Ciao. Rocket Beans wird unterstützt von fritz-kola. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Welcome back to Born to Watch, where this week the team tackles the endlessly rewatchable, criminally underappreciated Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Strap in as Whitey, Damo, and Dan on the Land gear up for a sci-fi action loop fest featuring Tom Cruise in one of his most against-type roles, Emily Blunt as a full-metal badass, and a time-travel plot that actually sticks the landing. Enjoy our Edge of Tomorrow (2014) Review! The boys jump right into the paradox-riddled battlefield, first marveling at how this epic blockbuster somehow bombed in the US, despite being everything a great action movie should be. They blame lousy marketing, title confusion (was it Live Die Repeat?), and the fact that in 2014, Cruise was still on Hollywood's naughty step thanks to Oprah's couch. But now? It's cult-classic gold.Whitey kicks off by calling out just how rare it is to see Cruise playing the weasel, Major Cage is an ad man thrown into combat, clueless and terrified. For Dan, this fish-out-of-water arc makes the movie shine, watching Cruise go from smug coward to unstoppable warrior. Damo agrees, even calling Edge of Tomorrow his number one Cruise performance, yep, he goes there.Emily Blunt earns unanimous praise as Rita Vrataski, the “Angel of Verdun” and all-around exosuit-slaying legend. She's fierce, stoic, and fit as hell, basically the action heroine we didn't know we needed in 2014. Her iconic push-up entrance gets a lot of airtime (and a few longing sighs), and the team agrees she holds her own, and then some, against Cruise. And what would a Born to Watch ep be without the usual blend of insight and irreverence? We get tangents on everything from duck anatomy (cloacas, anyone?) to Bill Paxton's legendary status as the only man killed by a Terminator, a Predator, and an Alien. The Paxton love is real. The pod dives into director Doug Liman's sharp visuals and crisp pacing, and shout out screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, who somehow turns a convoluted time loop premise into a tight, clever, and emotional thrill ride. Liman's resume (Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) gets the props it deserves, and there's a great sidebar on the upcoming Road House remake, complete with hot takes on Jake Gyllenhaal. As always, the “Hit, Sleeper, Dud” segment delivers, with Gone Girl getting the nod as a masterful hit, Kevin Costner's 3 Days to Kill as a solid sleeper, and Lucy (sorry, ScarJo) landing squarely in dud territory. Bonus points for Damo's vivid breakdown of Ben Affleck's infamous side-dick scene. The episode also features a glorious Cruise countdown. Each host reveals their top five Tom Cruise films, expect Jerry Maguire, Collateral, Top Gun: Maverick, and of course, Edge of Tomorrow, to make appearances. Damo even throws in Tropic Thunder, because who can forget Les Grossman? Then there's the philosophical stuff: How long was Cage actually in the time loop? (Answer: a hell of a long time). Was blackmailing the general really the best plan? (Debatable). And what's the real ending? (Whitey thinks it's Cruise's “now you're gonna bone me” smile).Oh, and voicemails are back! Listeners call in to rant about The Bodyguard, praise the pod's Whitney Houston renditions, and drop the occasional F-bomb. Classic Born to Watch fan energy.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts!Join the conversation:Is Edge of Tomorrow Cruise's most underrated film? Would you waste 300 time loops trying to get with Emily Blunt? Did this movie deserve to flop—or is it a misunderstood masterpiece?Drop us a voicemail at BornToWatch.com.au and be part of the show!#BornToWatch #EdgeOfTomorrow #TomCruise #EmilyBlunt #MoviePodcast #SciFiMovies #DougLiman #TimeLoopMovies #LiveDieRepeat #FilmDiscussion #UnderratedGems #CinephileApproved

Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars and move directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Sometimes we are lucky enough to even speak with them about their work. And sometimes, they are both a movie star and a movie director. Today that's Julia Stiles, director of Wish You Were Here, now in theaters and available digitally on February 4th. Our B-Sides today include O, The Business of Strangers, and It's a Disaster. Stiles discusses the filmmakers she's worked with in the past and how they influenced her decisions sitting in the director's chair (the best ones “set a tone of calmness” she says), making friends on the South Carolina set of O, and becoming more intentional with the creative choices in her career (including auditioning for Silver Linings Playbook). We also chat about Wish You Were Here, her feature debut as a filmmaker. Stiles mentions guarding against the saccharine to tell “a mature love story.” There's also considerable praise of lead actress Isabelle Fuhrman and her incredible range, as well as a story about calling filmmaker Doug Liman for sailing advice. Speaking of Liman, Dan and Conor take a moment to unpack Nicky Parsons from the Bourne franchise, the efforts(?) of Tony Gilroy, and a crucial line read in Ultimatum that adds so much depth to Stiles' role. Finally, we cover how exactly Stiles got the great Vanessa Carlton and her partner John McCauley to do the score to her film. Early 2000s icons unite! And there is a brief, insightful conversation on why exactly Stiles chose to do all of those Shakespeare adaptations early on in her career. UNSTOPPABLE director Billy Goldenberg and editor Brett Reed have had a working relationship for over twenty years, going back to their time together on COYOTE UGLY (2000).  