We all face pain—whether it's loss, illness, anxiety, or feeling completely alone. The real question is: What do we turn to when we're suffering? In today's message, Pastor Will Yih opens up about how even the deepest pain doesn't have to lead to isolation. Through a story of someone cast out from society and met with radical compassion, we're reminded that healing often begins not with answers—but with presence, courage, and taking that first step toward something (or someone) greater than the pain.Whether you've been wrestling with grief, burnout, or just trying to make sense of life, this is a message that meets you where you are.--Support content like this and the vision of Sandals Church at http://sandalschurch.com/support/Join our email list for content updates: http://sandalschurch.com/subscribeDownload the Sandals Church App: http://sandalschurch.com/app/If you have questions, need prayer or want to get connected, please email us anytime at online@sandalschurch.com!
Why were the priests such an important part of ancient Israel? This week, in part 2 of our series on the priests, we see how necessary they were in separating the clean from the unclean, as God explained in the Law to the Israelites. Did “unclean” indicate sin? Not always. Uncleanness was simply a part of being human in a ... Gary answers email questions that he has received recently about Romans 11 and what "all Israel" being saved means. The most influential and popular view is Dispensationalism and its understanding of this passage is to split it off and push it far into the future. This doesn't work exegetically or contextually, where Paul is talking about his own present day.
In this Bible study, we look at Leviticus chapter 13 and the process that the priest would go through to diagnose defiling skin diseases (or “Leprosy” as labeled in some Bible translations). We look at Leprosy (known today as Hansen's disease) and walk through each of the “defiling skin diseases” outlined in the chapter. We also talk about why a person with Leprosy had to call out “unclean-unclean” as they walked down the street.Outline:01:45 - CLEAN / UNCLEAN - do not confuse “unclean” with being judged by God, or with being “unloved” by the community. To be unclean meant you were not cleared to approach the Lord in the Tabernacle. You were not cleared for entry, AND if you were labeled “unclean” and you had contact with anyone who Was clean, they are now unclean as well and have to go through the cleansing rites to become clean (cleared to approach the Lord).04:41 -“Leprosy” or “Defiling Skin Diseases?” Why do the translations differ in what word they use for chapters 13 and 14? The Hebrew word for defiling skin disease, traditionally translated as 'leprosy,' was used for various diseases affecting the skin.05:55 - define the Word “Leprosy” Hebrew: TṢāraʿaṯh “tsaw-rah'-ath” צָרַעַתLeprosy is a real thing. It existed in Jesus' day (as it does today). Today it is known as Hansen's disease because the word “Leprosy” has such a negative connotation to it.New International Bible Dictionary p.273World Health Organization Article on Leprosy: https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/leprosy14:25 - Leviticus 13.1-8 (Reading and discussion of)18:12 - Leviticus 13.9-17 (Reading and discussion of)21:12 - Leviticus 13.18-23 - Boils (Reading and discussion of). 22:11 - See also: Exodus 9.8-12 and Job 2.7-8. We are continuing our way through the clean and unclean segment of Leviticus (chapters 11-15). In this Bible study we look at the purification rites associated with giving birth to a child. Dave talks again about what it means to be “clean” and “unclean.” Dave does spend a good deal of time talking about circumcision, as it is solidified in the law as a requirement of all Jewish boys on the 8th day. What does Paul mean when he speaks of circumcision of the heart?Outline:00:13 - Introduction Clean & unclean segment 11-1501:14 - Unclean is not bad, and clean is not necessarily “good” it is simply a label for a person to know whether they have properly prepared, set themselves apart to go to the tabernacle and participate in a worship service. It is neither bad nor good, but more so “clear” or “not clear” for worship. God made provision for the cleansing and restoration of anyone who became “unclean” or “defiled.” Remember, unclean is not necessarily “bad.” In chapter 15, we will talk about discharges, which have to do with both the male and the female reproductive system, which God designed and called “good.”05:23 - Read all of Leviticus 1206:47 - Blood is important as it relates to the sacrifices as well as to cleanliness. 