What kind of hijinks did you get up to as a kid? Did you climb trees? Did you run around outside barefoot? Did you eat raw cookie dough? Maybe you wanted to do these and other crazy things, but you weren't allowed… Let me ask you this: what if your children wanted to? Would you let them? If you hesitate there, well, you're in the right place. The We Turned Out Okay podcast is where we learn the hows and whys of hovering less and enjoying our young children more. You get to learn from host Karen Lock Kolp's mistakes, but especially from the successes of her guests. Each helpful, lively conversation illustrates why this show really is "The Modern Parent's Guide to Old-School Parenting."
Worry less and enjoy more in your parenting! Karen Lock Kolp shares practic

Listeners of The We Turned Out Okay Podcast that love the show mention:The We Turned Out Okay Podcast is an incredible resource for parents and anyone interested in understanding children better. Karen, the host, provides solid advice that is not only helpful for parenting but also has personal applications in various aspects of life. Her pleasant and uplifting tone makes listening to her episodes a joy. Even guest speaker episodes, which usually don't interest me, are interesting, fun, and helpful. Karen's podcast truly makes you feel like you can handle this parenting thing. I wish I had discovered it sooner!
What sets The We Turned Out Okay Podcast apart is Karen's ability to provide practical and down-to-earth advice based on her background in early childhood development and her experience as a mom. The topics discussed are relevant and helpful for raising young kids, and she even interviews experts to provide valuable insights. Furthermore, Karen has created an online parenting community called Ninja Parenting Community where parents can seek additional help with their questions. Her dedication to responding thoughtfully to questions shows her genuine passion for helping parents navigate the challenges of raising children.
However, one downside is that some listeners may be put off by the title of the podcast, as it seems to perpetuate the fallacy that certain negative experiences during childhood are harmless because "we turned out okay." It would be beneficial if Karen addressed this concern directly or provided further explanations on why she chose this title.
In conclusion, The We Turned Out Okay Podcast is a useful and encouraging series that empowers listeners while providing practical tips for parenting. Karen's expertise in early childhood development shines through in each episode, making it a valuable resource for anyone working with or raising children.

Hello friends! Settle in for a story! I'm taking you into an exciting development in my life as an artist: my first five-figure art commission.Listen for the story.. here in these show notes I'll give you: The brief answers to the questions I've been asked about thisThe five-step plan through which I brought it about. Before we jump in: Consider subscribing to this newsletter so that it shows up in your inbox, instead of you having to go search for it :)Questions I've Been AskedOkay! Here are the answers to the questions:1. Was this a scam? – No :) Instead of a scam the creation of this yuge art commission was an example of trust and commitment.2. How did you do this? How did you bring it about – did you advertise? Was it word-of-mouth? – The majority of today's episode is the story of how it happened. So I'll allow you to listen and enjoy that!It can be summed up in the following five points, so read on for the quickie version:How I Brought This About1. I cultivated creative enjoyment every day. For at least an hour at first, and then early this year I upped that to two hours per day of creative enjoyment.2. I asked. I mean this in a cosmic sense. I was open to the possibilities without understanding exactly how everything would happen, just knowing that something fun would happen. It always does!3. I gave and received trust "for no reason." I did this because generosity, enjoyment and trust are my defaults. They also happen to be wonderful in a professional, creative sense because people enjoy doing business with people they trust.4. I brought Kindhearted Purposeful Leadership – and commitment – to the process of envisioning and negotiating this commission. Click here to see the LinkedIn profile of my dear colleague and leadership partner in crime, Dr. Patricia Burlaud.5. Same as the first… I cultivated the daily practice of enjoyment. And that's your challenge. See below!Your Creative Challenge.. cultivate at least one hour each day this week of creative enjoyment. This is enjoyment where you're in solitude and you are not consuming but creating. Can be writing or art; can be cooking or dancing; can be walking or hiking or taking a bath or lying in a favorite spot looking out at the sky.Be bold and give yourself this gift! Remember… If I can do it, literally anyone can do it. :)Thank you for being here! Listening in today, and in the cosmic sense. Back when I did not have a clear understanding of the values that I held most dear, it's no coincidence that I didn't feel like a creator. It turns out: one of my most deeply held values is Freedom. I was not giving myself permission to feel like a creator. How do your most deeply held values align with your self, and your view of yourself as a creator?Today