Since that film, they've logged a lot of hours as "editor and assistant" or "editor and additional editor", but their new film brings about a whole new dynamic, "director and editor". UNSTOPPABLE is the inspiring true story of Anthony Robles (Jharrel Jerome) who was born with one leg but whose indomitable spirit and unbreakable resolve empowered him to defy the odds and pursue his dreams. With the unwavering love and support of his devoted mother Judy (Jennifer Lopez) and the encouragement of his coaches, Anthony fights through adversity to earn a spot on the Arizona State Wrestling team. But it will demand everything he has, physically and mentally, to achieve his ultimate quest to become an NCAA Champion. WILLIAM GOLDENBERG, ACE While UNSTOPPABLE is Billy's first shot at directing, he is one of the most well-respected and sought-after film editors working today. He won an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, and the American Cinema Editors' (ACE) Eddie Award for his outstanding work on the 2013 Best Picture winner, Argo, directed by Ben Affleck. His recent editing credits include Air, 22 July, Unbroken, and Concussion. Goldenberg received dual Oscar nominations in 2013, also being nominated, along with editor Dylan Tichenor, for his work on Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty.  In 2015, Billy was again nominated for an Oscar, a BAFTA Award, and an Eddie Award for the historical thriller The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley.  He was previously Oscar-nominated for his editing work on Seabiscuit, and on Michael Mann's controversial film The Insider (with Paul Rubell and David Rosenbloom). Roles in family dramedy "Gabi on the Roof in July" (2010), romantic comedy "The Ride of Tom and Valkyrie" (2011), love triangle tale "Green" (2011) and LGBT movie "Gayby" (2012) then followed, as did a brief spot in "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" (2014). When the heist goes wrong, the two are caught up in a whirlwind of chaos. Movie of the Year: 1996Swingers (feat. Conor from iFanboy!)In this Movie of the Year episode, the hosts dive into Swingers, the iconic 1996 film that brought male friendship, 1990s L.A. nightlife, and swing dancing back into the cultural spotlight. Swingers not only redefined indie cinema but also launched the careers of Doug Liman and Jon Favreau, who would go on to become Hollywood heavyweights. This episode unpacks the film's timeless appeal by exploring its unique take on male camaraderie, its unforgettable swing dance scenes, and the remarkable backstory of Liman and Favreau's collaboration.Male Friendships in Swingers: Redefining Bromance on the Big ScreenOne of Swingers' enduring legacies is its portrayal of post-breakup male friendships. In this episode, the hosts examine how Jon Favreau's character, Mike, leans on his friends—most notably the brash yet lovable Trent, played by Vince Vaughn—to overcome heartache and rediscover his confidence. Rather than a cliché “bro” dynamic, Swingers presents male friendships with depth and sincerity, showing how friends help each other through life's awkward, often painful phases. The podcast explores why these friendships resonate, especially for audiences navigating similar relationships and social struggles.Doug Liman and Jon Favreau: The Vision Behind SwingersWith just a modest budget, Doug Liman and Jon Favreau created Swingers, a film that captured the spirit of a generation. The hosts discuss how Favreau's semi-autobiographical script was brought to life by Liman's guerrilla-style direction, using handheld shots and natural lighting that lend the movie an authentic, documentary feel. Favreau's clever, fast-paced dialogue—a staple of Swingers—cements the film's place in pop culture, while Liman's distinct approach sets the tone for future indie films. The episode highlights how Liman and Favreau went from indie darlings to Hollywood icons and why their collaboration still matters today.Swing Dancing: A Cultural Revival Captured in SwingersThe swing dancing scenes in Swingers are integral to the film's style and story, reflecting a broader swing dance revival in the 1990s. The Movie of the Year hosts trace this cultural phenomenon, explaining how the music and dance moves in Swingers helped revive a retro dance form for a new generation. The film's soundtrack, featuring bands like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, became synonymous with Swingers' identity, offering a blend of cool and nostalgia. The podcast discusses how these scenes captured the swing dance revival authentically, making Swingers a time capsule of '90s cool.Special Guest Conor Kilpatrick from iFanboy Joins the ConversationAdding to the discussion is special guest Conor Kilpatrick from iFanboy, bringing fresh insights and humor to this Swingers deep dive. A fan of both films and comics, Conor connects the Swingers characters with relatable “everyman” qualities that resonate across both movie and comic book fandoms. His perspective adds depth, especially when he compares the film's characters to beloved archetypes in comic lore, and his energetic contributions make for an engaging episode filled with sharp insights and good laughs. Why Swingers Is "So Money" and Still RelevantThe hosts close with a look at Swingers' lasting impact and why it continues to captivate audiences. For fans of indie films, '90s culture, or anyone who's ever leaned on friends to get through hard times, this Movie of the Year episode celebrates why the movie remains “so money.”...