07:43 - Leviticus 12.2 - A son or a daughterCeremonially unclean for 7 days. (8th day, circumcise the boy - we will discuss) - Then wait 33 days before going to the temple. A total wait of 40 days.07:43 - Why was there a period of time after a woman gives birth when she is called “unclean?”10:30 - Why is there a difference between a son and a daughter as it relates to how long the purification time should be?13:16 - Leviticus 12.3 - Circumcision Gen 17:10-14; 12.2-3; 21.4; Luke 2.21; Jer 4.4; Phil 3.4-9; Rom 2.25-29; Col 2.10-11; Eph 2.8-9Paul is saying that circumcision is an outward sign of being set apart for God. But even if you have that outward sign, yet inside are sinful, the outward sign is pointless. A circumcised body and a sinful heart are at odds with each other.Paul says that we ought to focus on the condition of the heart. You are the Lord's, do you acknowledge that with your heart and your lips? Don't worry about your outward signs, your “good deeds.” Worry first about your heart and your personal, intimate relationship with God.26:33 - Leviticus 12.6-8A burnt offering and a sin offering.CEB & the NABRE - have “purification offering” for Lev 5.Luke 2.22-24Support Iron Sheep Ministries: https://Ironsheep.org/donateListen to the podcast: https://anchor.fm/ironsheepContact Dave & the ISM team: info@ironsheep.orgBe notified of each new teaching, join the email list: http://eepurl.com/g-2zAD

What did Paul mean in Romans 14:14 when he wrote, "nothing is unclean in itself"? Did he believe that the Torah's distinction between clean and unclean food had been erased? Or is he talking about something else entirely? Joining me today to discuss this is Rob Vanhoff. He is a biblical scholar, author, and instructor at TelosTorah Bible Academy. I'm excited to have Rob with us to talk about this passage.Connect with Rob Vanhoff:YouTubeTelosTorah Bible AcademyRob's BookMessiah Matters
We start a new segment of Leviticus, looking at what is “clean” and “unclean” for the Israelites. We must remember that “unclean” is not necessarily bad, it just means that it is not holy or fit for use in worship of God in the tabernacle. Being “clean” or “unclean” was a designation related to someone's ability to participate in the worship at the tabernacle. If you were “unclean,” you had to go through the cleansing process to become “clean” in order to enter the tabernacle courtyard. It was all about being set apart and prepared to approach the Lord. In this Bible study, we look at the first of 5 chapters on cleanliness, looking at what foods are clean and unclean. Outline:06:16 - Overview of Leviticus 11-15Leviticus 11 - food - what is clean and may be eaten, and what is unclean and not to be eatenLeviticus 12 - cleanliness and purification after childbirthLeviticus 13 - skin diseases, fungus & moldsLeviticus 14 - cleansing skin diseases, fungus & moldsLeviticus 15 - discharges causing uncleanness01:17 - Why are these chapters on cleanliness here? Why are they so odd at times? What was their purpose? Why did all this even exist in the first place - IT MAKES NO SENSE. Give me just a few minutes and I will give a quick explanationThe principal duties of the Israelite priesthood1. Distinguish between the Holy and the common2. We sometimes forget that no Gentiles (i.e., non-Jewish folks) were present to receive the pouring out of the Holy Spirit during the first Pentecost. To be sure, eventually there would be Gentile followers of the Way of Jesus, and those Gentiles would be baptized with the fire of the Holy Spirit. The story of the Gentile Pentecost teaches us that, despite our perceptions of ourselves, we are not qualified to determine who is and isn't welcome at God's table. This Sunday, we are celebrating Youth Sunday in The Loft. The Grapple youth will participate in worship by leading prayer, reading scripture, and playing with the handbells. We are also excited that three of our graduating high school seniors, Oz, Lauren, and Will, will offer their reflections on the role that Westwood UMC has played in their lives. We hope that you can join us as we celebrate our amazing youth and youth leadership. www.TheLoftLA.org
Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. And today's shout-out goes to Jay T Patterson from Verona, MO. Jay, thank you for standing with us through Project23. Your support helps deliver healing to people. This one's for you. Our text today is Mark 5:25-29: And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. — Mark 5:25-29 As Jesus walks with Jairus toward a dying daughter, another story unfolds in the crowd. A woman. Unnamed. Unnoticed. Twelve years of bleeding. Twelve years of suffering. Twelve years of disappointment. Twelve years of uncleanliness. She's spent everything she had—physically, financially, emotionally—and she's only gotten worse. By every account, she should have stayed home. She was considered physically and spiritually unclean. She wasn't supposed to be there. But faith doesn't wait for permission. She pushes through the crowd. Quietly. Carefully. She doesn't shout. She doesn't stop Jesus. She reaches out, thinking: “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” And in that moment—she is. The bleeding stops. The suffering ends. The healing begins. That's the power of quiet faith. It's not always loud or public. It doesn't always make headlines or draw attention. But it moves. It reaches. It touches Jesus. And Jesus responds. Sometimes, all you've got left—is a reach. But if you reach for the right One, that's all you'll ever need. What if the issue you're facing isn't about trying harder. But finally, reaching for Jesus? #FaithThatHeals, #TouchOfJesus, #Mark52529 ASK THIS: What have you been suffering with in silence? How have you reached for Jesus in your pain? What keeps you from pushing through the crowd today? Do you believe Jesus can respond to quiet faith? DO THIS: Push past the fear or shame today—pray boldly and reach out to Jesus with that one issue you've been hiding. PRAY THIS: Jesus, I come quietly but boldly, reaching for You with the pain I've carried far too long. Heal what doctors and efforts cannot—touch my life with Your power. Amen. PLAY THIS: “He Knows My Name” by Tasha Cobbs Leonard.
This Sunday we continue our sermon series on "Women Who Shaped Our Faith -- Six Powerful Gospel Stories." In this week's Gospel story, we'll encounter a woman who deliberately broke a sacred religious rule in the presence of Jesus. She did what was strictly forbidden. How would Jesus respond? And what can we learn from his example? This sermon is critical for everyone who wants to make the world a better place.

No community is immune from familial violence. But when an individual is intent on pleasing a high control group, one that introduces new pathways to failure and damnation, a mental pressure cooker of anxiety, fear, and anger can begin to build. And sometimes, if that person can't find a way to release that emotional steam valve, the subsequent explosion can bring about unspeakable tragedy.Get 50% off Magic Mind here with our link and code: https://magicmind.com/someplaceEDU & SOMEPLACE50Know of a missing woman's case that needs attention? This is the third in a series of episodes entitled The Unlovables. Today, we are going to study an uncomfortable group of people that Jesus was REALLY good at loving, but most of us aren't. The unseen and the unclean. From beggars to lepers to prostitutes and thieves – Jesus loved those on the edges. The people that for various reasons were culturally, financially, or morally outcasts. In Mark 7 Jesus and some religious leaders get into a conversation about how it's not about ritual or religious actions (or the lack of them) that make us clean or unclean, but rather sin from within makes us unclean. He was untouchable. Unclean. Unwelcome. But one act of bold faith—and one touch from Jesus—changed everything. In this episode, we unpack the powerful story of the leper in Matthew 8, a man who risked everything to reach out to Christ. What does this story teach us about Jesus, about ourselves, and about the gospel? Tune in to hear how Christ still reaches out to cleanse what the world calls hopeless.

