Jim Jacobs is an educator, researcher, president and radical. That's also part of the title of his new book, "Moving a Community College Forward: My Story as an Educator, Researcher, President, and Radical," which is part autobiography/part history of the community college movement. In this episode of CC Voice, Jacobs discusses his long career at Macomb Community College in Michigan, where he started in 1967 as a part-time instructor and activist, and retired as its president in 2017. He's also one of the nation's foremost researchers and practitioners in workforce development at community colleges, leading Macomb and its community through major changes to one of its main employers, the auto industry.  

Collective bargaining is the foundation that organized labor is built on. Truly, it's at the heart of what unions are and what unions do for their members. When UUP negotiates a contract for its members, our union has a equal hand in determining terms of employment—including compensation, job protections, benefits, work hours and more—with our employer, the state of New York. Over the years, UUP has achieved many gains through collective bargaining, from securing health care benefits and per-course minimum pay for part-time employees to annual across-the-board salary increases for our members and everyone we represent in our bargaining unit. In our current contract, which expires July 1, we negotiated to have New York's Paid Parental Leave—up to 12 weeks of guaranteed, fully paid leave following the birth, adoption or foster placement of a child—added to our agreement with the state. We also established 7-year and 12-year retention awards based on an employee's length of service—a UUP goal for decades. We also maintained our health benefits package with no increases in copays or employee share of premiums. These gains were not easily gotten. They never are. In this episode of The Voice Podcast, host Fred Kowal--who's also UUP's statewide president--talks to three people who were at the table to negotiate UUP's last three contracts with the state of New York. They are: Former statewide Vice President for Academics Jamie Dangler, chief negotiator for our 2011-2016 contract, easily one of UUP's most difficult contracts to negotiate.  Elizabeth Hough, UUP's former counsel to the president, who was at the table for two UUP contracts, the 2016-2022 agreement and the union's current 2022-2026 contract, which expires July 1. UUP Chief Negotiator Bret Benjamin served on UUP's Negotiations Team for the 2016-22 agreement and was chief negotiator for our current contract. He's also chief negotiator for a new contract we're negotiating with the state. In Labor Lookback, Mike Lisi explores the impact President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration had on workers and the entire country during the Great Depression. The perspectives and experiences she shares are her own and do not represent her employer or any organization she's affiliated with.   In this episode, we're discussing neuroaffirming care, "dispensing" practical tips to help you better serve patients on the autism spectrum, and providing context to help you understand the broader ecosystem that patients on the spectrum and their caregivers navigate every day. Once you hear about neuroaffirming care, it just might change the way you approach all neurodiverse patients and possibly improve your relationships with them, too.   At the very end of this episode, I give an update about my son Kraig, who is now 23 and has autism.   Take-aways from this episode If you've met one person with autism, you've met one person with autism. Every person with autism is different. Curiosity is a clinical skill. When you're curious, you get the information you need to have positive patient interactions. Presume competence, but verify understanding. Use tools like the teach-back method, especially when a caregiver is involved. Meet patients where they are. Tailor your patient counseling to meet your patient's needs. That might mean slowing down your rate of speech during patient counseling, adjusting your communication style, including a parent or caregiver in the conversation, or being mindful of sensory needs like noise, light, taste, texture, or smell. Social stories are a useful tool. Use pictures paired with statements to help patients on the spectrum learn about a shot or a medication before they experience it. Language matters. People with autism are "people first." Don't objectify or dehumanize them with language - intentionally or accidentally.  Pharmacists are consistent touch points in our fragmented US healthcare system. We may see neurodiverse patients more often than their primary care or other providers see them. You are a constant in someone's life. Think ability first. Think about what you are able to do as that constant in your patient's life. The next time you interact with a patient who is neurodiverse, try doing just one thing differently. Wait a little longer for your patient to respond, ask one more question, use their name, etc. Those small moments may even save you time later. They build trust, prevent confusion, reduce callbacks, and help patients get it right the first time.    