As the world turns and the Division Preview Series moves on, Jenny, Conor and Gary turn their attention to the NFC South, home of the defending Super Bowl champions, the NFL's strangest QB situation, the most challenging reclamation project in the league, and… also the Falcons. Just how good was the Bucs offense last season? And if the answer is “not as good as you remember it being,” can we expect this year's edition to be better than last year's champions? Jameis? Taysom? Ian? Who should start at quarterback for the Saints this fall, and what does Sean Payton have to do to keep this team on top? A discussion of what the Panthers can hope for from Sam Darnold and from an intriguing young defense, and whether the Falcons—who consider themselves to be in “win-now” mode—should truly be in “win-now” mode. Also, an official end to the term “quarterback whisperer”—you are banned from using it—our weekly Mad Libs, predicted order of finish and more! Have a question for a future mailbag? We speak to the one-and-only Dr. Cornel West about the professional consequences of his advocacy Palestine, his tenure battle with Harvard, and what he makes of the gap between the media response to his case versus Nikole Hannah-Jones's tenure battle. How does the silence or complicity of the Black media elite obstruct progress by manufacturing consent for neoliberalism? And how does a flat, racially essentialist understanding who the "good guy" is make progressive advocacy more difficult, from BLM to Gaza? But first, Brie and Virgil discuss what Biden should have accomplished by George Floyd's anniversary using executive orders, the waning sympathy for Palestine, and what the two have in common. When it comes to gender binaries, there’s a lot of digging to do to get to the root of our problems. And while there are a lot of ways to uproot a plant-- it really depends on how much it’s grown, how tightly its roots are wound, how far its system has spread and embedded its tendrils into the ground-- that determines how challenging it is to get it out.Nick Albritton, a transgender man and outdoorsperson, spends a good deal of time unpacking specific ways he’s seen gender binaries show up all throughout his life, and the damage they can do-- especially to transgender folks and those who are gender nonbinary. He also shares about the way nature has quite literally saved his life and helped give him the space he needs to dig deeper into what it means to truly be himself.Featured in this Episode:Nick AlbrittonInstagram: @boyrevelryRead this post from Nick about desire, trans identity, and cis normsAdditional Resources:Take the Sex Outside Community Survey and be entered to win a Sex Outside prize pack, as well as receive a discount code for 10% off the Sex Outside sticker shop!About our Sponsor:Janji aims to explore, connect, and give back by crafting comfortable, responsibly-produced running apparel guided by the places we run and the people we meet.Get 15% off your next order of Janji with code SEXOUTSIDE at checkoutLet’s be friends:We want you to be a part of the Sex Outside community!Find Sex Outside on Instagram! @sexoutsidepodCheck out what we’ve saved for you on PinterestWant to support Sex Outside?Leave a 5-star review in Apple Podcasts or the app of your choosing!Head to the Sex Outside Shop to find stickers, shirts, and underwear!Need a transcript for this episode? With all of the romance, lust, mystery, and occasional danger folded into nearly every mermaid tale, it’s somewhat easy to explain our fixation on these characters. But where the stories ensnare us all is in how one-dimensional they can be, especially when it comes to surface level mermaid archetypes, which are often full of hyper-sexualization, body image expectations, and heteronormative gender roles. Any of us who love going outdoors are comfortable with being prepared in the face of the unexpected. Alexandra Gabrielle, an entrepreneur and outdoorswoman, is certainly no exception. And when something unexpected happened this past winter-- an unplanned pregnancy-- Alex was put to the test in navigating unknowns to determine what was going to be best for her and her body. Not once-- but many times throughout the process.Alex wanted to have this conversation because, frankly, we don’t talk about preparedness enough with it comes to sex. Not the way we do when it comes to safety outdoors. And the reality is that you can be completely prepared and still encounter times when things just don’t go to plan. But knowing the potential risks and options well in advance can always help you to make better, less-stressful, more informed decisions. We know these lessons from being out in nature-- but we rarely apply this logic to our bodies.Alex is sharing her story with the hope that we all begin to seek