In part two of our interview Arno Michaelis, we navigate the bizarre intersection of music, ideology, and redemption. If you've ever wondered how extremist movements actually work, this offers some great insight. Arno gives us the inside scoop on how a skinhead band like Centurion shifted 20,000 records whilst still getting royally ripped off by their label boss. We also chat about right wing ideology and symbolism, as Arno discusses how antisemitism serves as what "the connective tissue" that binds seemingly opposing extremist groups together. We delve into the psychological mechanics too. Taking in everything from Norse fantasy to Tolkien, as well as the very large psychological leaps bands like Skrewdriver had to take to justify playing rock n roll music and Jewish cabaret tunes. Arno also talks about how the music of the Beastie Boys was something of a saving grace as he exited the movement, and he tells us about how a MySpace message in the early 00s regarding his former band, Centurion, led him to reckon with the legacy of poison he created. Whilst also giving him the impetus to try to be a force for good in the world. Grab a cuppa and dive in. My guest on the show today is Jon Baskin, co-founder and editor of The Pointmagazine, which over the last 16 years has managed to carve out for itself a really distinctive and important space within the broader American literary intellectual scene. Jon and I have traded emails over the years, but like a lot of people who I think of as loose comrades within the broader scene, we had never actually gazed on each other's faces or heard each other's voices before we got on Zoom to do this. So it was nice to connect. We talk a lot about the birth and development of The Point, in particular its origins in the Committee on Social Thought program at the University of Chicago. We talk about its relationship to N+1 , which is in many ways the seminal magazine of the last few decades of political intellectual life on the left in America. We get into how Jon and his co-editors have managed to keep their bearings while so many other publications have been whipsawed and in some cases destroyed by the violent political energies of the past decade. And we talk about how The Point does and doesn't intersect with the emerging media landscape. This is a really fun conversation with Jon. Hope you enjoy.AI Show notes courtesy of Descript:00:00 Introduction to Eminent Americans00:17 Meet John Baskin: Co-founder of The Point Magazine01:28 The Birth and Evolution of The Point Magazine02:21 Upcoming Conversations and Projects04:38 John Baskin's Intellectual Journey05:45 The Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago11:49 Influences and Inspirations Behind The Point23:28 The Role of Philosophy in The Point's Editorial Vision36:30 Challenges and Conflicts in Editorial Direction43:00 The Convergence of Magazines in the Late 2000s44:43 The Role of DNA in Magazine Identity45:28 Challenges in Finding Writers47:06 Impact of Substack on Traditional Magazines49:50 Balancing Established and New Writers57:31 Exploring the Political Spectrum of The Point01:03:32 The Relationship Between Political and Cultural Conservatism01:08:22 The Point's Foray into Substack01:17:39 The Mystique of The Point and Its Editors01:19:48 Conclusion and Final Thoughts Get full access to Eminent Americans at danieloppenheimer.substack.com/subscribe

On this week's edition of Political Breakfast, the dust has settled from Sine Die: the end of the 2025 Legislative Session. Republican strategist Brian Robinson, the Atlanta Civic Circle's Saba Long and host Lisa Rayam are now eyeing future candidates from Georgia, including in the race for Governor and U.S. Senate in 2026. Will Governor Brian Kemp finally throw his hat in the ring against Democratic incumbent, U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff? Will Stacey Abrams once again emerge? Plus, Georgia GOP Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene and other Republicans are being accused of insider trading. Greene bought thousands of dollars in stock during Trump's tariff pause. He's The Scientific Angler on YouTube whose videos of Corrib, Arrow and Sheelin show brown trout fishing in Ireland at its best, but what's also great about Ronan McWilliams' fly fishing videos is his honesty. He's not afraid to say when he's blanked and when he's found it tough – authenticity as he says is what it's all about. Ronan also tells us about the mystique of the Blue Stacks in Donegal and why he loves nothing better than getting away from it all fishing on remote hill loughs. Episode 10 – Mystique and Vulnerability____________________________________________________Cultivating a quality of vulnerability