The Cinematography Podcast Episode 325: John Conroy, ASC, ISC For the Netflix six-part political thriller, Zero Day, cinematographer John Conroy, ASC, ISC worked with director Lesli Linka Glatter to create a visual style that felt grounded in reality. Their goal was to make the story, which follows a cyberterrorist attack, feel like it could happen tomorrow. This approach allowed them to focus on the human element and the psychological impact of the events rather than sensationalized drama or violence. John shot all six episodes of the series, a creative choice he found deeply rewarding, although he doesn't feel the need to always be the lead DP. “Ultimately, if you're lucky enough to be shooting, you should feel lucky enough that you're shooting,” he says. “Doing all six was really great because I felt that I could curate the whole look of the show by episode by episode. But if I was only going to do two episodes, I would have enjoyed it just as much.” The cohesive approach was important since they prepped the episodes over 10 weeks as three separate films. John and Glatter shotlisted scenes on weekends, deciding what images would create the most impact for beginnings, transitions and exits for each scene. He made notes in his script to track the desired look, light, and emotion for each scene. John says working with Robert De Niro was a pleasure. “It was one of the privileges of my career to shoot him. And he was very gracious and took notes and was very helpful with the camera crew and overall it was just like a really really good experience.” John found a subtle way to enhance De Niro's performance through lighting and camera tests. “People's faces look different when you light them from one side or the other,” he notes. “I found with Bob that when he was lit from his right hand side, that he looked more severe than when he was lit from the left hand side.” John used this technique in interrogation scenes to emphasize the character's increasing pressure and tension. For more emotional scenes, he lit De Niro from the left to convey a more nuanced and serious tone. Framing each shot was important to the story as well. John always shot De Niro's character, George Mullen, around high doorways and down long hallways, making him seem trapped and under increasing pressure. A key element of the show's look is John's use of single-source lighting, keeping things simple and uncomplicated as much as possible. But he encountered a challenge with the Zero Day Commission offices, whose walls consisted of several layers of glass. John collaborated closely with the set builders to plan his shots and manage the numerous reflections in the office sets. To prevent unwanted double reflections, they created custom black panels to black out panes of glass behind the camera. The lights were cued to dim as actors walked through a shot, controlling reflections. John's passion for cinematography began at an early age, inspired by his father, Jack Conroy, who was also a cinematographer. At just 12, John began loading 16mm film for his father on documentaries and commercials. He then worked as a focus puller until he decided to move into cinematography after working on The DaVinci Code. He and his father were able to work together on the TV series Broadchurch, with Jack shooting second unit. John's current work can be seen on Wednesday Season 2, the upcoming Dune: Prophecy Season 2, and the upcoming Fallout Season 2. Find John Conroy: Instagram: @jccine See Zero Day on Netflix. TALK TO ME, TEXT ITHave you ever forgotten everything about a show you loved? Remembered exactly who a controversial judge was the moment their name appeared in the news again? Or felt your heart drop when trusted expectations were shattered? The weekend roundup kicks off with reflections on a Labor Day getaway to Tunica before diving into an unexpected Broadchurch binge-watch that revealed how completely we can forget even the most engaging stories. This segues into a deeper, more troubling revelation about Judge James Boasberg, who recently released a woman arrested for making explicit threats against former President Trump - overruling another judge's decision to deny bond. The contradiction between how such threats are handled raises serious questions about consistency in our justice system.Sports fans will appreciate the breakdown of Bill Belichick's disastrous UNC coaching debut, ending in a humiliating 48-14 loss that has many wondering if the 73-year-old NFL legend should consider retirement rather than rebuilding a struggling college program. But perhaps most heart-wrenching is the story of a mother who returned to pick up her daughter from a birthday party, only to discover the host had departed 90 minutes early, leaving her child alone at a roller rink without food or celebration. It's a stark reminder of how quickly trust between parents can be broken. The episode wraps with a touching personal moment - a rare FaceTime call from an adult daughter and plans to create new family traditions at a local water park. TALK TO ME, TEXT ITThe unpredictable dangers that surround us take center stage as I explore how quickly life can change when we least expect it. A Google software engineer's life was tragically cut short by a falling sequoia branch at Yosemite National Park, highlighting the random perils that exist even in nature's most beautiful settings. This sobering reminder of our vulnerability extends to supposed "controlled environments" too, as evidenced by the disturbing incident where an octopus latched onto a six-year-old boy at a Texas aquarium's interactive exhibit, requiring three staff members five minutes to free him.Beyond physical dangers, we're navigating social threats as well. The viral story of a 58-year-old professional who believes his age has rendered him unemployable resonates with many Gen-Xers and Boomers facing