On Tuesday, in a groundbreaking new report, the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory officially concluded that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. This comes ahead of the members of the commission stepping down later this year, after announcing their resignations this summer amid the US's escalating attacks on UN personnel.“The Commission concludes that the State of Israel bears responsibility for the failure to prevent genocide, the commission of genocide, and the failure to punish genocide against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip,” the report says.In this exclusive interview, Mehdi speaks with two of the commissioners behind this report: Chair Navi Pillay of South Africa and commissioner Chris Sidoti, one of Australia's most prominent human rights lawyers. In the interview, Pillay – who previously served as president of the UN's International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda – immediately draws parallels between genocide in Gaza and the Rwandan genocide.“It's when I came to the deliberate shooting of the single standing building where the fertility clinic was and the embryos. That immediately reminded me of the Rwanda genocide where I was a judge and where they ripped the bellies of pregnant women, pulled out the fetuses because they wanted to kill off the entire Tutsi group,” Pillay recounts.Pillay and Sidoti also both point out that unlike the Rwandan genocide, Palestinians in Gaza do not have neighboring countries they can escape to.“There is nowhere that the people of Gaza can go to escape this slaughter,” Sidoti tells Mehdi. “And yet the slaughter has continued.”The commissioners also address criticism that their report does not cover Hamas's war crimes, with Pillay noting that the commission has addressed Hamas's war crimes in previous reports.“It doesn't mean to me that every time you have to strike some kind of balance as if the parties are equal,” she explains. “They are not equal. One is the occupier and the other is occupied.”You can watch the full interview above to hear Mehdi press the commissioners on why it has taken almost two years for them to declare that Israel is committing a genocide, and why Israel prevented their commission from investigating claims of rape and sexual violence from both sides. He also asks whether they fear retaliation from the US for their report, after the Trump administration's sanctioning of ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan and UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese. If you're not a paid subscriber, please do consider upgrading your subscription today and supporting independent journalism. Ben and Nate review a letter from the ABA council chair outlining the standards behind ongoing accreditation revisions. Line by line, the guys conclude the same thing: the ABA underperforms in its efforts to protect law students, from the lack of transparency surrounding the actual price of law school to the ever-increasing cost of a legal degree. Protect yourself by crushing the LSAT, applying early and broadly, and attending the right school at the right price. Study with our Free PlanDownload our iOS appWatch Episode 524 on YouTube0:31 – Tips from Departing DemonsBen and Nate share the top tips from departing Demon students who crushed the August exam. Andrew: Just read the damn words.Mario: Don't take an official test until your scores show you're ready. Stevan: Get greedy. Megan: The advice to “slow down” applies to you. Sam: It takes hard work. 7:59 – ABA Standards and ValuesThe ABA council chair's recent letter highlights their guiding standards for revised accreditation. They claim to act in the name of consumer protection and professional integrity, but many of their standards read like lip service. Ben and Nathan point out how the ABA underperforms by its own values—especially around transparency. Simply put, the law school pricing system is stacked against students. This makes it vital to focus on the actual price paid rather than the sticker price. The best way to protect yourself: crush the LSAT and attend the right school at the right price.36:26 – Is Going to an ABA School Necessary?Gabriel is weighing a top-tier ABA school against a state-accredited option. While elite schools are useful for breaking into big law, the bigger question is whether you understand the path to practice. Price should still be your top concern. $75,000 isn't cheap, but with the right LSAT performance, you can likely find a school for free.44:35 – Practice TestsMehdi asks whether practice tests are still relevant after the latest changes to the LSAT. Ben and Nate suggest avoiding Reddit. The LSAT has always been a test of reading and comprehension. The removal of logic games doesn't change that. Mehdi mentions planning for the November test. Ben and Nathan push back, insisting that choosing a test date in advance is premature.53:32 – A JD Isn't a Gravy TrainJohn shares a story about meeting a law grad now working at a building supply store. It's a reminder that a JD alone doesn't guarantee financial stability or prestige. Listeners should carefully weigh the cost of law school against realistic career outcomes.56:00 – What's the Deal with Mitchell Hamline School of Law?Ben and Nate dive into John's story by looking at the supply clerk's alma mater: Mitchell Hamline School of Law, “Minnesota's Law School of Choice.” Check out all of our What's the Deal with segments. 1:17:09 – Word of the Week: Lacunae“A common law prosecution is not possible, therefore, unless there is a true gap in the statutory system, and today there are few lacunae.”Get caught up with our Word of the Week library.
