In this episode of Superhero Ethics, hosts Matthew and Riki analyze HBO's The Penguin series starring Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti. Set in Matt Reeves' Batman universe following the events of The Batman movie, the show explores the power vacuum left in Gotham's criminal underworld after the fall of crime boss Carmine Falcone. What makes Oz Cobb a compelling villain protagonist? The hosts discuss how the series portrays Oswald "Oz" Cobb (The Penguin) as a complex character who constantly shifts between sympathetic and monstrous. Unlike previous iterations that leaned into fantastical elements, this Penguin is grounded as a mobster with a physical disability who uses his exceptional charisma and manipulation skills to climb Gotham's criminal ladder. The show reveals his troubled childhood, including his complicated relationship with his mother and the shocking revelation that he was responsible for his brothers' deaths. How does The Penguin explore themes of respect and power?Matthew and Riki examine how Oz's actions are driven by his desperate need for respect and recognition. The series shows how he positions himself as a champion for the neglected citizens of Crown Point—getting electricity restored to the neighborhood while simultaneously building his criminal empire. This "crime socialism" approach allows him to frame himself as fighting for fairness and equality within the criminal world, convincing lower-level criminals to revolt against their bosses and support him instead. What makes the relationship between Oz and Victor so central to the story? The hosts highlight how the mentor-protégé relationship between Penguin and Victor Aguilar serves as the emotional core of the series. Though toxic and complicated—with Penguin both bullying Victor for his stutter while fiercely defending him from others who do the same—their bond provides some of the most compelling moments in the show. The hosts note interesting parallels to the Batman-Robin dynamic, positioning it as a dark mirror of that heroic relationship.Other topics covered in the episode:How Cristin Milioti's Sophia Falcone serves as a compelling antagonist with her own complex motivations for revengeThe shocking finale twist and its implications for Penguin's character developmentThe portrayal of Arkham Asylum and its problematic depiction of mental health institutionsConnections to Matt Reeves' broader Batman universe and potential future storylinesThe grounded approach to classic Batman villains compared to previous adaptationsHow the show depicts crime families filling power vacuums—similar to real-world political situationsThe Penguin demonstrates how villain-centered narratives can provide rich ethical territory to explore when characters are given depth and complexity. By examining the psychology and motivations behind traditionally one-dimensional villains, the show creates compelling television that challenges viewers to question their sympathies while never fully redeeming its monstrous protagonist. **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Disney's live-action Snow White has officially hit theaters… but the numbers aren't exactly what the Mouse House was hoping for. Kristian Harloff and John Rocha are breaking it all down on today's show! Did the online controversy and social media backlash play a role in Snow White falling short of expectations? Was the movie's reception doomed from the start, or was it a case of audiences just not connecting with another remake? The guys discuss the latest reports showing Snow White pulling in just $43 million domestically and $44.3 million internationally, landing the film at an $87.3 million global total—far under the $65M domestic target. We'll talk about Deadline's comparison to Dumbo, the CinemaScore, and the film's polarizing reactions. Plus, did Rachel Zegler's casting really hurt or help in certain markets? And what about those claims that the film overperformed in conservative counties despite the “Snow Woke” criticism? But that's not all! Kristian and Rocha also cover:

Kelsi and Trey dive deep into the history of Batman on screen, ranking every live-action portrayal of the Dark Knight and debating what each version got right (or horribly wrong). And then we get to our major conversation on Matt Reeves' The Batman and Robert Pattinson's fragile, gothic detective take on the character. We'll break down the noir-infused world Reeves has built, why Pattinson's emotionally stunted Bruce Wayne is the most fascinating interpretation yet, and how this film redefines Gotham's rogues gallery with Paul Dano's terrifying Riddler, Colin Farrell's scene-stealing Penguin, and Zoë Kravitz's mesmerizing, scene-stealing Selina Kyle. The Extra Credits YouTube ChannelBecome a member of The Extra Credits+ on Patreon hereHow to link Patreon to Spotify and AppleLetterboxd: The Extra CreditsTikTok: The Extra CreditsReddit: r/TheExtraCreditsInstagram: @theextracreditsTwitter: @theextracreditsSend requests, questions, and thoughts to our email: extracreditspod@gmail.com

Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes Last week, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Jason Momoa, the actor who famously played the title role in the billion-dollar grossing Aquaman film, has signed on to portray the character Lobo in the upcoming DC Studios film, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Momoa, no stranger to Warner Bros or DC, has long been campaigning for the role of the intergalactic biker bounty hunter who first debuted in comics in 1983. Elsewhere, filmmaker Matt Reeves, broke his silence on The Batman II delay situation while attending the Golden Globes this weekend, saying, “I can tell you that we'll be shooting this year. We're doing something where the story continues from, but I hope that people will be surprised by.” During a recent interview with GQ, Andrew Garfield, the Amazing Spider-Man himself, dispelled rumors that he has signed on to reprise his role in the upcoming fourth Marvel Studios' Tom Holland-led Spider-Man film. Ever self-aware, the actor acknowledged the weight his objections hold, given his track record, having been in the exact situation prior to No Way Home's release, saying, “I'm gonna disappoint you - Yeah, no. But I know no one's gonna trust anything I say from now on.” We might be light on Marvel news this week, but Sunday evening's 82nd Golden Globes Awards ceremony saw many an MCU friend and foe in attendance. Kathryn Hahn was nominated for her role in Agatha All Along, Sebastian Stan was twice nominated and won once, and Captain America Brave New World stars, Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford took the stage to present an award, as did MCU alumni Michelle Yeoh and Jeff Goldblum. Now that you got your Marvel fix, let's talk about some winners and snubs: on the TV side of things, the winners circle featured usual suspects – FX's Shogun and The Bear, still being awarded as a comedy despite the protests, Max's Hacks, and newcomer Baby Reindeer from Netflix snagging a couple of wins. Also worthy of note: Colin Farrell, narrowly avoiding a snub, took home the sole award for HBO's The Penguin. Netflix and A24 ruled the evening as far as film is concerned, with Emilia Perez and The Brutalist being highly awarded, although Wicked refused to be relegated to the sidelines, taking home the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Award. Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King led the first weekend of the new year with $23.8 million domestically, reaching $476.4 million globally. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 followed closely with $21.2 million in the U.S. and a worldwide total of $336.3 million. Tom Holland and Zendaya are engaged – as revealed by the ring she wore during the Golden Globes Red Carpet Peacock is developing a film reboot of the 2011 NBC series Grimm, with Drop Dead Diva creator Josh Berman writing and executive producing alongside the original show's co-creators and showrunners. HBO has released a new short teaser trailer for The Last of Us season 2 and confirmed that the series will begin streaming in April. Sony has announced a movie adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn in collaboration with PlayStation Studios and Columbia Pictures, the studio behind 2022's Uncharted. While no release date has been set, the film will bring Guerrilla Games' post-apocalyptic adventure starring machine hunter Aloy to the big screen. Jacob Elordi is in early negotiations to replace Paul Mescal in Ridley Scott's The Dog Stars. Mark L. Smith and Christopher Wilkinson wrote the script for the 20th Century Studios film, which adapts Peter Heller's 2012 apocalyptic novel of the same name. Disney+ has greenlit a pilot for a TV series adaptation of Louis Sachar's beloved novel "Holes." The project follows in the footsteps of Disney's 2003 film version of the book, though no further details about the potential series have been revealed yet.

The Penguin series on HBO and Max has been one of the most critically acclaimed comic book-based TV shows in years. Much of the praise has gone towards actors like Colin Farrell, who plays the classic Batman villain. But the makeup and prosthetics designer Mike Marino has been singled out for his innovative and striking design of the main character. Mike sculpted an entire head and body for The Penguin, a.k.a. Oz Cobb, that obscured most of Colin Farrell while also liberating the actor to inhabit a role he might otherwise not have been cast. Mike and I go deep into his creative process working with Farrell and the director/producer Matt Reeves on The Batman film and the spin-off show The Penguin. We also talk about Mike's mentors in the field like Dick Smith and Rick Baker, who created some of the most iconic makeup designs in cinema history.
