Director Guy Ritchie, when his movies don't star Madonna, tends to make his movies about crime and capers and calamity. His latest movie, “In The Grey”, is no different. This time, instead of an unintelligible Brad Pitt or that guy who played Iron Man playing Sherlock Holmes, we get Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal playing some action and adventure bad-asses named Sid and Bronco, respectively. Their job is to protect big money debt collector and fixer extraordinaire Rachel Wild, played by Eiza Gonzalez. She sells the capital management firm who loaned a billion dollars to a drug boss, who is now not paying the billion back, on her being able to get the drug boss to pay it back. Predictably the drug boss, as drug bosses tend to do, turns this debt collection into a dangerous game of automatic weapons, mines, drones with bombs and booby traps. Ritchie brings his usual well-choreographed action to this movie but is it worth going to the theater to find out what happens? Check out this episode of Movies Merica to find out! “In The Grey” also stars Carlos Bardem, Rosamund Pike, Fisher Stevens, Michael Vu, Mohammed Al Turki, Kojo Attah, James Wong, Kristofer Hivju, Darrell D'Silva, Emmett J. Scanlan, Christian Ochoa Lavernia and Gonzalo Bouza.  Support the showFeel free to reach out to me via:@MoviesMerica on Twitter @moviesmerica on InstagramMovies Merica on Facebook

This episode, we bring you Marjane Satrapi. She gave this talk on April 7, 2008, just about one year after the film adaptation of her comic Persepolis had been featured at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award for best animated feature. Sastrapi's death was announced on June 4, 2026. President Emmanual Macron of France said in the announcement, “Her passing marks the loss of a leading figure in French culture and a freedom-loving artist whose work carried a universal message and earned her immense international acclaim.” Satrapi was an Iranian born French author and film director and is considered one of the greatest contemporary graphic novelists.  Her work includes critically acclaimed and canonical books Persepolis and Persepolis 2, graphic narratives which both feature a protagonist, Marji, whose life parallels Satrapi's. The books follow Marji from a childhood in Iran to spanning some of the most intense years of contemporary Iranian history during the Iranian revolution and the Iran-Iraq War, with Marji leaving the country as a teenager to study in Europe, returning to Tehran for a period before eventually setting in Paris. Satrapi was an Iranian women, working in France, and became one the bestselling writers & artists in the United States. The specifics of her story are of course, unique to her, but like great storytellers she connected with millions of readers because of the universal nature of her work. In addition to Persepolis and Persepolis 2, she wrote several children’s books and other graphic novels, and she directed several feature films, including 2019's “Radioactive,” about the life of Marie Curie, adapted from the graphic novel by Lauren Redniss and starring Rosamund Pike. Though she continued living in Paris, she remained an activist against Iran's Islamic regime, in particular protesting the restrictions on women. She said, “We artists must be humble but doing nothing is worse, being indifferent is worse. In this talk, Satrapi is wry, ironic and occasionally sarcastic.  She references the influence of Persian miniatures and Art Speigelman's Pulitzer Prize winning graphic narrative Maus – the first comic ever to win the Pulitzer Prize.  I use the work “comic” here instead of graphic novel intentionally since Satrapi rejects the term “graphic novel” as pretentious.  To the end, she is grounded and funny, whether she is talking about American culture in Tehran in the 1970s or the personal challenges she faced as an artist working for the first time on film and being forced to collaborate with a huge group of people – a process she at first disliked, then came to appreciate. “Any intellectual and any artistic work, by definition, is an anti-fanatic work. Fanaticism presses on the button of emotion…When you make an intellectual and artistic work— when you don't pretend that you have the answers, but you only have questions to ask—when you make this work, for the person who listens to or reads you, not only do you ask them to be smart, but to work—to try to find the answers themselves.” Marjane Satrapi is an Iranian-born French graphic novelist, illustrator, film director, and children's book author. She was born in Iran in 1969 and grew up in Tehran in a middle-class Iranian family, attending the Lycee Francais until she left for Vienna and, later, Strasbourg to study Decorative Arts. She eventually moved to France, where she now lives with her husband, Mattias Ripa. Satrapi has worked on many graphic novels and animated films, but she attracted worldwide attention for her autobiographical comic series Persepolis. The work chronicles her childhood in Iran and her adolescence in Europe. In 2007, Persepolis was adapted into a critically acclaimed animated film of the same name that received over 25 major international award nominations and over 15 major international awards.

