THE SWIMMER (1968) We dive deep in to The Swimmer and discuss and analyze, maybe just a little bit the glorious film directed by Frank Perry, based on a screenplay by Eleanor Perry, from the 12 page short story by John Cheever. "Well-off ad man Ned Merrill (Burt Lancaster) is visiting a friend when he notices the abundance of backyard pools that populate their upscale suburb. Ned suddenly decides that he'd like to travel the eight miles back to his own home by simply swimming across every pool in town."If you're reading this I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support. Critics called Joel Schumacher's 8MM (1999) “sleazy, appalling, and exploitative.” With Nicolas Cage as a private investigator dragged into the world of underground snuff films, James Gandolfini at his sleaziest, and a young Joaquin Phoenix in one of his earliest breakout roles, the movie was condemned as too dark and disturbing for the 1990s. But does 8MM deserve its reputation as sleaze cinema, or is it a misunderstood neo-noir about cursed destinies and the abyss staring back? On this episode of Four Play, Richard, Thorin, and Monte debate Cage's performance, the film's noir roots, and how it compares to other notorious “snuff myth” films like Hardcore, Faces of Death, and Cannibal Holocaust.Control Body Odor ANYWHERE with Mando and get 20% off + free shipping with promo code FOURPLAY at shopmando.com!

Better grab something to write with before you hit play on this one. In this extra-long episode, we dive into a variety of horror sub-genres and each pick a title that we think defines that category. Not necessarily the best film, but one that captures the essence of the sub-genre in a meaningful way. To help us take on this ridiculously huge (but fun) challenge, we've brought back Aaron Christensen—aka Dr. AC—to join the conversation. If you're new to the genre, this one's especially for you.  If you've been around a few years (or decades) we think the conversation is still worth your time, and we hope that you consider giving a few of these a revisit.  Time to start that new watchlist!  All set? Notes ready? Coffee or energy drink in hand? Then hit play! Titles mentioned in this episode: 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958), Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948), Abbott & Costello Meet the Mummy (1955), Alien (1979), Army of Darkness (1992), Audition (1999), Bad Taste (1987), Baskin (2015), The Beyond (1981), Black Christmas (1974), Black Sabbath (1963), Blair Witch Project (1999), Braindead aka Dead Alive (1992), Bride of Frankenstein (1934), Bring Her Back (2025), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), Carnival of Souls (1962), Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972), Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), Creepshow (1982), Cruel Jaws (1995), Curse of Frankenstein (1957), The Devil's Wedding Night (1973), Dracula (1931), Evil Dead 2 (1987), The Exorcist (1973), Fight Club (1999), Frankenstein (1931), Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969), The French Connection (1971), Gamera vs. Barugon (1966), The Giant Claw (1957), Godzilla (1954), Godzilla vs. Hedorah aka Godzilla vs the Smog Monster (1971), Ju-on: The Grudge (2002), Guinea Pig 2: Flower of Flesh and Blood (1985), The Haunting (1963), Hellraiser (1987), Hereditary (2018), Horror of Dracula (1958), Horror Rises from the Tomb (1973), The Host (2006), The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies (1964), Island of Lost Souls (1932), It Follows (2014), Jacob's Ladder (1990), Jaws (1975), King Kong (1933), Kwaidan (1964), Lair of the White Worm (1988), Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971), The Monster (2016), Nekromantik (1988), Nightbreed (1990), Night of the Living Dead (1968), One Missed Call (2003), Onibaba (1964), Paranormal Activity (2007), Paranormal Activity 2 (2010), Paranormal Activity 3 (2011), Phantasm (1979), Pieces (1982), Possession (1981), Psycho (1960), Pumpkinhead (1988), The Raven (1963), Re-Animator (1985), Repulsion (1965), Return of the Living Dead (1985), Ringu (1998), The Ritual (2017), Rosemary's Baby (1968), The Sadness (2021), Satan's Sadists (1969), Saw (2004), Scream 5 (2013), Scream VI (2023), Seeding of a Ghost (1983), The Seventh Curse (1986), Shatter Dead (1994), Shaun of the Dead (2004), The Shining (1980), Suspiria (1977), Terrified (2017), Terrifier (2016), Tetsuo (1989), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), The Thing (1982), Things (1989), Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972), Toxic Avenger (1984), Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010), The Ugly Stepsister (2025), Uzimaki (2000), Vampyros Lesbos (1971), Viy (1967), What We Do in the Shadows (2014), When Evil Lurks (2023), The Wicker Man (1973), Young Frankenstein (1974)