I'm taking you into an exercise that's helpful in those times when you feel like you could use a compass to stay centered amidst the disruption. Best of all – you provide the compass! It's in you.In the today's newsletter I share an exercise in two parts/2 questions:1. What are your (3 to 5) most deeply held values? What's most important to you, when are you at your most joyful? If it's challenging articulating your values… They'll show up in your responses to those two questions.2. How does what you create align with your values?I'd love to hear! Hello dear friends! I'm excited to share my conversation with a beloved coaching colleague, Heather Egginton. Heather joins us to discuss how it feels to be a millionaire! Recently, Heather's net worth topped $1 million. We discuss how that intersects with her feelings of worth inside herself. It's a fascinating conversation and Heather brings curiosity herself, inviting me to share about how I came to be writing a book about how it feels to be a millionaire. So for part of our conversation interviewer becomes interviewee! This conversation will show up in your inbox (if you're subscribed to this publication) or listen in your favorite podcast app! We'll return to the last few editions of season two's newsletter, about staying creative in disruptive times, next week.Happy Tuesday!About This SeriesThis is a podcast series within Art Creativity & Wellbeing and one that I'm excited to share. It's also research for my forthcoming book, How It Feels to be a Millionaire. I've become curious, as I've grown in this way myself, to understand how “worth” and “net worth”intersect for people living in our modern world.Sometimes millionaires do not feel like a million bucks.. Sometimes non-millionaires do. So, what are the commonalities and challenges? What is there to be learned here about myself, my fellow humans and our world? I'm excited to discover - and share - the answers and I know one thing, conversations like today's are an important part of how we get there. Hello friends! It's the second Thursday of the month and that means a great conversation with friend and and now-former colleague Andrew Moss regarding the tools that we developed together as I was training to solo hike across northern England in 2023.This one's about the tool that is really behind all the other tools: “I am not my thoughts.”In today's conversation you'll hear about how this idea has shaped each of our lives and how differently it has shown up for each of us. Andrew and I also each give you a way to try it out if you'd like!About the Series… It's really a podcast within a podcast! In these "Waking up: The Tools” conversations Andrew and I discuss the essential tools we developed that helped me transform my experience and grow into the person who hiked all by myself across northern England in 2023… After needing a wheelchair to go more than a few steps in 2011.FYI My hike was taking place exactly 2 years ago right now! To celebrate I am reading from my memoir, Waking Up, throughout May in a series of Instagram lives which you can access here. We've called this series Waking up: The Tools because they're featured in my book, Waking Up: How I Grew to Love My Body and My Self While Solo-Hiking Across Northern England (available everywhere you get your audiobooks and Amazon in paperback and e-book format.)Each Waking Up Tools Conversation is hosted by Pathfinders, the amazing platform that exists to amplify good people doing good work in the world. I'm so inspired each and every time I read this..”Dr. Miller's commitment to communication empowerment spans 25 plus years and has improved the lives of countless patients, as well as the over 300 novice speech-language pathologists she has trained. The daughter of first-generation educators, the value of education was instilled in her as a young person and continues to fuel her drive within her profession. It was within her household that she learned the significance of effective communication and how it could dictate the course of a person's life and livelihood.”Katrina shares with us what it's like to found an entire school within a university, how it all came about, and where this journey began for her. Hello friends! I hope March is starting off very well for you! What are you up to creatively?I see that I have been feeling better by creating.Late last year I decided to spend at least one hour per day in what I think of as "creative enjoyment." This is everything from taking a walk or hike – or over the last week or so, getting out to go skiing where I'm staying with my parents in the Colorado Rockies – to creating art, writing, making fun stuff! The rule has been that it's not about consuming somebody else's creations. It's about doing something creative from a place of enjoyment. Here's what I have been working on!This newsletter, Art Creativity & WellbeingA newsletter published in LinkedIn for leaders, The Heart of Leadership
