Adam Chase Rani and Christine Chen celebrate reaching 188 episodes of the Get Reelisms filmmaking podcast and reflect on nearly six to seven years of documenting their careers. They discuss recent Oscars results, including a tie and Sam Davis winning after their interview, and debate why genre films like Sinners may struggle for Best Picture despite winning Best Original Screenplay, while One Battle After Another wins Best Picture and PTA earns Best Director. They talk about attention spans, frustration with people assuming indie films are “on Netflix,” and Christine's behind-the-scenes photo from Shakespeare on the Range being featured in the Academy Museum, a milestone linked to early career growth. Christine shares her decision to pause First AD work to focus on directing, developing a sketch-based branded micro-series, and adapting to vertical content trends. Adam plugs his “Create Your Own Content” course on getreelisms.com.   Christine W. Chen is a Taiwanese American filmmaker, Academy member (Short Films Branch), and versatile producer, director, and writer known for bold, character-driven storytelling. Sam Davis on Making Oscar-Nominated Short ‘The Singers' Without a Script, Casting Viral Buskers, and Shooting on Film On Get Reelisms podcast episode 187, filmmakers Adam Chase Rani and Christine Chen interview Los Angeles–based filmmaker Sam Davis, who is campaigning his live-action short The Singers, nominated for an Academy Award and streaming on Netflix. Davis traces the project back 3–3.5 years to reading a George Saunders breakdown of a Russian short story, then adapting it into a modern bar-set film starring first-time actors found on social media, which took about 18 months to cast due to scam concerns and trust-building. He describes a documentary-influenced, unscripted approach with long improvised takes, constant sound recording, layered audio, and shooting on 35mm film for intentionality, while noting the costs of film and travel. The four-day shoot faced setbacks, including a lead dropping out two days prior. Davis discusses song selection, costume strategy, collaborating with a small crew, balancing documentary and narrative work, and developing future projects, including a long-term feature documentary.   About Christine W Chen: Christine W. Monica Brady has spent 26 years doing something that didn't exist when she started: honoring the people who make movie trailers. Co-founded with her sister Evelyn on a boat to Fort Sumter in 1999, the Golden Trailer Awards grew from a scrappy DGA screening room show (running on two Avids, fingers crossed) into the industry's premier celebration of trailer craft. In this episode, Monica traces the full arc of the GTAs, from a pre-broadband era when trailer editors were essentially invisible, to a show that now spans dozens of categories and serves as a genuine career launchpad for aspiring creatives. 5 Key Takeaways The GTAs were born out of necessity, not ambition. Monica and Evelyn weren't trying to build an institution. They were trying to find a trailer editor for their student film and couldn't. No directory, no resource, no awards show existed. So they created one. What was meant to "run on autopilot" is now 26 years in. The show evolves as the industry evolves. From 23 categories in 1999 (including one they couldn't even explain) to dedicated tracks for streaming series, video games, and social trailer bites, the GTAs have always followed the craft. Categories don't get added by committee — they get added when the industry shows up and says "we cut these like theatrical trailers." Music is the most powerful recall tool in the trailer editor's kit. Monica keeps coming back to music as the thread connecting memory, emotion, and ticket sales. Editors who also play instruments aren't a coincidence — music is math, and the pattern recognition required for both is the same muscle. The trailer industry is uniquely positioned for the AI era. Most industries are bracing for an onslaught of AI-generated content. Monica's case: who better to make sense of a flood of footage than people who have spent decades being handed raw material with no script, no direction, and a tight deadline? The trailer editor's core skill is exactly what the moment will demand. Standout Quotes "We sent out some applications, and the rest will run on autopilot. And 26 years later, you're looking at the autopilots." "Who but the trailer industry have had a decades-long start at taking nonsensical footage about a topic they know nothing about — no script, no direction — and crafting a story together?" "These trailer editors are artists. And that is one of the things that sets the human being apart from whatever's coming at us right now." "Everybody help each other. We're here a very short amount of time on this planet. Let's just make the most of it." erticals, Hustle, and the Future of Filmmaking (Get Reelisms Ep. 186) On Get Reelisms podcast episode 186, filmmakers Adam Chase Rani and Christine Chen discuss being exhausted but grateful for steady work while others in Austin and Texas struggle despite talk of bigger film tax incentives. They say vertical short-form productions are “single handedly saving Hollywood,” with money coming from markets including China, and Christine notes speaking Mandarin helps her communicate with clients as an AD and director. They describe overlapping AD prep across productions, constant schedule demands on rare days off, and how vertical work favors indie-style problem solvers over union workflows. They explain vertical monetization as “Farmville”-style gamification with addictive cliffhangers and paywalls per short episode, shaping soapy storytelling tropes, while also noting vertical framing can be visually strong. They mention Darren Aronofsky's AI film "On This Day, 1776" and briefly debate AI as a tool versus making full films with it, then preview an upcoming guest, Oscar-nominated short filmmaker Sam Davis ("The Singers" on Netflix).   