Those suffering with leprosy in Bible times were expected to cry out “Unclean, unclean” (Lev. 13 v.45) so that people would know not to touch him or her for fear of contagion. Today's reading in Leviticus 15, might seem rather boring, but it has valuable lessons on cleanliness of which the world was ignorant until about 200 years ago.The word ‘Leprosy' in Leviticus covers a multitude of skin infections, some serious, some not. In the last 2 days we have seen that it was the Priest's responsibility to determine which was serious and see that action was taken. Today we read about the precautions with sick people and others who had bodily discharges so as to prevent the spread of dangerous infection. Those unclean with a “discharge” were not to touch anyone “without having rinsed their hands in water”. The person touched by someone unclean was also regarded as unclean until the evening and was required to “wash his clothes and bathe himself”[v.11] They also had to cleanse the drinking and other vessels they used.It is only a few generations since our world discovered how infections spread and the great importance of hygiene; before then countless deaths and plagues occurred. In the 19th Century a few medical men, suddenly realizing that the Bible had such laws given by God 4,000 years earlier became convinced it really was a divine revelation from God and became regarded the Bible was a Divinely inspired book and the doctors then started to cure more than they killed!..In today's 2nd Corinthians chapter 11 we see a spiritual counterpart! Paul laments that some were easily “led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.” He then writes, “if someone comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received, or if you accept a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it readily enough.” [v.3-5].Then he makes the point, “such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ.” [v.13]The tragedy today is that many accept an “unclean” gospel – but some, by God's grace, come to realize this and go through a cleansing process. We also read that if really bad behaviour is not cleansed, there is a parallel action to be taken to that of leprosy in dealing with it. See what Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 5 v.9-13, the faithful church cannot include those who are spiritually unclean.
You guys... this episode makes my heart feel like mush. Jesus is so so good. We're diving right into hard to read verses like Leviticus 15 that says women are unclean on their periods and need to be removed from the city for a period of time. Why? And where is God in all of that? Let's get into it.IG @holyandhormonalpodcast

Wednesday, 26 February 2025 And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.” Matthew 8:2 “And behold! A leper having come, he worshipped Him, saying, ‘Lord, if you desire, you can cleanse me.'” (CG). In the previous verse, Jesus came down from the mountain with great multitudes following him. Now, it says, “And behold! A leper.” It is a new word, lepros, a leper. It is derived from the same root as lepra, leprosy. That root is lepis, a scale, such as that seen in Acts 9:18. In turn, that comes from lepó, to peel. From this, one can see that the affliction is a scaly, peeling disease. A person with such an affliction was unclean according to the law. The requirements for such diseases are meticulously recorded in Leviticus 13. Of anyone with such an affliction, the law said – “Now the leper on whom the sore is, his clothes shall be torn and his head bare; and he shall cover his mustache, and cry, ‘Unclean! Unclean!' 46 He shall be unclean. All the days he has the sore he shall be unclean. He is unclean, and he shall dwell alone; his dwelling shall be outside the camp.” Leviticus 13:45, 46 Such a person, therefore, would be an outcast. There was to be no physical contact with him due to his state of uncleanness. However, this person, hearing about Jesus – probably from the crowds talking and considering Him the Messiah – believed he could be healed by Him. Therefore, it next says, “having come, he worshipped Him.” The word proskuneó is the same as that used when the Magi came to worship the Child in Matthew 2 and when the Traducer asked for worship in Matthew 4. It is variously translated as worship, bowed down, prostrated, etc. Such a gesture does not mean the man thought Jesus was God. It would be the same as coming before a high-ranking Roman authority, a king, etc. Each instance demands its own interpretation and the viewpoints on such things will vary based on the context, presuppositions, etc. In some instances later, it is obvious that Jesus is being worshipped with the same reverence as God. In this one, however, that fact was yet unknown to the people. But if He was thought to be the Messiah, He would be God's promised representative. If one were to understand the implication of the prophetic words, they would be able to deduce that this coming One was the God/Man, but there is no indication the people understood this – “‘Behold Me – Sending My messenger, And turned way to My faces And instantly comes unto His temple, The Lord, whom you seek, And Messenger the covenant, Whom you – delighted. Behold! Coming!' Said Yehovah Sabaoth.” Malachi 3:1 (CG) Regardless of the act, bowing for honor or worshiping as the Lord, the leper was “saying, ‘Lord, if