The Irish novelist has always been open to where life can unexpectedly take him, and the excitement that comes with that kind of freedom.Colm Toibin's first big move was from rural Ireland to Dublin after his father died when he was young. Then, it was off to experience the wild hedonism and sexual liberation of post-Franco Spain, a pleasant shock after needing a prescription to buy condoms in Ireland.Since then, he's journeyed to Sudan, Los Angeles, New York and beyond.Wherever Colm goes, he keeps a running list in his head of tiny details — observations of seemingly mundane encounters, an offhand comment or the cut of a lady's suit on a train.Every now and then, these details bubble up in Colm's memory and another of his well-loved novels, like Brooklyn, Nora Webster or The Master, is born. This episode was produced by Meggie Morris. Written and directed by Alex Garland in his directorial debut, Ex Machina is the science fiction film starring Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander, and Oscar Isaac. Rob and Jason rewind to the year 2015 to review the decade old movie that has only just become more relevant with time. Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson) a programmer at a huge Internet company, wins a contest that enables him to spend a week at the private estate of Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac), his firm's brilliant CEO. When he arrives, Caleb learns that he has been chosen to be the human component in a Turing test to determine the capabilities and consciousness of Ava (Alicia Vikander), a beautiful robot. However, it soon becomes evident that Ava is far more self-aware and deceptive than either man imagined.
Synthetic Sexuality: Alex Garland's Ex Machina AI continues to hold our fascination. This week Mr. Chavez & I dive into Alex Garland's examination of Artificial Intelligence with 2014s Ex Machina. Set, as Garland describes, "Ten minutes from now," Ex Machina is a fascinating film with exceptional performances from Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, and Alicia Vikander. Few films are able to capture the subtleties and realities of science fiction paranoia with this level of skill. As these talks have continued over the last few episodes, the paranoia is becoming greater as the realities of our world begin to live up to predictions. Garland does creative and powerful work; asking questions and presenting situations that seem to be more likely than simple imagination. Dana and Tom with 5x Club Member, Shane Rogers (Comedian and Host of Midnight Facts for Insomniacs) discuss the sci-fi thriller, Ex Machina (2015): written and directed by Alex Garland, cinematography by Rob Hardy, music by Geoff Barrow and Ben Salisbury, starring Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, and Alicia Vikander.Plot Summary: Ex Machina is a cerebral sci-fi thriller written and directed by Alex Garland. The story follows Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), a young programmer who wins a company contest to spend a week at the secluded estate of his reclusive boss, Nathan (Oscar Isaac), a brilliant but eccentric tech CEO. Upon arrival, Caleb learns he has been selected to participate in a Turing test for Ava (Alicia Vikander), an advanced AI housed in a humanoid robot. As Caleb interacts with Ava, he becomes emotionally entangled with her, questioning whether she truly possesses consciousness—or if he is being manipulated. Meanwhile, Nathan's true motives remain elusive, and the line between man, machine, and deception blurs in a tense psychological battle that builds to a chilling climax.Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome Back Shane06:30 Relationship(s) to Ex Machina09:53 Did You Like the Film?18:37 What Did Ex Machina Get Right and Wrong About AI?25:15 Plot Summary for Ex Machina26:23 Did You Know?27:44 First Break28:21 What's Happening with Shane Rogers?29:41 Best Performance(s)48:35 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)56:53 Second Break57:32 In Memoriam01:02:58 Best/Funniest Lines01:05:49 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:12:01 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:15:00 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty01:24:08 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:27:00 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:28:11 Remaining Questions01:33:22 Thank You to Shane and Remaining Thoughts01:37:16 CreditsGuest:Shane RogersComedian and Host of Midnight Facts for InsomniacsPreviously on Broadcast News (1987), The Big Lebowski (1998), Superman: The Movie (1978), There's Something About Mary (1998), This Is Spinal Tap (1984).You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast).For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/ex-machina-2015-ft-shane-rogersFor the entire rankings list so far, go to:

Welcome to another episode of Death Don't Do Fiction, the AIPT Movies podcast! The podcast about the enduring legacy of our favorite movies! This February we're celebrating “Dreddruary,” where we cover movies based on the British comic book character, Judge Dredd! In this week's episode, Alex, Tim, and Matt discuss Karl Urban's 2012 dark dystopian action massacre, Dredd!Impressive use of a low budget! A near-future that seems (unfortunately) believable! Quick and effective world-building! Really cool helmets! A very dangerous atrium! A simple, contained story inspired by the action classic, The Raid! A surprisingly stripped-down comic book movie, especially when compared with modern examples! Absolutely brutal slow motion violence! Absurdly large buildings! A solid cast that includes Olivia Thirlby, Wood Harris, Harry Potter's Domhnall Gleeson with blue cyber eyes, an uncomfortably cruel Lena Headey, and the lower half of Karl Urban's face doing some of the greatest frown-acting you've ever seen! A movie based on a British comic book about America, starring European people doing American accents, which may also secretly be the first movie directed by Civil War's Alex Garland! In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on The Wolf of Snow Hollow, the new Valentine's Day-themed slasher, Heart Eyes, and the genre-bending thriller Companion! You can find Death Don't Do Fiction on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts. As always, if you enjoy the podcast, be sure to leave us a positive rating, subscribe to the show, and tell your friends! The Death Don't Do Fiction podcast brings you the latest in movie news, reviews, and more! Hosted by supposed “industry vets,” Alex Harris, Tim Gardiner, and Matt Paul, the show gives you a peek behind the scenes from three filmmakers with oddly nonexistent filmographies. You can find Alex on Twitter, Bluesky, or Letterboxd @actionharris. Matt is a terrific artist that you can find on Instagram @no_wheres_ville. Tim can't be found on social media because he doesn't exist. This week we are time traveling back to 2013 for a rewatch of the movie, About Time starring Rachel McAdams and Domhnall Gleeson. This beautiful film checks all the boxes for us - it's cozy, it's sci-fiction, it's romantic. So if you haven't seen it or it's been a long time, we are going to convince you to rewatch this movie. Show Notes This week we go back in time to when AI was a remarkable step forward instead of a feature on all of our devices, whether we like it or not, with Alex Garland's Ex Machina. Oscar Isaac plays a billionaire that falls into all of the billionaire stereotypes that have proven true with the rise of Elon Musk: a self-proclaimed demi-god. Domhnall Gleeson plays a patsy for every other speaking character. Alicia Vikander plays – well, that's the question isn't it, what – or who – is she? I'm the Gringo who always podcasts - Dave pulls 2017's American Made off the shelf this week and enjoys the Tom Cruise-ness of it. There is an energy and performance style that takes up the whole frame when he is on screen. Phil finds the movie a little disjointed and ultimately disappoints by the time it ends despite some solid scenes. There is a problem with Domhnall Gleeson's hair and the voiceover (video cassette recordings) that is tough to get over. Dave questions the validity of the claim of "based on a true story"
In Episode 10 of Out To Get You, we are joined by Eisner Award-Winning Women Write About Comics' small press editor and writer, Kat Overland, to debug the soul of Alex Garland's 2014 psychological thriller, Ex Machina.Content Warning:This episode contains discussion of racism, medical/technological torture, slavery, colonialism, misogyny, dicks who have way too much money, and other topics that may be sensitive for listeners. In this episode, we discuss the terrifying onus of consciousness through the lens of technocratic overreach, the lie of the great man, and the horror of who pays the price for progress, in this slow burn sci-fi nightmare starring Alicia Vikander, Domhnall Gleeson, and Oscar Isaac. You can follow Kat on Bluesky, and check out more about her work, as well