Hello, friends, and welcome to Art, Creativity and Wellbeing!I'm really glad you're here!Today I'm sharing:* What I'm up to creatively * What's new here at Art Creativity & Wellbeing* My curiosity about what YOU'RE up to creatively :)One thing that's new!I decided to give everyone the opportunity to view everything, whatever your situation is, and regardless of whether you choose to support me or my work. I share out some information and I would love for that to be available for everyone who would like to read or watch it or listen to it. And then those of you who choose to support my work financially - that is so appreciated! It makes it possible for me to do what I do here. Here's the link if you would like to see more about ways you can support me.I'm really super grateful for it. And I feel so grateful for you free subscribing folks too. It's an honor to have you pay attention to my work and me, in whatever form that takes for you.Another new thing!Schedule change - I'm sharing our regular weekly newsletter each Tuesday, and then a video each month like today's about what I am working on currently.. read on if you'd like to see one project where my creative brain has gone in the last couple weeks! And a fun new publication.. the first edition was/will be printed in 2035!(If that's a bit confusing I do share more about this in the video.)Please share!Soooo.. that's me. Well, except for the changes to my podcast, which I forgot to share about in the video and which will keep until March!I'm curious, what are you up to creatively?I'd love to hear!See you tomorrow for our regularly scheduled newsletter!Love,KayArt Creativity & Wellbeing is a reader-supported publication. Hello my darlings! This is the final installment of our study of The Relationship Handbook: A Simple Guide to Satisfying Relationships by George Pransky, a super influential book for me personally, and (as we've gone along in this book study) a super helpful one for many of you as well. "The Law of the Universe is that you receive back that which you put your focus and attention on. So be very careful what you choose to put your focus and attention on.” – Coach Andrew Moss, in a mic drop moment that was essential in my training to become the person who solo-hiked across northern England in 2023 :)This week's Art creativity & well-being takes you into this tool a little bit deeper! And shares an experience that I had this past autumn which illustrated the law of the universe as nothing else could.I hope you enjoy this installment of our Autumn Curriculum! Greetings! In this module of our Autumn Curriculum – which, while ordinarily for the paid supporters, I'm sharing with everyone in case a tool for feeling okay inside might be helpful for you right now – is about becoming aware of the self talk within.I've heard this self talk referred to as the psyche, and my favorite term: the "inner roommate."However we think of this entity, it's good to be aware of because once we can observe, it means we can pause and respond rather than reacting to events in a knee-jerk way.I'm curious if you utilize this tool already? Or if you've got questions as you give it a try?I'm here if so.Sending you lots of hugs and positive energy, today and every day. Thank you for being here! If you think this might be useful for someone in your world, please feel free to share it with them.So much love,KayArt Creativity & Wellbeing is a reader-supported publication. Take 2! I apologize.. I meant for everyone to be able to see this one. So, trying again : )For our third installment of Art Creativity & Wellbeing's autumn curriculum I am taking you directly into the work that I do!Please note: We are using tarot cards todayTarot cards were originally a game created by Italian nobles 400 years ago. They are the origination of our modern day card decks with the four suits, the aces, the Jack, Queen and King, etc.I find tarot cards to be an outstanding coaching tool.I don't use them in a divinatory sense, like to tell the future. Instead they are very useful in helping someone CREATE the future that they would most like to bring about for themselves.Every October 31 now for several years, in my own deep work for myself, I have utilized tarot cards to reflect on what has been and to bring some curiosity to what is to come! You get to be present and witness as I do this today. The questions you'll hear me ask myself in this video are below. Feel free to get a cup of tea and snuggle up and watch this video as if it were a movie – or, play along! If you've got a tarot deck (or more than one : ) grab it and follow along with me. Or simply utilize the questions below to reflect for yourself on your own journey. Please share in the comments below, or by hitting "reply" if this landed in your inbox, what comes up for you!Okay! Here are the questions!1. What am I ready to let go of in my life?2. Where is my energy best dedicated?3. Where am I finding balance in the process of change?4. What is the fire that drives my expansion?(Good golly… THIS one.)5. What does divinity have to say about it all? Also this is the “turning point” in today's spread.6. What do I need to begin harvesting? (I substituted in the word "receiving" for harvesting.)7. How will my change fuel those around me?8 Guidance from my ancestors – a three parter!Ancestors on the Maternal, Paternal sides and the "Mighty Dead."This was a blast! And extremely helpful for me. There's lots of food for thought and now I am going into the evening looking at the cards and their relationships to each other as I reflect on what is here for me to remember and learn. So much love and a huge THANK YOU for being here!KayPS It's part of our autumn curriculum because of the "remember to use periods, not commas" tool that I have found super useful. Tarot cards do not leave room for commas. They