Philly-based Native Harrow have remained largely independent - musically, professionally, and aesthetically, since their beginning, meticulously crafting and perfecting a sound that is melded together from pieces of folk, soul, and rock n' roll. On 13th September, they release new album Divided Kind. This album is the lifetime's work of two scholars of music whose individual backgrounds in the arts have forged a strict artistic discipline that exists in sharp contrast to the more traditionally laissez-faire world of rock and popular music. Pre-save Divided Kind here. Over a catalogue of six albums, Native Harrow have produced a discography of “rich, engrossing records” and “instant classics” while single-mindedly following their own artistic code, acquiescing only to the exigence of the song: each song its own world with its own rules. Their original perspective and extraordinary songwriting, combined with a completely individual approach to crafting albums and steering their career, has garnered them coverage at Uncut, Mojo, The Guardian, Rolling Stone, The Line of Best Fit, Paste, American Songwriter, The Bluegrass Situation, Holler, Rough Trade, Telegraph, The Evening Standard, The Times, Shindig, The Sun, and many more. They've shared stages with legends including the Eagles, Robert Plant & Alison Kraus, and Beth Hart, as well as acts including Sierra Ferrell, The Heavy Heavy, Courtney Marie Andrews, The Cactus Blossoms, Great Lake Swimmers, Esme Patterson, and more. #Music #Interview #Albums

This interview on Backstage Sonoma features host Steve Roby in conversation with renowned Country guitarist and singer Junior Brown. The discussion highlights Brown's illustrious career, marked by the release of 12 studio albums and multiple hits on the Billboard Country Singles Charts. It begins with an overview of Brown's musical journey, including influences from television and radio icons of the 50s and 60s, such as Ernest Tubb, and shows like "Hullabaloo" and "Shindig." Brown delves into the creation of his iconic instrument, the Git Steel double-neck guitar, explaining its practical utility in allowing him to switch between electric and steel guitar seamlessly during performances. The talk transitions into Brown's songwriting process, where he emphasizes the importance of titles and hooks in crafting his lyrics, typically before melodies. “When I'm asked about songwriting, a title will practically write the song if it's a good title, and every line of the song must support it. And if it doesn't, then you're getting away from it. You're drifting.” Host Roby draws attention to Brown's famous live rendition of "Highway Patrol," a song by Red Simpson. This performance showcases Brown's ability to personalize and revitalize classic tunes. Memorable performances, such as playing with rock and roll legend Bo Diddley, are recounted enthusiastically, underscoring significant milestones in Brown's career. The interview also touches on collaborative experiences with country music legends like Ray Price, George Jones, and Hank Thompson, hinting at these encounters' profound impact on Brown. Looking ahead, Brown shares his vision for an innovative album blending surf music with his trademark "twangy" sound, inspired by a painting he created called "Git Steel Surfer." The interview wraps up with mutual appreciation and well-wishes for Brown's future endeavors. Overall, the interview is a compelling blend of nostalgia, technical insights, and forward-looking creativity, offering fans a deeper appreciation of Junior Brown's multifaceted artistry. Junior Brown's California tour will make three stops in the North Bay, starting August 14 at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley. On Friday, August 16, he plays at the Uptown Theatre in Napa and the Raven Theatre in Healdsburg for a show on Saturday, August 17. Ticket info here.

