After watching #1 Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, James Cameron-Wilson says he's exhausted by all these fantasy franchises. The effects are impressive but the plot seems redundant and he was extremely bored. Not so with #8 Finding Emily, the best romcom he has seen in quite some time. Produced by the team behind Love Actually and Bridget Jones, it's about a student trying to find a girl he clicked with, only for the search to go badly awry. Humming with great Curtis-esque lines, it has an engaging freshness and feels very real. After a brief mention of Hen, in which a hen observes Greek life, James discusses The Wizard of the Kremlin, starring Paul Dano and Alicia Vikander, about a filmmaker who becomes an adviser to Putin. On various platforms, it has an air of the Europudding. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
"The Wizard Of The Kremlin" is a 2025 English-language French political satire film directed by Olivier Assayas, who co-wrote the screenplay with Emmanuel Carrère. It is based on the 2022 novel by Giuliano da Empoli. It follows the fictional government official Vadim Baranov (Paul Dano) during the final years of the Soviet Union and the turbulent early years of the Russian Federation, as a young Vladimir Putin (Jude Law) rises to power. It also stars Alicia Vikander, Will Keen, Tom Sturridge, and Jeffrey Wright. Dano and Assayas were both kind enough to spend some time talking with us about their work and experiences making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from Vertical Entertainment. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... We review The Assessment (2024) starring Alicia Vikander!
This week, Matthew Sargent is back to talk about 2021's dark fantasy tale, The Green Knight. It's an adaptation of the poem of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, written and direted by David Lowery. It stars Dev Patel as Gawain, with Alicia Vikander in dual roles, Joel Edgerton, and Ralph Ineson. So, is this a visual feast, or pretentious and overly confusing? Swedish-born Alicia Vikander won global acclaim in 2015 for playing Vera Britten in Testament Of Youth, and a humanoid robot in the thriller Ex-Machina. The following year she won an Academy Award for her supporting role with Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl, along with a Screen Actors Guild Award and BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations. Since then her diverse range of screen roles have included playing a spy boss in the film Jason Bourne, computer game heroine Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, and Gloria Steinem in the biopic The Glorias. The daughter of acclaimed stage actor Maria Fahl, she tells John Wilson how she first performed on stage at the age of seven in a musical written by Benny and Bjorn of ABBA. She also appeared in Swedish television dramas and films as a child actor. In 2025 Alicia Vikander makes her return to the stage in a new version of Ibsen's The Lady From The Sea at The Bridge in London, her first theatre role since she was a child. Producer: Edwina Pitman

Written and directed by Alex Garland in his directorial debut, Ex Machina is the science fiction film starring Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, and Oscar Isaac. Rob and Jason rewind to the year 2015 to review the decade old movie that has only just become more relevant with time. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson) a programmer at a huge Internet company, wins a contest that enables him to spend a week at the private estate of Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac), his firm's brilliant CEO. When he arrives, Caleb learns that he has been chosen to be the human component in a Turing test to determine the capabilities and consciousness of Ava (Alicia Vikander), a beautiful robot. However, it soon becomes evident that Ava is far more self-aware and deceptive than either man imagined.
Synthetic Sexuality: Alex Garland's Ex Machina AI continues to hold our fascination. This week Mr. Chavez & I dive into Alex Garland's examination of Artificial Intelligence with 2014s Ex Machina. Set, as Garland describes, "Ten minutes from now," Ex Machina is a fascinating film with exceptional performances from Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, and Alicia Vikander. Few films are able to capture the subtleties and realities of science fiction paranoia with this level of skill. As these talks have continued over the last few episodes, the paranoia is becoming greater as the realities of our world begin to live up to predictions. Garland does creative and powerful work; asking questions and presenting situations that seem to be more likely than simple imagination. On the latest episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo steps into a high-concept, near-future world of moral quandaries and psychological pressure with the sci-fi drama "The Assessment." Directed by Fleur Fortuné and starring Elizabeth Olsen, Alicia Vikander, and Himesh Patel, the film follows a couple evaluated by the government over seven increasingly intense days to determine whether they're worthy of having a child. Think of a creepy, contained "Children of Men" by way of Ingmar Bergman and Charlie Kaufman. The film recently premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and hits VOD on April 8th, delivering a minimalist but emotionally potent take on societal control, intimacy, and parenthood. To talk through it all, we sat down with both stars to dig into the emotional challenges of the project, their collaborations with Fortuné, and what kind of psychological strength it takes to survive the film's titular assessment.
