In this thought-provoking episode, I sit down with Nathan Maynard to explore restorative practices that truly change the way we approach student behavior. Nathan dives into the importance of restoration within the behavior process, emphasizing how forgiveness plays a crucial role in helping students learn and grow from their actions. We also discuss practical mindfulness techniques that can empower school staff to stay balanced and resilient in challenging situations. Plus, Nathan shares insights into the High Five application, a powerful tool designed to support schools and educators in creating a positive, connected environment. This conversation is packed with actionable strategies to build a more compassionate and effective school culture. About Nathan Maynard: When Nathan was younger, he struggled in school. He was diagnosed with ODD and ADHD combined with a high amount of trauma. Nathan was motivated by fitting in and pursued that by associating with paths to criminality as a kid. These lived experiences later helped Nathan become a successful youth worker, teacher, and school administrator for over 11 years. Nathan was nominated and won "Youth Worker of the Year" in Indiana voted by the youth he worked with in the juvenile justice system across the county he lived after being a youth worker for 7 years This work led him then to teach and later become an administrator in two cutting-edge charter networks. At Goodwill's Excel Center, he helped students become college-and-career ready with work-based education and skill development. At Purdue's Polytechnic High School, he was the Dean of Culture and helped found the first high school. Nathan is now the global thought leader in discipline. With a bachelor's degree in Neuroscience from Purdue University, he combined hard lived experience with research to understand how trauma impacts students, learning environments, and brain development. These experiences inspired him to co-write the best-selling book "Hacking School Discipline," which has been recognized internationally as a best-seller in 23 countries and used in over 400 universities. He is currently the CEO and Founder of Highfive to create connected school communities and reduce recidivism in negative classroom behaviors with reimagining discipline practices internationally. In the late '90s, Joe Magliocco made a small investment to become the sole owner of the Michter's whiskey trademark, a historic brand originally founded by a Swiss Mennonite farmer in the 1700s that had since fallen into obscurity. The trademark only cost Magliocco $245 to snap up at a time when consumers and distributors wanted nothing to do with the category. Thanks to a sound strategy, great team building, and a meticulous method of production, the revitalized brand was named The World's Most Admired Whisky by Drinks International. The Park Street Insider Podcast is pleased to welcome one of the industry's top-tier brand-builders, Joeseph Magliocco, to discuss his journey developing a forgotten entity into a global phenomenon. Get a tax write off when you give a financial gift to Java with Jen! Go to: www.PATREON.COM/JAVAWITHJEN ——————————————————— Single moms are the biggest superheroes of today's culture in my opinion. They work their tails off to provide and parent and hopefully raise good humans. These women (and men) who parent by themselves deserves their own holiday, but since I can't give them that I decided to give them their own episode! In today's show I interview Gail Showalter who has a ministry to single moms and helps them get through college, get back on their feet to provide for their family and also encourages them in so many practical and emotional ways. This episode is a new favorite so you don't want to miss it! —————————————————— MORE ABOUT GAIL: In southeast Texas I'm known as the “Old Bird with Feathers of Wisdom for Women and a Soft Spot for Single Moms.” That is because I've worked with single mothers since 2007. During my time working with individual moms I came to realize that the moms who had a skill or a degree managed much better than the ones who didn't. I am eager to share my knowledge acquired in the school of hard knocks as well as from years of study. As a professional I have worked in many areas in the business world and the world of education. I taught high school and later I taught Braille to children with visual impairments. I even taught on the college level for a few semesters. My formal education includes a B.A. in Speech, Art and Education, and a Master's Degree from The University of Texas in Curriculum and Instruction. In 2007 I established a nonprofit called SMORE for Women especially for single mothers. SMORE is an acronym for Single Moms :: Overjoyed, Rejuvenated and Empowered. I am married to Sam, and we each have three grown children and fifteen grandchildren and two adorable miniature poodles. I use stories to illustrate the points I teach. I believe that we can learn life lessons when we look at the lives of others. My own stories have been published in books and national magazines. You may visit my web sites to learn more about my work. It is one of my greatest pleasures to share my knowledge with others. ——————————————- Thank you for rating, reviewing and sharing the show on social media, this makes such an enormous difference on the reach of this show! A MOM'S DESPERATION MARK 7:24-30 At some point, most, if not all, moms feel a sense of desperation about their child. The reasons vary, but the mother's heart wants relief, restoration, or s help for her child. Mark 7 tells of a mother's desperation and provides an example for any desperate mother today. In this episode, I ask the question “Are Honors, Advanced Placement, and Dual Credit classes worth it?” This episode stems from years of conversations with friends, family, colleagues, and the observations I've made in the school system. Some might view this as a “coffee fueled rant” but it's one that needs to be had and heard. Check it out for yourself and let me know what you think! This episode is sponsored by Smore.
