Send us a textNovember 29, 1864 dawned cold on the Colorado plains as Cheyenne and Arapaho families slept peacefully under an American flag—a gift promising protection. By nightfall, over 200 Native Americans lay dead in what would become one of the most shameful episodes in American history. The Sand Creek Massacre didn't happen in isolation. It grew from a toxic brew of broken treaties, gold rush fever, and political ambition. Once respected Cheyenne and Arapaho territories, recognized in the 1851 Treaty of Fort Laramie, were systematically stripped away as miners and settlers poured into Colorado. When tribes resisted this invasion, territorial officials seized their opportunity. Governor John Evans issued proclamations essentially authorizing the killing of any Native Americans, while Colonel John Chivington—a Methodist minister with political aspirations—assembled a regiment specifically to confront the "Indian problem."What makes this story particularly heartbreaking is that Chief Black Kettle and other peace-seeking leaders had been actively working with authorities, believing they were under military protection at Sand Creek. Instead, Chivington's troops unleashed unspeakable violence: women and children shot as they fled, bodies mutilated, scalps and body parts taken as souvenirs to be displayed in Denver theaters. As one witness testified: "It was hard to see little children on their knees have their brains beat out by men professing to be civilized."Though three federal investigations condemned the massacre in the strongest terms, justice remained elusive. Chivington escaped punishment by resigning his commission, while brave whistleblowers like Captain Silas Soule paid with their lives for speaking truth. The massacre transformed the American frontier, shattering trust between Native peoples and the government and igniting decades of intensified conflict across the plains.By exploring this difficult history, we confront uncomfortable truths about our nation's past and the human capacity for both cruelty and courage. Join us for Dr. Jeff Broom's upcoming presentation at the Dodge City Library on October 4th, where he'll examine the complex narratives surrounding this pivotal event through rigorous historical research and primary sources.Support the showIf you'd like to buy one or more of our fully illustrated dime novel publications, you can click the link I've included.
On today's episode, we speak with director Joe Wright whose new limited TV series Mussolini: Son of the Century, explores fascism through the early political career of Italy's Prime Minister Mussolini in the 1920s. The show is incredible storytelling from beginning to end, mixing opera and techno rave music while drawing chilling comparisons to the current rise of fascism around the world. “We all have a dark side. We all have the choice to be the best of ourselves, or the worst of ourselves and we usually land somewhere in the middle. Working on Mussolini allowed me the opportunity to look at my relationship with my own masculinity and it helped me understand the man I want to be,” says director Joe Wright about the way he personalized Benito Mussolini's story to make it more accessible to a modern audience, adding, “I wanted the audience to be at times seduced by him, and then in a Brechtian sense, to kind of pull the rug from underneath their feet, and ask them to apply some critical distance.” Wright also discusses what he learned about storytelling growing up with his parent's puppet theater, his early films like Pride and Prejudice, and dealing with his own self-doubts as a filmmaker by making a movie about Winston Churchill called Darkest Hour. “Darkest Hour is a movie about doubt. When I made that movie, I just made a movie called Pan, which the critics hated and lost a huge amount of money. I was sort of consumed afterwards by self-doubt. I was thinking, what have I got to say? I can't reach audiences anymore, I'm out of step. So, then the opportunity came along to do Darkest Hour, and I immediately perceived it as a story about a little man who was consumed by self-doubt, and who was doubted by others all around him. Yet he persevered and overcame enormous odds to lead a nation at their darkest hour. So, for me, that became a story worth telling,” says Wright. To hear more, listen to the podcast.
This is a rebroadcast of ep. 194In this episode of Libertarians Talk Psychology, Julie and Mike take a deep dive into the film Darkest Hour, starring Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill, set in the tense days before the Nazi invasion of the United Kingdom during World War II. We touch on related themes such as Rand Paul's independent thinking, the impact of masking requirements on public debate, and the role of YouTube in shaping political and cultural discourse. If you're interested in psychology, politics, history, and how diverse minds can solve complex problems, this episode offers a unique libertarian perspective on one of the most powerful historical dramas of recent years.Follow Us:YouTubeTwitterFacebookBlueskyAll audio & videos edited by: Jay Prescott Videography

Jesus has been tried, convicted, and sent to be crucified. It is there on the cross that Jesus will face His darkest hour, and bear the sin of the world. From this we learn two important lessons: the just will come by faith, and the just will live by faith. We talk about it together.
In this episode, Joel shares his compelling journey from serving as a political consultant and novelist to making aliyah with his family and residing in Israel. He discusses the October 7th terror attacks, analyzing them not solely as acts of warfare but also as profoundly spiritual, demonic-inspired events. Joel examines the biblical significance of Gaza, contemplating both its history of judgment and God’s persistent love for all inhabitants of the region, including Israelis and Palestinians. Listeners will also be encouraged to join in fervent prayer for all those suffering in the region, along with insights from Scripture regarding Gaza's future. SEASON 2 - EPISODE 148 - Pulling a Film Together - with Paula McGann In this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with Paula McGann (1917, DARKEST HOUR, MIDNIGHT SKY). We had the pleasure of working with Paula on 1917, and we asked her to come on the podcast to discuss the work that goes into pulling a film together nowadays. Paula—after years of working for directors, producers, and in several departments on numerous films—has recently begun producing herself, and with several projects in various stages of development, we thought her perspective would be valuable to hear and share. Paula teaches us what the film marketplace actually is, and we explore several hypothetical situations such as breaking down a script without a director's vision and handling a financier's creatively disruptive note. Paula also shares an experience in which a project was taken away from her, and we discuss practicing resilience in a business of ups and downs. Throughout the episode, we discuss mentors, budgeting, sales agents, putting yourself out there, and finding your own way in the business. - This episode is sponsored by Profoto & Aputure

Volgende week: Kysia Hekster, EU-correspondent. The single had peaked at No. 4 on the US singles chart. In the UK Atlantic Records had expected to issue the edited version themselves, and pressed initial copies for release on 5th December 1969. However, band manager Peter Grant was adamant that the band maintain a 'no-singles' approach to marketing their recorded music in the UK, and he halted the release. 1972 - The Electric Light Orchestra made their debut at The Fox and Greyhound in Croydon, London. ELO were formed to accommodate former Move members Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne's desire to create modern rock and pop songs with classical overtones.