"The Assessment" had its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it received positive reviews for its sci-fi drama concept and performances from Elizabeth Olsen, Alicia Vikander & Himesh Patel. The film, set in a futuristic society destroyed by climate change, tells the story of a successful young couple who must face heavy scrutiny from a female assessor over the course of seven days to observe, evaluate, and determine if they are worthy of having a child. In this episode of the 3 Geeks Podcast, we sit down with the incredibly talented Amie Mackenzie, an American bi-coastal actor making major moves in 2024. With eight exciting projects this year, Amie is proving to be a rising force in television and film. She kicked off the year with a role in Elsbeth (Season 1), followed by a standout appearance in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, where she shares the screen with Nathan Lane in a stunning dinner party scene. Later this year, audiences can catch her in a Netflix series alongside Nestor Carbonell, and she has also landed a role in Taylor Sheridan's highly anticipated new show, The Madison, playing an entitled frenemy of Michelle Pfeiffer's character. We also dive into Amie's role in Dexter: Original Sin, the upcoming prequel to the hit Showtime series. She shares insights into working on the project, what fans can expect from this fresh take on Dexter's early years, and how it was stepping into the world of one of TV's most iconic crime dramas. With her ability to seamlessly navigate between thrilling crime series and prestige dramas, Amie's versatility is undeniable. Beyond television, Amie's film career is also taking off. She recently worked on a project with Alicia Vikander and Wagner Moura, expected to make the festival rounds in late 2025 or early 2026. Her involvement in the Sundance Director's Lab led to another feature film opportunity, which is also set for festival releases next year. Before this breakout year, Amie had already built an impressive resume with roles in Better Call Saul, AJ and the Queen (alongside RuPaul), MacGruber, Deputy, Messiah, and Taylor Sheridan's 1923. In this interview, she shares her experiences working on these incredible projects, what it's like collaborating with some of Hollywood's biggest names, and what the future holds for her rapidly growing career. Show Notes This week we go back in time to when AI was a remarkable step forward instead of a feature on all of our devices, whether we like it or not, with Alex Garland's Ex Machina. Oscar Isaac plays a billionaire that falls into all of the billionaire stereotypes that have proven true with the rise of Elon Musk: a self-proclaimed demi-god. Domhnall Gleeson plays a patsy for every other speaking character. Alicia Vikander plays – well, that's the question isn't it, what – or who – is she? It's the UConn Popcast, and Ex Machina, Alex Garland's 2014 sci fi movie, is a provocative examination of what an updated Turing test for a super-capable AI might look like, if the designer of the test was a megalomaniacal tech-mogul / genius. The movie, starring Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson, and Alicia Vikander, is a rich and often confounding text, which seems to posit a horrifying possibility: what if the real alignment problem is teaching AI the worst of humanity's manipulative and instrumental traits? Dive into the drama, controversy, and historical twists of Firebrand, the much-anticipated film starring Jude Law as Henry VIII and Alicia Vikander as Catherine Parr. Based on Elizabeth Fremantle's The Queen's Gambit, this gripping retelling reimagines Catherine Parr's life in bold and unexpected ways. But how much of it is rooted in truth?
"Rumours" had its world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its off-beat humor, entertaining ensemble, which includes names like Cate Blanchett, Charles Dance, Alicia Vikander, Denis Ménochet and more, and hazy, dream-like direction that combines multiple genres. Directors/Screenwriters Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson were kind enough to talk with us about their latest film during the New York Film Festival, which will open in theaters on October 18th from Bleecker Street. It's another hat-trick of wonderful guests on this week's Empire Podcast. Which is good, as there's only two colleagues of such lethal cunning. Due to a combination of work absences, holidays, and general apathy, only Helen O'Hara and James Dyer are on pod-duty this week and, thanks to Jimbo's unfortunate bout of Covid, they're doing it remotely as well. Never fear, though, they still bring the film-related fun as they take a couple of listener questions, discuss the week's movie news (before the Ocean's 14 story broke, naturally), and review Firebrand, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Starve Acre, and Rebel Ridge. The latter also provides one of our guests, as Chris Hewitt talks to its writer/director, Jeremy Saulnier, about its long route to the small screen (it's a Netflix movie). That's right at the end of the whole pod [ 1:32:47 - 1:51:41 approx] and Firebrand provides the two other guests, as we talk to Henry VIII, aka Jude Law, and the wife who survived him, Katherine Parr, aka Alicia Vikander, who talk to Helen and Chris, respectively. [17:04 - 33:12 approx for Alicia and 51:28 - 1:09:04 approx for Jude] Remember: divorced beheaded died, divorced beheaded survived is not just a great way to remember the fates of Henry VIII's six wives, but also the fate of the podteam members who didn't appear on this week's episode. Enjoy.