This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit zeteo.comOn this week's ‘We're Not Kidding' Mehdi sits down with an actual superhero. No, not the Incredible Hulk from Marvel's ‘The Avengers' — he's a pretend super hero. The real-life superhero we're referring to this week is the award-winning Hollywood actor and activist Mark Ruffalo. For over two decades, Mark has been one of the most politically courageous actors in Hollywood, having spoken out against the fracking industry, US imperialism, Donald Trump, and the genocide in Gaza. The two talk about Mark's political evolution, from being raised in a household with three different religions to getting involved in the anti-war movement during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. When discussing Trump's second term and rising fascism here in the US, Mark doesn't mince words when it comes to the tepid opposition from Democratic party leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries. Mark says, before also launching into a scathing critique of the notoriously pro-Israel House Democrat Ritchie Torres. Finally, Mehdi asks Mark about his years-long advocacy for Palestine and the elaborate “propaganda machine” deployed by Israel and its allies, as Mark is no stranger to being attacked for his pro-Palestine views. Now almost two years into Israel's genocide in Gaza, Mark gets deeply emotional when discussing the human cost of the conflict.SUBSCRIBE TO ZETEO TO SUPPORT INDEPENDENT AND UNFILTERED JOURNALISM: https://zeteo.com/subscribeWATCH, LISTEN AND SUBSCRIBE TO ‘WE'RE NOT KIDDING' ON SUBSTACK: https://zeteo.com/s/were-not-kidding-with-mehdi-and-friendsFIND ZETEO:Twitter: https://twitter.com/zeteo_newsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/zeteonewsTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@zeteonewsFIND MEHDI:Substack: https://substack.com/@mehdirhasanTwitter: https://twitter.com/@mehdirhasanInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/@mehdirhasanTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mehdirhasanCREDITS:Hosted by: Mehdi HasanGuest Host: Mark RuffaloExecutive Producer: Kiran AlviSenior Producer and Editor: Frank CappelloMusic: Andy ClausenDesign: Alicia TatoneMix Engineer: Valentino RiveraTitle Animation: Ehsaan MesghaliSpecial Thanks: Khaleel Rahman

When I saw the viral clips from Piers Morgan's show - featuring State of Tel Aviv and Beyond friend and regular guest, FDD Senior Fellow, Jonathan Conricus debating Mehdi Hasan - I could not resist. Jonathan and I spoke Sunday morning about what went down during that raucous exchange, which is more than television theatrics. Conricus has emerged as one of the most powerful and articulate spokespeople globally addressing issues arising regarding the Israel-Hamas war as well as regional issues. He has deep experience in the military and a gift for explaining complex issues in a way that makes them accessible. And, unlike Mehdi, he never loses his cool. We spend most of our time today speaking about the IDF operation in Gaza City and Conricus explains why he believes that it is the correct course of action for Israel at this time, in spite of the fact that the operation imperils the lives of the remaining hostages held by Hamas. It's hard to keep up, I know. But it struck me that we are at a critical nodal point regarding Hamas, Gaza and the hostages and merited a quick rundown. Given what's going on - this discussion is a quickie. The issue of media handling of issues relating to Israel is a longstanding interest of mine, as you are likely aware. And the tenor of Piers Morgan's show is also important, in my view. Like him or hate him he has millions of viewers globally and has maintained a strong focus on the Israel-Hamas war. Which means we have no choice but to pay attention to what goes down on his show. You can watch the full episode of the Conricus-Hasan debate at the link provided in the notes. Also there is a link to a previous podcast episode with Conricus in which we speak about the pros and cons of participating on Piers Morgan Uncensored.Show your support for STLV at buymeacoffee.com/stateoftelavivPodcast Notes* Podcast episode of STLV discussing how Piers Morgan treats the Israel-Hamas war and related issue* Episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored featuring Mehdi Hasan and Jonathan Conricus, below. He served in the IDF for 24 years, four of them as spokesman during the intense 11 days of the Guardian of the Walls Operation between Israel and Hamas. Now a reserve officer with the rank of Lt. Col., he is a sought-after speaker internationally and is frequently seen on major television news shows.