as Ex Machina: A (White) Feminist Parable for Our Time by J. It's the UConn Popcast, and Ex Machina, Alex Garland's 2014 sci fi movie, is a provocative examination of what an updated Turing test for a super-capable AI might look like, if the designer of the test was a megalomaniacal tech-mogul / genius. Colm Tóibín's not a fan of follow-ups so why has he written a sequel to his bestseller Brooklyn, which was made into a film starring Saoirse Ronan? He talks to Tom Sutcliffe about not overwriting sex - and how Domhnall Gleeson's screen performance as a "quiet Irishman" in Brooklyn inspired him. Miranda Rutter and Rob Harbron's new folk album, Bird Tunes, is inspired by birdsong they hear in woods in the Cotswolds. They perform a track on fiddle and concertina and talk about how manipulating the sounds made by blackbirds, wrens and cuckoos helped to inspire musical phrases in different keys. Photographer John Deakin is now often overlooked, but he chronicled the artistic underbelly of mid-century Soho with iconic pictures, including those used by Francis Bacon. Iain Sinclair, whose new book Pariah/Genius revives Deakin, retraces his footsteps around town. Presenter: Tom Sutcliffe Producer: Paula McGrath

Two-time Emmy-nominated actress and producer Sydney Sweeney has become one of the most sought-after talents of her generation, captivating global audiences with her many buzz-worthy, critically acclaimed, and iconic roles. Sweeney can most recently be seen starring opposite Glen Powell in Will Gluck's R-rated romantic comedy ANYONE BUT YOU, which broke box office records for the 2023 holiday season. She also recently made her highly anticipated debut as ‘Julia Carpenter' (aka Spider Woman) in Sony's Marvel universe alongside Dakota Johnson with the release of MADAME WEB. Sweeney will next be seen starring in the psychological horror film IMMACULATE for Black Bear Pictures, which she developed alongside producer David Bernad, following their highly successful collaboration on WHITE LOTUS. Now streaming on MAX, Sweeney's film REALITY marked her international film debut at the 2023 Berlinale Film Festival with the film's world premiere, where she played former US Airforce Translator and whistleblower Reality Winner. She is currently in production filming an upcoming survival thriller ‘EDEN.' Directed by Ron Howard, Sweeney will star in this film alongside Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, and Jude Law. Sweeney recently started production on the Apple Original Films' thriller ECHO VALLEY where she will also star opposite Julianne Moore and Domhnall Gleeson. As the standout character ‘Cassie' in HBO's EUPHORIA, Sweeney's exceptional work in Season 2 captured the attention of viewers, earning her a 2022 Emmy nomination for her performance in the category of “Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.” Prior to the second season of EUPHORIA, Sydney's name was on everyone's lips due to her turn as the seemingly woke millennial ‘Olivia' who dished out side-eye and microaggressions every chance she had in HBO's THE WHITE LOTUS. The inception of Sweeney's production company, Fifty-Fifty Films, came from the desire to reclaim professional autonomy by identifying and giving wind to projects she finds interesting, challenging, and relevant. Partnering with Jonathan Davino in 2019, Fifty-Fifty Films continues to remain focused on building impactful projects that are inclusive and purposeful. Currently in development as starring vehicles are THE PLAYER'S TABLE with Fifth Season, THE REGISTRATION for Sony Pictures, based on Madison Lawson's novel, with Fuller Media and THE CARETAKER for Universal Pictures, alongside Michael Bay and Brad Fuller for Platinum Dunes.

You'll have to have listened to last weeks' Pilot+ to hear our review of One Day but fear not if you didn't catch that, because stars Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall join us this week to discuss Netflix's adaptation of the hit David Nicholls book. And speaking of turbulent romances, Alice And Jack comes to Channel 4 this week and sees Domhnall Gleeson and Andrea Riseborough as a pair of star-crossed lovers. BBC1's Kin, on the other hand, sees an entirely different kind of turmoil as the Kinsella clan go to war (again), and Channel 5's Too Good To Be True explores the perils of unvetted employment (but does allow James to set up a terrible culinary pun). Finally, Kay's postbag management takes a turn for the meta and we look at side-eye references in your favourite shows.
