Angela Santomero is also an author, and one I had the chance to work with very closely over the past two years, as she asked me to be her co-author for her new book Preschool Clues: Raising Smart, Inspired, and Engaged Kids in a Screen-Filled World, which comes out one week from today! Preschool Clues shares the secret sauce behind Angela's shows' powerful, transformative results in the form of eleven research-based, foundational “clues” to ensure that preschoolers flourish academically, socially, and emotionally during this critical time.In this episode, Angela and I talk about the book—what it's about, who it's for, and how it supports parents in parenting their preschoolers and beyond. Though the book isn't written specifically for an audience of parents raising differently wired kids, the “clues” we share are relevant for any parent of any child. And the bonus? I was able to bring my unique lens as the mother of an atypical kid to the project, and so we took special care to ensure the book is inclusive of every type of child. Angela Santomero is the creator of many preschool TV shows including Blue's Clues, Super Why, Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, Creative Galaxy, and Wishenpoof, and was the host of The Parent Show with Angela Santomero on PBS. She has a Master's degree in Child Developmental Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University with a sub-concentration in Instructional Technology and Media. Growing up, I vividly remember watching fun, educational programming with my younger sister like Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow, 3-2-1 Contact, and Mister Roger’s Neighborhood. The common thread was that these shows were wholesome and enriching. Today’s interview is with media trailblazer and pioneer in children’s programming, Angela Santomero. Joan Rogers, wife of the late Fred Rogers, says “Angela is carrying on Fred’s legacy with her work in children’s media - a modern day Fred Rogers.” Angela C. Santomero, Creator & Executive Producer of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Blue's Clues, Wishenpoof, Creative Galaxy & Super Why has been changing the way children watch TV for more than twenty years. She is the Creator, Executive Producer and Writer for award winning kids and family content for PBS, Nickelodeon, Amazon Studios, etc. With a Masters in Child Developmental Psychology from Columbia University-Teacher’s College, Angela's vision for integrating educational curriculum into entertaining content for kids led her to co-create, executive produce and head write Nick Jr. 's landmark series, Blue’s Clues. Malcolm Gladwell referred to Blue’s Clues as "One of the stickiest TV shows EVER made”, in The Tipping Point. Angela is the recipient of the prestigious Peabody Award for Outstanding Childrenʹs Programming as well as several gold and silver Parents’ Choice Awards. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood was awarded an Emmy for Outstanding Preschool Children’s Animated Series at the 2019 Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards. Ms. Santomero's book PRESCHOOL CLUES: Raising Smart, Inspired, and Engaged Kids in a Screen-Filled World (Touchstone) was released April 2018. Her second book RADICAL KINDNESS: The Life Changing Power of Giving and Receiving was released in 2019. The talk was all about asking questions and this is the quote I included Angela in that talk: "I believe so strongly in the power of listening that it has been my underlying passion while creating high qulaity kids media. I include it in my shows for children through our interactive model in varying degrees. We pace our shows much slower and with pauses to let preschoolers think, from their thoughts, and answer back. Few believed that pausing on television would make such a different to preschoolers, but the positive results have been statistically proven. We have also heard from many adults that it has taught them, as well, to slow down and pause (listen) when they ask a question. Hurray!" Giveaway! Today’s episode, originally broadcast in late 2015, was super fun to record because I got out of my usual studio and hung out at what’s easily the most amazing playground I’ve ever seen. All of the equipment we see on a typical playground – huge climber, big slide, jungle gym – was gone, and in its place were loose pieces. Bricks, cement pavers, wooden siding, bales of hay, an 8 foot long rowboat, tree stumps suitable for sitting on or rolling around, a rain gutter with a hose near the top: these were some of the many things that replaced more typical playground equipment. It’s not a huge space, and today’s guest, nursery school director and owner Tanya Trainor of Miss Tanya’s Nursery School, knew that typical equipment would no longer work when, in spring of 2014, she found out that the fall zones required around each piece of equipment were expanding. So, Tanya and her staff did an amazing thing: they asked the children, “when we get rid of the climber out on the playground, what should we replace it with?” Their answers created the wonderful results spread out before me. Listen to this episode to discover: 1) how these playground changes brought about the wonderful improvement in children's behavior while outside 2) the children's contributions to this new outdoor play space, and the difference contributing has made in their feelings of autonomy and collaboration 3) the dramatic drop in frequency of negative behaviors; Tanya reports far fewer incidents of conflict or need for redirection since moving to the new kind of playground Go to weturnedoutokay.com/167 for key links and to listen – and have a happy Fourth of July!

Today's episode was super fun to record because I got out of my usual studio and hung out at what's easily the most amazing playground I've ever seen. All of the equipment we see on a typical playground – huge climber, big slide, jungle gym – was gone, and in its place were loose pieces. Bricks, cement pavers, wooden siding, bales of hay, an 8 foot long rowboat, tree stumps suitable for sitting on, or rolling around, a rain gutter with a hose near the top were some of the many things that replaced more typical playground equipment. So, Tanya and her staff did an amazing thing: they asked the children, "when we get rid of the climber out on the playground, what should we replace it with?" Their answers created the wonderful results spread out before me. Listen to hear more about: 1) the improvements in how the children relate to one another and play together in going from more conventional equipment to this new kind of playground 2) the dramatic drop in frequency of negative behaviors; Tanya reports far fewer incidents of conflict or need for redirection since moving to the new kind of playground 3) how engaged the children are in both the creation of this new outdoor play space and their use of it If you take just one thing from this episode, I hope it is this: play with "loose parts," as this kind of outdoor play equipment is called, is a critical part of every child's development and fosters all the important things that children will need to take into adulthood (social skills, problem-solving skills, creativity and curiosity.) Has your son or daughter's preschool adopted the loose parts philosophy yet?
