Short Gems: Coffee = Life
Our guest is Merry White who is the author of Coffee Life in Japan, an absolutely insightful and fascinating book about Japanese coffee as well as unique Japanese culture and society. Merry also teaches courses on various topics including Japan, food anthropology, and urban anthropology at Boston University.Japanese people started drinking coffee fairly recently compared to their centuries-old custom of tea drinking, but Japan is the number five importer of coffee beans as of 2021. Also, over the last century Japan has developed a remarkably unique coffee shop culture. For example, you may have heard the word Kissaten, which is a distinctive style of coffee shop. In this episode, we will discuss why Merry got into Japanese coffee culture, how Japanese coffee culture differs from the rest of the world, what functions coffee shops perform uniquely in Japanese society, the concept of Kissaten and much, much more! Cafes offer up this unique third space - not home, nor work - for people to be private in a public space. Merry White, professor of Anthropology at Boston University, studies just this: cafes and cafe culture, but in Japan. Her book, Coffee Life in Japan, “part ethnography, part memoir”, traces Japan’s cafe’s society over the past century and a half. Meant To Be Eaten is powered by Simplecast.
If you have ever been to downtown West Palm Beach you probably have been to or know about SubCulture Coffee. The Coffee is excellent but there is something going on there that lives and breathes outside of your coffee cup. The energy, vibe, community, whatever you want to call it. In my experience, it has a lot to do with Sean Scott. Sean seems to have mastered coffee of Clematis St. Now he expanding the personal vibe to podcasting. The Coffee Life is his new podcast. When you subscribe or tune in don't expect barista lessons although someday you might get some. Expect lifestyle, community, and Sean's journey toward an authentic way of being. Here is a video from the Subculture website I think it gives you a snapshot of who Sean is what he is up to. After your done listening to the City Voice Podcast don't forget to subscribe to The Coffee Life podcast.

Merry (Corky) White‘s new book Coffee Life in Japan (University of California Press, 2012) opens with a memory of stripping naked and being painted blue in an underground coffeehouse, and closes with a guide to some of the author’s favorite cafes in Japan. This framing alone is worth the price of admission. In addition to being an extraordinarily spirited, witty, and enjoyable book, however, Coffee Life in Japan is also a thoughtfully argued and exhaustively researched account of the history and ethnography of coffee and cafes in modern Japan. This wide-ranging and trans-disciplinary work explores the spaces of the modern cafe, be they social, solitary, or occasionally silent and sprinkled with stuffed animals. White introduces readers to chapters-ful of fascinating characters, including passionate coffee experts who train like dancers to learn to create the perfect cup. This is a surprising book, a pleasure to read, and a treasure for anyone interested in the history of drink, of global commodities, and of Japan. Learn more about your ad choices.