These calls to action will make your care more effective, not add additional burdens.   If this episode resonated with you, I'd love to hear from you. This year, it's under the hood—and that's where it belongs.” At the close of the Channel Partners Conference & Expo 2026, I spoke with Dean Manzuri of UniVoIP about what changed from last year to this year—and what that means for partners navigating the evolution of AI and voice. Manzuri's perspective reflects a broader industry shift. A year ago, AI dominated the conversation as a headline feature. Today, it's becoming embedded—less visible, but far more impactful. Instead of being marketed as a standalone capability, AI is increasingly integrated into platforms and workflows, quietly improving performance, automation, and user experience. That shift aligns closely with UniVoIP's core mission: to be the best voice provider for Microsoft Teams. The company's value proposition is straightforward—help organizations migrate their phone systems into Teams seamlessly, while ensuring reliability and a strong user experience. From a channel perspective, the event delivered what many providers were looking for: new partner engagement and clearer signals on where the market is heading. Manzuri noted that UniVoIP connected with a range of new partners and used the event to validate its direction, particularly around Teams voice and integrated communications. The AI conversation reinforced that direction. Recovery is possible, and it's probable. Poison Prevention Educators talk to students and communities about substance abuse prevention. Opioid use disorder has many possible entry points, including using pain killers from surgery or dental work, experimentation, and accidental use. Pharmacists have the opportunity to counsel on proper use and storage of MOUD. Counsel to take oral doses in private, so vulnerable individuals cannot see. Vulnerable individuals, like children or DD adults want to imitate the behavior of others. Avoid medication errors. Remove distractions while taking or giving medications, and read the label every time. Keep a personal MAR, if needed, to remember if a dose has been taken.  If a medication error happens, get help (Poison Help or 9-1-1), forgive yourself, and continue your road to recovery.  Narcan is import for anyone in recovery from opioid addiction to have. But, a person experiencing an OD will be unable to give themselves Narcan. Make sure your patients educate the people around them about what Narcan is, when to use it, and how to administer it.  As a general rule, counsel on calling 9-1-1 after giving a dose of Narcan. It can wear off.  Pharmacists should counsel on risks of keeping MOUD in the home: accidental use by a curious, opioid-naive child, confusion with other meds, accidental second dose, etc. Call Poison Help right away with exposure concerns, but skip right to 9-1-1 if the person is not breathing, unconscious, or having a seizure.  Poison Center Staff are experts in poison information. They help healthcare professionals and the general public with questions. If you call, you're in good hands. Adults of all ages may be in recovery. It's not just a health condition for young people.  Get Poison Help Line magnets for your pharmacy, and share them with your patients. If you need some magnets, call 1-800-222-1222.  March is Poison Prevention Month in the United States. National Poison Prevention Week in the US is March 15-21, 2026, and the theme is, "When the unexpected happens, Poison Help is here for you." Include "in recovery from opioid addiction" as a health condition at the pharmacy and with medical providers.  Advise patients to inscribe, "Do not give opioids" on medic alert jewelry. Similar advice, advise patient to include "do not give opioids" in the "health app" on their smartphone in case of emergency. Pharmacists (this is a tough one). If you see something, say something. Protect your patient's recovery. If something on your prescription monitoring program suggests that your patient is in recovery, but they are trying to fill prescriptions for opioids, protect their recovery. Maybe a well-meaning dentist, doctor, or surgeon wrote a prescription and didn't know the whole story. Or, maybe your patient wants to relapse. If you see something, say something, even if it feels awkward. Prevent relapses and maybe overdoses with patients who have a lower tolerance for opioids.  Be skeptical of natural products and supplements that have been promised to help with opioid withdrawal.  