Career Q&A with Christopher Meloni. Moderated by Jenelle Riley, Variety. Washington, D.C. native Christopher Meloni studied acting at the University of Colorado, Boulder, before graduating with a degree in History. He worked in construction and as a bouncer before breaking into acting, studying his craft in New York with legendary teacher Sanford Meisner. His television breakout role was on “NYPD Blue,” opposite Kim Delaney. That led to being cast on HBO's gritty landmark series “Oz,” playing the psychotic, bisexual serial killer, ‘Chris Keller.' In 1999, Meloni landed his starring role on the popular and long-running NBC series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” with the actor working in both series simultaneously until “Oz” ended its 6 year run in 2003. He continued on “Law & Order: SVU” for twelve seasons, earning an Emmy nomination for his performance as Detective Elliot Stabler. Meloni then returned to HBO in a pivotal arc as the head of the Vampire Authority, ‘Roman,' in Alan Ball's wildly popular drama, “True Blood;” and as Julie Louis-Dreyfus' trainer, ‘Ray,' in “Veep.” Meloni is currently co-starring in the Netflix limited event series, “Wet Hot American Summer” which is the prequel to the cult film in which he also co-starred. Meloni's other big screen credits include the August 2015 Sony Classics release, "Diary of a Teenage Girl " with Kristen Wiig; Greg Araki's "White Bird in a Blizzard"; "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For"; "Man of Steel"; "42"; "They Came Together"; "Small Time"; the Terry Gilliam films "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" and "Twelve Monkeys"; the Wachowskis' first film "Bound"; the romantic comedy blockbuster "Runaway Bride"; "Nights in Rodanthe"; and such cult favorites as "Wet Hot American Summer", "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle", and its first sequel, "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay".

Our guest today is a storyteller who knows great comedy. As a director, Paul Feig has manned beloved movies like Bridesmaids, Ghostbuster and The Heat, not to mention memorable episodes of smash hit TV shows like Arrested Development and The Office. When it comes to writing, he more often than not passes the baton to brilliant collaborators, like Annie Mumolo, Kristen Wiig and Katie Dippold, concentrating on bringing their scripts to life from the director's chair. On the occasions that he does write his own screenplays, however, it's always an absolute laugh riot, full of warmth, affection, inclusivity and infectious positivity. In the late ‘90s, Paul created Freaks and Geeks – a deeply influential sitcom following the exploits of a band of high school misfits. The actors portraying those misfits would go on to dominate American comedy for decades to come: James Franco, Seth Rogen and Jason Segel all got their breaks in the show, which ran for just one season in 1999.Its legacy has lived on, though, as has Paul's reputation as a storyteller who aspires to bring people together in the movies and shows he creates. In this revealing conversation, he breaks down for us not only that show's pilot, including the scene that he believes got the show cancelled, but also elements of his hilarious 2016 espionage comedy Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy,  for a sense of how writing comedy for TV  back in the '90s differs from writing comedy for the big screen today. It's a fascinating conversation – we hope you enjoy.Script Apart is hosted by Al Horner and produced by Kamil Dymek. Say what you want about Darren Aronofsky, he sure knows how to turn an anxiety dream into a panic inducing movie. The Running Scared boys try to hang on as the rollercoaster ride that is Mother! (2017) stirs up our paranoia and our patience for unwanted guests. Does the layering of symbolism add up to anything? Does it matter? Is this a film or an experience? Do you buy Jamie's uncle's 2 day rule? What would a crappy B-movie version of this film look like? Over a span of decades, Tracy Newman has used her creativity in folk song writing and singing, and in her pioneering work as a comedy writer for live performances and television audiences.  The origins of much of the comedy we enjoy today in the United States, came from a blossoming of talent that arrived on the scene 50 years ago now.  One of the places that became a hotbed of developing future comedic stars was a place called the GROUNDLINGS IMPROV THEATRE in Los Angeles, California, and Tracy was a founding member.   It was there, like a farm team in sports, that future Saturday Night Live (SNL) cast members honed their talent and their performance styles in front of an audience.  The likes of Melissa McCarthy, Will Farrell, Kristen Wiig, Phil Hartman and Lorraine Newman, to name a few, were plucked from the West Coast to arrive on the New York TV stage of SNL.   Tracy Newman takes us down the path from her folksinging days, to her trail of television sitcom writing with her partner John Stark, for popular shows like, Cheers, The Drew Carey Show, and her Emmy Award for the Ellen episode where Ellen announces to the world that she is Gay.  After leaving television writing she returned to song writing and has produced CDs with her band TRACY NEWMAN AND THE REINFORCEMENTS.  She also has created CDs for kids through her company, RUN ALONG HOME.  To hear her music, see her videos and purchase CDs, go to the website, www.tracynewman.com You can watch her Youtube videos and learn more about Tracy Newman and her career in entertainment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ew6DS2bXYmk