out more information from our bodies when possible, and ask our medical systems to do the same.. so that no matter where we are-- the backcountry, the couch, or somewhere in between-- that we show up feeling more ready for whatever comes our way.A note that this episode covers discussion of unplanned pregnancy and abortion.Featured in this Episode:Alexandra GabrielleInstagram: @alexandra_abroadPhotography: @abroad_photoYou can listen to a Nature Quickie we did with Alexandra: Colors & SmellsAdditional Resources:International Women’s Health Coalition: Abortion Using Misoprostol PillsVery Well Health - RU486: Abortion Pill InformationPlanned Parenthood: How Does the Abortion Pill Work?Clue: What to Expect Before, During, and After an AbortionKFF - Interactive: How State Policies Shape Access to Abortion CoverageGuttmacher Institute: Distance Traveled to Obtain Clinical Abortion Care in the United States and Reason for Clinic Choice NCBI - Abortion ComplicationsANSIRH - Safety of Abortion in the United StatesComplete Care Community Health Center - A Useful Guide to Retroverted UterusLet’s be friends:We want you to be a part of the Sex Outside community!Find Sex Outside on Instagram! @sexoutsidepodConnect with us on TikTok: @sexoutsidepodCheck out what we’ve saved for you on PinterestWant to support Sex Outside?Leave a 5-star review in Apple Podcasts or the app of your choosing!Head to the Sex Outside Shop to find stickers, shirts, and underwear!Need a transcript for this episode? We need to open up more discussion about what we find pleasurable in our lives, whether it’s outside, in the bedroom, or both. Because when we untangle harmful assumptions about pleasure, we also begin to fray away at some of the things tying us in knots when it comes to discomfort around sex. Which is why Janette Casolary, a queer artist from Seattle and someone we would label as a pleasure advocate, joins us for a discussion on how we can each access pleasure more in our personal lives. There’s a lot of times it’s important to stay on trail-- but exploring what gives us pleasure isn’t one of them. This week on the Carolina Snowflakes Podcast we take a trip back in time to 1898 when America’s only successful coup d’Etat occurred in Wilmington, NC.A group of armed white supremacists violently overturned Wilmington's local government in a riot not dissimilar to the one seen recently in the Nation’s capitol.Through gross media manipulation, physical intimidation, abuse and even murder, the group chased thousands of Black citizens out of the North Carolina town and took control of what they believed was rightfully their own.No one was ever prosecuted or held legally responsible for the acts that occurred in Wilmington and for over 100 years the story was either obscured (whitewashed) or downplayed by the media and government institutions.Considering recent events in the U.S., the story of the Wilmington Massacre has seen a resurgence of interest. It should be no surprise that today’s events tend to parallel the ones of 123 years ago. As they say, history repeats itself. They also say when we remain ignorant to the truth, we are doomed to repeat history over and over again. The story of the Wilmington Massacre is fascinating, but also angering when we (The Snowflakes) admit that we were blissfully unaware of it. How did we not know something so historic happened in the state where we reside? This wasn’t taught in our history courses. Was it taught in yours? References:Consider This Podcast/NPR. Today, we’re joined by The Athletic’s Arif Hasan to break down some of the weekend’s biggest story lines and takeaways, including how the Browns engineered a win over the Steelers without their head coach — and what to expect when they take on Patrick Mahomes and the defending Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs.Follow Arif Hasan’s coverage of the NFL: https://theathletic.com/author/arif-hasan/?source=theleadpodcast

If you menstruate (and honestly, even if you don’t), it’s likely that periods are one of many factors that come into play when you’re looking to head outside. In fact, we know that’s the case-- because we recently asked the She Explores community to tell us what questions or topics they thought about when it came to navigating menstruation in the outdoors, and everyone really came through with ideas, questions, and longstanding myths they wanted to hear busted. We were hoping to find a way to meet this community enthusiasm with thoughts from someone who knows both the medical and the practical aspects of taking your period outdoors. Mary Ann Thomas, a current ICU nurse and former travel nurse, bike tourist, and a queer brown daughter of Indian immigrant parents comes to this conversation with both knowledge and applied know-how to share.
