Timecop (1994) Director: Peter HyamsCast: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Mia Sara, Ron Silver, Bruce McGillTime travel has been invented — and naturally, someone's already trying to weaponize it to steal an election. Welcome to Timecop, the 1994 JCVD action sci-fi spectacle where the mullets are questionable, the CGI is deeply committed to being bad, and the concept is actually way more interesting than it has any right to be.In this week's episode of Dewey Pod Monster, Sean and John strap in, hit 88 mph (or whatever the hell they use in this movie), and dive into one of Jean-Claude Van Damme's most enduring and most gloriously flawed films. In this episode, we discuss:Same Matter, Different Problems — The movie beats you over the head with its one rule of time travel — "the same matter can't occupy the same space at the same time" — exactly five zillion times, and somehow still makes a mess of it. We break down every paradox, plot hole, and moment where the logic completely waved goodbye and walked off a cliff.1994 Predicted Everything (Badly) — Ron Silver's corrupt senator wants to buy the presidency using time-stolen money and the power of television. In 2004. It's played as a sinister, far-fetched scheme. We... had some feelings about how eerily close to home that lands in 2025.The CGI Crimes of Our Time — From the rubber-faced time-warp tunnel sequences to the absolute train wreck of Ron Silver touching Ron Silver, this movie's visual effects are a special kind of ambitious failure. We discuss what a modern reboot could do with 30 extra years of technology — and why we'd actually show up for that.We Also Talked About:Body Count (1986) (Tubi)— Sean caught this Ruggero Deodato (of Cannibal Holocaust fame) Italian slasher set in an autumnal forest. Incoherent plot, Friday the 13th vibes that go completely off the rails, and a banger theme song by Claudio Simonetti that rivals Friday the 13th Part III. Charles Napier and David Hess show up. Available on Tubi if you're feeling adventurous.I'm Going to Be Famous (1983) (Ok.Ru) — A direct-to-video melodrama about aspiring actors gunning for their big break, featuring Dick Sargent (I Dream of Jeannie) as a theatrical director. It goes places. Specifically, it ends with a live on-air shooting and a farmer dad beaming with pride that his son is finally on TV. Sean does not heartily recommend it but cannot stop talking about it.Widow's Bay (Apple Tv)— A new Apple TV+ horror-comedy series starring Matthew Rhys (Perry Mason, The Americans) as the skeptical mayor of a cursed New England island. Sean is fully sold — it leans hard into the comedy and actually sticks the landing, which John argues is the only way a horror-comedy works. Eight episodes, dropping weekly.Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films (2014) (Youtube) — John calls this a high recommend for anyone who grew up watching late '70s and '80s action trash. A relentlessly entertaining documentary full of insane production stories, Golan and Globus being magnificently delusional, Tobe Hooper being surprisingly articulate, and more T&A than any non-pornographic documentary has any business containing. Pair with The Go-Go Boys but watch that one first. The Bride (2025) (Amazon) — Maggie Gyllenhaal directs this very loose Bride of Frankenstein retelling with Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley. Looks gorgeous. Both leads are great. Opens five storylines and closes exactly zero of them satisfyingly. Goth Moulin Rouge meets Bonnie and Clyde vibes. John is somewhere in the middle, but would absolutely watch a sequel.New episodes of the Dewey Pod Monster podcast drop every week. We're proud members of the YouRun Podcast Network.

