Magique. Mystique. This week we made our way through twenty rolls of ‘Word a Day' toilet paper – not (entirely) because of tummy trouble, but in order to impress one of the world's greatest wielders of words, copywriting legend Tim Delaney. An advertiser who made all of advertising try harder with their adverts, Tim is of course the founder of the famous Leagas Delaney agency as well as being one of the all-time great copywriters.  You'll no doubt have spent much time gawping at and/or weeping over some of his most iconic work – including some extraordinary campaigns for Harrods, Adidas and Nationwide. He's also the creative brain behind the unforgettable ‘Perfect Day' film for the BBC – giving the world the briefest sniff of what a Bowie/Boyzone collaboration might have been. Wildly successful in both the building of an agency and the writing of copy, Tim is also one of advertising's most compelling talkers of sense – with a philosophy built around strategic thinking, disciplined work and a healthy appreciation for the value of intuition. In a chat where we skid quickly and wildly away from what we laughably called ‘the agenda', Tim takes us on an entertaining and eye-opening journey through one of the most remarkable lives in the creativity game.   This episode is proudly dedicated to Tom Harrington. "You took away everything I had. Everything I ever was!"   After an explosive mid-season 2-parter, X-Position returns with a pair of stand-alone episodes picking right back up with the familiar character-focused format. And while another three episodes remain, these installments will actually round out the character spotlights that have come to define the show's second season. "A Rogue's Tale" functions as something of an origin for its titular character, as ghosts of the past come back to inform events in the present. It's a crunchy, lore-heavy episode no doubt satisfying for longtime X-Men fans, featuring a deep dive into Rogue's tortured past, tutelage under Mystique, and a prominent role for Ms. Marvel all reframed to fit the context of this animated universe. It smartly puts Professor Xavier's disappearance to use as a plot point, making clear that the central conflict is only made possible by his absence. Less satisfying is its conclusion, which essentially confines an innocent woman to solitary confinement and calls it a day. While far from being presented as a happy ending, it's unclear where the show ultimately lands on the existential question of how Carol Danvers' disembodied consciousness should be regarded - resulting in some muddled messaging ethically.   On the other side of the coin, "Beauty and the Beast" takes a closer look at Dr. Henry McCoy's interior life, a topic that is naturally of heightened interest given how little time viewers have spent with him relative to other characters. Aside from a quick scene of Hank reminiscing over some family photos, this episode is differentiated from the season's other character studies in that it is largely unconcerned with mining its protagonist's past. The approach makes sense given Beast's relatively stable upbringing. Despite his "heteromorphic" appearance, Beast has largely been presented as the character most at ease with his mutation and public image - whether as a mutant, accomplished scientist, or pardoned felon. Hitting Hank where it hurts the most means discrediting his accolades and good nature - and most pointedly, dashing a promise of love that he has long denied himself - solely on the basis of him being a highly visible mutant. All put to great effect by the militant anti-mutant Graydon Creed. It gives Beast the rare opportunity to cut lose while Wolverine employs the art of subterfuge in a satisfying role reversal, capped off with Creed's ironic comeuppance.   X-TRA: Another version of these episodes might have seen their otherwise disparate plots woven together by way of a common element: none of other than Mystique. While Rogue's upbringing by Mystique is the driving force in "A Rogue's Tale," we also have one side of Graydon Creed's parentage revealed in "Beauty and the Beast." Sabretooth is confirmed to be Creed's father, but his mother in fact being Mystique remains a mystery for another day. Despite this familial connection, the latter is actually the only episode of the season in which Rogue does not appear.

Matt Swaim and Anna Mitchell interview Roxane Salonen on her book, co-authored with Christina Brajkovich and Karen Anne Mahoney, entitled Finding Flannery: A Travel Memoir Exploring the Mystique of Flannery O'Connor and the Legacy She Has Left Us All. (November 18, 2025)Follow the journey… During the fiftieth anniversary year of the death of Flannery O'Connor, three writers from the North embarked on a pilgrimage to Milledgeville, Georgia, to uncover the mystique of their heroine, whose stories have left as many shocked as in stitches. What formed this famed literary artist, who, though her life was cut short by lupus, became one of America's most celebrated fiction writers, and whose stories of grace, sin, and redemption–with their misfit characters and grotesque violence–still point us to the light of truth? Get ready to be transported into the Deep South, where the world is best taken in from a front-porch rocking chair amid peaches and magnolias, and where Flannery penned her best works in the shadow of a dairy farm. Along the way of this vivid travelogue, you'll peer into the places that educated and shaped Flannery's imagination and fed her devout Catholic soul.Finding Flannery: A Travel Memoir Exploring the Mystique of Flannery O'Connor and the Legacy She Has Left Us All, authored by Christina Brajkovich, Karen Anne Mahoney, and Roxane B. ShownotesSome of the most prolific writers often wrote based off of their own personal experiences and turned them into brilliant literary works. For author Flannery O'Connor, this