REAP Food Group calls the termination of the Local Food For Schools and Child Care program a “major blow” to Wisconsin. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is cutting two programs that provided about $1 billion in funding to schools and food banks to buy directly from local farms. That includes about $660 million this year for the Local Food for Schools program. Allison Pfaff Harris, Farm to School Director for REAP Food Group in Madison, says the termination is effective May 6. “The termination of the Local Food for Schools and Child Care (LFSCC) program is a major blow to not only schools and farms around Wisconsin, but schools and farms throughout the country,” she says. “Throughout my career, folks have asked me ‘How do we move local foods into schools?’. To me, it’s never been an issue of abundance or lack of interest by schools and farmers but a funding issue.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Series: Edible Schoolyards Episode Description: “School meals are part of the education day.” —Betsy Rosenbluth For far too long, the school lunchroom has been the butt of jokes and the source of dread for students and parents alike. Mention the words "cafeteria food" and visions of limp, gray mystery meat and rock-hard tater tots immediately come to mind. This pervasive stigma has reduced the lunchroom to a place where kids simply have to get through the meal as quickly as possible before rushing off to their next class. By changing the culture and elevating the dining experience, we can empower students to see the cafeteria as an extension of the classroom, where they can learn about nutrition, explore new flavors, and take pride in the food that fuels their growing bodies and minds. This week, we hear how we can transform the lunch room into a place of nourishment, community, and joy with Betsy Rosenbluth. Betsy is the Farm to School Director at Shelburne Farms, a nonprofit organization on a 1400-acre working farm in Vermont. For the past 10 years, Betsy has been spearheading efforts to expand farm-to-school programming across Vermont and support a national movement to transform the school food system. Stay tuned as Justine and Betsy talk about the importance of tailoring programs to local needs, overcoming supply chain challenges, empowering students to make informed choices about their food, the benefits of building partnerships, and how farm-to-school programs are inspiring long-term impacts. Connect with Betsy: Betsy is Co-Director of Vermont FEED, a nationally recognized farm-to-school partnership program of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Vermont and Shelburne Farms. Betsy also coordinates the Vermont Farm to School & Early Childhood Network and the Northeast Farm to School Collaborative and serves on the Advisory Board of the National Farm to School Network. Prior to joining Shelburne Farms, Betsy helped establish the Burlington School Food Project and Education for Sustainability programs in Burlington schools. She also helped Vermont FEED draft and pass Vermont's first Farm to School bill and grant program. She led the effort to create a Lake Champlain museum on Burlington's waterfront with a nationally recognized youth employment program. Most recently, Betsy was Director of Projects and Interim Director at the Orton Family Foundation with a focus on community planning, development, and engagement in small cities and towns. The story my guest will tell today is of her experience growing up and teaching in Memphis, Tennessee before finding a purpose-driven career change in - I am not joking - the heart of Transylvania. Emma Sisson is the School Director of The Mission School in Sighisoara, Romania. The work of The Mission, Romania is deeply rooted in the local community in Sighisoara and, as you'll hear Emma describe it, homebase is an 80,000 sq ft abandoned Soviet textile mill where staff live, work, house a K-3 school, and provide family wrap-around services to Romani children and families. Romani, or Roma, are a historically enslaved and oppressed underclass in Europe, in Romania in particular, where they are often slandered as a lazy, thieving, “gypsy” underclass. In 2022 the European Union reported that 80% of Roma live in poverty, compared to the 17% EU average. 1 in 5 live in households with no running water. 1 in 3 have no indoor toilet. And fewer than half of Roma children attend early childhood education. The scathing report prompted the EU director of Fundamental Human Rights to ask, “Why do Roma across Europe still face shocking levels of deprivation, marginalization, and discrimination?” Overcoming structural discrimination and prejudice against Roma people is a key part of The Mission's mission. The Mission School also works to preserve Roma values and language in the context of education, expressed as a preference for family apprenticeships, experiential hands-on learning, and a rich oral tradition, that have historically put them at odds with the priorities of institutional school-based literacies. On the other side of the Atlantic, The Mission international is currently recovering from a devastating fire that destroyed their entire campus headquarters in Tijuana, Mexico that served over 500 at-risk youth, so if you'd like to learn more and donate to help support Emma's work in Romania and rebuild the Tijuana campus, you can do that at themissioninc - that's the mission eye-enn-see - dot org https://www.themissioninc.org/ You can reach Emma @ emma.barbara.sisson@gmail.comAmazon Book WishlistAmazon Supplies Wishlist Hosted on Acast. In today's episode, I sit down and have a conversation with Logan Davis, a political consultant, researcher, and columnist for the Colorado Times Recorder. In essence, the interview delves deep into the politics of school boards, illuminating the intricate play of power, influence, and national agendas at the local level. Logan Davis brings his expertise to highlight how seemingly minor school board elections might have ramifications that go beyond the local community, potentially affecting the larger political landscape. This is a vitally important issue here in the Estes Valey, as the upcoming election will determine the future of our children's education. Some of the same players are involved and have connections to far-right politicians like Congresswoman Lauren Boebert – who ranks as one of the most extreme right-wing members of Congress.Davis has noticed an unsettling trend in local school boards, particularly in Woodland Park. The lack of comprehensive local press led Davis to concentrate on this area, resulting in significant coverage. He also explains that what happened in Woodland Park mirrors a national movement, where local school board elections have broader implications, with certain political groups using them as a springboard. The "Parents' Rights Movement," according to Davis, began as a way to keep conservative voters engaged after certain high-profile political moments like the Stop the Steal campaign post-2020 election. It began with a focus on critical race theory in Loudoun County, Virginia, and expanded to other issues like social-emotional learning and more. Davis believes that while the movement might have been "astroturfed" or artificially orchestrated at first, it has since taken on a life of its own, resonating with specific groups of parents. You can find his articles written on the subject for The Colorado Times Recorder (CTR) below: (I strongly suggest you read them all in order. Adam and Chad's high school director and physics teacher joins the show in our best episode yet. Mark Schnitzler, aka "Schnitz," somehow managed to convince a midwestern Catholic high school to allow him to direct the sex farce "Noises Off" in 1999. The 1982 play by Michael Frayne was the basis for the 1992 movie staring an incredible ensemble cast of Michael Caine, Carol Burnett, Christopher Reeve and John Ritter. Hear stories of how wild Adam and Chad were as teenagers straight from the man who had to deal with them on a daily basis. The secret? Channel their energy by focusing it on a creative project and allow them to have as much coffee as they want. < '00 | an Art House Empire Production | #LessThan2000Support the show
