Mehdi Hasan is a prominent broadcast journalist in America who's forthright anti-Trump and pro-Palestinian opinions have thrust him to the fore of many of the big issues facing the country today. He is the founder and editor-in-chief of Zeteo, previously hosting The Mehdi Hasan Show on MSNBC, and his work straddles the line between conventional journalism and advocacy-driven argument. In this episode of Ways to Change the World he tells Krishnan Guru-Murthy why he believes American democracy is facing an “existential threat', what he expects to happen next in Gaza and whether Labour can withstand the rise of Nigel Farage's Reform UK. In the podcast, Mehdi makes accusations against several US companies. Comcast rejects any suggestions it may have engaged in misconduct by donating to the new $400 million ballroom under construction at the Trump White House. Responding to Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who asked the media and Internet company if there had been a quid pro quo, they said: “Comcast's pledged donation included no specific limitations or conditions on how the proceeds were to be used or spent. Furthermore, Comcast made the donation with no expectations of receiving anything in return and the implication that the donation has anything to do with a potential transaction involving Warner Brothers Discovery is categorically false.”When Paramount settled their lawsuit with President Trump they said the money was going to be allocated to Trump's future presidential library, not paid to him "directly or indirectly".The company also noted the settlement does not include a statement of apology or regret.Responding to reports in the Financial Times that a donor to Donald Trump's reelection campaign had received the first barrels of oil obtained from Venezuela after America seized president Maduro, a White House spokesman said: “President Trump always does what is in the best interest of the American people, such as brokering this historic energy deal with Venezuela immediately following the arrest of narcoterrorist Nicolás Maduro. The media's continued attempts to fabricate conflicts of interest are a tired attempt to distract from the incredible work only this president is capable of achieving.” The White House has also rejected accusations of corruption. Israel denies accusations of genocide and ethnic cleansing.

Le mouvement de protestation qui se déroule en Iran témoigne de la forte dégradation de la situation économique causée par les sanctions américaines, mais aussi par la corruption et la mauvaise gestion du pays. Alors que l'inflation y dépasse les 50%, la hausse des prix des produits de consommation courante atteint même 80%, touchant de plein fouet les Iraniens dans leur quotidien. De notre correspondant à Téhéran, Les marchés municipaux sont chaque jour bondés à Téhéran. Il en existe dans tous les quartiers de la capitale de l'Iran. Créés par la mairie, ils proposent des produits alimentaires et des fruits et légumes moins chers que dans les magasins privés. Mehdi et Farideh, un couple de cinquantenaires, ont l'habitude de venir faire leurs courses ici même s'ils ne font pas partie des catégories les moins aisées. « Voilà plusieurs années que nous faisons nos courses dans ce marché. Nous y venions même lorsque les prix n'étaient pas aussi élevés. Ici, les prix sont moins chers qu'ailleurs car les produits sont de moins bonne qualité. On doit regarder notre porte-monnaie quand nous faisons nos courses. Si on voulait acheter ces mêmes fruits et légumes ailleurs, nous devrions payer 50% plus cher. Lorsqu'il est venu nous rendre visite récemment, mon fils qui vit à l'étranger n'arrivait pas à croire que les prix avaient autant augmenté. Par exemple, le prix du poulet est sans commune mesure avec son niveau d'il y a deux ou trois ans », expliquent-ils. De nombreux Iraniens des classes les plus pauvres n'ont pas les moyens d'acheter de la viande ou du poulet et beaucoup doivent faire des choix lorsqu'ils font leurs courses. « Les gens achètent ce dont ils ont vraiment besoin » C'est également le cas de Mehdi et Farideh : « Pour certains produits, on en achète moins. Pour d'autres, on les a supprimés. On achète d'abord ce dont nous avons réellement besoin. Pour pouvoir continuer de vivre et manger comme avant, nous avons