In this episode of Peace Is Here, host Avis Kalfsbeek reflects on The Birth of the Khalsa by Nikky-Guninder Kaur Singh—a groundbreaking work that reimagines Sikh identity through a feminist, peace-centered lens. Drawing from her own journey through compassionate Kundalini yoga and a growing curiosity about women's roles in spiritual traditions, Avis explores how Singh's writing invites us to see the divine as nurturing, liberating, and powerfully maternal. You'll hear a narrated reading of a portion of the book's Introduction and a reflection on why the spiritual wisdom of the Khalsa—often told through masculine frames—may hold transformative potential for peacebuilding today. We also learn about Nikky-Guninder Kaur Singh, whose poetic scholarship opens doors to a more inclusive spiritual imagination. (I am not an affiliate for these products.) Interview with Erim Kaur:Erim Kaur is the founder of the hair and beard care brand ByErim and a beauty influencer. Erim's career did not start in the haircare industry. Early in her professional life, Erim worked as a social media consultant for various companies. It wasn't until she founded ByErim that her professional work with hair started. Erim lost her mother at just eight years old to cancer. This life experience and the absence of such a prominent figure in Erim's life is what perpetuated her love for hair. Since then, Erim has looked at hair as a way of preserving the beauty and significance of her mother's hair while holding family traditions close to her heart. Her mother was not the only female figure in her life who cared about hair. Erim's journey began with her Dhadi or grandmother. She was a woman of tradition, with a treasure trove of magical remedies passed down through generations. Erim's relationship with her grandmother is where she learned to create the formulas that would soon be used in her own hair products. It took Erim fifteen years to create the perfect formula but today she is the owner of this luxury hair care brand built on the foundation of love, loss, and a deeply personal journey. ByErim features a variety of hair and beard products, including oils, scrubs, and accessories. On top of her successful business, Erim also uses her social media pages to form online connections. She views herself as an older sister for those who grew up without a mum or sisters. Erim's career has taken off both on social media and behind the scenes. In 2022 she won the Natwest & Telegraph's #1 Female Entrepreneur to Watch award. In this special episode of the Skies we're Under we continue to explore our theme of community, and question what happens when inclusivity is eroded, either within our existing communities, or within the disability community itself. To discuss this important subject, Rachel is joined by the wonderful Ramandeep Kaur. Ramandeep reflects on her own experiences within her ethnic community, how that changed when her son with Down Syndrome was born without the fanfare she had come to expect. Rachel and Ramandeep cover it all, what does inclusivity actually look like, where do you go when you lose connection with community, what do you do when you don't see people ‘like your family' in the places that you go to for connection and support. It's full of reflection, and hope, and humour. There is also the usual chat from Sarah and Lucy, who are both adamant that all aspects of motherhood should be celebrated. You can find out more about Ramandeep at her website. We'd love to hear from you – we love sharing stories, we love hearing how things are going, the good, the bad, the snotty-crying ugly. The imPROVE study aims to bridge the gap in patient-reported outcomes (PRO) data for Black women with breast cancer by enhancing engagement with tailored electronic PROs (ePROs) and partnering with community leaders to address barriers and ensure accessibility and relevance in community cancer care settings. In this episode, CANCER BUZZ speaks with Manraj Kaur, PhD, investigator and lead faculty for research and innovation at Patient-Reported Outcomes, Value, and Experience (PROVE) center at Mass General Brigham and Andrea Pusic, MD, chief of division of plastic and reconstructive surgery, director of PROVE center at Mass General Brigham, and professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School about the imPROVE study's efforts to enhance Black women's engagement in ePROs in breast cancer treatment. Dr. Kaur sheds light on strategies to improve technology accessibility for Black women in their cancer care center by providing iPads and refined usability features on the imPROVE app. Dr. Pusic highlights imPROVE implementation results at five community cancer centers, including utilizing local champions and equitable access to resources. “When we make sure Black women are included, we gain a more accurate picture of health, we can design better care, and then we take a real step towards closing the health equity gap.” – Manraj Kaur “The imPROVE study is all about increasing accessibility of patient-reported outcome measurements to Black breast cancer patients receiving care in community cancer centers.” – Andrea Pusic Manraj Kaur, PhD Investigator, Lead Faculty for Research and Innovation Patient-Reported Outcomes Value Experience (PROVE) Center Brigham and Women's Hospital Boston, MA Andrea Pusic, MD Chief of Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Director, PROVE Center Brigham and Women's Hospital Professor of Surgery Harvard Medical School Boston, MA Resources: ACCC imPROVE Study Blog - https://www.accc-cancer.org/acccbuzz/blog-post-template/accc-buzz/2024/06/18/the-power-of-patient-reported-outcome-measures-to-community-cancer-centers? Have you listened to the FULL EPISODE yet?"I had no access point to this 'industry' of publishing and literature. But what I had was a community on Tumblr and Instagram of young women who felt so seen by these words." - Rupi KaurAt just 21 years old, Rupi Kaur defied traditional publishing wisdom and followed her instinct to keep her poetry collection "Milk and Honey" intact, rather than fragment it for literary journals. Despite her professor's warnings against self-publishing, Kaur recognized that her community of young, progressive readers on Tumblr and Instagram were connecting deeply with her vulnerable explorations of taboo topics. This intuitive understanding of her audience and unwavering commitment to her artistic vision led her to self-publish, initially hoping to reach just a few hundred readers. What began as a passion project quickly transformed into an unprecedented literary phenomenon. Without fully grasping the significance of her early success, Kaur had sold 18,000 copies through grassroots efforts and her website in just five months. Her breakthrough moment came in April 2015 when a powerful photograph she posted online went viral, drawing hundreds of thousands of new readers to her poetry. Rather than pursuing her planned legal career, Kaur's courage to share her most vulnerable work and bypass traditional gatekeepers revolutionized modern poetry publishing, proving that authentic connection with readers transcends industry conventions.Sign up for the Greatness newsletter!