In this segment of Mehdi Unfiltered, Mehdi speaks to Ward Sakeik, a stateless Palestinian whom the Trump administration tried to illegally deport not once, but twice.“‘I can send you to China, I can send you to Somalia, I could send you to Congo, I can send you wherever I want to send you,'” Sakeik recalled one ICE official telling her during 140 days in detention, even though she is protected by a Deferred Enforced Departure order that makes removing her from the United States illegal.Sakeik's attorney, Maria Kari, says “Americans need to wake up to the lie that ICE is taking ‘criminals' off the street because they're not. As of June, 70% of the people that ICE has arrested had no criminal history, just like Ward,” and adds that ICE took extra steps to make sure the attempts at deporting Sakeik would go unimpeded. In one attempt, ICE tried to deport Sakeik in the middle of the night to the border of Israel, of all places. They got as far as bringing her to the tarmac before calling it off as a result of Israel's bombing of Iran. “Why do you put somebody on a Boeing in the middle of the night? That's because their family's likely not awake, their lawyers likely not around, and the courts are not there to give you emergency relief. So all that is happening by design,” says Kari.Paid subscribers can watch the full interview above to hear Sakeik detail the conditions she was detained under, how some ICE officials told her she shouldn't have been detained in the first place, and whether she could be detained yet again.Free subscribers can watch a 4-minute preview. After getting his big break during an Instagram livestream with superstar Justin Bieber, Anees made the leap from up-and-comer to professional musician. Growing up in a half-Palestinian, half-Lebanese household with a father who worked in civil rights, Anees explains to Mehdi how making political music isn't even a conscious choice for him. Though when it comes to other famous musical artists, including a well-known Palestinian (cough cough, DJ Khaled), Anees has his own thoughts as to why some celebrities choose to stay out of the political fray. Who can't help but wonder how Trump got away with staging himself as the “peace” candidate, convincing so many Muslim and Arab Americans to vote for him, as he promised to end the war in Gaza?Well, then this interview is for you!In this ‘Mehdi Unfiltered' segment, Bishara Bahbah, the founder of Arab Americans for Trump (now renamed Arab Americans for Peace) and Trump's unofficial mediator with Hamas, tells Mehdi that he still believes, “that the president wants to end this war.”Mehdi presses the Palestinian-American businessman and activist on Trump's unfettered support for Israel's genocide and mad starvation, asking him that if he called Biden ‘Genocide Joe', “would you also call Donald Trump ‘Genocide Donald'?”"No, I wouldn't," Bahbah tells Mehdi, who then pushes back against Bahbah in what becomes a tense exchange on partisanship and double standards. Mehdi Hasan, a journalist renowned for confronting power directly and dismantling opponents in political debates, joined Posting Through It to reflect on his viral appearance on "Surrounded" — a YouTube debate show that recruited him to argue against 20 "far-right conservatives."Over nearly two hours, his opponents took turns sitting across from him and espousing racist bigotries, antisemitic conspiracy theories, and anti-democratic beliefs. When the cameras stopped rolling, Mehdi said one participant stood up and declared: "Left or Right, we all hate the Jews.""No one said a word," Mehdi recalled. The episode's explosive popularity (10.2 million views on YouTube alone) has reignited debates about "platforming" extremism and whether engaging with the far-right this way serves any constructive purpose. On this episode, we explore those criticisms with Mehdi, discuss his “hygiene tests” for debates, and explore why so many people who try to face off against the far-right end up failing.Links for Mehdi:* Check out Zeteo.com* Read “Win Every Argument: The Art of Debating, Persuading, and Public Speaking”* Watch “7 Debate Lessons YOU Can Learn From My Jubilee Video”* Follow @mehdirhasan on X and @mehdirhasan.bsky.social on BlueskyTransition Music: “WILL U STILL U” by Jeff RosenstockThrow a few bucks in our digital tip jar: https://tiptopjar.com/postingthroughitpod This is a public episode. On episode 91, our hosts Angela Rye and Andrew Gillum bring on super-guest and renowned progressive journalist: Mehdi Hasan. Tiffany Cross is away this week but she sent us a report from the ground in the DRC. Mehdi Hasan was featured on a Jubilee debate where he (a proclaimed progressive) debated 20 “far-right” young people. The debate was shocking, participants called themselves fascists, and told Mehdi, a naturalized citizen, to “get out” of the country. Mehdi reflects on the debate, the surprise and trauma of it, and what it says (and doesn’t say) about modern conservatives. In addition, the hosts chat with him about redistricting (see below). Follow Mehdi Hassan’s work at https://zeteo.com/ Gerrymandering, the