Special thanks to our newest and returning patrons: Laura Belle, Michelle Powers, James Regan 12:43 - THE STORY OF MYRA'S LAMENT FOR LAMLASH BAY I plagiarise songs into local events..the one I sang last night I wrote at 3 AM in the morning. My wife had been in hospital 100 miles away, for two months, and the chorus came to my head when I was feeling sorry for myself. Simultaneously, the Government had decided to ban us clamming in Lamlash Bay. I'd sustainably hand picked scallops there for 34 years. The trawler/dredgers were destroying the habitat, and they wanted to ban them. But they done us in as well… a Federal hammer to crack a wee nut!!!! So, the song is called “Myra's lament for Lamlash Bay”…Lamlash is at the Isle of Arran. Tommy Makem inspired my plagiarism with “The Boys from Killybegs.” Killybegs is a fishing port in Donegal, Ireland..Dun Na Gael…. The Fortress of the Stranger. Tommy famously sang and played banjo with the Glancy Brothers.. Sgheirs:- Gaelic..reefs pronounced “skerries. clams”:- generic term in Scotland for bivalve shellfish..we fish for scallops..Pecten maximus Sound:- navigable stretch of water between two pieces of land in this case formed by the Tarbert shore and Isle of Arran. Thole :- Lalands Scots (old Scots) my work they won't accept or tolerate. Dole:- Un-employment register Listen to the original version of the song on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast #85. Myra's Lament for Lamlash Bay lyrics Liam Griffin, music Marc Gunn There are scallops in the sea, put there for you and me By the Lord who reigns from heaven above. And the divers catch and sell, but we won't go to hell, We treat the sea with joy, respect and love. * There's a wild and rolling sea bringing me back home to ye. To yer bed that's dry and crisp and woman warm And our lovin' knows no harm when I hold ye in my arms. When the Boys from Lerags Glen come rollin' home. There are rocks upon the shore, There are sgheirs even more* And the trawlers they are dredging to and fro' But the diver's in the gully, for the seabed we don't sully Hand pickin' is the way I chose to go. But today the sea is calm and the boat is full of clams** And swiftly we have cleared KilBrannon Sound..*** Sacks of scallops stacked up high All our divers safe and dry And soon for Lerags Glen we're homeward bound. But now a new day's dawned and time is moving on and conservation is a game that they al play and my work the cannot thole and I'm told to sign the dole No more from Lerags Glen go to the sea. 23:37 - Marc Gunn “Myra's Lament for Lamlash Bay” from Come Adventure With Me 27:22 - CREDITS Thanks for listening to Pub Songs & Stories. In the first of our “Irish Libations” series, we welcome Michael McKillop, who branched out from the 36-year-old Glens of Antrim Potatoes business to launch Glens of Antrim Distillery with its Lir line of Irish Whiskeys, amidst bucolic surroundings in Cushendall, Northern Ireland. We get a professional's view of the growing, shipping, and marketing of Ireland's favorite crop, and how his company is taking on the potato crisp business with its Glens of Antrim and Shindig brands with creative new flavors (Roast Beef & Mustard!) and packaging, including boxes and 10-pound bags!We learn how he revived the Lumper, the potato variety associated with the crop failure of “Black 47,” and how his Lumpers entered the curriculum of schools across the island in lessons about An Gorta Mor.Knowing it would be a gamble, Michael rolled the dice in creating his line of whiskey, with Green Crest, Red Crest, and Black Crest versions of his Lir brand, a labor of love, a tribute to his family's heritage, and to the stunning Glens of Antrim region. He rolled the dice again in planning a new distillery to strengthen the company's ties with the local community, create job opportunities in the area, and launch a new tourist destination. A handsome structure it will be, and after a long journey the project got the go-ahead just after we recorded this episode.Michael shares stories of why he hates sheep, his adventures delivering potatoes with his father around Northern Ireland, the business reasons for moving into whiskey, the challenges of launching a distillery, why he's committing to pot-still whiskey, and the benefits of the founders' cask trade. We wrap with a wee, warming, amber dram of Lir Green Crest. THE ARWEN LEWIS SHOW - Featuring David Bash Today Arwen welcomes David Bash, Founder of the International Pop Overthrow Festival! As a youth in the early 1970s, David Bash knew he had caught the pop music bug when he found himself unable to sleep each Christmas Eve, as he anxiously awaited the broadcast of the WABC Top 100 the next morning. By the end of that decade Bash had amassed a record collection of more than 3,000 items, and though it's since been mostly converted to CDs, the collection has never stopped growing. In the '80s Bash received a B.A. in Journalism from New York University and a Masters in Psychology from the University of California, Irvine. Although he taught Psychology at several community colleges throughout the '90s the journalism muse continued to beckon, and in 1995 he began writing CD reviews for Yellow Pills magazine and Audities magazine. Since then Bash has written reviews and articles for magazines such as Amplifier, Bucketfull of Brains, Discoveries, Goldmine, Shindig, Ugly Things and Entertainment Today, as well as liner notes for several CD releases. In August of 1998 Bash founded the International Pop Overthrow Festival In Los Angeles. Since that time IPO, as it's affectionately been labeled, has taken place in several cities across the U.S. and Canada, as well as in Liverpool (at the World Famous Cavern Club), Stockholm, and Copenhagen! The aim of International Pop Overthrow was and always will be to create positive exposure for every artist who participates, to create a nurturing, cooperative environment between the musicians and their fans, and to bring pop music, as those of us associated with the festival define the term, to the hearts and minds of the mainstream public. www.InternationalPopOverthrowFestival.com The Arwen Lewis Show Host | Arwen Lewis Executive Producer | Jeremiah D.
