Episode 142. We're starting another monthly series watching one show from beginning to end, discussing season one of the drama series Halt and Catch Fire, created by Christopher Cantwell and Christopher C. Rogers. It's 1983, the dawn of the home computer age. Salesman Joe MacMillian leaves IBM on bad terms and goes to the small Dallas company Cardiff Electric, determined to make them into the next big player in the PC market. His scheme pulls in an idealistic software designer who wants to push computing to the next level, and an obsessive hardware engineer who is still picking up the pieces from his last failed project. This volatile team is determined to make the PC of their dreams, if they can all agree on what that is.The Whatnauts present The Review Show, a weekly book club style podcast for all sorts of pop culture. We cover a variety of genres and mediums — movies, TV shows, comics, anime, manga, audio dramas — picking out a specific piece of entertainment that we can cover in a week's time. Every episode, your intrepid co-hosts Kyle and Melissa dive into the media of the week (with a spoiler warning!), give recommendations, and take turns pitching the next topic. For one episode a month, we check in with continuing coverage on a longer title, like a full TV series or comics run, and follow it all the way to the end. Join us for fun discussions on a wild variety of entertainment you should know!Check out our other podcasts here, or wherever you get your podcasts. This week Brock & Jeremy talk to Christopher C. Rogers, writer, showrunner and executive producer. Chris lives and works in Los Angeles creating television and writing movie scripts. When Chris and Jeremy attended the University of Mary Washington together, Chris thought he would go to law school and Jeremy thought he never world. Now look.Chris describes his thought-process to embrace his desire to be a writer and follow that to LA. Working for Architectural Digest and Disney, he went to UCLA screenwriting class at night. The key for exploring personal passion is having sneaky projects on the side to fuel big dreams. A writer is anyone who writes every day. After 10,000 hours, writers and executive producers are just getting started. We talk about narrative (our own) and mentors (each others) to continue to move forward with our goals. Whether starting a company, leading a product or running a writer's room, leaders must create a safe environment for each person to contribute. Being vulnerable is important so that everyone can celebrate the idea instead of who proposed it. Chris provides an image - concentric rings - for how to build trust from the inside out. Leaders who trust each other create teams that execute so that the best product is delivered to the viewer (or customer). Brock and Jeremy learn how to apply the lessons of creativity and the entertainment industry to our careers and our businesses. Thanks, as always, for listening and support the show. Penultimates (a.k.a second to last, a.k.a the one before the end) are often beautiful works of episodic TV that are favored over the finale by critics and fans alike. Is it a fair fight though? A penultimate has all of the advantages of a finale - fully formed storylines, character development, complicated relationships - yet, none of the added pressure or immense expectation of tying up lose ends, creating closure, and assuring the final moment is both earned and satisfying. Join a wide-ranging panel of creators as they debate the pros and cons of penultimates vs. finales, from both a writer and viewer's perspective - including some of their all time favorites.Episode Guests: Christopher C. Flawed characters can often blur the line between endearing and infuriating. How many times have you wanted to yell at your TV about a choice one of your favorite characters is currently (or continuously) making? Or cheered when they overcame personal battle? This discussion dives into the delicate balance of creating and portraying character imperfections that are realistic while also leading the audience to a better understanding of a character’s motivations and actions, whether they be right, wrong, or somewhere on the large spectrum in between.Episode Guests: Liz Tigelaar (Life Unexpected), Christopher C.