We may not be reviewing it till next week but Alice And Jack is winging its way to screens very soon and stars Domhnall Gleeson and Andrea Riseborough — both of whom join us on the show this week to chat with Boydy. No one does awkward quite like Larry David so we're delighted to welcome him back to the screen for the 12th and final season of Curb Your Enthusiasm on Sky and Now. Plus Seth MacFarlane's Ted makes the transition to the small screen, we take a trip up north to see Scouse comedy G'wed, which lands on ITVX, and James nobly takes on the mantle of watching Halo season 2 so Kay doesn't have to get sci-fi on her.
Mother! (stylized as mother!) is a 2017 American fantasy drama[1] film written and directed by Darren Aronofsky, and starring Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, Domhnall Gleeson, Brian Gleeson, and Kristen Wiig. It follows a young woman whose tranquil life with her husband at their country home is disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious couple. In the burned-out remains of a large house, Him, an acclaimed poet struggling with writer's block, places a crystal object on a pedestal in his study, and the building morphs into a beautiful home in an edenic landscape. Mother, the poet's wife and muse, awakens in her bed and wonders aloud where He is. While renovating the house, she occasionally visualizes a beating heart within its walls. One day, a stranger called Man turns up at the house, claiming to be an orthopedic surgeon at the local hospital and asking for a room. Him readily agrees, and Mother reluctantly follows suit. Late that night, Man suffers from dry heaves and Mother observes a wound on his side. Man's wife, Woman, arrives the next day. Mother is increasingly frustrated by her guests, but Him begs her to let them stay, revealing that Man is actually a fan whose dying wish was to meet Him. However, when Man and Woman accidentally shatter the crystal object, which Him had forbidden them to touch, Him becomes angry and boards up his study. Mother tells Man and Woman to leave, but, before they can go, their two sons arrive unexpectedly and fight over Man's will. The oldest son, who is concerned about his impending inheritance, argues and fights with his younger brother, severely wounding him, and the older brother flees after having his head smashed against glass by Him, leaving a bloody gash in his head. Him, Man, and Woman take the injured son to the hospital. Alone in the house, Mother cleans up and notices strange damage to the house, including a fly, a frog, and blood that will not stop dripping. She follows the blood to a tank of heating oil hidden behind the basement walls. Upon returning, Him informs Mother the son has died. Mother and Him are roused that night when dozens of people arrive unannounced at the house to mourn the dead son. The visitors behave in rude and presumptuous ways that irritate Mother, and she snaps and orders everyone to leave when they break a sink, partially flooding the house. She berates Him for allowing so many people inside and ignoring her needs, but their argument leads to passionate lovemaking. The next morning, Mother announces she is pregnant, which elates Him and inspires him to start writing again. Time passes. Mother prepares for the arrival of the child and reads Him's beautiful new poem. Upon publication, it is acclaimed and sells well. In celebration, Mother prepares a big dinner, but a group of fans interrupt. Though she asks Him to send them away, he insists he has to be polite and show his appreciation. Mother tries to lock the doors, but droves of fans pour into the house and begin to wreak havoc, stealing things as souvenirs and damaging the house. Due to the adulation he is receiving, Him is oblivious to what is happening, but a disoriented Mother watches helplessly as military forces turn up to battle members of the cult that has sprung up around Him and as his publicist organizes mass executions. Mother goes into labor and finds Him, who reopens his study, which he had previously boarded up, so she can give birth inside. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/100horrors/message

Back To The Blockbuster is celebrating its two year anniversary and the team is ringing in the milestone by revisiting two films that each of the co-hosts once disliked. In one corner, Gaius didn't care for the 2017 film Mother!, when he first saw the film in theaters. Directed and written by Darren Aronofsky, the film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer, Domhnall Gleeson, Brian Gleeson, and Kirsten Wiig. In the film, a young woman finds her tranquil life with her husband at their country home is disrupted by the arrival of a mysterious couple. In the other corner is Jackson, who didn't care for the 2019 film, Us. Directed and written by Jordan Peele, the film stars Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, Shahadi Wright Joseph, and Evan Alex. In the film, a woman and her family are attacked by a group of menacing doppelgängers. Will their minds change all these years later on their respective films? Before finding out, the duo covers a bit of news, most notably the ongoing issues with Marvel and their respective movies and TV shows.