**Heavy content warning! This episode contains coverage of a very problematic (and cursed) piece of film history. For those who wish to join us in the murky waters ahead, listener discretion is advised…Today we're introducing the listener-selected winner of this year's Miniseries MAYhem, our latest genre series: Lost and Found!!We're going deep on the origins of the Found Footage movement with some complicated thoughts on Ruggero Deodato's infamous and objectionable 1980 satire of western docu-journalism. It's upsetting, it's perverse, but it represents the beginning of a new era for horror. While we don't encourage you to watch this film, we hope this episode will provide you the context for the series that's about to unfold. Next week we're zooming ahead to the internet age of 1999 for one of the greatest American movies ever made, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. There have been many horror writers that have been important to the genre, but few have had the outsized impact of the one and only Chas. Balun. Whether it was his work in Fangoria, Gorezone, or his own magazine Deep Red, even if you didn't see his name at the head of the article, you knew it was him within a few sentences, by either by the tone of the writing, or maybe the films he was covering. Chas' style was humorous and more than a little confrontational, but he was always waving the flag in support of movies that he felt were important and hadn't received enough attention. Sure, they tended to be on the gory side, but for Chas. it wasn't just about the gore. Not entirely, anyway. While the three of us knew his work and the impact it had on us personally, for this very special episode, we felt we needed to talk with other folks who were just as impacted by him, and also knew him personally. In the second half of the show, you'll hear from John Szpunar, author of Xeroxferox: The Wild World of the Horror Film Fanzine and Blood Sucking Freak: The Life and Films of the Incredible Joel M. Reed; Art Ettinger, editor at Ultra Violent magazine; and finally Shawn Lewis, creator of Rotten Cotten and Eibon Press. They all share their own stories of Chas, and we all discuss the profound the impact Chas. had on us and on the horror genre in general.  Don't miss this one! Films mentioned in this episode: Abomination (1988), Bad Taste (1987), The Beyond (1981), Beyond the Darkness (1979), Blood Sucking Freaks (1976), Blue Velvet (1986), Braindead (1992), Bug (1975), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), City of the Walking Dead (1980), Dellamorte Dellamore (1994), The Exorcist (1973), Friday the 13th (1980), Guinea Pig 2: The Flower of Flesh and Blood (1985), Hell of the Living Dead (1980), Last House on Dead End Street (1973), Last House on the Left (1972), Mad Ron's Prevues from Hell (1987), The Nest (1987), Night of the Demon (1980), The Omen (1976), Pieces (1982), Splatterfest Exhumed (2024), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972), Zoltan: Hound of Dracula (1977), Zombie (1979)

Today we talk about moral panics. Specifically, the "Video Nasty" moral panic that happened in the UK in the early 1980s, and then again in the 1990s, when there was widespread fear that by kids watching horror movies with titles like Cannibal Holocaust, Flesh for Frankenstein, I Spit on Your Grave, and The Last House on the Left, they would literally be turned into rapists and killers. Was there any justification for this panic? His most recent focus has been 1974—a pivotal and hauntingly transitional year in horror. From Texas Chainsaw Massacre to forgotten gems like Help Me, I'm Possessed, David's work breaks down the evolution of horror, how societal chaos like the Vietnam War shaped the genre, and what makes 1974 a landmark year for the genre. After being exposed to the so-called bad boys of bodybuilding with Double Trouble last year, Dave decided to pick the breakthrough movie for Peter and David Paul. The Canon Films sword-and-sorcery adventure, The Barbarians. The Barbarians (1987) was a quintessential example of 1980s sword-and-sorcery filmmaking, helmed by cult director Ruggero Deodato, best known for his controversial work on Cannibal Holocaust. Shot on location in Italy and Yugoslavia, the film embraced the rugged landscapes and ancient ruins of Eastern Europe to create its gritty, fantastical world. The producers, including the legendary Cannon Group, aimed to capitalize on the success of films like Conan the Barbarian, infusing the project with a mix of campy action and over-the-top theatrics. Real-life bodybuilder twin brothers Peter and David Paul, dubbed "The Barbarian Brothers," were cast as the lead warriors, their muscular physiques and comedic chemistry serving as the film's primary draw. The production leaned heavily into the aesthetics of the genre, with elaborate costumes, oversized weapons, and practical effects dominating the visual style. Special care was given to creating the film's larger-than-life set pieces, which often featured a mix of brutal combat and exaggerated physical comedy. The soundtrack, composed by Pino Donaggio, added an epic, adventurous tone to the film. While The Barbarians was far from a critical success, it gained a cult following for its unabashed embrace of cheesy spectacle and campy performances. Deodato's direction ensured that the film maintained a self-aware sense of humor, making it a memorable, if not particularly polished, entry into the sword-and-sorcery genre. They grow into mighty warriors determined to reclaim their freedom. Separated as children and forced into gladiatorial combat, the brothers reunite and embark on a quest to rescue their people and recover a magical ruby that holds the key to their tribe's survival. Along the way, they face off against Kadar's forces, monstrous creatures, and treacherous obstacles, relying on their strength, courage, and occasionally bumbling teamwork. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com https://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

