This is a Vintage episode from 2006.You're hearing a preview of this subscriber bonus episode. Restaurant Guys' Regulars can hear the full episode, plus other commercial-free bonus episodes, at restaurantguysregulars.buzzsprout.com .Why This Episode MattersWhy one of the world's most prized ingredients commands extraordinary prices. How truffle cultivation began challenging the romantic image of hunters searching the woods with trained dogs. Why aroma, scarcity and spectacle are as important to the allure of truffles as flavor. What happens when restaurants get their hands on thousands of dollars' worth of an ingredient that doesn't stay fresh for long.BanterMark Pascal and Francis Schott begin with a tale of New Jersey lobster justice that makes Maine's system of informal fishing rules look positively genteel. A territorial dispute involving lobster pots somehow progresses to gunfire, arson and a neighboring boat unfortunately parked in the wrong slip. Then, reports of people eating, and even cooking and driving, while asleep lead Mark to identify the true indignity: consuming thousands of calories without even getting to remember the meal. The ConversationFood writer Jane Black joins Mark and Francis after traveling through Spain to report on the changing world of truffles. The romantic picture is familiar: a hunter and his dog wandering through the woods in search of an elusive underground treasure. What Jane found instead were truffle orchards, inoculated trees and farmers trying to turn an unpredictable delicacy into a viable agricultural business. They explore why truffles became so scarce and expensive, how a former peasant food became one of dining's ultimate luxury ingredients, and why their remarkable aroma may matter more than their actual taste. Jane and the Guys also get into the sensual reputation of truffles, the theater of shaving them tableside and the questionable proliferation of truffle oil. Then come the cautionary tales: an enormously valuable white truffle purchased at a charity auction that was locked in a safe and allowed to rot, and Francis's considerably more personal horror story about a chef who received thousands of dollars' worth of beautiful fresh truffles—and immediately preserved them in oil.2026 update: At the time of this conversation, successful cultivation of the prized Italian white truffle (Tuber magnatum) remained elusive. Researchers have since documented controlled production of the species in a French orchard.Guest BioJane Black is a food journalist who covers food, culture, politics and sustainability. At the time of this interview, she was food editor at Boston Magazine and had written for publications including The New York Times, The Washington Post, BusinessWeek and Newsweek International. She later became a staff writer at The Washington Post and co-host of the James Beard Award-winning podcast Pressure Cooker.Timestamps0:00 New Jersey vigilante lobster justice4:35 Sleep eating, Ambien and forgotten calories7:20 Jane Black enters the changing world of truffles12:00 How truffles went from peasant food to luxury15:00 Why truffles smell like sex—and why aroma matters22:20 The $35,000 truffle disaster, Francis's truffle tragedy and the future of cultivationInfoJane's article on truffles“Cultivating a Mystique,” The New York Times (2006) Our PlacesStage Left Steakhttps://www.stageleft.com/Catherine Lombardi Restauranthttps://www.catherinelombardi.com/Stage Left Wineshophttps://www.stageleftwineshop.com/Reach Out to The Guys!TheGuys@restaurantguyspodcast.com

# X-Men '97 Season 2 ReviewRC the Commission and co-host Sam Howe break down the highs and lows of X-Men '97 Season 2, from the show's crowded storytelling and uneven pacing to the emotional fallout around Magneto, Gambit, Rogue, and Wolverine. They also look ahead to Season 3, including where the series might go with Graydon Creed, Onslaught, Krakoa, and a more politically charged mutant conflict.## Key topics- In this episode, RC the Commission and Sam Howe give their overall Season 2 score and both settle on a mixed response, with Sam landing at a 6 out of 10.- They argue that the season felt wildly uneven, especially after the Wolverine standalone episode, which Sam calls the standout of the season.- They discuss how the season seemed to suffer from rewrites after Bo DeMeo's exit, including the possibility that an originally planned 10 episode season was cut down.- They compare Season 2 to Season 1, saying the first season worked better because it had decades of X-Men history to build on, while Season 2 had to build mostly from scratch.- They criticize the back half of the season for feeling overloaded, with too many characters and arcs competing for space, including Polaris, Danger, Gambit, Rogue, Storm, Weapon X, and X-Factor.- They talk about how the season often used characters as plot pieces rather than giving them meaningful development, especially Rogue, Storm, Mystique, and Graydon Creed.- They break down the Gambit storyline and say his return, sacrifice, and emotional payoff felt muddled despite the character's importance.- They praise Nightcrawler's trial scene with Graydon Creed as one of the best character moments of the season, especially for how it handled forgiveness and self hatred.- They say the show lost some of its political edge in the second half, with Graydon Creed's rise to power feeling rushed and underexplained.- They look ahead to Season 3 and expect the series to move toward a stronger mutant versus government conflict, possibly involving Krakoa, Onslaught, and a more adversarial Xavier and Cyclops dynamic.