That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick shines a light on Shia LaBeouf's two turns as Saturday Night Live host—both surprisingly strong, both likely his last. Packed with standout sketches and offbeat moments, the episodes featured Shia as a bizarrely delightful version of magician Doug Henning on a twisted Match Game, and as one half of a duo of underage knuckleheads scheming to score beer with Andy Samberg. There's also a nod to Indiana Jones and a solid lineup of SNL regulars including Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig, Kenan Thompson, Maya Rudolph, and Fred Armisen. Nick shares behind-the-scenes stories from the tapings and wraps things up with Shia's wild retelling of his late-night Walgreens arrest on The Late Show with David Letterman. A look back at a talented, unpredictable host who nailed it—and probably won't be back. [EP 124]
That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Nick takes a hilarious stroll down memory lane to the night Peyton Manning traded his helmet for a hosting gig on Saturday Night Live. From Maya Rudolph and Amy Poehler dishing it out as the "Bronx Beat" ladies, to Andy Samberg's wild take on Sanjaya and a surprise visit from Dan Aykroyd, the show was packed with standout moments. Things get especially weird (and wonderful) when Manning joins Kristin Wiig for a late-night sketch that goes completely off the rails. But the real showstoppers? That infamous United Way spoof where Manning's tough love with a bunch of kids turns into comic gold, and Will Forte's unforgettable dance-floor meltdown in the Locker Room sketch—one he still calls a personal favorite. With clips, commentary, and memories from both Manning and Forte, this one's a winning highlight reel from a surprisingly game host. [EP 123]

The central theme of JJ, Alec and Mattson's discourse revolves around the cinematic work "Bridesmaids," a film that has elicited a spectrum of opinions from us regarding its merits and shortcomings. Throughout this episode, we engage in a meticulous examination of the film, which, while possessing certain comedic elements, is ultimately perceived as excessively prolonged and replete with moments that fail to achieve the desired comedic impact. The dialogue traverses the performances of the cast, notably Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, as we delve into the nuances of their portrayals and the overall chemistry that either enhances or detracts from the narrative. Furthermore, we express our collective sentiments regarding the film's structure, asserting that its attempts at humor frequently exceed acceptable bounds, leading to a dilution of its potential wit. As we conclude our analysis, we offer our ratings, reflecting a consensus that, despite some redeeming qualities, "Bridesmaids" ultimately falls short of the standards expected from a contemporary comedy.Support us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us: hosts@whatsourverdict.comFollow us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

Nick looks back at Season 45 of Saturday Night Live, a season that started off strong with Woody Harrelson hosting and Billie Eilish as the musical guest. Everything felt business as usual—until it wasn't. No one could have predicted that the season would end early, transformed into a series of prerecorded, at-home episodes due to the onset of a global pandemic. Nick analyzes the season episode by episode, revisiting standout sketches and memorable moments. Along the way, he reflects on how COVID-19 not only changed the world but also forced SNL to rethink how comedy could be created and delivered under lockdown conditions. Highlights include appearances by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Will Ferrell, Daniel Craig, Brad Pitt, Kristen Wiig, and Eddie Murphy, whose long-awaited and Emmy-winning return as host was a major high point—just before the world came to a halt. It's hard to believe that it was 50 years ago this year that Saturday Night Live made its debut on television. A four-part docuseries is coming out this week on Peacock, SNL 50: Beyond Saturday Night, which will give fans a look inside the show's making. Who knew that The Interview was so timely? I am doing the same in this week's episode. It was such a delight to sit down with 7-time Emmy Winner, Lindsay Shookus. For over twenty years, Lindsay worked in and became head of the talent department at SNL. Not only did she have one of the most exciting and, as she would say, ‘pinch me' careers that exist in entertainment (managing, booking, and discovering the talent for one of the greatest and longest-running comedy shows ever on television), but she learned so many important life lessons along the way. After leaving SNL in 2023, Lindsay has gone on to speak to thousands of people about the wisdom she gained during her time on the show and the importance of cultivating relationships with people during your career. Lindsay is also the Co-Founder of ‘Women Work F***ing Hard' – a group connecting and boosting women. In this conversation, Lindsay gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the production of SNL. She shares so many stories and experiences from her time there: from getting Snickers bars and vodka for the amazing Betty White to discovering Kristen Wiig on a tape, to getting a boost to her career from Alec Baldwin. Lindsay and I also talked about what it's like to work in that high-energy, 24/7 environment and incorporate that type of all-encompassing work with being a mother. We explore the important lessons learned from her time on SNL and how she approaches her life and work today. I loved taping this episode with Lindsay – she is down to earth, hilarious, and incredibly wise. I know you'll love listening to her amazing stories about life behind the scenes at SNL and the lessons she learned along the way. If you enjoy the show, please rate and review. Road trips — and road trip movies — are as American as apple pie. And now, currently streaming on Netflix, we have director Josh Greenbaum's poignant and very funny documentary “Will & Harper,” which tags along on a cross country road trip with close friends Will Ferrell and Harper Steele as the two navigate Harper's recent transition as a woman. Since meeting during their first week on staff together at “Saturday Night Love,” they've been tight ever since. But when Harper sends Will an email coming out as a trans woman, she can't be sure how her famous comedian friend will react. In short order, Will proposes a road trip so that they can ask all those questions that arise after such a big change. Director Josh Greenbaum joins Ken on the pod to discuss all the joys and bumps on the road that transpired over the course of Will and Harper's epic 16-day journey to such noted tourist destinations as the Grand Canyon… and a dive bar in Meeker, Oklahoma. Along the way, the two tackle such questions as, “What are the new ground rules for the friendship, if any?” “Can Harper still feel safe and comfortable in the same kind of places she used to visit as a man?” And “How are your boobs??” The laughs and the tears come in equal measure. Buckle up and enjoy the ride. “Will & Harper” has recently been named to the Oscar Shortlist for Best Documentary Feature, and “Harper and Will Go West,” the theme song for the trip written by Kristin Wiig, has been named to the Oscar Shortlist for Best Original Song. The Spin Chagrin, a concept that finds Frank having to watch a movie he's never seen before based on the random spin of a wheel filled with off-the-wall genres, continues into its third year; the twist this year is that all the categories are quotables from Frank himself. In this episode, Frank's category was "Bad Mouth Feel.” For this category, he watched and reviewed only one movie: the 2016 animated movie Sausage Party with voice work by Seth Rogen, Michael Cera, Kristen Wiig, Paul Rudd, Danny McBride, Bill Hader, Craig Robinson, and others.