Feel the sweat and the tropical breezes; it’s time to discuss Tiki Terrors and its tropical horror cousins. Transport yourself to an island in the South Pacific or the Caribbean. The exoticism and the removal from “civilization” provide the grounds for some evocative scares. These movies have been with us since the Golden Age. Think King Kong and The Island of Lost Souls. Embrace the mystery and heat, and learn from some veteran Crypticon panelists as they talk all things Tiki Terror. Friend of the Scariest Things, Brian Callahan, hosted a panel at Crypticon Seattle to guide us through a fateful trip to discover what lurks at the edge of the known world. Beware of cultural misappropriation and cultural stereotypes. Cultural sensitivity falls by the wayside here. The edge of the known universe gets short shrift when it comes to cultural respect. Context matters. Tiki and tropical-themed horror movies had their heyday in the ’50s and ’60s when Polynesia still felt very remote, and honestly, it was a different time. At the same time, the film industries of places like the Philippines can export some of their culture through B-movies. For the purposes of this discussion, the criteria for what movies got discussed were reasonably broad. It extended from Polynesia to some of the Voodoo themes on the Atlantic side. If it takes place on a remote island, it would be fair game for discussion. I came away from this session with a roster of films to check out, and that is the beauty of these panel talks. Brian was amazing on the trigger; there was a whole roster of films that were at his fingertips, and he was able to feather in movies, even ones that came from the audience. It was a very niche topic, but attendees came for the deep-cut discussion and were rewarded. This panel was the last panel from the Friday session, and a number of us prepared by wearing Aloha shirts for the event. These are veteran panelists, and it shows. I could listen to Tony Kay talk horror all day! He is one of the best panelists at Crypticon’s disposal. If you don’t come out of this recording with some new movies to check out, you probably are already an expert! I live in Berlin, and something very cool is happening here right now - the film collective Zelluloid42 has been programming film events that this town has sorely needed. In the spirit of the German "Bahnhofskino" (a grindhouse cinema located in or next to a train station, very popular in the 70s and 80s), Zelluloid42 gleefully shows exploitation, horror, and other wonderfully strange obscurities in 16mm & 35mm. Horror films are a unique genre because they can have a profound effect on the viewer. They can literally change lives, leaving such a strong impression that something shifts in the psyche. Whether it makes someone afraid to go in the water, uneasy around bugs, frightened by Frankenstein's creature, or just generally on edge, these films can have a lasting impact. They are meant to scare us, but for some, they remain harmless entertainment. For others, certain films reach much deeper, lingering in the mind long after the credits roll. And yet, we keep coming back for more. Do these films help us confront our fears? Do they help us overcome them? Can they serve as a way to process real-world trauma, something made easier to face when it exists within the safe boundaries of a movie? Join us for this episode as we explore the films that have had a lasting impact on us, along with others that have left a powerful mark on audiences. Movies mentioned in this episode: The Blob (1958), Bring Her Back (2025), Cannibal Ferox (1981), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), Day of the Dead (1985), The Deep House (2021), The Exorcist (1973), Faces of Death (1978), Frankenstein (1931), Friday the 13th (1980), Guinea Pig (1981), Gravity (2013), Halloween (1978), Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986), Hereditary (2018), Infested (2023), Irreversible (2002), Jaws (1977), King Kong (2005), Last House on the Left (1972), Marathon Man (1976), Mondo Magic (1975), Nekromantik (1988), Night of the Lepus (1972), Night of the Living Dead (1968), Old Boy (2003), The Omen (1976), Open Water (2003), The Orphanage (2007), Paranormal Activity (2007), Pet Sematary 91989), Piranha (1978), Psycho (1960), Relic (2020), Requiem for a Dream (2000), Ringu (1998), Scream (1996), A Serbian Film (2010), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Trouble Every Day (2001)

This week we're returning to Italy for a look at one of the dumbest, most baffling action movies ever made, Raiders of Atlantis, aka Atlantis Interceptors, from the notorious Ruggero Deodato of Cannibal Holocaust fame. In this film, a pair of mercenary buddies and a team of scientists from a botched attempt to raise a sunken Russian submarine find themselves stranded on a tropical island in the Atlantic as the feral, violent denizens of lost Atlantis arise from the silent depths of the ocean to reclaim the world. Or something to that effect. It's a desperate fight to survive against wave after wave of road warrior freaks, an race against time to translate an ancient tablet that will restore the ancient civilization, and an endless series of violent gun battles and if I'm being honest, I'm working overtime to make this