proved true but not in such an obvious way. She experienced a great amount of grief throughout her life that fueled her in a way that ended up shaping and solidifying her faith, to the degree that she would not have made such an impact on the literary world and beyond if not for these crosses. But what exactly can we learn from her in terms of handling our own grief? How can we use her life as inspiration for our own lives to “live like you're dying”?In this week's episode, Andrea and Jennifer explore the life of Flannery O'Connor with Roxane Salonen, one of the authors of the new book, Finding Flannery: the Mystique of Flannery O'Connor and the Legacy She has Left Us All, authored by Christina Brajkovich, Karen Anne Mahoney, and Roxane B. Salonen  Our GuestRoxane B. Salonen lives in Fargo, North Dakota and has been crafting stories as a journalist and author for decades, including the award-winning "What Would Monica Do?" (Ascension Press, 2022), and more recently, the co-authored "Finding Flannery" (En Route Books & Media, 2025). Whether through podcast interviews or newspaper articles, Roxane finds Flannery's love for the truth and Catholic convictions inspiring as she seeks to report on truth today.Scripture"Jesus wept." Fascinating but Flawed (01:31 - 11:12) X-Men Dark Phoenix is viewed as 'fascinating but flawed,' with a promising roster and good beginning but faltering in villain construction and emotional depth. Strong Performances (20:59 - 30:59) The original cast and comic accuracy provide strong foundations, especially the performances of Fassbender's Magneto and McAvoy's Xavier. Critique of Alien Subplot (41:11 - 50:27) The alien d'Bari subplot is criticized as confusing and unengaging, detracting from the core mutant stories. ⏳ Timeline and Relationship Issues (50:27 - 01:00:35) Timeline and character relationship development, particularly Jean Grey's 10-year arc with Cyclops, lack coherence and emotional impact. Mystique's Death Impact (01:00:35 - 01:11:32) Mystique's death and screen presence suffer due to offscreen issues, weakening potential emotional payoff. Pitches for Improvement (01:22:43 - 02:04:42) Pitches emphasize removing alien plotlines, deepening mutant character interactions, and making Charles Xavier a complex antagonist with a redemption arc. Need for Better Pacing (01:59:57 - 02:06:15) Consensus that better pacing, emotional beats, and clearer motivations would strengthen the film's impact. ️ Chemistry Recognition (20:59 - 30:59) Recognition of Sophie Turner and Ty Sheridan's chemistry despite limited script support. School Renaming Suggestion (01:54:56 - 02:04:42) Recommendation to rename the school to honor Raven (Mystique) rather than Jean Grey due to emotional significance. ️ Podcast Engagement (02:04:42 - 02:06:15) Acknowledgement of the podcast as a space for deep media discussion and fan engagement.

Frank and Jonathan catch up after a busy con season and dig into the biggest geek stories they've missed. We react to the Mandalorian & Grogu trailer and its old-school adventure vibe, talk through why a Game of Thrones one-two punch in 2026 could work (and where House of the Dragon still needs to land), and break down the first real look at the Wolverine game from Insomniac. We also map out what the Peaky Blinders movie and sequel series might cover, debate the point of The Simpsons Movie 2, and line up a sharp October watchlist. Plus: Jordan Peele's Him hits digital with bonus content, and we're giving away copies today. Timestamps & Topics 00:00–02:24 • Catch-up and con season recap (Crocker Con, LA Comic Con, highlight video) 02:24–11:08 • Mandalorian & Grogu poster + trailer reactions, practical effects, scale, IMAX plans 11:08–19:12 • Game of Thrones 2026: House of the Dragon S3 expectations, big battles, “movie-episode” idea; A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms tone and Dorne 19:12–23:21 • The Simpsons Movie 2: why now, scope, and what would make it worth theaters 23:21–29:19 • Wolverine (Insomniac) gameplay: combat feel, Omega Red stakes, Mystique story tricks, scent-tracking 29:19–39:51 • Peaky Blinders: WWII film setup, Tommy vs. fascism, the 1953 sequel series and what shifts after the war 39:51–40:23 • What we're rewatching: Invincible 40:23–40:51 • Ad: Jordan Peele's Him now on digital + bonus content 40:49–40:51 • Giveaway: Free copies of Him dropping on our socials today 40:51–48:14 • October Watchlist: Solar Opposites, Hazbin Hotel, Star Wars: Visions, It: Welcome to Derry, The Witcher's final season 48:14–52:18 • Horror picks, Tron rewatch plans, final recs (Reading Rainbow with Mychol the Librarian) Key Takeaways Mandalorian & Grogu looks like classic adventure cinema with modern polish, and the scale finally feels “Star Wars movie” again. House of the Dragon S3 needs payoff right away; A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms works best if it stays grounded and character-driven. Wolverine aims for weighty, tactile combat; villains like Omega Red can raise stakes by limiting healing. Peaky Blinders is set up for a strong WWII film handoff to a 1953 sequel series that explores post-war power shifts. The Simpsons Movie 2 needs a big, timely hook to justify the leap back to theaters. October TV is stacked, and It: Welcome to Derry has room to dig into the town-wide effects of Pennywise. Memorable Quotes “There's something about a Star Wars movie where the budget is just whatever they wanted to do.” “Make the season climb, then drop a theater-only battle movie the very next weekend.” “Star Wars tech feels bolted together in the best way. You can almost hear the click of every panel.” “He operates perfectly in the gray area where politics can't see.” “The best horror makes you think about it long after the scare.” Call to Action If you enjoyed this episode, follow and subscribe, rate us 5 stars, and share the show with a friend.