Marielle Heller's sister had gifted her the diaristic graphic novel “The Diary of a Teenage Girl: An Account in Words and Pictures” by Phoebe Gloeckner, and Heller instantly connected with it. She adapted it into a play and then, with Gloeckner's blessing and film rights, into a script. With the help of The Sundance Institute, Heller built the cast and team of creatives that would help her bring her vision to life. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Coming of Age Debuts series with Heller's 2015 film The Diary of a Teenage Girl. Does watching The Diary of a Teenage Girl feel like we're reading a diary? It's funny how the diary in the film is an audio one, recorded by Minnie, our protagonist and titular teenage girl. Is it weird that she's an artist always using her hands but recording an audio diary? A bit. That being said, it's not a gripe of ours at all, just something we noticed. We really connected with this story of Minnie coming into her own sexuality and figuring out what that means, even if it's not always in the best ways. Still, what Heller and Gloeckner give us (along with the stellar lead performance by Bel Powley) is a complicated character taking her own complicated path to figuring herself out, at the end of which we've seen true growth. It helps that Alexander Skarsgård plays opposite her, even if it is a bit... shall we say awkward?... that they connect given that he plays her mom's boyfriend and definitely someone who consciously makes the choice to sleep with a minor. But that allows for a conversation about finding your own sexuality, and how complicated that window of time is when you have your own sexual awakening, which almost always is before the official age of the adult label of 18. And certainly Minnie isn't shying away from sleeping with boys her own age either. We also love Kristen Wiig, Christopher Meloni, and the rest of the cast. The look captured by cinematographer Brandon Trost, production designer Jonah Markowitz, and costume designer Carmen Grande (not to mention hair and makeup) bring this world to life. It's a fantastic film, albeit a challenging one, but one worth watching and discussing. Check it out then tune in. The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins! BARB AND STAR GO TO VISTA DEL MAR Review

Cinema Death Cult

On this episode of Cinema Death Cult I talk about the terrific 2021 comedy Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar, written by and starring Kristin Wiig and Annie Mumolo, the writers of _Bridesmaids. _ I don't want to give any details away about _Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar _.This movie took me completely by surprise. From its trailer, I expected a mediocre comedy with awkward characters acting out some thin premise padded by direction-less improvisational riffing and awkward, cringe-inducing set pieces. But the movie threw curveball after curveball at me. It's an absurd masterpiece. Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar is the best comedy I've seen in a long time. But I think it's getting ignored. I think the trailer is to blame. The trailer withholds a lot of the tone, plot and characters from the movie which is great because it lets the actual movie sneak up on you. But it undersells how good the movie is. In a world of streaming content with a billion other options it makes this diamond in the rough comedic triumph easy to skip. And that sucks because it's really good! I want to hype it up. But at the same time I don't want to say too much about it because almost from the start it does things I didn't expect. Here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EBwBGTlGFQ)'s the trailer, which does an OK riff on the Netflix show Stranger Things and does a poor job of representing how great this movie really is. If the actor Jamie Dornan is reading this, I'm sorry I misstated your name as Jamie Dorner. But I call you “the handsome fella” several times, so your feelings shouldn't be too hurt. Also, I'm sorry I forgot which actress played Star and which played Barb and resorted to saying Annie Mumolo's name over and over. If Annie Mumolo is reading this, great work!

A few months back Sidey, Dan and Reegs sat down to talk about PAUL (2011), the Simon Pegg and Nick Frost comedy in which two sci-fi fans tour of the USA's UFO heartland crosses paths with an extraterresterrial named Paul. It really was a great episode, probably one of our strongest ever, but unfotunately none of us bothered to press the record button that night so several weeks later we attempted to review it again, occassionally misremembering things and being less confident in our take etc.  Having time to think about it again I didn't like it all that much. Paul is just Seth Rogen, Pegg and Frost are lost without Edgar Wright, qouting lines from other iconic franchises in by-the-numbers scenes does not constitute telling jokes in my opinion and there's a slightly sneery and superior pride in the movies atheism, often at the expense of crude jokes about christianity which is really just unnecessary. Just not funny enough given the collective talent here, supervised by SUPERBAD's Greg Mottola and a supporting cast featuring Kirsten Wiig, John Carrol Lynch, Jason Bateman and Jeffrey Tambor. The other guys liked it though so what do I know?