## Timestamps00:00 - Opening the Season 2 review and setting expectations 00:43 - First impressions and overall score 01:57 - Why Season 2 felt more crowded than Season 1 04:08 - Original plans for Onslaught, Polaris, and the Age of Apocalypse 06:05 - Rogue, Storm, and the emotional weight problem 07:31 - Why the Wolverine episode worked and where it fell short 09:24 - Death, resurrection, and why consequences felt cheap 11:31 - Story prioritization over character development 13:13 - The abandoned Onslaught setup and rewritten back half 16:35 - Xavier and Magneto as emotional subtext 18:35 - The season's weakened political viewpoint 20:55 - Graydon Creed, Val Cooper, and rushed government plotting 24:06 - Nightcrawler's standout trial scene 25:42 - Why Danger EXE was the weakest episode 27:48 - Too many new characters, too little time at the school 29:24 - Why Season 1 felt more specific and satisfying 31:18 - Where Season 3 could go from here 34:15 - Xavier and Cyclops as morally gray leaders 39:29 - Thoughts on casting and the MCU's mutant setup 41:34 - How Spider-Man: Brand New Day overstuffed its story 43:14 - Early casting reactions, including Adam Driver as Mr. Sinister 45:36 - Krakoa, Genosha, and the next mutant status quo 47:02 - Favorite part of the season: returning to the X-Men world 49:47 - Worst part of the season: lack of direction and consequence 51:17 - Why Gambit's arc was the biggest disappointment 52:44 - Favorite late-season moment: Xavier's attack on Apocalypse 53:47 - Why Season 3 needs to arrive faster and do more 55:07 - Closing thoughts and Patreon shoutout## Notable quotes> “It is a wildly uneven season.”> “The best writing is so specific that it becomes universal.”> “I need to go back and watch anything from my childhood.”
Join us as Lt. Gen. William J. Bowers, Deputy Commandant for Manpower and Reserve Affairs, steps into the Trident Room to discuss what makes the Marine Corps more than just military service — it's a calling. From the "Marine mystique" that first inspired him as a student to the leaders who shaped his journey, Bowers reflects on the power of purpose, the importance of mentorship, and why every Marine's story matters. The conversation also explores why education remains a strategic advantage for tomorrow's leaders, how young officers can prepare for increasingly complex challenges, and why curiosity, collaboration, and lifelong learning are just as essential as physical toughness. Equal parts leadership lesson and personal reflection—with a few stories about Social Distortion, surfing, and Marine Corps culture woven throughout—this first installment offers an engaging look at the people, purpose, and traditions that continue to define the Corps.

Welcome to Multiverse News, your source for information about all your favorite fictional universes.Tom Holland's fourth outing as Peter Parker/Spider-Man opened to a massively successful box office, shattering the domestic opening record previously held by Avengers: Endgame, and raking in nearly $1 billion globally in its first weekend alone - so while it beat Endgame's North American opening take, it comes in just behind it globally. Not a bad start for Disney and Marvel Studios as the conversation around superhero movies ebbs and flows in the zeitgeist. Those numbers exclude the premium IMAX format, as Spidey couldn't web up those screens due to The Odyssey still holding all IMAX screens. While Marvel is on their Spidey high, other headlines have circled the news this week - some good and some disappointing. On a positive note - Samara Weaving has reportedly been cast as Emma Frost. Horror fans will recognize Weaving from the Ready or Not films. Obsession breakout star Inde Navarette confirmed her meeting with Jake Schreier and she mentioned interest in playing Mystique. And for the bad news, Wonder Man will not get a season two after all - even though it was confirmed earlier this year - and both Kevin Feige and Maershala Ali expressed regret about the Blade film; with Feige admitting he feels like a failure for not getting it off the ground and Ali saying he's done with the project. Last week, DC Studios and HBO's Booster Gold series writer David Jenkins said that the project is no longer moving forward. Shortly after he made this statement, IGN reported that the series will, in fact, be moving forward, but with a new creative team. The New York Times reported that Barbie 2 is currently stalled, with Warner Bros. struggling to come to terms with lead talent Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, and Ryan Gosling. The studio has until December to reach a deal before the right revert back to Mattel. Stephen King's 1996 novel Desperation is getting a film adaptation from Final Destination: Bloodlines directing duo Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein. Sam Raimi will also produce the feature, his first time working with King. Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for Jumanji: Open World, which opens in theaters on December 25. The film returns franchise stars Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Karen Gillan. Amazon MGM Studios is developing a Warhammer 40k animated event series alongside the upcoming live-action version, sources close to the project confirmed to Deadline. Additionally, Henry Cavill, who is set to star, is also on board to be an executive producer.Dave Bautista is in talks to take on the lead role of Kratos in Prime Video's God of War series, replacing Ryan Hurst, who had to drop out of production after he sustained an on set stunt injury. Mary Holland, Star of Ghosts and The Little House on the Prairie, has been cast in a lead role as Sandra in the upcoming DC Studios and HBO Max Superman spin off series that centers on Jimmy Olsen. In a recent interview with Inverse, Jessica Henwick revealed that she declined an offer to reprise her role as Colleen Wing in Daredevil: Born Again season three because she wants to protect the character's perfect ending in Netflix's Iron Fist.