dû vendre des biens, un terrain par exemple ». Abbas, le gérant de l'épicerie d'à côté, se plaint aussi de la situation économique et de la baisse du pouvoir d'achat de ses clients qui ont fait baisser ses ventes : « Nos ventes ont baissé de 30% à 50%, en particulier les produits laitiers comme le fromage qui a fortement baissé. Les gens achètent ce dont ils ont vraiment besoin. Même constat pour le riz devenu très cher lui aussi : les gens n'en achètent plus. Ou si, auparavant, un client en prenait un sac de plusieurs kilos, désormais il en achète une quantité bien moindre : 500 grammes ou un kilo. » Le riz fait partie des principaux aliments des Iraniens mais son prix a augmenté de près de 300% depuis un an. Pas forcément académique mais qui l'a amené à faire plusieurs marathons, des ultra ou encore plusieurs 24h.Medhi nous parle de son attachement à la communauté de coureurs, des belles rencontres, de l'importance de la petite équipe qui s'est montée dans un quartier de Rennes et avec laquelle il se lance dans des courses et défis, comme un 24h ce week-end.Il évoque des moments précieux passés avec eux mais aussi cette course de 5km avec ses enfants qu'il considère comme son plus beau souvenir.Le parcours de Mehdi montre que chacun a une histoire unique qui mérite d'être partagée. La marche blanche en hommage à Mehdi Kessaci a rassemblé près de 6 200 personnes, samedi 22 novembre, à Marseille. Le chiffre peut paraître modeste pour une ville de 877 000 habitants. Pourtant, il est inédit. En effet, jamais la cité phocéenne ne s'était autant mobilisée pour dénoncer le narcotrafic. Cette affluence témoigne de l'onde de choc qu'a provoquée le meurtre du jeune homme de 20 ans, survenu neuf jours plus tôt. Frère cadet d'Amine Kessaci, une figure bien connue à Marseille pour son combat contre le trafic de drogue, Mehdi a reçu six balles dans le thorax, en plein jour.L'émotion a dépassé les frontières de Marseille. Le ministre de l'intérieur, Laurent Nuñez, a évoqué un « point de bascule » et appelé à « amplifier la lutte » contre le narcobanditisme. When survivors begin to see the same horrors they faced be inflicted onto others decades later?In this conversation, Mehdi sits down with Stephen Kapos – an 88-year-old British-Hungarian Holocaust survivor, who was forced to go into hiding at the age of seven, was separated from his mother and father, lost 15 members of his family to the Nazi concentration camps, and witnessed the total destruction of cities during the war. Today, Kapos has become one of the most vocal pro-Palestinian voices among Jewish Holocaust survivors.“What I saw then was a by-product of two armies fighting, and what I see in Gaza is deliberate destruction. It's even worse,” Kapos says, comparing the scenes of rubble and dead bodies in 1944 and now. He also reflects on his trip to Israel in the 1960s and what he was shocked to find even back then.Mehdi also asks Kapos about those who have cited similarities between Donald Trump's fascistic leadership in the US and Nazi Germany in the 1920s and 30s. C'était hier une journée d'hommage à Mehdi Kessaci, à Marseille. Mehdi, 20 ans, assassiné le 13 novembre dernier, était le frère d'Amine Kessaci, jeune militant écologiste engagé contre le narcotrafic dans les quartiers Nord de la ville. Un assassinat interprété comme un « crime d'avertissement ». Hier, plus de 6 000 personnes se sont rassemblées à Marseille, dont de nombreuses personnalités politiques. Le Parisien-Dimanche a choisi une photo où l'on voit la mère des deux jeunes hommes, portant un foulard blanc, éplorée, soutenue par son fils Amine. Elle s'est adressée aux assassins de Mehdi, abattu par deux hommes à moto : « Assassins », leur a-t-elle dit, « vous m'avez déjà tuée, mais vous ne tuerez jamais mon amour, celui que j'ai pour mes enfants ». Dans la foule, une maman témoigne : « On craint pour notre vie, pour notre famille. Il faut briser le silence, sortir de l'omerta et couper la tête de ces mafias ».  