Which of the film's three main stories is the best one? What is a rave like at Christmas time? Would the film's director, Doug Liman, been a choice to helm "Good Will Hunting"? Matt Damon ends his press tour for “The Instigators,” starring Damon and Casey Affleck, on this week's episode of Breaking Bread. Matt and Tom talk about everything from the day they met on the set for Steven Soderbergh's “The Informant” to Matt's forbidden love for the Yankees, breaking the hearts of Red Sox fans around the world (Boston). The pair talk Tom's dreams of being an Olympian/BMX champion, surfing together in Costa Rica, trying to make James Gandolfini laugh, and Robin Williams' beloved legacy. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- See Matt Damon in “The Instigators”: “The Instigators” debuted in select theaters August 2, 2024 before its global premier on Apple TV+ August 9, 2024! In the film, Rory (Matt Damon) and Cobby (Casey Affleck) are reluctant partners: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to pull off a robbery of the ill-gained earnings of a corrupt politician. But when the heist goes wrong, the two find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos, pursued not only by police, but also backwards bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses. Completely out of their depth, they convince Rory's therapist (Hong Chau) to join their riotous getaway through the city, where they must put aside their differences and work together to evade capture—or worse. Directed by Doug Liman and written by Chuck MacLean and Casey Affleck, “The Instigators” also stars Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, and Toby Jones, with Jack Harlow and Ron Perlman. 00:00 Intro 00:40 Midnight Run & ‘The Instigators' 04:19 Tom getting cut from ‘Air' 07:54 Matt can't remember what movies he's been in 10:35 Direct! 16:09 Matt Damon LOVES Derek Jeter 21:36 Tom Papa, average Olympian 24:40 Casey Affleck writing ‘The Instigators” 25:58 Car chase therapy & Bourne Identity 31:16 Instigators is pro-therapy 34:36 Jack Nicholson's advice 38:35 ‘Good Will Hunting' Robin Williams & Michael Stuhlbarg 43:31 Surfing in Costa Rica 45:36 You'll never run a marathon 47:02 Trying to make James Gandolfini laugh 48:15 Taste Test! Stop it. This is a Great GREAT Movie. Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt's essentially perfect dynamic is the heart of this incredible summer-kablooie movie. This isn't a bad movie podcast, it's a great movie podcast, but... That said... Sometimes those great movies have Jean-Claude Van Damme in them. In this case, Joe and Greg don't even pretend this movie has badness in it... They were too busy holding their breath and enjoying Doug Liman's classic film, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this summer. The film's genius lies in its ability to mix high-stakes action with genuine humor. Just when you think you're watching a serious war movie, Cruise's comedic timing kicks in, turning imminent death into a punchline. It's a blend of Groundhog Day and Starship Troopers, but, you know... Super good. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Remember when action movie heroes didn't have to think and just beat up a load of bad guys? Jason Bourne heralded the change when The Bourne Identity came out in 2002, and heroes became as vulnerable as they could be dangerous. It was a troubled production, led by Doug Liman, who fought for years to get the rights to the material, and get the movie made in his own chaotic and frenetic directorial style - a style that didn't sit well with the producers or the executives at Universal.Liman didn't just want another generic action spy movie, but an art film that the studio could sell as an action movie, and his lead actor Matt Damon agreed. Damon wanted to play this every man hero - the All-American boy next door who could also take on several trained operatives at once. The production was plagued with multiple delays, rewrites, reshoots and shots of Jägermeister.Warner Bros had let the rights they originally hold revert back to the original author Robert Ludlum in 1999, so how did they end up in a lawsuit over lost royalties from The Bourne Identity, a movie not even made by them?I would love to hear your thoughts on The Bourne Identity (2002) !Verbal Diorama is now an award-winning podcast!