James Cameron-Wilson is rather mystified by the success of #1 Backrooms, with Chewitel Ejiofor. A horror film based on a web series, it baffled James, unaware of its precedents but people are loving it. James was much more taken with #9 Power Ballad with Paul Rudd. Written and directed by John Carney, it's even better than his earlier films such as Once and Sing Street. Peopled with interesting characters and with witty dialogue and great music, it reduced James to tears. Ladies First, on Netflix, is an English-language version of their first French-language film. Starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Rosamund Pike, it's about a womanising liar who wakes up in a parallel universe which is a matriarchy. With echoes of Mel Gibson's What Women Want, it's witty and well acted but is more farcical fantasy than satire. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Well, we won't mince words: LADIES FIRST (3:37) is some bullshit. In fact, it may be the worst movie Evan and Dave have seen in 2026 (and we haven't forgotten DOOBA DOOBA). No, LADIES FIRST is a special kind of movie; it's absolutely thoughtless, largely devoid of wit, and it doesn't play by rules it sets for itself. Stars Sacha Baron Cohen and Rosamund Pike, and a largely well-known cast of English acting heavyweights, slum it. This movie is so bad it's kind of a miracle. And it also fails confidently, so take that and it thoughtlessness, and you have a truly mind-blowing piece of shit. Over on Patreon, we talk about Ben Affleck's THE TOWN.

Gillian Flynn's novel Gone Girl defined a literary niche when it first came out in 2012, and it still defines it to this day. David Fincher's great 2014 adaptation—written in collaboration with Flynn—is one of the greatest and most fun movie thrillers of the 21st century. Now I want to present you with a terrifying scenario: What if this book had come out three years later, and instead of this glorious 2.5-hour film, we got a boring 12-hour streaming series? Come on, you can see it right now in your mind: Episode 3 is a flashback to Amy's life as a child, with none of the regular actors in it. Episode 9 is the Desi episode, and Amy finally arrives at his door right before the closing credits. No thank you. And so 1-Week Rental is here to take you through the history of that movie. How Gillian Flynn wrote her novel and then worked closely with Fincher on the production, how perfect the casting of both Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike was, how Reese Witherspoon produced the movie with the intention of playing Amazing Amy herself only to be told by Fincher she was all wrong for the part, and how this movie is loosely based on the lives of Laci Roth and Matt Stokes. When faced with this announcement Damien calls the office and randomly promotes Alex (Pike) to the position as merely a facade. A bump on the head leaves Damien believing that roles within not only the agency but his sphere have him believing that women now rule the world and his office. Alex and Damien have literally reversed roles at the agency and Damien searches for a way to return his world back to what it was before he bumped his head. The question the hosts tackle first: is this actually a spy movie? And then they get to: Is it any good? The cast is stacked. Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill headline as operatives Bronco and Sid, joined by Eiza González, Rosamund Pike, Carlos Bardem, Fisher Stevens, and Jason Wong. Ed Wild handled cinematography, reuniting much of the team behind The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Dan and Tom walk through storytelling, pacing, action choreography, casting performances, and set design. They weigh the strengths against the weak spots—and there are a few of both. Ritchie claims the movie is based on a true story, which adds an intriguing layer to the mission's premise. If you love spy cinema—from Bond to Mission: Impossible—this no-spoilers first look gives you everything you need before you hit the theater. FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ·       Directed by Guy Ritchie — the creative force behind Operation Fortune, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. ·       Claimed to be based on a true story — Ritchie says the extraction mission depicted in the movie is rooted in real events. ·       A tight 97-minute runtime — the movie moves fast, using narration and on-screen graphics to pack the story into under two hours. ·       Carlos Bardem steals scenes as villain Manny Salazar — brother of Javier Bardem (Skyfall's Silva), he delivers a standout performance. ·       Not connected to The Gray Man series — despite the similar title, IN THE GREY (with an "E") is a completely separate movie and franchise.   Tell us what you think: Is IN THE GREY a movie you'll go see? A welcome meal for the star amidst her West End run.  Rosamund Pike is the latest theatre actor to visit us in the middle of a hectic show schedule, with a performance at London's Wyndham's Theatre to follow her visit to Dish. In Inter Alia, Rosumund stars as Jessica Parks, a London Crown Court Judge balancing work, motherhood and friendship. It's an incredible central performance that earned Rosamund an Olivier Award for Best Actress, just a few days before we sat down to record.  