are such a great coaching tool because they are objective. They have a message – different for each person and helpful, if we are paying attention – but there's no trying to talk a tarot card out of being what it is. In other words, no commas!Art Creativity & Wellbeing is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. If you are receiving this as a free subscriber, first of all, I appreciate you! If you'd enjoy more of the autumn curriculum, here's where you can become a paid supporter. Paid supporters, thank you for your support. It means a lot and it helps me bring you more of what's helpful. And fun!Thank you all for being with me on the journey. This is a public episode. Welcome to the second installment of our first ever book-read – we'll spend the rest of this year reading a book together! I've chosen The Relationship Handbook: A Simple Guide to Satisfying Relationships by George Pransky, a book that's been helpful for me in coaching and in my life. I share today about an experiment I tried recently that more than proves the adage that what we focus on grows – and it's interesting because I did not associate the challenges coming up for me (and boy did they multiply) with the experiment itself. So I kept plugging away and… Well, I share what happened in today's episode. We are talking about chapters 3, 4, and 5 – woo hoo! Hello friends! Bringing you something a little different this summer, bite-size episodes that you can enjoy with a little more frequency than usual. Over these next few episodes, you'll get to hear from my friend and former coach, Andrew Moss! We had the opportunity to sit down together in June in Washington DC. That's where my book tour took me, and it was such fun to meet Andrew in person while he was there as part of his sailing race around the world. Andrew suggested that we record a conversation together focused on my new book, Waking Up – since, as he shares somewhere in here, "we are two of the characters who show up with some frequency!" This is the fourth installment you'll get to hear - it is from the podcast that Andrew and I create together about his journey around the world, Where in the World is Andrew Moss? Hope you enjoy. Important note: I'm fine and the podcast is not ending! This episode's title was said - unironically, because that's who she is - by a beloved colleague of mine in her last-ever posting in social media. During today's episode you'll find out more about her. Also, friend-of-the-podcast Janine Halloran has invited me to be the guest expert in her wonderful Community Hub! Janine writes: "Kay's second book, Waking Up, is about her identity shift from a helicopter parent (living for everybody else) to becoming her whole, strong, unapologetic and true self. "We'll discuss our well-being and how much more supportive we are for others when we are in a place well-being ourselves. This is not easy to accomplish… We'll talk about what that could look like in our complex modern lives. "There will be time for Q&A at the end – join us live so you can ask Kay your questions!" Hi friends! I am SO excited to share this conversation with teacher, coach, and entrepreneur Gary Marcus Judge. Gary and I met when he invited me onto his show, BeWell - here's the link https://youtu.be/FmgIuUrsaEs?si=hwBOQsYrCUogm-Qi - to talk about "decision making from the heart." I am thrilled to share my conversation with Dr. Pamela Ellis today! Dr. Pamela goes deep in our conversation, sharing about early experiences and how they have shaped her into the person she is today… Someone truly passionate about getting helping young adults be on the path of their true choice. Enjoy! So much love, Kay Here's the link to Dr. Pamela's website… https://compasscollegeadvisory.com/ Here is our conversation on video: https://youtu.be/U6oer6q8Jio And I want to say thank you and share a story in these notes today. So here goes! Thank You Two years ago I began asking myself the question, “Who gets to decide if I'm an artist or not“ Lots of listeners and viewers of this show have supported me as I have seen that the answer is, “Me!” I get to decide. Now I joyfully share my art out with gratitude and love And that is what I receive back. Early on this art journey a friend and beloved colleague shook up my thinking When he shared his frustration with the “starving artist“ stereotype. I began dreaming about creating art and joyfully sharing it out… And what if that art could support me and my family? What a fun journey to be on I'm so grateful in my heart for all the support. And I'm offering that gratitude out in a sale! 50% savings on all my paintings now through November 30 So if you've had your eye on a Kay Or if you'd like to give the gift of my original fine art to loved ones Now is your opportunity Link is https://bit.ly/kayartsale2023 THANK YOU for helping me realize this dream With love, Kay
Hi friends, today I recorded a conversation with Frederick Buskey, an educator and author and podcaster who embodies leadership from the heart. The full interview will be out a little later in the year, but I wanted to share a part of it today in hopes it helps you navigate through challenging times. Frederick reminds us of an important, not complicated, thing we can do that really REALLY helps. And if I can be a support for you as you're going through something, please don't hesitate to reach out. So much love from me.
