This week’s show was all set when some tragic news changed a good portion of the broadcast. Yes, there was still the mix of old and new tunes that had been originally planned. But I could not help but make room for a couple of remembrances of fabulous artists who had passed away in recent days. The first death was Jack Lee, who got his start in The Nerves, a band that also featured Paul Collins and Peter Case. A song he wrote for that band, “Hanging on the Telephone”, was later made famous, and he also wrote hits for Paul Young (“Come Back and Stay”) and Suzi Quatro (“You Are My Lover”). He passed away on May 26 of colon cancer. The other tragic passing hits hard. Throughout the past few years, Justine Covault’s music has been a regular feature of The Ledge. I first became aware of her with her Rum Bar Records releases as Justine and the Unclean and Justine’s Black Threads. She then moved on and started Red On Red Records, a lable that regularly put out some fabulous Boston-based rock and roll. Earler today, her daughter, Haley, announced on Facebook that Covault had passed away, […]

Right when I first started ATB in 2016, emails asking to be a guest were few and far between. One of the first requests I ever got that year was from my next guest, who I never actually met until this past summer.Musician Justine Covault had herself just started her band Justine and The Unclean. She's someone who gets stuff done. From co-founding female-fronted rock festivalWhistleStop Rock to starting a monthly residency at The Plough And Stars with 'The Mess Around', Justine has ventured into new territory with her new label Red On Red Records. Her support and enthusiasm for the Boston music community and for her roster of (mostly) Boston bands are infectious, so much so that the great Sir David Minehan of The Neighborhoods and Woolly Mammoth Sound is collaborating with her to offer Red Mammoth Concerts.I'll let her tell the story. I just wish she had an extra swizzle stick to give me.
Justine Covault took time from her busy schedule to talk to us! She not only fronts one of the coolest bands around - Justine And The Unclean - but also started her own label(Red On Red Records) during the pandemic. Red On Red have already released a bunch of cool recordings and have also put together some solid events both virtually and live. During the interview we hit on a myriad of topics including some exciting news about one of our fav bands, The Neighborhoods, and a legendary band she played in many moons ago (Malachite)... In the early 20 th century, physicists discovered cosmic rays- energetic particles zooming through deep space. Many of these come from the sun, and can cause the northern lights. However, a few, very mysteriously, come from somewhere else with enormous energy. “The real puzzle is no one has any idea what in the universe is capable of doing that," said Corbin Covault, professor of physics at Case Western Reserve University. "There's some ideas, like massive black holes sucking material down in the middle of galaxies, but when they do the calculations it's really, really not obvious.” To investigate the origin of these mysterious particles, scientists like Covault from all over the world teamed up to build the Pierre Auger observatory, in Argentina. “It's literally the size of Rhode Island - 3,000 square kilometers - spread out over the ground. Our sixteen hundred particle detectors, they're primarily they're just pure water,” Covault said. “But when the particles hit the water tank they

When it seems hackers and security breaches happen as quickly as news outlets can report them, one data security company is taking a "hands-on" approach to digital identity. On this episode of the Software Tech Podcast, we sat down with Covault founder and CEO Louie Gasparini to discuss how biometrics are the new wave of digital security. Gasperini has been involved in identity security since "identity started on the Internet in building the first online banking system at Wells Fargo back in 1996," Gasparini said. "At Covault, we figured identity should be something that you control, like you do with your driver's license, membership card or credit cards that prove who you are," the security veteran said. "It should be like that where you're given an online identity that you can fully control." Covault is a digital encryption mobile app for consumers to keep their own personal data and important personally-identifying documents safe and at their disposal with biometric key encryption. Gasparini says, "You should be in control." For the latest news, videos, and podcasts in the Software & Electronics Industry, be sure to subscribe to our industry publication.
