Given the sad news last week of Ruggero Deodato's death, this seemed like a good reason to revisit the excellent FAB Press book Cannibal Holocaust and the Savage Cinema of Ruggero Deodato (affiliate link). In this episode you will also hear Adrian fail to be able to mention all the boobs in the book without giggling, because he is still twelve. We would love to hear from you if you have a favourite book on Italian cinema. This week we're so incredibly thrilled to chat with writer, director, festival programmer, The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies and otherwise multi-hyphenate Kier-La Janisse! Her debut feature as a director, the documentary Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror, premiered last year at SXSW and is currently on Shudder. Her book House of Psychotic Women: An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films is celebrating its 10 year anniversary with a newly updated edition that's available through Fab Press as a signed copy with a bonus CD right now and will also be available through regular bookstores starting tomorrow! We chat about her relationship to horror, her introduction to the genre as well as her writing and the Miskatonic Institute before digging into the Goldie Hawn/Chevy Chase film Foul Play. And while this is one of those nontraditional choices, her Scarred for Life story is one for the ages. We use that as a jumping off point to discuss the wild film. To celebrate the recent publication of the book Norman J. Warren: Gentleman of Terror, we invited Dr Adam Locks back on the show to discuss his memories of the much-missed British director. As co-author, Adrian has basically used this podcast as an excuse to plug his own book, but hey! If he doesn't, who else will? Laura is made to watch the sci-fi/ D.H. Lawrence mashup Prey (1977) but does find some redeeming features. If you would like to get your own copy of the book (and why wouldn't you?) it can be ordered from FAB Press if you are in the UK, Creepy*Images if you are in Europe, or Dream Haven Books in the US.Do get in touch with us via Twitter - @secondfeatures - or by email - secondfeaturespod@gmail.com - if you have any feedback or suggestions. We would love to hear from you! Please also leave us a rating and a review wherever you listen. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