Rosamund, celebrated for her roles in Pride & Prejudice, Die Another Day, Gone Girl and I Care A Lot, also has a new film on the horizon; Ladies First is a fantastical comedy where a misogynistic CEO Damian (Sacha Baron Cohen) finds himself in a world dominated by women, with Alex, played by Rosamund, as his boss. Ladies First is coming to Netflix on 22 May.  Angela serves Rosamund a beautiful dish of roast trout with brown butter alongside freshly cooked asparagus. The meal is perfectly paired with a glass of The Ned Pinnacle Sauvignon Blanc. Rosamund, a keen cook, is delighted with a hot plate of food at a time when her pre-show meals are dominated by cold salads - and the occasional sardine…  With a wide ranging career on stage and on film, we get some brilliant tales of life on-set from Rosamund, including dark chocolate energy boosts, and the value of co-stars who double up as mixologists.  You can watch full episodes of Dish on YouTube and on Spotify.  All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish If you want to get in touch with us about anything at all, contact dish@waitrose.co.uk  Dish from Waitrose is made by Cold Glass Productions Learn more about your ad choices. Rosamund Pike! What a woman. Famed for her portrayals of razor-sharp, morally complex and deliciously unpredictable characters, she brings that same intriguing duality to this conversation. Thoughtful and quietly rebellious, she reflects on a career that has defied neat narratives from the very beginning. After taking a year out from studying English at University of Oxford to pursue acting, she graduated and stepped straight into the global spotlight as Bond girl Miranda Frost in Die Another Day. From there came a string of unforgettable movies: Pride & Prejudice, Jack Reacher, A Private War and Saltburn. Her chilling performance in Gone Girl earned her an Oscar nomination and she took home a Golden Globe for I Care a Lot. In 2025, she returned to the stage for the first time in 15 years in the National Theatre's production of Inter Alia. In this episode, she talks about her ‘failure' to get married, the realities of raising two sons and her decision not to read a single review of her work for the past 25 years. Plus why she's ‘constantly in battle' with her own fear, her failure to be an action movie hero, her miserable attempt to cook a rabbit and whether or not she's ‘cool'. ✨ IN THIS EPISODE: 00:00 Intro 03:18 No reviews rule 06:57 Early perfectionism and stage craft 07:58 Inter Alia and modern womanhood 10:09 Luminate meditation mask 12:42 Failure to learn Chinese 19:09 Onstage mishaps and acting roles 28:59 What Cool Really Means 29:26 Cool Girl vs Amy 32:21 Failing at Being An Action Star 36:52 Failure to Get Married 45:17 Mothering Two Boys 47:28 Smells and Teen Hygiene 48:44 Rabbit Dinner and Being Enough

Formula 1 is in a moment of pause. The 2025 racing cars have been wheeled into storage, and the racetracks have fallen silent. But inside the top-secret F1 factories, each team is facing a winter like never before. Revised rules for 2026 are reshaping the cars and redefining what powers them, and that means the pressure is on for the hundreds working back at base. Before diving into the future, the team at Brixworth, the home of Mercedes High Performance Powertrains, are marking the end of an era. It's here that the engine - which drove Mercedes to eight straight Constructors' Championships between 2014 and 2021 - first came to life. Brixworth boss Hywel Thomas has planned a very special celebration to mark the end of this engine cycle and our expert guides Sarah Holt and Holly Samos were there to join in the festivities. This is an important time of transition for Formula 1's engine suppliers. Thomas and his Brixworth team have been developing the new engine that will power Mercedes and three other teams, on the grid in 2026.There is parallel work going on at Brackley, where Mercedes Technical Director James Allison is overseeing all other aspects of the new season's car design. The British engineer has more than three decades' experience in F1 but even he is a little daunted by what he calls the “biggest ever” rule change in the sport's history. While the work intensifies inside the F1 factories, it is, in contrast, time for the drivers to unwind. Italian Mercedes star Kimi Antonelli is heading home to spend some time with his family and friends, while Haas driver Ollie Bearman is holidaying in the Maldives before spending Christmas with his family in Monaco. Back at base, the Haas team are hard at work preparing for F1's new era in 2026 and that means both sides of the garage are collaborating too. Laura Muller - who works alongside Esteban Ocon and is an F1 trailblazer as the sport's first female race engineer - has just wrapped up her first season on the pitwall. Like Bearman, she knows the experiences of 2025 will help her navigate what lies ahead.F1 race-winner Valtteri Bottas is preparing for his return to the grid with the Cadillac Formula 1 team in South Australia. But even in an idyllic spot for winter training, the Finnish favourite is already counting down to pre-season testing and getting to the first race in Melbourne, Australia as he starts the next chapter of his F1 career.F1: Back at Base is an IMG Production for the BBC, hosted by Rosamund Pike.Co-hosts & Executive Producers are Sarah Holt and Holly Samos.

