On this week's show, Dana, Steve, and Dan Kois get into cultural topics of various scales. First, they examine The Christophers, the latest film from Steven Soderbergh. The small scale two-hander starring Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel about an aging artist and an upstart forger is intentionally intimate, but is it too slight? They discuss.Next, they pick up their cultural magnifying glasses to peep at The Miniature Wife, the new marital comedy series starring Matthew Macfadyen and Elizabeth Banks about a scientist who accidentally aims his shrink ray on his wife. Is this diminutive premise too small for its multiple episode execution? They discuss. Finally, they take up the small but mighty objects apparently floating at the bottom of many an it girl's purse: cigarettes. They respond to a recent piece in the Ankler “Cigarettes Get a Sequel: Hollywood's ‘Cool' Bad Habit Is Back.”In an exclusive bonus episode for Slate Plus subscribers, the panel gazes at the vast expanse of space and talks about Artemis II's mission to the far side of the moon. Euphoria makes its long-awaited return to our screens this week, after a four year hiatus. But can it possibly meet Boyd's lofty expectations when it lands on Sky/HBO Max (47:06)? And speaking of Sky, Matthew Macfadyen and Elizabeth Banks' size-shifting comedy The Miniature Wife also lands on that platform (1:01:04), and hit comedy Big Mood returns for another run on Channel 4 (1:11:05). Plus, we bust out our (metaphorical) turntables to thrash out our favourite TV needle drops, there's a lot of unnecessary watermark chat, and you're all invited to Steph's birthday party. Meghan and Miranda kick things off in matching green sweaters (not planned, allegedly) and a confession: Meghan has already ditched fall for full Christmas mode. From early decorations to Rankin-Bass Christmas classics and Elf on repeat, they ask the audience the big question... is it too early for Christmas? Then it's pop culture time: reviews of Netflix's Death by Lightning (Nick Offerman and Matthew MacFadyen as Garfield & his assassin), a hate-watch defense of Kim Kardashian's All's Fair, a spooky rec for All Her Fault on Peacock, and all the chaos from BravoCon — including Vicki getting her orange back, Lisa Rinna manifesting, and rumors of a Nene/Kim Ultimate Girls Trip. CNN Senior Global Affairs Analyst and author Bianna Golodryga joins to talk about her new book Don't Feed the Lion and how to actually teach kids to recognize and fight antisemitism. They dig into rising Jew-hatred from both the far right and far left, continued fallout from Tucker Carlson's softball interview with Nick Fuentes, the grotesque “America First, America Only” cockroach video from Matt Gaetz's producer, AIPAC as a political dog whistle, and why so many institutions still tiptoe around antisemitism. Meghan and Miranda then tackle the Epstein files, Megyn Kelly's “barely legal” comments about underage girls, and why trying to nuance the age of abuse victims is dangerous and unacceptable. We're covering Death by Lightning, Netflix's four-episode retelling of President James Garfield's assassination. Michael Shannon and Matthew Macfadyen tackle Garfield and the man hanged for killing him, Charles Guiteau. The series mixes political drama, medical tragedy, and historical recreation. Having read Destiny of the Republic, we hold the show to account: what it gets right, what it condenses, and what it flat-out invents. We break down the highlights (the 36-ballot convention, sharp lines lifted from the book, strong supporting turns from Bradley Whitford and Shea Whigham, and a well-staged shooting), along with the choices that miss the mark (compressed science, softened villains, and history buff head-scratchers). Frank and Thomas dive into Pride and Prejudice (2005) with a surprising amount of insight. After catching a recent theatrical re-release of the Jane Austen adaptation, the hosts unpack its romantic tension, cinematography, performances, and themes of societal expectations. Along the way, they reflect on Keira Knightley's breakout role, Matthew Macfadyen's modern take on Mr. Darcy, and how 19th-century courtship still hits in 2025. With some help from Frank's wife and linked video essays, they make sense of the story's deeper layers—reluctantly, but respectfully. Timestamps and Topics: 00:00:00 Welcome and Thomas's reluctant movie pick 00:00:41 The theatrical re-release and first impressions 00:01:17 Breakdown of the plot, scene by scene 00:04:47 What this movie says about power, class, and gender 00:06:50 The Mr. Bennet and Elizabeth dynamic 00:09:15 Mr. Darcy's character and casting impact 00:14:32 Understanding the dialog and social codes 00:17:12 Cinematography and standout shots 00:20:26 The iconic rain scene and its symbolism 00:24:23 Keira Knightley's performance and casting 00:26:18 Star-studded supporting cast 00:27:06 Comparing both proposals as visual storytelling 00:29:44 Does the movie feel too rushed? 00:33:03 Trivia: red flags, fake book titles, and bad eyesight 00:36:00 Final thoughts and star ratings 00:37:04 Next movie pick revealed: Galaxy Quest Key Takeaways: Pride & Prejudice (2005) is a well-crafted adaptation that, despite not being made for everyone, earns respect for its care and attention to detail. Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen bring depth to iconic characters, especially through subtext and physical acting. Joe Wright's direction is subtle but powerful, using natural lighting, one-shot sequences, and thoughtful framing. The story critiques societal norms by centering a woman (Elizabeth Bennet) who refuses to play by the rules. The movie has become a beloved comfort film, especially for those drawn to emotionally charged slow-burn romances. Quotes:
We couldn't have imagined a more random episode to leave you with before spring break, but hopefully there's a little something for everyone here at Breakfast All Day. We begin with "The Friend," a warm and wise drama about grief, healing, and a 150-pound Great Dane. We don't totally agree on how well this movie works, but the dog is amazing. Starring Naomi Watts, Bill Murray, Carla Gugino and Ann Dowd. In theaters. Next up is the four-part anthology "Freaky Tales," from "Captain Marvel" filmmakers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, returning to their indie roots. Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Dominique Thorne and Too $hort are among the stars of this intertwined homage to 1987 Oakland. In theaters. Finally, we catch up with "Holland," but you're welcome to avoid it. Nicole Kidman, Matthew Macfadyen and Gael García Bernal star in this overly familiar dark comedy about secrets lurking beneath the pristine veneer of small-town America. Streaming on Prime Video. Nick and Angela welcome a highly anticipated guest to Dish HQ. Keeley Hawes was born and raised in Central London. She won a scholarship to the Sylvia Young Theatre School and landed her first big job opposite Richard E. Grant in Dennis Potter's Karaoke in 1996. Today, Keeley Hawes is one of British television's finest actors, with leading roles in the biggest shows of the last decade. Her performances in Line of Duty, Bodyguard and It's a Sin received critical acclaim and kept audiences on the edge of their seats. In 2024 she starred in the Netflix drama Scoop alongside Gillian Anderson, Billie Piper and Rufus Sewell, and right now you can watch her in the BBC adaptation of Gill Hornby's bestselling novel Miss Austen on BBC iPlayer. Keeley's husband, Matthew Macfadyen, talked about his wife's favourite homemade sandwich on his episode of Dish in November 2024; curious, Angela makes one to share. For main, Angela prepares a delicious slow-cooked beef rib ragù with fresh pasta, and the experts at Waitrose pair this with a pazzia primitivo di manduria. Nick and Angela are honoured to host Keeley Hawes on her first ever podcast! Our trio discuss Keeley's preference for snacking over cooking, the legacy of Jane Austen and what it's like to be one of the most recognisable faces in the UK. You can now watch full episodes of Dish on YouTube All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish We can't all have a Michelin star chef in the kitchen, but you can ask Angela for help. Send your dilemmas to dish@waitrose.co.uk and she'll try to answer them in a future episode. Dish is a S:E Creative Studio production for Waitrose Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to the start of an At The Flicks double bill. Enough time has passed for us to look back sensibly (well as sensible as we can be) at the franchise films that revitalised their brand in the Summer season that was 2024. This first one and subject of this show is Deadpool & Wolverine. Here we will shock you, so be prepared. It's like listening to something from one of those alternative dimensions. Jeff actually defends the superhero movie while Phil, with an almost Trumpian rage, wants this movie burned at the stake. Perhaps Phil has been exposed to the radiation that is Marvel films for too long and has now turned into some sort of intellectual Hulk, while Jeff is responding to Graham's mental torture where he constantly repeats “Marvel is good, Marvel is good”! Other than taking opposite sides of an argument, here is what else you can expect in this episode: - Has Marvel over extended with this film? - Can you watch this without knowledge of other Marvel products? - Why does Phil hate Matthew Macfadyen? - Does Graham, who initially liked the film, always change his mind this often? - Where now for Marvel? So, take a chill pill, sit back, relax and enjoy the latest from At The Flicks. The second part of this Summer 2024 review is coming very shortly. Who knows the team might actually agree on that choice. Until then, see you At The Flicks

This week, Sami, Jordana, and Aleen kick things off with two very important discussions: which fast food chicken place is the best, and would you have chosen Big or Aiden in the SATC universe? In other news, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively have been all over social media with their respective films' press tours. Is Blake Lively a “crown straightener,” or was she mean to Leighton Meester in the Gossip Girl days? Speaking of cast feuds, what is going on with Justin Baldoni versus everyone else in It Ends With Us? He's almost suspiciously emotionally intelligent. Meanwhile, why didn't Ryan Reynolds acknowledge Matthew Macfadyen in any of his Deadpool & Wolverine posts? And why hasn't anyone except Aleen noticed? Then, Jordana and Aleen share their thoughts on the House of the Dragon finale (spoiler: Aleen is pissed), and Jordana catches Aleen and Sami up on all the RHONJ finale drama. Our Betch of the Week is Blake, and we're sending Luis Ruelas to the Caymans for saying he hopes Margaret Joseph's son suffers. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