Hosts: Adam Rani (@adamthechase)  & Christine Chen (@cchenmtf)  About Christine W Chen: Christine W. Laura describes feeling powerless as an actor and deciding to create her own work after living in Los Angeles for nearly three years, with wildfires raging and Trump newly inaugurated, leading her to write the script in a week and produce her first “real” film. They discuss designing the project around practical constraints (woods location, small cast, one day, limited costume changes) while still aiming big for the genre, and Laura's priority of creating a safe, fun set that strengthens relationships and took care of the team. Laura calls crowdfunding the hardest part, recounting constant posting, emotional strain, and mixed results despite support and a stranger's $1,000 pledge. How do the latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) and the American Heart Association (AHA) recommendations compare, and why do they differ? In this video, Dr. Bret Scher breaks down where these two major nutrition guidelines align, where they diverge, and what that means for your health. At the center of the conversation is a key question: should health be defined by a single lab marker, or by a broader view of metabolic function? In this video, you'll learn:Why LDL cholesterol is only one piece of cardiovascular riskWhy the two guidelines differ on saturated fat, red meat, and full-fat dairyThe role of markers like fasting insulin, triglycerides, HDL, and body compositionHow different dietary patterns influence metabolic health in different waysWhy recommendations around saturated fat and full-fat dairy remain controversialHow historical beliefs and evolving evidence shape nutrition guidelinesThis discussion also highlights a critical point: nutrition science is complex, and population-wide recommendations don't always translate clearly to individual health. While both organizations emphasize whole foods and reducing processed sugars and refined grains, the DGA reflects a growing recognition that there is more than one way to eat well, while the AHA continues to take a more prescriptive stance on saturated fat and animal-based foods.

Text Dr. Black your questions or comments. The 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans were released earlier this year and are generating a lot of dialogue. In spite of this, many people don't actually know what they are, who they're meant for, or how they're created. In this episode, I walk through what the Dietary Guidelines for Americans are, why they exist, and how they influence the food environment around us—from school meals to public health messaging. I compare the newest 2025–2030 guidelines to the previous version, explain the shift in visuals from MyPlate to the new "Real Food" pyramid, and highlight key themes that are driving the current debate. We'll take a closer look at what's changed, how the guidelines are meant to be used, and why they've sparked such strong reactions across healthcare, nutrition, and social media. Most importantly, I'll help you think about how to interpret the guidelines in a way that supports your health—without getting pulled into food wars or dietary extremes. To read the new DGA go to https://realfood.gov/For a side-by-side comparison of the old MyPlate graphic and the new Eat Real Food pyramid, see the show notes on the episode webpage here. If you enjoyed this episode, please take a moment to rate it, leave a review, and most importantly, share it with a friend!Don't forget to visit the show website and subscribe!  For resources related to a plant-based diet or if you struggle to afford healthy food for your family, please go to eatgreenswithdrblack.com/resources.Did you know you can send Dr. Black a Text? Have you seen the new 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and wondered if you should follow them? You may have seen talk about them on the news and social media, and don't know quite what to believe. The slogan of eating more ‘real foods' sounds good though, and the New Pyramid diagram seems to show that all foods - including butter, steak, whole milk and cheese – would be fine to eat and that we don't really need to worry about the amounts eaten. But DO we need to worry? And what about the recommendations about protein and nutritional adequacy issues in vegan and vegetarian diets?   