movie make sense. It's 90 minutes of high-flying nonsense but somehow it ends up being a lot of fun. Shot against the backdrop of Italy's exploitation film industry struggling to find an alternative to the declining horror and giallo markets, it capitalizes on the then-extremely popular trend of Mad Max ripoffs but also tries to tap in to the world's hunger for high-adventure by way of cheap Raiders of the Lost Ark ripoffs only to realize that Raiders of the Lost Ark is incredibly hard to copy on budgets laughably smaller than Raiders. At the same time, the Marcos regime in the Philippines is desperate to draw filmmakers to Manila and as Deodato finds out, it's hard to say no to a totalitarian dictatorship. Episode 096 welcomes three-headed prog-tronic hydra lespecial, plus enigmatic bass-wizard Yheti, for an expansive deep dive into their mind-bending collaborative portal - LIMINOID. Framed through the lens of "A Year in the Life of lespecial," the conversations chronicle a monumental run from Jam Cruise 21 in Feb.2025, thru the LIMINOID experience, then NYE marking their 20th anniversary since forming as high-schoolers in the woods of Connecticut, before looking towards the future. This episode orbits LIMINOID's debut The Outernet, an idiosyncratic sonic tapestry and brilliantly-bizarre concept album where the searing precision of Rory Dolan, Luke Bemand, and Jonny G is masterfully manipulated by the surgical, mad scientist sound design of Yheti. This Day 5 cabin summit at the tail end of this floating carnival captures the fellas [Rory Dolan - drums/vox, Luke Bemand - bass/synths, Jonny G - guitar/synths, vox] reflecting on the boat's bombastic musical escapades, playing with (friends of the pod) Alex Wasily, Mike Dillon and Skerik, Rory's Primus audition, introducing new music onstage, revisiting “Cannibal Holocaust”, spotlighting their relationship with Yheti and a forthcoming collaboration at the time still in its infancy.  The narrative shifts to a focused deep dive in early December 2025 with Yheti, plus a little more color from Jonny G. Since it was always his baby, BG looks to Tyler Yheti to properly unpack the modus operandi behind the LIMINOID endeavor. Explore the creation of The Outernet, how they navigated the "liminal space" between organic instrumentation and avant-garde electronics. This segment highlights the brilliance of the concept, recalls initial challenges performing this project live (see - Mishawaka in May 2025), the tricks and tools required to bring this genre-schitzo robot to life - both in studio and then onstage, and creating a new hybrid strain of intoxicating, brain-splattering sound art that exists beyond traditional boundaries. The saga continues: a series of individual conversations with Rory, Luke, and Jonny from early Feb. 2026.  We complete this podcast revolution around the sun, honor 20 years of hometown buddies who made good, and look towards their mighty bright immediate future. These one-on-one sessions allow for a more granular peek into personal growth, interband dynamics, and creative philosophies as they recognize a brotherhood that has kept them bonded since teenage garage band glory. We amp the stoke for lespecial's long-awaited return to West Coast's burnin' shores on the cryptically-titled Tentacle Difficulties tour. Behold this monumental, DIY evolution from small-town Connecticut proggy power trio to a genre-blurring, frontal-lobe leviathan known to us mere mortals as lespecial. For an episode chaser B.Getz checks in with an old friend in Bret Peretz, a connection rooted at Spirit of Suwannee Music Park years ago. The longtime Tour Manager for Pigeons Playing Ping Pong has worked many jobs behind the scenes over the course of a decade-plus. Several months back, Bret opened up about his beautiful journey from the hotel hospitality industry and nearly joining the Coast Guard, humble backstage beginnings all the way to the P4 gig at the heart of contemporary jam scene success. ViBE Junkie Jam  lespecial - "Boundary Dissolution”  Suwannee Hulaween 2023 lespecial's signature blend of “heavy future groove” combines headbanging metal riffage and surgical rhythmic precision with bone shaking 808s, sub synths and ethereal vocal stylings for a dance floor that welcomes moshing, dancing and hip swaying alike. Listeners are taken on a journey to the musical netherworld through esoteric soundscapes punctuated by raw, primal power. LIMINOID is a musical entity formed through the integration of data streams from Yheti and lespecial, two distinct sonic architects. Yheti orchestrates the sonic experiment while lespecial contributes live instrumentation encoded with rhythmic complexity. Analysis of live performance recordings reveals high variability and dynamic modulation of energy states. Audience response patterns indicate elevated engagement during improvisational sequences. Every now and again, the horror genre produces a film that becomes a bona fide classic. In 1980, director William Lustig and co-writer and star Joe Spinell teamed up to make what may be the defining film of the 42nd Street grindhouse era: Maniac. The film has it all, a serial-killing protagonist who scalps women while sobbing about his mother, buckets of gore from an early-career Tom Savini, and all the usual