Terminology matters. Know your audience, and reflect their preferred language back to them. Avoid terms that are stigmatizing, like "junkie." Our guest on The Voice Podcast is Congressman Paul Tonko, a Democrat who represents New York's 20th Congressional District. A longtime state Assembly member who was elected to Congress in 2008, Tonko has been a fighter for his constituents, for higher education and for organized labor. He's come out against the war in Iran, calling it reckless and unjustified. He's also called for the abolition of U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, citing the death and destruction the agency has caused under President Trump's cruel immigration crackdown and the fatal shootings of two Minneapolis protesters—both U.S. citizens—by federal agents. As the ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Environment, Tonko blasted the administration for its Feb. 12 decision to repeal the Environmental Protection Agency's “endangerment finding,” a long-standing, scientifically proven conclusion that greenhouse gases are dangerous to humans and the planet.He stood with United University Professions in our fight against the Trump administration's drastic 2025 cuts to federal research funding. This is a follow up to episode 354 of The Pharmacist's Voice Podcast, which I published during the World Series in October 2025. That curiosity led me to join my county's Addiction Task Force in 2017, where I learned from many people who were already deeply engaged in prevention, treatment, and recovery work.   Over time, and with a great deal of support, I helped organize Faith Community Discussions about addiction. The goal was simple: to help faith leaders feel better prepared to respond with compassion, accurate information, and local resources when someone turned to them for help. I didn't do this work alone. I'm grateful for the collaboration and guidance of many people and organizations, including Pastor Jeffrey Bischoff (pictured in the episode artwork), Nate Kehlmeier (featured in Episode 7 of The Pharmacist's Voice Podcast), the Wood County Addiction Task Force, and the Wood County Alcohol, Drug Addiction, and Mental Health Services Board.   I'm sharing these experiences not as a blueprint, but as an example of what's possible when pharmacists stay curious, collaborate, and focus on getting it right for the people who need help. Just pronunciations.   Journavx = jur-NAV-ix jur, like Journey (Bringing Journavx to market was a long journey ~27 years.) NAV, which is the name of the voltage-gated sodium channel that Journavx blocks. Journavx blocks NAV 1.8. ix, like "fix." Emphasize NAV. The term “exquisite empathy” describes a protective practice used by mental health therapists. It's the practice of being deeply compassionate and emotionally attuned to others while maintaining clear, healthy boundaries to protect against burnout.   During this episode, I discuss empathy, compassion fatigue, burnout, exquisite empathy, and affirmations. In this episode of The Voice Podcast, UUP President Fred Kowal talks with National Wildlife Federation President and CEO Collin O'Mara. Kowal, who hosts the podcast, is chair of the NWF's board of directors. O'Mara discusses how he became the NWF's president and CEO and what led him to the post. He and Kowal talk about the intricacies of navigating political channels to protect and preserve the nationwide organization's conservation efforts and move its agenda forward. They talk about organized labor's role in conservation and enviromental efforts and discuss the NWF's collaboration with unions and union organizations, including the Blue Green Alliance. O'Mara also strongly supports UUP's fight against proposed SUNY cuts to faculty and staff and important environmental, conservation and forestry programs and facilities at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. And so the idea of contracting right now, especially as the state is trying to argue that its a leader on cutting climate action, and given some of the other things that have happened last few years, you can't win the future unless you have the talent to actually be there to meet the moment in the future right now.""And we're seeing this across the board, right? We're seeing the disinvestment in public institutions, you know, across the country, and it's not specific to New York. But of all the areas to disinvest and not invest in the folks that are gonna help solve the climate crisis and biodiversity crisis in this moment and also create the jobs and the opportunities of the future is just absolutely ludricous."O'Mara became the National Wildlife Federation's president and CEO in 2014, overseeing America's largest wildlife conservation organization, with 52 state and territorial affiliates and more than 6 million members and supporters. He is majoring in Business Analytics. Nathan turned 50 in June. He's looking forward to adopting a Labradoodle this month.  As a family, we have been doing summer things, like grilling, riding bikes, going to the Farmers Market in town, visiting ice cream shops, and more. Nathan and I celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary in June, and I celebrated my 47th birthday in July. Our backyard remodeling project is finally done!