you desire, you can cleanse me.'” The word translated as “Lord,” likewise has a variety of meanings based on the context. It can mean a superior of any kind or even a person who is greatly respected. It can also be applied to the Lord God. Again, regardless of what this person thought about Jesus' nature, he was convinced that He could perform this cleansing. The word is katharizó, to cleanse or purify. The man was unclean according to the law. His concern was to be cleansed. The cleansing, however, implies healing. One cannot be clean under the law unless he is healed of this type of affliction. The main concern here, however, is cleansing. Depending on one's state, he could be healed and yet still unclean for some other reason. What this person wants is to be fully cleansed. Thus, he would be healed and also acceptable to return to enjoy living among the people in that state. This is the first direct account of the healing of an individual by Jesus. In Matthew 4, it did say – “And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people. 24 Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them.” Matthew 4:23, 24 This person had probably heard of the healings previously conducted along with the words of the crowd as He passed through this city. In hearing these things, he had the faith to know he too could be cleansed by Jesus. Life application: The healings recorded in the gospels and Acts are there for the reason of proving Jesus is the Messiah. They are recorded at times as an indication of individual faith by those who were healed. They were recorded at times to demonstrate a lack of faith by those who should have possessed it, such as in Matthew 17:14-21. The purpose of these events has been met. Israel was given sufficient evidence that Jesus was the Messiah. Likewise, the authority of Jesus among the apostles and the early church stood as a witness to Israel that God's favor had moved from Israel to the church. Because those purposes have been met, there is no longer a need for miracle healing. Making claims on healing, as is so common in the church, demonstrates a misunderstanding of the purpose of Scripture and it demonstrates an arrogance in the one claiming such healing because the Bible does not align with the claims. At times, for example, Paul was able to simply heal at a command. However, he prayed for the healing of others many times. Sometimes, Paul was unable to heal others, and the person's affliction remained. This was true of Trophimus (2 Timothy 4:20) and Timothy (1 Timothy 5:23), among others. The Bible does not provide the authority for the church today to claim healing. We are to pray for healing and allow the Lord to determine if it will happen or not. Anything beyond that is presumptuous and inappropriate. Lord God, we are to live by faith. May our prayers for the healing of others be faithfully presented to You. May we never arrogantly demand from You, remembering that we may have afflictions that suit Your purposes. Lord, with the strength to praise You, even in times of affliction, may we be content. Amen.

My guest on the show today is with Devin LaSarre, Founder & Editor of Invariant. I've been following Devin for a while on social media, and invited him on to better understand his overall investing philosophy, and then specifically dig into an industry / idea a bit further. This episode I would say falls into the "ways of seeing" bucket, meaning, every once in a while I have a conversation on here with someone that has a completely different way they look at investing that I find very unique. In this case, Devin's focus on finding very "unclean" stories and doing the work to clean it up struck a chord that I wanted to understand further. I had a blast jamming on this concept, and then diving further on the Nicotine industry and his thesis on Haypp Group. And for full disclosure, we discussed a number of companies during today's podcast, I am not a shareholder in any of them. Today's Topics: 1, 2, 3, 4) Father Charles Murr joins Terry Gospel - Mark 5:1-20 - Jesus and his disciples came to the other side of the sea, to the territory of the Gerasenes. When He got out of the boat, at once a man from the tombs who had an unclean spirit met Him. The man had been dwelling among the tombs, and no one could restrain him any longer, even with a chain. In fact, he had frequently been bound with shackles and chains, but the chains had been pulled apart by him and the shackles smashed, and no one was strong enough to subdue him. Night and day among the tombs and on the hillsides he was always crying out and bruising himself with stones. Catching sight of Jesus from a distance, he ran up and prostrated himself before Him, crying out in a loud voice, “What have You to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure You by God, do not torment me!” (He had been saying to him, “Unclean spirit, come out of the man!”) He asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “Legion is my name. There are many of us.” And he pleaded earnestly with him not to drive them away from that territory. Now a large herd of swine was feeding there on the hillside. And they pleaded with Him, “Send us into the swine. Let us enter them.” And He let them, and the unclean spirits came out and entered the swine. The herd of about two thousand rushed down a steep bank into