A super-sized episode. After years of putting off, the Siblings finally re-watch the original X-Men live action film. Comic-Con apenas terminó, pero Spidey y las noticias geek siguen siendo nuestra fiesta oficial.
Meanwhile EMMA FROST in X-MEN has been cast & Obsession star Inde Navarrette met with X-Men director Jake Schreier, revealing that she would love to play Mystique. Mahershala Ali says Marvel Studios' Blade movie is no longer happening and that he has officially moved on from the role. Greg Alba and Coy Jandreau discuss Ali's blunt response to Marvel, what went wrong with Blade, Wonder Man Season 2 being canceled despite Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's Emmy nomination, and David Jenkins' Booster Gold series no longer moving forward at DC Studios. What do you think about all these Marvel and DC cancellations? Would Samara Weaving and Inde Navarrette be good additions to the MCU's X-Men? Let us know below! First proper look at Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Thor rallying heroes, closing with "we need a miracle" before turning around stunned at a "hey pal." Channing Tatum as Gambit. Cyclops, Mystique, Ant-Man, the Fantastic Four, the Wakandans. Tickets on sale now. Opens December 18. The SDCC Hall H panel is Saturday — further reveals expected. It's a good time to love movies.

This week on Sibling Watchery, Bob and Monét recap RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 11, Episode 3, the final episode of the first bracket. They question whether Morgan was right about Mystique all along and if playing too earnest of a game kept Morgan from moving forward. They also wonder if Mystique is intentionally making good TV or genuinely thinks she's doing well in the competition. The queens are challenged to sell on the Home Spooky Network in monster drag, leading Bob and Monét to discuss partner strategy, Morphine's prosthetics, and whether Lucky Starzzz is giving more coronavirus than vampire. They also ask if A'Keria is better at improv than she realizes and whether confidence matters more than talent. On the Paris-themed runway, they react to the looks, Paris rat lore, Morgan's cutlery fashion, and whether lip syncing is truly one of Dawn's strengths. The queens are scaring up sales for this week's spooky home shopping improv challenge. The scariest part is that they have to do it in pairs, or more specifically, that Lucky and Mystique have to work together. Dawn makes the judges howl, Morgan does in fact do pretty well for a dead bitch, and while it seems like Akeria's got this all wrapped up, it's ultimately up to Ru to choose between an old favorite from Peanuts and a Davenport born to do drag. In this episode of the RuPaul's Drag Race Recap Show, host Joe Betance is joined by special guest co-host Adam Salandra to break down the design challenge of the season. From point-distribution drama to "demon twinks" and unconventional materials, we dissect everything that happened on the main stage and in the workroom. The Daddy Discourse: Joe and Adam kick things off with a candid (and slightly weird) conversation about fatherhood terminology and how kids navigate having two dads. Point Distribution & Betrayals: The queens head back to the workroom to de-drag and distribute their MVQ points. We discuss Morphine's disappointment and Lucky Stars' decision to snub her in favor of Mystique. Mini Challenge Madness: The girls attempt to put on "chonies" without using their hands. Spoiler: Nobody wins, but it leads to a hilarious story about Joe's "Sisterhood of the Traveling Chonies". Maxi Challenge: Bar Queen Couture: The queens are tasked with creating high-fashion looks from unconventional materials based on queer bar categories like Leather, White Party, and Piano Bar. Runway Review: A'keria C. Davenport stuns in White Party realness. Dawn brings the "demon twink" energy to the Piano Bar. Lucky Stars confuses (and delights) as a pinata in a donut hole. Mystique Summers Madison redeems her Season 2 country past. The Lip Sync Battle: A'keria and Dawn face off to Fergie's "Fergalicious" for the win and a major advantage in the competition. "I thought Dawn was such a demon twink... she's no longer nice to their faces either. Progress!" — Joe Betance "I am a dual type of daddy, so I think it's fine." — Adam Salandra Follow the Show:Be sure to subscribe and join us three times a week as we continue to discuss, dissect, and deconstruct every episode of RuPaul's Drag Race All-Stars Season 11. This week on Sibling Watchery, Bob and Monét recap the premiere of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 11. They react to the return of the bracket format and why it pushes queens to come in fighting harder from the start. The queens take on a group dance challenge and write verses. They ask if Mystique is fully invested in the competition, whether she's still holding a grudge against Morgan, and if Morphine is returning fully delusional. On the "La Toya's R Us" runway, they break down the looks, discuss Dawn bringing padding back, and Bob reestablishes what nude illusion is actually supposed to look like.