unfair drawing of electoral maps to benefit one’s own party, has been an issue for decades. Egged on by the Trump administration, we are now on the verge of an all-out gerrymandering war. Redistricting (redrawing maps) normally happens at the end of each decade. Trump demanded that Texas redraw their map now to add more Republican seats and the Texas GOP obliged. In response, Democratic state reps have fled Texas to prevent the new maps from being voted on, and governors of blue states like California and New York have threatened to change their state laws to allow more partisan gerrymandering in favor of Democrats. Tiffany Cross is meeting with the president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit zeteo.comIn the last 20 years, Middle Eastern representation in American culture has gone from absolutely horrendous to… somewhat decent. Instead of TV shows like ‘24' and ‘Homeland', we now have ‘Ramy' and ‘Mo'. But before ANY of that, there was Iranian-American comedian Maz Jobrani, this week's co-host of ‘We're Not Kidding', who has been paving the way for Middle Eastern comics since the late 90s. In this heartfelt conversation, Maz tells Mehdi about his lifelong struggle of representing his home country while trying to assimilate to American culture. Maz also discusses the challenges of beginning his comedy career during the post-9/11 era, and being a part of the groundbreaking ‘Axis of Evil' comedy tour during a time of rampant Islamophobia in the US. Maz and Mehdi also unpack Donald Trump's “inhumane” immigration policy of mass detentions and deportations. As an outspoken advocate for immigrant rights, Maz slams the Trump admin for its abject cruelty and stupidity. One of the biggest scandals in recent US history is effectively no longer going to be investigated.Infamous child sex offender and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein had no client list. His death was just a suicide. Case closed. That seems to be the position President Donald Trump's DOJ is now taking after months of people across his administration suggesting they would release this notorious list that they claim Democrats were keeping secret. (Did you see our video compiling all the statements and their 180 turn?)Now, the MAGA world is in turmoil. They're blaming Trump's Attorney General Pam Bondi, accusing her of incompetence and even a "cover-up". We're not here to defend Bondi, but why aren't they upset with Trump for... you know... being friends with Epstein, his “closest”… for decades?Mehdi takes a deep-dive into their decades-long friendship, and brings all the receipts, from private jets to lavish parties to young women and much more. This video is free for all subscribers. Twelve days of war between Israel and Iran sparked passionate debates about the future of the Islamic Republic. How did Israel's strikes impact the stability of the regime? What are the implications of the war on Iranian dissidents, opposition figures, and everyday Iranian citizens? And what does the historically fractious Iranian diaspora hope for in the weeks and months ahead? To answer these questions and more, on July 3, SAPIR Institute Director Chanan Weissman moderated a conversation between SAPIR contributors and prominent Iranian-American activists – Roya Hakakian, an acclaimed writer and author, Mehdi Yahyanejad, a tech entrepreneur who founded methods to bypass censorship in Iran.

Mehdi and Alana also discuss Israel's now 20 month-long genocide in Gaza and the worsening humanitarian conditions on the ground, including the Israeli military's regular killings of Palestinians seeking food at Gaza Humanitarian Foundation aid sites. The two also speak about the recent ICE raids in Los Angeles and the massive protests that erupted in response, Ted Cruz making the US-Israel relationship “Instagram official” during his Tucker Carlson interview, and the success of the documentary film ‘The Encampments' produced by Watermelon Pictures and Macklemore, featuring now freed political prisoner Mahmoud Khalil. Also be sure to check out the Q&A that begins 32 minutes into the episode. But few wear as many caps as this week's guest co-host, Yasmin Elhady — a Libyan-Egyptian-American standup comedian, lawyer, and co-host of the popular Hulu TV series ‘Muslim Matchmaker'. But before she was a famous TV host, Yasmin tells Mehdi about her experience as a Muslim immigrant growing up in Alabama and the bullying she encountered.Mehdi and Yasmin also discuss the ways in which Muslim representation in American culture has gotten better over the last several decades, but how there's still room for improvement. As the co-host of the TV series ‘Muslim Matchmaker', Yasmin tells Mehdi how important getting the opportunity to show a different side of Muslim life meant to her. Yasmin also explains to Mehdi why she chose the dual path of lawyer and comedian, how her matchmaking career began with finding a wife for her brother, why she thinks Colonel Gaddafi was the “gayest dictator who's not gay” and whether Mehdi bears a resemblance to the 1980s-era McDonald's mascot, The Hamburglar.