La vie dans les quartiers La Tribune Dimanche a, elle aussi, rencontré des Marseillais venus participer à ce rassemblement. C'est le cas de Béatrice, une enseignante d'une quarantaine d'années qui raconte : « Dans les quartiers, il n'y a plus aucun service public, à part l'école. Même les médecins ont fui. Il ne reste plus que la drogue et la mort. C'est comme si on ne voulait pas que les pauvres s'en sortent ». Dans son éditorial, Bruno Jeudy appelle, lui, à faire front contre le narcotrafic : « Plus personne ne doit baisser les yeux » dit-il, « ni les élus, ni les forces de l'ordre, ni les magistrats, ni surtout les citoyens. Luttons contre cette pieuvre qui étouffe la République, brise des vies et fabrique la mort ». Netanyahu sur la corde raide L'Express se penche sur l'avenir de Benyamin Netanyahu.  A l'approche de nouvelles élections, l'année prochaine, l'hebdomadaire soupèse les chances du Premier ministre israélien, 76 ans. « Cerné de toutes parts, donné perdant, il devra mener une campagne des législatives à haut risque. » D'autant que, ajoute l'hebdomadaire, « depuis le 7 octobre, Netanyahou a perdu deux de ses principaux atouts : il s'était toujours vendu comme "Monsieur Sécurité", capable de protéger Israël, et il se disait le seul capable de défendre les intérêts israéliens, en particulier vis-à-vis des Etats-Unis. Or, il ne peut plus rien refuser à Trump ». Pour autant, Netanyahu ne part pas perdant, précise l'Express : « Même si les sondages ne le placent pas très haut, toute personne suivant la politique israélienne sait qu'il reste une force majeure et qu'il fera tout ce qui est en son pouvoir pour survivre politiquement. »  Retour en France L'écrivain franco-algérien Boualem Sansal est en France et à la Une du Point. Boualem Sansal, libéré le 12 novembre après avoir passé un an en prison en Algérie. Il a finalement été gracié par le président algérien, à la suite d'une médiation du président allemand. Avant de revenir en France, cette semaine, Boualem Sansal a passé plusieurs jours en Allemagne. En Une, le Point nous promet « ses premières paroles d'homme libre », paroles recueillies par son ami Kamel Daoud, écrivain franco-algérien lui aussi, qui a pu joindre Boualem Sansal, alors qu'il était encore en Allemagne. « Veux-tu que j'écrive une phrase précise ? », lui demande Kamel Daoud. « Bonjour la France, Boualem revient, on va gagner ! » répond Boualem Sansal. L'écrivain raconte également qu'en prison, il n'a pas pu écrire. « J'étais comme coupé du monde » dit-il. Discrétion On n'en saura guère plus. Car depuis qu'il est rentré en Europe, en Allemagne, puis en France, Boualem Sansal n'a fait aucune apparition publique, n'a répondu à aucune question de journaliste. Une discrétion toute diplomatique, qui a sans doute été négociée en même temps que la libération de l'écrivain, et alors que les relations semblent se réchauffer entre la Paris et Alger. Ce qui donne un peu d'espoir pour un autre détenu en Algérie. Le Point rappelle  que le journaliste français Christophe Gleizes, accusé notamment « d'apologie du terrorisme », « condamné en juin dernier à 7 ans de prison, sera  jugé en appel, le 3 décembre prochain ».  Boues industrielles L'eau potable manque dans certaines régions du nord-est de la France. C'est le Nouvel Obs, qui s'est penché sur la question et nous explique « que les habitants de plusieurs communes ont interdiction depuis l'été de consommer l'eau du robinet, en raison de taux de polluants éternels supérieurs à la norme », les fameux PFAS, qui font si peur... En cause, notamment, des boues industrielles, « épandues sur des parcelles agricoles ». Pour les habitants, contraints d'utiliser l'eau en bouteille, l'heure est à l'inquiétude. « Depuis combien de temps boivent-ils une eau contaminée ? Des mois, des années, voire des décennies ? » interroge le Nouvel Obs. Chacun craint pour sa santé. Une habitante, qui a même renoncé à l'eau du robinet pour faire ses lessives, le dit franchement :« Cette eau, je la vois maintenant comme du poison ».

Craig Unger confirms the Madrid meeting in July 1980, where Bill Casey met with Iranian cleric Mehdi Karoubi, establishing the parameters of the October Surprise by asking Karoubi to delay the hostage release until after the presidential election. The alleged Paris meeting in October involving George H.W. Bush is harder to prove, though investigative work punctured Bush's alibis. Iran was motivated by desperation for American military spare parts, especially after Iraq invaded in September 1980. (Because why would she care about more than 20,000 innocent children, right?)This is why we, Zeteo, exist.
