, markets, and supply chains. Recorded live at the CIRCULAR REPUBLIC FESTIVAL 2025, the panel brought together Manuel Häußler from Aevoloop, Gerben Meier from LyondellBasell, Christian Schiller from Cirplus, and Peter Seeberger from CTC. The discussion was moderated by Leonhard Nima from Studio Nima. Are we truly shifting beyond the linear economy or just circling around it? Despite growing pressure on natural systems and the depletion of critical resources, the shift toward a circular economy remains slow and complex. While pioneering efforts have demonstrated circular potential, questions persist about whether we are replacing the linear model or simply repackaging it. In this episode, Sandrine Dixson-Declève, former Co-President of the Club of Rome, stresses the need for systemic change to address both environmental collapse and social injustice. Following her keynote at the CIRCULAR REPUBLIC Festival 2025, she joined Jocelyn Blériot, Executive Lead for Policy and Institutions at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, for a panel discussion moderated by Niclas-Alexander Mauss. Together, they explored what is holding back the circular transition, from cost structures to deeply embedded incentives for extraction. In Canada, they have decided to elect the liberal Mark Carney who believes they can continue on the world economic stage without being a partner with the United States. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) claims everything is up under Trump's first 100 days, but that seems to be more about wishful thinking rather than reality. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt was asked about Amazon's decision to add a “tariff” line to all sales. She accurately calls it political, but before the story can last even a few hours, a call from Donald Trump to Jeff Bezos seems to have killed that idea. At the same time, Wal-Mart is making a push to help small-to-mid sized American companies get their products on their shelves. Now, to the slow-walking Republicans in the House and Senate. I address my frustrations, but am still prepared to give it more time given some insider information from the White House and the significance of wanting to pass the “big beautiful bill” on Independence Day. Seems Mayor Bowser (D-D.C.) might be in some hot water with a trip she made to Qatar in 2023. Another woman thinks she knows the workaround for student debt and tells us how smart she is about it. Ryan shared practical alternatives - like using international patent offices with similar climate fast-track schemes and leveraging the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) to speed things up globally. We also covered the balance between IP protection and open innovation, why patents still matter in the climate crisis, and how to protect ideas early without blowing the budget. If you're working in climate tech, clean energy, or emissions monitoring and need to protect or scale your innovation, this episode is for you.Support the showPodcast supportersI'd like to sincerely thank this podcast's amazing supporters: Lorcan Sheehan Jerry Sweeney Andreas Werner Stephen Carroll Roger Arnold And remember you too can Support the Podcast - it is really easy and hugely important as it will enable me to continue to create more excellent Climate Confident episodes like this one.ContactIf you have any comments/suggestions or questions for the podcast - get in touch via direct message on Twitter/LinkedIn.