similar challenges. With studies showing 90% of workers over 40 experiencing ageism, it's clear that expertise and experience aren't always valued in today's job market. It's particularly frustrating when considering the superior work ethic many older workers bring to the table - something I've witnessed firsthand in my workplace, where punctuality and preparation vary dramatically between generations. My frustration reaches its peak when sharing how my workplace essentially penalized early arrivals by changing policies to accommodate chronically late employees. What kind of system discourages dedication while enabling tardiness? As I wrap up today's episode, I'm on the hunt for new television recommendations - preferably crime fiction without excessive elements, similar to Broadchurch or Landscapers. What are you watching right now that might fit my tastes? I'd love to hear your suggestions for solid, entertaining shows that don't sacrifice quality storytelling for agenda-pushing content.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched!Start for FREE Thanks for listening! Join Greg Alba & Aaron Alexander as they swap London's rainy streets for the seemingly sleepy village of Sandford in Edgar Wright's 2007 action-comedy Hot Fuzz. When top London policeman Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg, Shaun of the Dead, The World's End) is transferred to the idyllic West Country, he's paired with bumbling local cop Danny Butterman (Nick Frost, Paul, Attack the Block). But Sandford's picture-postcard charm hides a dark secret—and Angel's meticulous policing uncovers a string of “accidents” that may actually be murders disguised to maintain the village's Perfect Parish Award. Rounding out the stellar cast are Jim Broadbent as the genial but suspicious Inspector Frank Butterman (Iris, Moulin Rouge!), Timothy Dalton chomping scenery as elitist Simon Skinner (James Bond in The Living Daylights, Licence to Kill), and Olivia Colman bringing comic flair as pub manager Dorothy “The Heat” Lintott (The Favourite, Broadchurch). Rafe Spall stands out as self-important councilman Michael “Lurch” Armstrong (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), while Paddy Considine impresses as paranoid farmer Charlie Wainwright (The Bourne Ultimatum, The Outsider). Greg & A-A-Ron break down every memorable moment—from the frantic supermarket aisle shootout and the legendary “gravy train” pub brawl, to the adrenaline-pumping car chase through Sandford's narrow lanes and the explosive finale in the village church. Don't miss their take on the film's razor-sharp editing, signature Wright-Jedward humor, and the way Hot Fuzz brilliantly subverts buddy-cop tropes while delivering some of the most highly searched-for action-comedy sequences of the 2000s!

In this conversation, recorded the morning after the presidential election, comedy phenom Tig Notaro joins Jen and Amy (donned head to toe in black in mourning) to unpack the events of the day and to help them find their happy place in the world again, which she accomplishes with tactical success. By the end of the show, they've laughed so hard, they've forgotten most of their cares. In this episode, Tig regales us with her journey as an Emmy and Grammy-nominated comedian, the influence of her free-spirited mother, and how her family dynamics (and a few hilarious stories from her boys) have shaped her comedy. She also reflects on her journey of authenticity, what it means to be an icon in the LGBTQ+ community, and the significance of being true to oneself. In Rant or Rave, Jen and Amy muse about whether or not they have the chops to make it in stand-up, and we learn that Amy definitely has a deep well of material at her disposal. Speaking of which, be sure to listen for Tig's story about the weirdest gig she's ever performed! *** Thought-provoking Quotes: One of the things my mother told me growing up was to tell everyone to go to hell if they had a problem with me. And I certainly do not walk around telling everyone to go to hell but I think there's this thing in me, whether you know I was told that or not, I think people can tell that I don't have a desperation and I'm not going to do backflips for anybody. – Tig Notaro I didn't bust out of the closet. Passenger explores a close-knit community who are unwilling to face their fears of change, of outsiders and of the unknown. Set in the fictional small Northern town of Chadder Vale, Former Met Police Detective Riya Ajunwa (Wunmi Mosaku) investigates a series of strange and inexplicable crimes that have the townsfolk spinning on an axis. Riya arrived in decaying Chadder Vale five years ago and has since been searching for that ‘one big crime', the challenge that will make her feel alive again. Then one night, local girl Katie Wells (Rowan Robinson) mysteriously disappears. The town barely has time to register her absence before she reappears the next day, apparently safe and sound. The townsfolk ask few questions and normal life resumes. But for Riya, a relative outsider to the Chadder Vale way of life, none of this sits right. As a series of strange happenings and increasingly shocking crimes start unfolding within the town, the residents resort to short-sighted theories and blame outside influences such as the fracking site and its manager Jim Bracknell (David Threlfall). As things become stranger, the people push back on Riya's absurd notion that something is not right with this town. But what are they so afraid of?Passenger is written by debut screenwriter, Andrew Buchan who is best known for his acting roles on Broadchurch, The Honourable Woman and Better. Cast includes: Wunmi Mosaku (Loki), Barry Sloane (Revenge), Rowan Robinson (A Haunting in Venice), David Threlfall (Shameless), Arian Nik (Count Abdulla), Ella Bruccoleri (Call the Midwife).Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.