In the horror community, the easiest way to show you are a fan is by what you wear. The horror T-shirt has been a staple in the fandom for what seems like forever. But it wasn't always like that. To say that fans have it easy today is a slight understatement. Not only in terms of their availability, but of the selection that is out there! It is an easy way to show the public that you are a card-carrying horror fan, whether you're wearing a Texas Chain Saw t-shirt, Cannibal Holocaust, or even a Night of the Living Dead shirt, it gives others that immediate notation that this person likes horror films. Fright Rags, one of the bigger horror T-shirt companies, has been around for over 2 decades, so we decided to ask owner/operator Ben Scrivens on the show to not only talk about the ins and outs of running a T-shirt company, but also to talk about our love of horror films and conventions. Films mentioned in this episode: Blood Sucking Freaks (1976), Braindead (1992), Bride of Re-Animator (1990), Burial Ground (1981), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), Christine (1983), Day of the Dead (1985), E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Evil Dead (1981), Evil Dead 2 (1987), Faces of Death (1978), Friday the 13th (1980), Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982), Friday the 13th: The New Blood (1988), The Gates of Hell (1980), The Greasy Strangler (2016), Halloween (1978), Halloween II (1981), Hellraiser (1987), House by the Cemetery (1981), Humanoids from the Deep (1980), I Spit on your Grave (1978), It's Alive (1974), Jaws 2 (1978), Jaws 3D (1983), Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988), Let Sleeping Corpse Lie (1974), A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985), Night of the Living Dead (1982), Q: The Winged Serpent (1982), Return of the Living Dead (1985), The Shining (1980), Tales from the Darkside (1990), Tenebrae (1982), Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986), They Live (1988), The Thing (1982), Videodrome (1983), The Warriors (1979), The Wicker Man (1973)

It's a monster mash on this fresh from the grave episode of DEATH BY DVD all about FRANKY AND HIS PALS, directed by Gerald Cormier. What is Franky And His Pals, you ask? Well, let us copy and paste the write up from the official Severinfilms.com website where this movie is available to purchase, because we are to lazy to write something up ourselves and theirs is way better : From the deepest, darkest depths of the shot-on-video vaults… Hidden from view for 30 years… All your favorite movie monsters are back… And they're ready to party like it's 1990! Franky, Drak, Wolfy, Mummy and Humper – the horny hunchback – descend on the tiny mining town of French Gulch in search of lost gold, but it's Halloween Night, and the monsters soon find themselves caught up in the debaucherous festivities of the local townsfolk. Will Franky and His Pals find the gold? Will they learn the ways of love? Will Drak quench his thirst for human blood? Just how explosive is Franky's flatulence? What's that Mad Scientist tinkering on out in his barn? What the hell is a pee-pee? And does any of it really matter? Directed by veteran grindhouse and adult film producer Gerald Cormier (TERROR CIRCUS a.k.a. BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD, 101 ACTS OF LOVE) and seldom-seen beyond the shelves of small-town video shops, this bizarro monster-comedy is finally being resurrected on DVD and is positively exploding with spooky Special Features! And since I copy and pasted all that from Severin, the least I can do is also add the link so you can buy the movie : TAP HERE FOR THE MOVIEDive into the monster mash with your host Harry-Scott Sullivan and kick back and relax with this hoot and an additional hollar of an episode.