There's been a changing of the guard, a succession, if you will, in prestige TV (or whatever). In the span of five days, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ended after five seasons, Succession ended after four seasons, Barry ended after four seasons, and Ted Lasso (maybe? probably? seemingly?) ended after three seasons. Those four shows have been nominated for the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy or Drama Series a total of 12 times, and they've won those top awards five times. So far. I've spoken to many people in the film business over the years but today's guest is one of the hardest working craftsman I've had the pleasure of sitting down with. Today on the show we have screenwriter, producer and director, Mark L. Smith. If you look at his IMDB you'll see a list of 15 projects at various stages of development. He's come a long way from entering the Hollywood scene some 15 years ago with his fear-striking horror screenwriting and directorial debut, Séance in 2006.Read Mark L. Smith's ScreenplaysMark stumbled onto writing as a hobby during off-seasons at his family's ranch where he worked after college. Self-taught, some workshops and an inventory of specs later, his path crossed Mel Gibson's - who bought Smith's first-ever script written in 2001.From then onwards, he's been credited for successful writing and producing for hits like The Revenant (2015) and Overlord (2018) and The Midnight Sky which was just released in 2020, starring the incomparable, George Clooney. In Overload, a small group of American soldiers finds horror behind enemy lines on the eve of D-Day.While producing his directorial debut horror, film Séance, with friend of the show and veteran producer Suzanne Lyons, Smith was also a writer on Vacancy in 2006. You will hear more in the interview of his experience navigating the world of filmmaking on both sets, as a rookie, and the village of support he received.Vacancy follows the unfortunate adventure of a married couple who becomes stranded at an isolated motel and finds hidden video cameras in their room. They soon realize that unless they escape, they'll be the next victims of a snuff film. After Vacancy, many horror projects started to open up for Smith. He worked those for a while until it felt old and he had the urge to do something different. That's when he co-wrote the revisionist western script for The Revenant with legendary director, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu. The film was based in part on Michael Punke's 2002 novel by the same title. You can watch the remarkable Making of documentary of The Revenant here.Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Will Poulter, and Domhnall Gleeson, the story sets in the 1820s, where a frontiersman, Hugh Glass, sets out on a path of vengeance against those who left him for dead after a bear mauling. The twist and turns that caused delayed production of the film and its eventual success will pique your interest. The Revenant became an instant commercial and artistic success. It grossed $533 million worldwide, earned 11 Oscar nominations, 3 Golden Globe awards, and 5 BAFTA awardsMark recently wrote The Midnight Sky that released last year, starring George Clooney. It is a screen adaptation of Lily Brooks-Dalton's novel, ‘Goodmorning, Midnight' which is a post-apocalyptic tale that follows a lonely scientist in the Arctic, as he races to stop Sully and her fellow astronauts from returning home to a mysterious global catastrophe.I had an absolute ball speaking to Mark. He's one of the hardest working screenwriters in Hollywood. We discuss everything from The Revenant, genius-level tips on how to adapt a book to the screen to what it was like work with Quentin Tarantino on the Star Trek script that has yet to be made. If you pray, please pray to the Hollywood Gods that Mark and Quentin's Star Trek gangster film sees the light of day.Enjoy this conversation with Mark L. Smith.
