There are tons of life's clues scattered along your journey that reveal the way towards achieving happiness. And sometimes, they are found not in the adult's way of life but in the simple stories of children. Tim Jordan, MD chats with Angela Santomero, co-creator of the show Blue's Clues, who shares how adults can learn from observing and gathering clues from the lives of children. She explains how writing for kids for many years taught her about the importance of taking short pauses and how to avoid becoming shadow artists. Angela also explains the right approach to self-care as an adult and what can be learned from children in this regard.
Angela Santomero is also an author, and one I had the chance to work with very closely over the past two years, as she asked me to be her co-author for her new book Preschool Clues: Raising Smart, Inspired, and Engaged Kids in a Screen-Filled World, which comes out one week from today! Preschool Clues shares the secret sauce behind Angela's shows' powerful, transformative results in the form of eleven research-based, foundational “clues” to ensure that preschoolers flourish academically, socially, and emotionally during this critical time.In this episode, Angela and I talk about the book—what it's about, who it's for, and how it supports parents in parenting their preschoolers and beyond. Though the book isn't written specifically for an audience of parents raising differently wired kids, the “clues” we share are relevant for any parent of any child. And the bonus? I was able to bring my unique lens as the mother of an atypical kid to the project, and so we took special care to ensure the book is inclusive of every type of child. Angela Santomero is the creator of many preschool TV shows including Blue's Clues, Super Why, Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, Creative Galaxy, and Wishenpoof, and was the host of The Parent Show with Angela Santomero on PBS. She has a Master's degree in Child Developmental Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University with a sub-concentration in Instructional Technology and Media. The book is Demon Copperhead , the author is Barbara Kingsolver. That should be enough said. If you read it and don't come away thinking it is the best book you've read this year, it will be among the best. Her book is a prodigious feat on many levels. It is beautifully written. It gives you a sense of a part of America often ignored. It has wonderful characters. It is funny, and she writes it as a parallel to David Copperfield , Charles Dickens' most personal novel. She's a great writer and a great talker. Give a listen. Our bookstore this week is Rainy Day Books in Kansas City, where the state line runs right through the center of town. Growing up, I vividly remember watching fun, educational programming with my younger sister like Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow, 3-2-1 Contact, and Mister Roger’s Neighborhood. The common thread was that these shows were wholesome and enriching. Today’s interview is with media trailblazer and pioneer in children’s programming, Angela Santomero. Joan Rogers, wife of the late Fred Rogers, says “Angela is carrying on Fred’s legacy with her work in children’s media - a modern day Fred Rogers.” Angela C. Millions of parents all over the world use technology to help them raise (and manage) their kids. Smartphones, tablets, video games, and TV are all helpful part-time babysitters for parents—especially moms—because they enable a caregiver to actually step away and breathe for a minute. At what point does tech use become harmful for toddlers? Many educational experts suggest tots shouldn't have access to screens until they're around two years old—and even then, it's a limited amount of time they should be sitting in front of the TV or tablet. Other experts have different ideas, though. Angela Santomero, who co-created children's shows like Blue's Clues, Super Why, Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, and more wrote in her book that screens are beneficial for kids—in some formats, at least. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/georgiastalk/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/georgiastalk/support
If you and your kids love Blues Clues and Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood- listen to this episode and meet the creator and executive producer! Angela Santomero is so multi talented it's hard to attribute just one or two adjectives to her. But when I think of making a difference and contributing to a positive impact on children, I think of Angela.Angela began her career in the early 1990's at Nickelodeon. Her Talents were quickly and easily identified and she became executive producer and writer of the very popular kids show Blues Clues. When Fred Rogers died in 2003, "Kevin Morrison (CEO-Fred Rogers Co.) reached out to Angela and asked what show she would do to honor Fred's legacy". Her idea was an animated version of Fred Rogers' Neighborhood of Make Believe. This was the birth of the very popular Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood. Angela recently added "best selling author" to the list of credentials as the author of her new book, Radical Kindness. Hopefully we can all make a difference in other people's lives. Angela and the children's shows she creates, make an impact that will last a long time!

It’s been great to see so many of you following along with the #onekindsummer campaign on the pod. Last week we started the campaign with self-compassion. Let me know how you did with that. Today we are focusing on kindness toward those around you, which you may find easier, or even harder. A lot of what I’m referencing today is from Angela Santomero’s book called, “Radical Kindness: The Life-Changing Power of Giving and Receiving.” Deepak Chopra says in his foreword that the book “offers the practical means for experiencing what can be called kindness consciousness.” I love that! I’m on a 4-week break from posting interviews, but in the meantime I want to take a few minutes each week to think about how we can spread kindness this summer and beyond. I think we can all do with a bit more kindness in the world. This isn’t something more for your to-do list, and this isn’t something you need to do it perfectly. It’s just about showing up and being open if we choose to. So stay tuned if you’re interested. Interviews will resume on Tuesday, July 9th. See the full transcript HERE. This show is a labor of love for me, so I’d be grateful if you would rate or review it. Thank you!

I include it in my shows for children through our interactive model in varying degrees. We pace our shows much slower and with pauses to let preschoolers think, from their thoughts, and answer back.