the sea, where they were drowned. The swineherds ran away and reported the incident in the town and throughout the countryside. And people came out to see what had happened. As they approached Jesus, they caught sight of the man who had been possessed by Legion, sitting there clothed and in his right mind. And they were seized with fear. Those who witnessed the incident explained to them what had happened to the possessed man and to the swine. Then they began to beg Him to leave their district. As He was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed pleaded to remain with Him. But Jesus would not permit him but told him instead, “Go home to your family and announce to them all that the Lord in His pity has done for you.” Then the man went off and began to proclaim in the Decapolis what Jesus had done for him; and all were amazed. Pastoral Reflections Finding God In Ourselves by Msgr. Don Fischer
Gospel Mark 5:1-20 Jesus and his disciples came to the other side of the sea, to the territory of the Gerasenes. Reflection The most fascinating thing about this passage is the dialog between Evil, Legion and Jesus Divinity incarnate. What you see is a subtle thing. It is the fact that this man who is filled with the Legion's power is being tormented and he's no longer able even to be contained because of his violence. And yet we see in Jesus not a desire to destroy or be violent against evil, because the image of Legion bowing before Jesus, says please don't torment me. And Jesus, in a sense, is not interested in tormenting evil. He's interested in giving people the hope and the promise that he will keep them free of evil. He's not a destructive God. He's a healing, transforming God. Closing Prayer Father, we are shown in this passage a way of dealing with evil that is manifested in people around us. It is not that we need to destroy the person, but we need to pray to free them from the power of evil. Jesus knows that evil is part of our story. We're going to be dealing with it over and over again. But we cannot become like evil and want to destroy. And we ask this in Jesus' name, Amen. Learn more about your ad choices. I adjure you by God, do not torment me!” (He had been saying to him, “Unclean spirit, come out of the man!”) He asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “Legion is my name. There are many of us.” Mark 5:7–9To most people, such an encounter would be terrifying. This man whose words are recorded above was possessed by a multitude of demons. He lived on the hillsides among various caves by the sea, and no one wanted to go near him. He was a violent man, crying out day and night, and all the townspeople were fearful of him. But when this man saw Jesus at a distance, something amazing happened. Instead of Jesus being terrified of the man, the multitude of demons possessing the man became terrified of Jesus. Jesus then commanded the many demons to leave the man and enter a herd of about two thousand swine instead. The swine immediately ran down the hill into the sea and drowned. The possessed man returned to normal, becoming clothed and in his right mind. All who saw him were amazed.Clearly, this brief summary of the story does not adequately explain the terror, trauma, confusion, suffering, etc., that this man endured during the years of his diabolical possession. And it does not adequately explain the grave suffering of this man's family and friends, as well as the disorder caused to the local townspeople as a result of his possession. Thus, to better understand this story, it is useful to contrast the before-and-after experience of all involved. It was very difficult for everyone to comprehend how this man could go from being possessed and out of his mind to calm and rational. For that reason, Jesus told the man to “Go home to your family and announce to them all that the Lord in his pity has done for you.” Imagine the mix of joy, confusion and disbelief that his family would have experienced. If Jesus could transform the life of this man who was completely possessed by a Legion of demons, then no one is ever without hope. Too often, especially within our families and among old friends, there are those whom we have written off as irredeemable. There are those who have gone so far astray that they seem hopeless. But one thing this story tells us is that hope is never lost for anyone—not even those completely possessed by a multitude of demons.Reflect, today, upon anyone in your life whom you have written off. Perhaps they have hurt you over and over. Or perhaps they have chosen a life of grave sin. Look at that person in the light of this Gospel and know that there is always hope. Be open to God acting through you in a profound and powerful way so that even the most seemingly irredeemable person you know will be given hope through you.My most powerful Lord, I offer to You, this day, the person whom I call to mind who is most in need of Your redeeming grace. May I never lose hope in Your ability to transform their life, to forgive their sins and to bring them back to You. Use me, dear Lord, to be an instrument of Your mercy, so that they will come to know You and experience the freedom You so deeply desire that they receive. Jesus, I trust in You.Source of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2025 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved.