suspects of late-'70s Times Square: hookers, drugs, and utter despair. A remake, directed by Franck Khalfoun, written by Alexandre Aja, and starring Elijah Wood, arrived in 2012. This time, the action shifts to Los Angeles and leans more heavily into the mannequins that served as surrogate girlfriends in the original. Does it rise to the occasion and meet its predecessor on its own terms? We dig into that question, and much more, on this Twice Told Tales edition of the show. Films mentioned in this episode: The Avengers (2012), Basket Case (1982), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), Dawn of the Dead (2004), The Fly (1986), Friday the 13th (1980), The Godfather (1972), Halloween (1978), High Tension (2003), Inferno (1980), Jaws (1975), Last Horror Film (1982), Last House on the Left (1972), Maniac (1980), Maniac (2012), Pieces (1982), Taxi Driver (1976), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), The Thing (1982), The Warriors (1979)

Synopsis Justine is a young college student with a big heart. After learning about the horrors of female genital mutilation in foreign countries, she becomes interested in joining a local group of activists. While working with the group to stop deforestation in the Amazon, their airplane crash-lands deep in the forest. Which would be bad enough on its own. However, this forest just so happens to be home to cannibalistic natives who quickly capture the very people who came to protect them. Review of The Green Inferno The Green Inferno is a shocking and disgusting movie. As an homage to Cannibal Holocaust, Eli Roth makes sure to stuff The Green Inferno with plenty of over-the-top kills filled to the brim with blood, guts, and eyeballs. While the first viewing of this movie left me feeling depressed and hollow, years later, on my third watch, some of the horror magic has become somewhat juvenile and silly to me. It’s still enjoyable to watch, but I can’t help but roll my eyes a bit at the way the tribe is depicted as the most evil, bloodthirsty killers imaginable. Such a portrayal might even spark questions as to whether it’s even okay to depict tribal natives as savages in such a crude way; however, learning more about how this movie was filmed kind of brings everything back around to being wholesome fun for me. The cannibals in this movie are played by an actual tribe in the Amazon who apparently had a blast making it. At the end of the day, this is a gross movie that can be scary at times, but is often just a little goofy. Score 6/10

Bernie and Pete dig into the controversial era of banned and censored horror films that shocked audiences and outraged politicians in the UK during the 1980s. They review the 2010 documentary Video Nasties: Moral Panic, Censorship & Videotape that chronicles how films like Cannibal Holocaust, The Evil Dead, and Driller Killer sparked a cultural firestorm. From censorship battles and sensational media coverage to the lasting legacy of these infamous movies, we break down why the video nasty phenomenon still fascinates horror fans today. THE SWIMMER (1968) We dive deep in to The Swimmer and discuss and analyze, maybe just a little bit the glorious film directed by Frank Perry, based on a screenplay by Eleanor Perry, from the 12 page short story by John Cheever. "Well-off ad man Ned Merrill (Burt Lancaster) is visiting a friend when he notices the abundance of backyard pools that populate their upscale suburb. Ned suddenly decides that he'd like to travel the eight miles back to his own home by simply swimming across every pool in town."If you're reading this I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your support. Critics called Joel Schumacher's 8MM (1999) “sleazy, appalling, and exploitative.” With Nicolas Cage as a private investigator dragged into the world of underground snuff films, James Gandolfini at his sleaziest, and a young Joaquin Phoenix in one of his earliest breakout roles, the movie was condemned as too dark and disturbing for the 1990s. But does 8MM deserve its reputation as sleaze cinema, or is it a misunderstood neo-noir about cursed destinies and the abyss staring back? On this episode of Four Play, Richard, Thorin, and Monte debate Cage's performance, the film's noir roots, and how it compares to other notorious “snuff myth” films like Hardcore, Faces of Death, and Cannibal Holocaust.Control Body Odor ANYWHERE with Mando and get 20% off + free shipping with promo code FOURPLAY at shopmando.com!

Better grab something to write with before you hit play on this one. In this extra-long episode, we dive into a variety of horror sub-genres and each pick a title that we think defines that category. Not necessarily the best film, but one that captures the essence of the sub-genre in a meaningful way. To help us take on this ridiculously huge (but fun) challenge, we've brought back Aaron Christensen—aka Dr. AC—to join the conversation. If you're new to the genre, this one's especially for you.  If you've been around a few years (or decades) we think the conversation is still worth your time, and we hope that you consider giving a few of these a revisit.  Time to start that new watchlist!  