Let's talk about this. In this episode, we'll take a deeper dive into the New Dietary Guidelines for Americans and look at 3 more KEY things you need to know about them, to inform your own health. "You're bombarded with all these messages. Try to think of the one that means the most to you. Is it your kid's health? Is it your health? Is it the environment? Is it nutrition? What resonates with you, and helps you make a shift you feel good about?" The Dietary Guidelines for Americans shape how a nation eats, but the science, politics, and industry forces behind them are rarely discussed. In this can't-miss episode, renowned nutrition scientist Dr. Christopher Gardner, Professor of Medicine at Stanford University and lead researcher of the Netflix Twin Experiment, pulls back the curtain on the latest update: how it was crafted, what's shifted, and where it diverges from the evidence. Dr. Gardner helps us separate fact from manipulation and noise, and offers practical, realistic takeaways for building a balanced, sustainable way of eating. What we discuss in this episode:  Dr. Gardner's experience working on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. What the dietary guidelines would look like if they strictly reflected current scientific evidence. The influence of the dairy and meat industries on the DGA. Ingredients and additives in processed foods that are designed to drive consumption. Tips for improving your diet. Research comparing Beyond Meat to pasture-raised organic red meat. How much vitamin B12 you actually need. Saturated fats in plant foods compared with saturated fats in animal products. The potential of diet to reverse harmful health patterns. There was a lot of anticipation leading up to last weekend's Directors Guild of America (DGA) awards, with Anderson and Ryan Coogler (Sinners) as the top contenders angling for that win, and with it came a good deal of Oscar pundit skittishness and squirming. Although most had acquiesced to the reality that Anderson was going to be the likely winner, the fact that no Black director had ever won DGA in its 77 years (78 now) gave some of them enough to hold onto a chance of it happening, and for a momentum switch from One Battle to Sinners begin to emerge. It didn't happen, and Producers Guild of America (PGA) voting ended days before the DGA Awards so those votes are locked in too. We won't know those results for almost another three weeks. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. You can also listen to it on our AwardsWatch YouTube page. This podcast runs 1h. We will be back soon with an Oscar retrospective for the 74th Academy Awards, covering the films of 2001. Till then, let's get into it. Music: "Modern Fashion" from AShamaleuvmusic (intro), "B-3" from BoxCat Games Nameless: The Hackers RPG Soundtrack (outro).

PRE-ORDER the upcoming book now: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/the-bookThe new Food Pyramid is released in the United States, turning the old one on its point. Regardless of how you feel about the administration it is released under, the focus has shifted from carbs and demonizing fats to centering protein, vegetables, nuts, beans and healthy fats. Camille reminds us that it is a guideline, not a hard and fast rule, because diverse bodies have diverse needs. And, she reminds us, science is always evolving, and should be questioned, so this will not be the last food pyramid. Luis is excited about the shift because so many illnesses, such as diabetes, high cholesterol, anxiety and cognitive decline can be traced to excess glucose, a byproduct of all those refined cards we were told to eat in the old mythology (funded by cigarette companies). All those ultra processed foods leave us with less macro-nutrients, therefore less nourished, and with less GLP1 in the body telling us when are a satiated. At first glance eating a balanced whole foods diet might seem more expensive, but considering long term health consequences and quality of life impacts, the balanced approach is economical. Gleefully, beans hold rank in the new pyramid. Luis and Camille indulge some excitement over this point. They also discuss grass-fed versus mass produced meat, what they think of the inclusion of dairy, and the proportions that are recommended. Dive in to geek out with Luis and Camille as they explore this new dietary recommendation. You can view the updated Food Pyramid PDF here: https://cdn.realfood.gov/DGA.pdfYou can register for the FREE Food Therapy session here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/events/nutrition-for-your-kids You can read more about, and register for, Camille's Embodying My Cycles & Rhythms 6-month group here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/cycles-and-rhythms-slow-group You can read more about, and register for, the retreat at Blue Spirit Costa Rica here: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/blue-spirit----You can learn more on the website: https://www.holisticlifenavigation.com/ You can follow Luis on Instagram @holistic.life.navigationQuestions? Evans were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and Reiner was nominated for the Golden Globe and DGA awards for this adaptation of Stephen King's 1982 novella, The Body. Wil Wheaton stars as 12-year-old Gordie Lachance, a boy in Castle Rock, Oregon in 1959. Along with his friends Chris (River Phoenix), Teddy (Corey Feldman), and Vern (Jerry O'Connell), the boys set off into the Oregon forest in search of the body of a missing boy. The film also stars Richard Dreyfuss as narrator and adult Gordie, as well as Kiefer Sutherland, Marshall Bell, Frances Lee McCain, and John Cusack. We will deeply miss Rob Reiner.

After attending the Critics Choice Awards last weekend, we turn our eyes to our first major bite of the top guilds in the industry: the Screen Actors Guild, Directors Guild and Producers Guild, who will all be announcing their nominations this week. While we intersect a lot as a foursome, each of us have outliers and potential spoilers to mix things up. Next, we look at the Golden Globes, the second televised awards show of the season and where they will go. Will it be a One Battle After Another sweep? Can Sinners find love? How will the international films fare and can Hamnet rebound outside of Jessie Buckley? All will be told soon...