Today on the show, we have actor, writer, director Brian Petsos. Brian is the writer director of the new film, "Big Gold Brick" starring Andy Garcia, Oscar Isaac, Megan Fox and Lucy Hale just to name a few. After graduating from art school, Brian Petsos eventually began acting and improvising. While in the conservatory at Chicago's famed SecondCity, he started writing; and later he began making films. Since leaving Chicago for New York City, he has carefully expanded his repertoire to include varying wor ks that he has written, directed, produced, performed in, or some combination thereof.Petsos started his company, A Saboteur, with the mission of producing innovative, original, boundary - pushing films that challenge traditional expectations and underline artistic integrity. His work has run the gamut, from short form content on HBO and spots for commercial clients, to full - length feature films and writing scripts for major studios. But today he is primarily focused on writing, directing, and producing his own distinctly flavored work. Petsos's highly anticipated feature debut, BIG GOLD BRICK, will be released by Samuel Goldwyn Films in North America in winter of 2022.The film recounts the story of fledgling writer Samuel Liston (Emory Cohen) and his exper iences with Floyd Deveraux (Academy Award nominee Andy Garcia), the enigmatic middle - aged father of two who enlists Samuel to write his biography.Golden Globe winner Oscar Isaac, Megan Fox, Lucy Hale, and Shiloh Fernandez round out this incredible cast in key supporting roles. The film was written and directed by Petsos, and produced by Petsos and Greg Lauritano under Petsos's A Saboteur banner, with Executive Producers Isaac and Kristen Wiig.Prior to BIG GOLD BRICK, Petsos wrote, directed, and produced the highly lauded LIGHTNINGFACE (starring Isaac, executive produced by Isaac and Wiig; lightningface.com). The film was an Official Selection of over 30 festivals around the world — including the 60th edition of the BFI London Film Festival, among other high lights. It received a Best Actor nomination for Isaac at the 2017 Vaughan International Film Festival and a nomination for Best Narrative Comedy at the 2016 Miami short Film Festival, and it was the winner of both the Vortex Grand Prize at the 2016 Rhode I sland International Film Festival and Best Short Film at the 2016 Filmfestival Kitzbühel. The film premiered online in summer of 2017 as a highly coveted Vimeo Staff Pick and received an abundance of press coverage — from The Hollywood Reporter to The Huffin gton Post, from Indiewire to /Film, to Slate, BuzzFeed, Gizmodo, Film Threat, Nerdist, and many other outlets globally — which ignited virulent enthusiasm and a continuing flurry of social media chatter.Film School Rejects referred to it as, “Quite simply one of the most intriguing short films of 2017,” adding that, “if LIGHTNINGFACE is eligible for an Oscar Nomination...the other contenders should look out.”Brian and I had a very raw and open conversation about how difficult it was to get this project.Big Gold Brick recounts the story of fledgling writer Samuel Liston and his experiences with Floyd Deveraux, the enigmatic middle-aged father of two who enlists Samuel to write his biography. But the circumstances that lead up to this arrangement in the first place are quite astonishing—and efforts to write the biography are quickly stymied by ensuing chaos in this darkly comedic, genre-bending film.We really get into the weeds about how difficult it was for them to get it going off the ground. Just because he had major talent involved doesn't mean that it got any easier getting the budget together and so many other little gems.Enjoy my conversation with Brian Petsos.

Eugene Pack knows a thing or two about what it takes to write a compelling celebrity memoir – and yet he's never actually written one. As the creator and co-producer of the hit theatrical revue “Celebrity Autobiography,” developed with Dayle Reyfel, he has pushed audiences to consider what it means to live a book-worthy life and how it is that readers have come to accept the wit and wisdom and worldviews of our most celebrated personalities when they are presented on the page. The show has been staged in theaters all over the country, including runs on Broadway, on London's West End, and at the Sydney Opera House, with guest performers such as Kristen Wiig, Lily Tomlin, Mandy Patinkin, Paul Rudd, Billy Crystal, Maya Rudoph, Whoopi Goldberg and Martin Short helping to give hilarious voice to the so-called insights and dubious reflections of the famous and infamous. “Celebrity Autobiography” was awarded a Drama Desk Award for “Unique Theatrical Experience” when it debuted in New York to rave reviews, and it continues to delight audiences all over the world, drawing on an ever-changing slush pile of source material and an ever-evolving cast. An accomplished playwright, Pack's short original comedies are featured on his uniquely-imagined and endlessly-entertaining podcast, “The Pack Podcast,” performed by an assortment of talented actors, with proceeds going to the Actor's Fund, an organization that provides a safety net for performing artists and entertainment professionals. His full-length plays include “Columbus and Amsterdam,” “Sharpies” and “The Poets of Amityville,” as well as the autobiographical musical “To Be Loved,” written in collaboration with Motown founder Berry Gordy. Pack is also an Emmy-nominated writer and producer, and the creator and executive producer of CMT's longest-running series, “Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team.” Please support the sponsors who support our show.