Impressions have been a cornerstone of Saturday Night Live since its inception, showcasing the cast's incredible comedic and mimicry skills. In this episode of That Show…, Nick highlights some of his favorite SNL impressions from over the years. Included are Kristen Wiig's hilariously over-the-top impersonation of Jamie Lee Curtis promoting Activia Yogurt, Emma Stone's spot-on portrayal of Lindsay Lohan, and Vanessa Bayer's uncanny Jennifer Aniston impression—delivered while the real Jennifer Aniston sits right next to her. You'll also hear Melissa Villaseñor sneaking her Dolly Parton and Lady Gaga impressions into Weekend Update, and Taran Killam's biting takedown of Bravo's Andy Cohen. Nick also shares behind-the-scenes stories about these bits and impressions and features a classic sketch where at least a dozen incredible impressions are showcased during “auditions” for Jurassic Park. This episode is all about making a great impression—and you'll laugh the whole way through. [Ep100]

In the latest That Show..., Nick revisits a standout episode of Saturday Night Live that aired on November 21, 2009, when actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt hosted for the first time. This episode is legendary for containing what many consider one of the best opening monologues in SNL history. Gordon-Levitt wowed audiences by recreating Donald O'Connor's iconic "Make 'Em Laugh" number from the classic musical Singin' in the Rain, delivering the routine with incredible skill and energy. It's breathtaking to watch and remains one of the all-time greatest monologues. Alongside this unforgettable performance, Nick highlights some of the best sketches from that night, including a riotous edition of What's Up With That?, the debut of Secret Word featuring Kristen Wiig's hilarious Mindy Grayson, and a talk show parody with Andy Samberg, Bill Hader, Gordon-Levitt, and a spot-on David Matthews as Ozzy Osbourne. All of this fantastic comedy leads up to that unbelievable opening monologue that left audiences speechless. [Ep98]

Costume Designer, JENNIFER STARZYK is a creative collaborator with over twenty five years in the film industry. She takes a character-driven approach with her own unique vision to serve the story and support the script. Her versatile yet distinct style has been showcased across a variety of genres and periods. Perhaps best known for the Netflix psychological series, Mindhunter. where Jennifer worked closely to create a restrained period look with renowned director David Fincher. Her range varies in tone as seen in Warner Bros Neo-Noir Reminiscence starring Hugh Jackman & Rebecca Ferguson; to the outlandish colorful contemporary in Bill & Ted Face The Music; to allowing documentary footage inform how Colin Firth and Toni Colette should look in aughts fashion for Max's The Staircase. Jennifer's latest work was A24 biopic, The Iron Claw, written and directed by Sean Durkin. The Iron Claw stars Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen White, Harris Dickinson and Hold McCallany and is a tragic film that tells the story of the Von Erich's. Spanning from late 1970s- 1990s, her costumes showcase the dynasty of wrestlers and help create the world of rural Texas. Upcoming work includes Amazon's Killer Heat, starring Joseph Gordon Levitt, Shailene Woodley and Richard Madden. This contemporary mystery was filmed on location in Greece and follows twin brothers who find themselves in a dangerous love triangle on an isolated island. The contemporary costumes highlight quiet luxury and showcase several Greek fashion brands for added authenticity. During the WGA & SAG strikes, Jennifer lent her energy and talent to help costume The Groundlings charity fundraiser, One Night Only. Having just days to outfit 35 performers for The Chorus Line. The musical featured Saturday Night Live alum Kristen Wiig, Will Forte, Ana Gasteyer amongst other incredible talent and helped raise over $200,000 for Motion Picture & Television Fund. All proceeds went to below the line affected by the strikes. Currently, she is designing a contemporary action comedy for Twentieth Century Fox titled, Eenie Meanie. Written and directed by Shawn Simmons. The film stars Samara Weaving as a reformed teenage getaway driver who is dragged back into her unsavory past when a former employer offers her a chance to save the life of her chronically unreliable ex-boyfriend. No matter the project, Jennifer Starzyk brings the same fierce spirit and powerful approach to designing costumes.
