Cyrano starring Peter Dinklage is finally hitting theaters! We sat down with director Joe Wright last fall to discuss the making of the movie, working with actors, our love Atonement, and that iconic one-er at Dunkirk and more. Also this week, we dive into the controversy surrounding the Oscars choosing to prerecord and cut down 8 categories for this year's Academy Awards ceremony rather than present them live. The Critics' Choice Super Awards might be the populist film problem with most awards shows, and we discuss the recent nominations. Director Joe Wright discusses his new film, Cyrano, with fellow director Sam Taylor-Johnson in a Q&A at the DGA theater in Los Angeles. Based on the play by Edmond Rostand, the film adds singing to the story of Cyrano de Bergerac, who can dazzle with a word or a sword but, convinced that his appearance makes such a romance impossible, cannot declare his love for his beautiful friend Roxanne. Please note: spoilers are included. See photos and a summary of this event below: https://www.dga.org/Events/2022/February2022/Cyrano_QnA_1221.aspx

Director Joe Wright and his sound supervisor Craig Berkey talk about using sound design to build worlds as diverse as Churchill’s World War II London in Darkest Hour, the synesthezia of a homeless schizophrenic in The Soloist, or a fantastic Neverland in Pan. Wright and Berkey explore why recording Foley in the real Churchill war rooms was important, how working in the London rave scene after college influenced Wright’s use of sound, and why having the score to play for the actors on set is important. In this series of six episodes, we focus on the long-time collaboration of some of the leading directors and their sound supervisors working today. These remarkable directors talk about the importance of sound to the films, and how they work with sound design and music.
Director Joe Wright discusses his new film, Darkest Hour, with fellow Director Matt Reeves. Hi everyone, here's a new episode of Over/Under Movies, and we wanted to remind everyone to please write us a review on iTunes (You can find us if you search for Over/Under Movies) if you enjoy our show so we can get more people like you to listen to us complain about or praise overrated and underrated movies. In this episode, Ryan, Erik, and Oktay discover their badass feminine sides as they dive headfirst into two action flicks about ladies who are well-versed in the delicate art of killing a whole heap of men (And Cate Blanchett). Ryan's picks for this episode starts with Lucy, a pseudo-sci-fi actioner about a woman (Scarlet Johansson) who ingests a deadly chemical that allows her to use 100% of her brain, which turns her into Mystique from The X-Men for some reason. Is Luc Besson's new age wankfest a worthy addition to 2014's "Scarlett Johansson sci-fi trilogy" along with Her and Under The Skin, or did LB go too far up his own ass this time? Next, we have Hanna, an unexpectedly effective smart action flick about a teenage assassin (Saoirse Ronan) on the run from the big bad government. Director Joe Wright delivered this overlooked gem in the middle of his distinguished career as a peddler of Oscar-bait dramas. Also, Keira Knightley's not in this one, which is a big plus. As usual, thank you for listening, please write us your comments and iTunes reviews so we can improve the show, and look forward to new episodes when our killer Pacific Northwest-based film critics will discuss one overrated and one underrated film that share the same genre, style, or plot. You can find us on iTunes if you search for Over/Under Movies and on Twitter @overundermovies. Erik McClanahan is the lead film critic at Oregon Arts Watch, co-host of the Adjust Your Tracking podcast (Also available on iTunes) and a contributor at The Playlist. Ryan Oliver is a contributor at Gotchamovies.com. He writes reviews and articles for them, and co-hosts their Unspooled Reel podcast. Oktay Ege Kozak is a film critic for The Oregon Herald, Beyazperde, DVD Talk and is also a contributor and film critic at The Playlist.
With Mark Lawson. Director Joe Wright, whose film credits include Atonement and Anna Karenina, makes his stage debut with a new production of Pinero's Trelawny of the Wells. Described as Pinero's love letter to theatre, the play pokes fun at the cliches associated with life on the stage. Writer and comedian Viv Groskop gives her verdict. Broadchurch and Mayday are two new TV thriller series starting next week. In Broadchurch, David Tennant and Olivia Colman star as detectives in a small coastal town trying to understand what lay behind the death of a young boy whose body was found at the foot of a cliff. Mayday has a similar theme, as a small community tries to find out what happened to a 14 year old who vanished without trace. Crime writer Dreda Say Mitchell and crime fiction specialist Jeff Park review the two series. Veteran American short story writer Edith Pearlman has received great acclaim for her new collection, Binocular Vision. The stories span 40 years of writing, with settings including tsarist Russia and London during the Blitz. Edith Pearlman discusses the appeal of the short form. As Pope Benedict XVI enjoys his last full day in office before retiring on Thursday, writer Peter Stanford considers the papacy in fiction from Morris West's bestseller The Shoes Of The Fisherman to the bio-pics of the short life of Pope Joan. Producer Ellie Bury.
Director Joe Wright has adapted another 19th century novel, and this time all the rich, pretty people struggling with matters of the heart are in Russia! That’s right, it’s the latest film adaptation of the classic novel by Tolstoy, Anna Karenina. Keira Knightley, Jude Law and Aaron Taylor-Johnson star in this tale of forbidden love and class differences. Is it full of life and passion, or dull and monotonous? Tune in to find out.