is vital for men seeking fulfilling experiences with women. “But surely I can't look weak in her eyes”, some men will say–“she won't want to be around me”. They posture. Others, seeking a deep, heart-to-heart connection, venture into heavy territory too quickly and women get overwhelmed. Men often miss the mark. So what does the kind of vulnerability that attracts actually look like? It's light, it's inspiring, it's true, and Jordan and Zan break it down in today's episode. If you ‘speak your truth' with women but find that you're creating distance more than you are a sense of relatedness and comfort with her, then this conversation is a must-watch for you.Let us know what you think about today's discussion in the comments section. ____________________________________________________Come join us! Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. On this week's episode we are joined by the incredibly charming and kind cosplayer Kissi Frost to cover the PHALANX. We're getting techno-organic y'all! First off, Uncanny X-Men 312 (their birth month and year issue) is entitled ROMP and the Phalanx are not a romp but we have a great time with it. In this episode: if you're gonna date an X-Man you have to accept polyamory to a certain degree Lodro thought ninja sais would be more readily available as an adult (again) it's hard to understand comic injuries...but rain clouds make them prettier the Phalanx are truly scary as a villain Gambit loves to throw motorcycles at people an impassioned defense of the X-Men: Apocalypse movie Magneto has a good cape What does any of this mean for Kissi's future? Tune in to find out! Kissi Frost is an artist, actor, and a lifelong nerd. Having cosplayed since they were fourteen years old, and using Spiderman comics to help practice their English, they've been a comic fanatic for as long as they can remember. Currently, they work as a freelance concept artist, as well as an actor (mainly in the horror scene.) Their favorite comics and cosplays are, of course, the X-Men, with Mystique being their favorite character to portray. They only throw blue babies over waterfalls on weekends, pinky promise. More of Lodro Rinzler's work can be found here and here and you can follow the podcast on Instagram at xmenpanelsdaily where we post X-Men comic panels...daily. In this episode of High Theory, Nina Studer tells us about alcohol. The restrictions and prohibitions, medical and moral discourses surrounding alcohol reveal a great deal about a given society in a particular historical moment. Nina uses alcohol as a lens to analyze the history of French colonization in North Africa. Who consumed alcohol, in what places, how much, and what kinds, what was viewed as healthy and what was viewed as dangerous, even criminal, can help us approach larger questions of gender, class, and nation. If you want to learn more, check out her new book, Hour of Absinthe: A Cultural History of France's Most Notorious Drink (McGill-Queens University Press, 2024). The book explores how the mythologizing of one distilled alcohol led to the creation and fabrication of a vast modern folklore. Mystique and moralizing both arose from the spirit's relationship with empire. Some claim that French soldiers were given daily absinthe rations during France's military conquest of Algeria to protect them against heat, diseases, and contaminated water. In fact, the overenthusiastic adoption of the drink by these soldiers, and subsequently by French settlers, was perceived as a threat to France's colonial ambitions - an anxiety that migrated into French medicine. At the height of its popularity in the late nineteenth century, absinthe reigned in the bars, cafés, and restaurants of France and its colonial empire. Yet by the time it was banned in 1915, the famous green fairy had become the green peril, feared for its connection with declining birth rates and its apparent capacity to induce degeneration, madness, and murderous rage in its consumers. Dr. Nina Studer is a historian working on the 19th and 20th century history of French colonies in North Africa and the Middle East. Her work focuses on the history of drinks, in particular tea, coffee, Fanta/Coca-Cola, Orangina, wine and absinthe. Her doctorate, published as The Hidden Patients: North African Women in French Colonial Psychiatry (Böhlau, 2015) is available via Open Access. Currently she works as an associate researcher at the Institut Éthique Histoire Humanités at the University of Geneva, part of Dr. Francesca Arena's team looking into the medical history of wet dreams between the 18th and the 20th century. The SNSF-project has the title: “Nuits polluantes: masculinité et médecine en Suisse et en France (XVIII – XX siècles)”.