Two very different directors talk about two very different films on this episode of the Movies In Focus podcast. First-up, Kevin Smith talks about his 1980s set comedy, The 4:30 Movie and then later in the episode Euros Lyn discusses his vampire-comedy, The Radleys. Kevin Smith was one of the leading figures in the 1990s independent film scene. His self-financed low-budget comedy Clerks was a massive success and he went on to make the likes of Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma Jay And Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl and others. Working with rep company that includes the likes of Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Jason Mewes and Matt Damon, Smith's films have also had a strong autobiographical bent, incorporating moments and characters from his own life and adding his own style of acerbic wit. His latest film, The 4:30 Movie is his most autobiographical yet- a 1980s set coming of age story that not only takes place within the confines of Smith's home state of New Jersey - but also his very own SmodCastle cinema. It's a witty and heartfelt film that delivers the goods for fans of his work and those looking for a well-honed comedy. Kevin Smith talks about digging into his past to make the film, shooting in your own cinema - as well as the possibility of a Mallrats sequel. To say that Welsh director Euros Lyn has had an illustrious career would be an understatement. His career as a director is littered with some of the television's top shows including - Casualty, Doctor Who, Torchwood, Sherlock, Broadchurch, Happy Valley, Daredevil, His Dark Materials and Heartstopper. Lyn's new film, The Radleys is based on Matt Haig's book of the same name - and it stars Damian Lewis and Kelly Macdonald as a married couple with a young family - and they all just happen to be vampires. Euros Lyn's chat about The Radleys covers bringing the material to the screen and getting such a great cast for his vampire film.

The second part of our conversation includes: -What's the first thing you do when you get a new directing job? -What does casting look like? -How do you construct sequences for work you haven't written? -How do you schedule? -How do you run the edit process? -How do you manage the work/life balance as a working director? Lewis Arnold has just finished directing all 7 parts of THE LONG SHADOW for New Pictures/ITV. Prior to this he directed James Graham's SHERWOOD for House Productions/BBC1 and Jimmy McGovern's TIME, for BBC Studios starring Sean Bean and Stephen Graham. In the early days of their careers, Kate McClennan and Kate McCartney never got booked for the same TV shows. At the time, women were few and far between in comedy sketches - and executives never imagined they'd need more than one woman. Let alone more than one Kate. Once they finally met in person, the two became close friends and writing partners. They went on to create the Katering Show followed by Get Crackin' on the ABC. And now? They're back, with an Amazon Prime original television series which they self-describe as BroadChurch - but funny. Academy Award-nominated screenwriter and debut novelist, Iris Yamashita, spoke to me about working with Clint Eastwood, her journey from Hollywood to publishing, and falling down the rabbit hole with her first mystery “City Under One Roof.” Iris Yamashita has been working in Hollywood for over 15 years and was nominated for a “Best Original Screenplay” Oscar for the movie Letters from Iwo Jima (directed by Clint Eastwood). Her debut novel is City Under One Roof, described as “Alice in Wonderland meets Fargo,” and, “The ultimate locked room mystery, [the novel] drops readers into an isolated, snowy town and is perfect for fans of Twin Peaks, Mare of Easttown, and Broadchurch.” A Publishers Weekly starred review noted, “Unusual topography plays a major role in screenwriter Yamashita's atmospherically charged debut….This distinctively original perspective on a ‘community of stragglers, oddballs, and recluses' heralds the arrival of a major new talent.” #1 New York Times bestselling author C.J. Box called the book, “A compulsive page-turner that's both atmospheric and claustrophobic at the same time.” Iris continues to work in Hollywood, developing for both film and streaming media. She has taught screenwriting at UCLA and the American Film Institute. Stay tuned until the end of the show for a preview of the Audiobook, excerpted courtesy Penguin Random House Audio from City Under One Roof by Iris Yamashita, read by Aspen Vincent, Shannon Tyo, and Anna Caputo.