In this eight-part series, hosted by actress Rosamund Pike, we're going behind-the-scenes with next generation stars, Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli and British Haas hotshot Ollie Bearman, during their rookie Formula 1 seasons in the 2025 World Championship. We are in the passenger seat with the drivers - and we do mean that literally - following the final races of their maiden campaigns and lifting the lid on driver life away from the track with F1 experts Sarah Holt and Holly Samos as our guides.Former teammates in junior categories, Antonelli and Bearman, are now simultaneously finding their feet on motorsport's toughest grid. In this series we hear from the two drivers, and those closest to them, as their journey to the top continues. From inside the Mercedes team, experienced race engineer Pete Bonnington, aka Bono, reveals how he is guiding Antonelli to follow in the footsteps of his former driver, seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton while Driver Development Advisor Gwen Lagrue explains how he spotted the natural talent that convinced Mercedes to sign Italian teenager Antonelli at a young age.Haas rookie Ollie Bearman already has a huge social media following but the attention directed at an F1 driver is next level. The British racer, who made his F1 debut with Ferrari in 2024 as a stand-in for a sick Carlos Sainz, is feeling a lot of love from the fans as we join him at a special appearance with Haas at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The 20-year-old can also count on family support and we hear from his younger brother Thomas, also a promising racer, and how they are deciding just who gets to go on Ollie's race simulator. As Bearman continues to bring home the points for Haas in 2025, Haas Head of Strategy and Driver Development Ed Brand and his race engineer Ronan O'Hara explain how Bearman is growing as one of F1's next generation stars. But it's not only the drivers who are driving forward F1's future - there is also a new team about to enter the top tier of motorsport. The series is also following the start-up Cadillac Formula 1 team as they race to join the grid for the very first time. Their uncharted journey is fraught with jeopardy, but they have unlocked their doors and let us inside. Fan favourites and former F1 race-winners Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez are making their comebacks with Cadillac - and we hear from both of them throughout the series.Cadillac team principal Graeme Lowdon and Executive Engineering Consultant Pat Symonds explain how the team have had a mountain to climb to make it to the grid in 2026, when major technical regulations, governing how the cars are designed and powered, are also set to shake up the sport.Hollywood legend Keanu Reeves is following in our tyre tracks as he documents Cadillac's journey to the grid. The actor is also predicting drama as F1 enters a new era in 2026. We hear from him in an exclusive interview as he anticipates that the “hopes and ambitions” of all the teams up-and-down the grid will be tested by the sport's new rules. As one season ends another, fraught with uncertainty like never before, lies just around the corner. In this series, we journey with the Cadillac F1 team and drivers Antonelli and Bearman over the winter as they prepare to go racing in F1's new era.- F1: Back at Base is an IMG Production for the BBC, hosted by Rosamund Pike - Co-hosts & Executive Producers are Sarah Holt and Holly Samos - The Producers are Alasdair Cresswell, Joe Aldridge, Jack Winstanley and Mitchell Marshall - Production Management from Abbie Collingwood, Katie Killeen and Giulia Duggan - The Senior Producer is Ollie Kneen - The Executive Producer for IMG is Steve Tebb - The Story Editor and Scriptwriter is Sarah Holt - The Showrunner is Holly Samos - And the Commissioning Editor at the BBC is Stevie Middleton

Then, they break down Edgar Wright's new action film, ‘The Running Man,' starring Glen Powell, which they found deeply messy but also full of impressively staged action scenes (28:01). Next, they unpack the new magician legacy sequel ‘Now You See Me: Now You Don't,' starring Jesse Eisenberg and Dave Franco. They explain their personal relationship with the original films and why Rosamund Pike was born to play an evil diamond heiress villain, and they hypothesize about what its potential box office chances are (59:23). Finally, Edgar Wright joins Sean to discuss the evolving landscape of studio filmmaking, how he constructs an elaborate action set piece, and the amazing story about how Powell was cast for the lead part (1:15:55). This week's episode of the Empire Podcast would surely deserve to get a full fat five points from Greg Davies, the Taskmaster himself, as Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and John Nugent apply themselves wholeheartedly (some more wholeheartedly than others, it must be said) to deciding which Taskmaster contestant has appeared in the best film. Then, the podteam take a look at the week's movie news and, in a bumper reviews section, cast their eyes over Edgar Wright's The Running Man, Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, Ruben Fleischer's Now You See Me: Now You Don't, Julia Ducournau's Alpha, Gurinder Chadha's Christmas Karma, and James Vanderbilt's Nuremberg. Three of those movies provide this week's guests, as Edgar Wright drops by the podbooth to natter with Chris about The Running Man, and meeting Stephen King; [21:43 - 33:05 approx] Now You Three Me's Isla Fisher and Rosamund Pike talk magic and manky accents, again with Chris; [56:16 - 1:09:05 approx] and Michael Shannon talks Nuremberg and (mostly) R.E.M., also with Chris. [1:42:53 - 1:55:38 approx] Oh, and there's a huge revelation about the pod itself lurking within there somewhere. Forget what you think you know... and enjoy.