All set? Notes ready? Coffee or energy drink in hand? Then hit play! Titles mentioned in this episode: 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958), Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948), Abbott & Costello Meet the Mummy (1955), Alien (1979), Army of Darkness (1992), Audition (1999), Bad Taste (1987), Baskin (2015), The Beyond (1981), Black Christmas (1974), Black Sabbath (1963), Blair Witch Project (1999), Braindead aka Dead Alive (1992), Bride of Frankenstein (1934), Bring Her Back (2025), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), Carnival of Souls (1962), Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972), Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), Creepshow (1982), Cruel Jaws (1995), Curse of Frankenstein (1957), The Devil's Wedding Night (1973), Dracula (1931), Evil Dead 2 (1987), The Exorcist (1973), Fight Club (1999), Frankenstein (1931), Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969), The French Connection (1971), Gamera vs. Barugon (1966), The Giant Claw (1957), Godzilla (1954), Godzilla vs. Hedorah aka Godzilla vs the Smog Monster (1971), Ju-on: The Grudge (2002), Guinea Pig 2: Flower of Flesh and Blood (1985), The Haunting (1963), Hellraiser (1987), Hereditary (2018), Horror of Dracula (1958), Horror Rises from the Tomb (1973), The Host (2006), The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies (1964), Island of Lost Souls (1932), It Follows (2014), Jacob's Ladder (1990), Jaws (1975), King Kong (1933), Kwaidan (1964), Lair of the White Worm (1988), Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971), The Monster (2016), Nekromantik (1988), Nightbreed (1990), Night of the Living Dead (1968), One Missed Call (2003), Onibaba (1964), Paranormal Activity (2007), Paranormal Activity 2 (2010), Paranormal Activity 3 (2011), Phantasm (1979), Pieces (1982), Possession (1981), Psycho (1960), Pumpkinhead (1988), The Raven (1963), Re-Animator (1985), Repulsion (1965), Return of the Living Dead (1985), Ringu (1998), The Ritual (2017), Rosemary's Baby (1968), The Sadness (2021), Satan's Sadists (1969), Saw (2004), Scream 5 (2013), Scream VI (2023), Seeding of a Ghost (1983), The Seventh Curse (1986), Shatter Dead (1994), Shaun of the Dead (2004), The Shining (1980), Suspiria (1977), Terrified (2017), Terrifier (2016), Tetsuo (1989), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), The Thing (1982), Things (1989), Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972), Toxic Avenger (1984), Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010), The Ugly Stepsister (2025), Uzimaki (2000), Vampyros Lesbos (1971), Viy (1967), What We Do in the Shadows (2014), When Evil Lurks (2023), The Wicker Man (1973), Young Frankenstein (1974)

Episode 78 is here pals! It's the "Match of the Week" Edition w/ the esteemed Unkle of Beeks for a very special Sabu Tribute Triple-Header edition of the show! We have a good little ol' chat abut Sabu's special (& unique) place in wrasslin'-history & talk 3 of my very favourite Sabu matches! We start with Sabu vs La Parka from 2002 MLW, then a classic mid-90s indie romp that was the '94 Sabu vs Cactus Jack 'Desert-Death-Falls-Count-Anywhere-Match' at the Silver Nugget Casino. Followed last by one of Sabu's most infamous matches; the dreaded 'Born to Be Wired' '97 ECW No-Ropes Barbed Wire match against Terry Funk! A heck of a trio if I do say so myself along with all the rambling nonsense that happens when Jeremey & I chat - from the Godfather trilogy to 'High Voltage' to Cannibal Holocaust! It's a heck of a ride!In my 'World of Chris-Things' intro monologue I chat my recent comings and goings, the question of creative 'burnout', the new book launch and getting out of those creative funk-days.Enjoy!!Check out the Chris Things MOTW illustration in question here: MOTW 87: Sabu vs. La ParkaMOTW 88: Sabu vs. Cactus JackMOTW 89: Sabu vs. Terry Funk (Born to be Wired)ChrisThings.com.au is the place for original art, prints, calendars & much more!Follow us on Instagram: @ChrisThings, @JaimsVanderbeek, @SocialSuplexFollow us on Twitter: @ChrisThings, @JaimsVanderbeek, @SocialSuplexLike us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SocialSuplex/Join our Discord: https://discord.gg/QUaJfaCVisit our website for news, columns, and podcasts: https://socialsuplex.com/Join the Social Suplex community Facebook Group: The Wrestling (Squared) CircleWrestling-Art with Chris Things is the Pro-Wrestling Art niche Podcast of the Social Suplex Podcast Network. It's upsetting, it's perverse, but it represents the beginning of a new era for horror. While we don't encourage you to watch this film, we hope this episode will provide you the context for the series that's about to unfold. Today we talk about moral panics. Specifically, the "Video Nasty" moral panic that happened in the UK in the early 1980s, and then again in the 1990s, when there was widespread fear that by kids watching horror movies with titles like Cannibal Holocaust, Flesh for Frankenstein, I Spit on Your Grave, and The Last House on the Left, they would literally be turned into rapists and killers. Was there any justification for this panic? Can hyper-violent or hyper-sexualized media in general erode the morality of children? Merch and more: www.badmagicproductions.com Timesuck Discord! https://discord.gg/tqzH89vWant to join the Cult of the Curious PrivateFacebook Group?
