Matthew and Riki welcome special guest Mandy Kaplan, comedian and host of the Make Me a Nerd podcast. They explore the journey of discovering nerd culture later in life, breaking down stereotypes about who gets to be a "nerd," and examining how mainstream and geek culture continue to merge in surprising ways. What defines someone as a "nerd" in today's culture?Mandy describes herself as a "mainstream mom" who loves Taylor Swift and Housewives but had always shied away from Star Wars, Star Trek, and other traditional nerd culture. Approaching 50, she decided to explore this world through her podcast, where guests introduce her to their favorite nerdy media. Matthew and Riki discuss how the definition of "nerd" has evolved, suggesting it's less about what you're interested in and more about how deeply you engage with it—whether that's creating charts about Star Trek planets or Top Chef recipes. How accessible should nerd media be to newcomers? The hosts discuss the balance between creating media for longtime fans versus welcoming newcomers. Mandy shares how she's learned to forgive herself for not understanding all the lore and background in some properties, instead focusing on the elements she can enjoy. They agree the best media works on multiple levels—like Sesame Street appealing to both children and adults—allowing both newcomers and devoted fans to find something meaningful. How has the perception of nerd culture changed over generations?Matthew reflects on growing up when nerds were socially ostracized, contrasting with today when Marvel movies dominate the box office. They discuss how the internet and streaming services have transformed nerd culture from niche to mainstream, creating communities for people who might not excel in traditional social settings. Riki points out how fantasy sports have bridged the traditional gap between "jocks" and "nerds."What unexpected connections do people find in nerd culture? The conversation highlights surprising moments of connection, like Mandy's encounter with a "Kardashian-looking" stranger who enthusiastically discussed the same fantasy novel she was reading. They explore how media that might seem designed for specific demographics often resonates across unexpected audiences when given a chance.Other topics discussed:The stigma attached to certain media and how it affects people's willingness to try new thingsHow streaming services have revolutionized access to niche contentThe philosophical and ethical questions embedded in science fiction and fantasyThe blurring lines between traditional "nerdy" activities and mainstream interestsThe gatekeeping sometimes found in fan communities and why it's problematicHow fantasy sports represent a form of nerdy engagement that's become widely acceptedShows like Severance and The Orville that surprised Mandy with their emotional depthThe Power of Curiosity Over JudgmentThe episode concludes with a reflection on approaching media with curiosity rather than judgment. Matthew quotes Ted Lasso's speech about being curious instead of judgmental, applying it to how we engage with different forms of entertainment. Mandy emphasizes how her podcast isn't about criticizing beloved franchises but finding what resonates personally, even in unexpected places. The hosts celebrate how nerd culture continues to expand and welcome new fans, creating connections across different interests and generations.Check out Mandy's podcast Make Me a Nerd, also on the TruStory FM podcast network. **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network. Today is Thanksgiving in the U.S., so I'm sharing a simple gratitude practice that you can do as a family, along with a guided gratitude meditation. What you focus on is what you create more of. When you focus on things that bring you joy and delight, you're going to feel better and more positive about your life. You'll Learn:Why your kid isn't wrong for wanting thingsHow to flip the wish list into a simple family gratitude practiceWhat I'm thankful forA guided meditation to bring more gratitude into your lifeGratitude is a powerful tool for feeling more content in your life. Instead of chasing after something new, better, different, more, we can learn to appreciate the things we have.-------------------------------------The Antidote to EntitlementIf you're reading this around the time it comes out, we're heading into the holiday season. If you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah or another gift-giving holiday, your kids probably have gifts on the brain. First, I want to remind you that this is normal. Kids naturally have a lot of desire. It's okay for them to want things and ask for things. It's also okay for them to not get those things and feel disappointed. But, if you've worried that your kid is going to be spoiled, entitled or always wanting, wanting, wanting…The antidote is gratitude. A Simple Family Gratitude PracticeThis gratitude practice is about being okay with desire, wants and the wish list. In fact, this exercise is kinda like a wish list in reverse. Challenge your kids (and yourself) to ask themselves…What are some things that you used to want that you now have?Look back on these things and take a moment to be grateful for them. It doesn't have to be formal, or even written down. Just start a conversation. You can use some of the prompts below to get you started:Do you remember what was on your wish list last year? Did you get it? Isn't it amazing that you used to want something, and now you have it? Do you still love it? Are you glad you have it? It doesn't have to be stuff. You can also express gratitude for an experience, relationship or opportunity. We're cultivating the ability to reflect and be thankful, challenging the brain to think of things in a slightly different way. This podcast was something I wanted for a long time. I am so thankful for you and for the opportunity to share the things I've learned. I'm grateful for my difficult experience as a mom because it allows me to connect with you and help make your life a little bit easier and more calm.If you want to listen to the guided meditation in the podcast recording, you can find it at [8:54].I wish you a joyful holiday and lots of love and gratitude in your life. Do you remember “roll over minutes”?You know, the concept from the 2000s where if you didn't use your entire monthly allotment of cell phone minutes, they rolled over to the next month?Today I want to introduce you to a similar concept:“Roll over behind” which is absolutely a thing for business owners.“Roll over behind” is where you carry over yesterday's, last week's, or last month's unfinished tasks and “behind” into a brand new day.How do you know if you're guilty of doing this? You wake up already feeling behind. Before your day even starts. And the worst part? There are only 3 reasons why this happens, which means you're just 3 quick fixes away from solving this problem for good.Listen and learn:The 3 reasons you get behind as a business ownerThe 60 second 2-step process to fix any/all of those 3 thingsHow to apply this simple framework outside of your biz so you can feel calm, relaxed and (mentally) spacious in all areas of your life instead of overwhelmed and guilty2 minutes a day.Never rolling over "behind".Enjoy!Connect with Andrea Nordling:

Today's episode is a personal reflection on an unexpected happening last weekend.I ended up having to have an emergency medical procedure at the weekend - it all sounds very dramatic and in the moment definitely felt that way. I am ok - 100% ok. But, as is the way with these things I've also seen that embedded within it there is much richness for reflection! Some key themes came up for me.How old stories can become activated when we're facing into difficult thingsHow easy it can be to muddle resilience with foolhardinessWhat it means to respond mindfully, kindfully to pain and acknowledge our need for restThe critical value of self-awareness - both IN the moment and ABOUT the momentGratitude for what is - and for remembering how things wereThis is a short one. A canter through some thoughts. I'd love to know what it sparks for you.Sending so much love, for whatever is showing up in your life.Join the mailing list & receive the mini-course '3 little acts of self-compassion', completely free https://hennyflynn.ck.page/6e83d0227eExplore Henny's coaching, books, retreats, courses & events https://www.hennyflynn.co.uk/

On this episode of In the Circle we delve into a profound question brought up by James—Why do we, as humans, engage in behaviors we know are harmful? It's clear that being human is challenging, and to cope, we sometimes find ourselves trapped in patterns of behavior that once served a purpose but eventually brought negative consequences. Our five senses allow us to experience unparalleled joys, from the music we hear to the food we taste. This pursuit of heightened experiences often causes imbalances, making us prone to addictions and unhealthy patterns. It's essential to recognize that we're driven by our body's inner chemistry. By understanding our hormonal and nervous systems, we can identify the underpinnings of our cravings, whether they stem from sugar imbalances or other impactful sensations.Addiction, as I see it, is any behavior that continues despite its detrimental effects. The solution lies in altering our nervous system's patterning, realigning with our body's inherent intelligence, and uncovering joy in ordinary moments.Tommy discusses:Why we crave dangerous and thrilling behaviorsHow we can change our nervous system patterningAre any of us really, truly, broken? How the food we consume greatly impacts our recovery journeysWhy we need to be content with life and find joy in the subtle thingsHow the endocrine and nervous system affects our bodiesFurther Links & ResourcesCatch a Meeting. Preschool Clues shares the secret sauce behind Angela's shows' powerful, transformative results in the form of eleven research-based, foundational “clues” to ensure that preschoolers flourish academically, socially, and emotionally during this critical time.In this episode, Angela and I talk about the book—what it's about, who it's for, and how it supports parents in parenting their preschoolers and beyond. Though the book isn't written specifically for an audience of parents raising differently wired kids, the “clues” we share are relevant for any parent of any child. And the bonus? I was able to bring my unique lens as the mother of an atypical kid to the project, and so we took special care to ensure the book is inclusive of every type of child. Angela Santomero is the creator of many preschool TV shows including Blue's Clues, Super Why, Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, Creative Galaxy, and Wishenpoof, and was the host of The Parent Show with Angela Santomero on PBS. Welcome to Episode 256 of Building My Legacy.Imagine if you could choose company leaders who you know would improve the financial performance of your business. In this podcast, Christopher Skinner talks about what he's discovered about how a company's stock price correlates with leadership behavior. Based on the widely accepted theory of seven different mindsets, he has found a way to analyze word patterns to uncover how people think and arrive at decisions.Christopher founded Stealth Dog Labs to answer one fundamental question: Why do great businesses stay great? His work can help you discover your top performers, innovators and next leaders so you can make better choices for board of director members and your leadership team as well as allocate your resources more effectively. So if you want to know:About a new way to look at hiring, developing and promoting employeesHow, when you acknowledge that people matter, it changes how you do thingsHow mindset is more important than resume for board of director membersWhy it's important to look at the entire ecosystem if you want the right leadership for your organizationAbout Christopher SkinnerChristopher Skinner, the founder and CEO of Stealth Dog Labs, is a mathematician and neuropsychologist. With expertise in technology, sales and marketing, Christopher invented proprietary software that quantifies how people think — thus catapulting companies into hyperdrive. This episode is a conversation with Dr. Miki Ben-Dor, a Paleoanthropologist at Tel Aviv University. His area of study examines the causal relationship between Paleolithic nutrition and human evolution. Figuring out what our ancestors ate can help inform us how we should eat in this day and age. Miki and I sat down to explore his findings on humans being much more adapted to eating meat than plants. Now I'm not against eating plants and Miki's findings dont claim that we should only be eating animal foods…but he has uncovered a lot of evidence that points to humans being meateaters for a great length of our evolution.Episode Overview:Human Trophic Level: Our position in the food chain compared to other living thingsHow our bodies are much more designed to utilize animal vs plant foods  for energyArcheological and ethnographic evidence for humans evolving as carnivoresHow we can look back to our evolution to inform what we should eat todayWhy hunting larger animals was the most energetically efficient for our ancestorsWhy hunting small animals and the search for fat might have caused us to grow larger brainsSupport the podcast via donations:https://www.patreon.com/poldiwielandhttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/yearofplentyDo you follow the podcast on social media yet?IG: https://www.instagram.com/poldiwieland/Twitter: https://twitter.com/theyearofplentyFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theyearofplenty/Sign up for the newsletter:www.theyearofplenty.comOr subscribe directly using your podcast app. The show is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts and many other platforms! Please rate and review the show in the Apple Podcast and Spotify apps.
