We welcome actress Erin Murphy, who spent her first eight years of life charming TV watchers as young Tabitha Stephens on Bewitched. Erin takes us behind the scenes at one of television's most beloved classics, sharing vivid memories from a childhood spent witnessing the creation of Hollywood magic.Erin and her fraternal twin sister Diane were originally cast together to share the role of Tabitha, following child labor laws which severely limit the number of hours a toddler can spend working. But, as Erin reveals with a laugh, in the 1960s, rules were “suggestions.” Erin was the twin who took to the craft of acting and she was often brought right back to the set while producers pretended to swap her out. Soon, Erin became the show's singular Tabitha.Erin recalls the delight of working with fantastical props, whimsical effects, and a cast she adored. A natural performer, she memorized not only her own lines but everyone else's, and she truly cherishes her time on the set. Erin and Diane were treated with kindness and respect and were even given Donna Reed's former dressing room where the amenities of home gave them space for play and nap time. Erin's success on Bewitched soon led to appearances on other iconic shows, including Lassie.Erin is coming with “two Darrins” insights. She worked with Dick York and Dick Sargent for three years each and she shares a touching story about reconnecting with the original Darrin, Dick York, years later through the Kevin and Bean morning radio show. She weighs in on whether Bewitched can be read as a metaphor for being different or even being closeted and she opines on why the show still resonates today as a fun, campy, nostalgic, yet surprisingly modern-feeling classic.Erin also recalls the many rising stars who made early Bewitched appearances and she shares thoughts on why she never truly connected with Paul Lynde. She reflects on a groundbreaking episode, written by high-school students, that confronted racism. The story involves Tabitha and her best friend Lisa who is black. When told by an adult that they could never be sisters, Tabitha uses witchcraft to turn them both polka dotted. Erin identifies this as Elizabeth Montgomery's favorite episode. After her early TV career, Erin enjoyed a normal childhood in Orange County before returning to the entertainment world as a host and reality-show participant in projects like Hulk Hogan's Celebrity Wrestling and RuPaul's Drag U. She went on to raise six children, including a son with autism, and has devoted herself to community service and volunteerism. Erin even launched her own alpaca farm, and turned it into a thriving business selling knit goods! This TV icon is as endearing as she is inspiring and Erin's Hollywood and beyond journey is a testament to her grace, charm and character. In current media --Weezy: One Shot With Ed Sheeran on NetflixFritz: The American Revolution from Ken BurnsPath Points of Interest:Erin Murphy on FacebookErin Murphy on InstagramErin Murphy on WikipediaErin Murphy on IMDBOne Shot With Ed Sheeran on NetflixThe American Revolution - PBS
Happy Turkey Day! To celebrate, we're pivoting away from our Halloween theme to snap our fingers to the hilariously morbid 90s Thanksgiving classic, Addams Family Values (1993). We've got the whole spread: campiness done right, the enduring icon that is Joan Cusack's Debbie, satire that reflects with a sting, and what went down at Camp Chippewa. So whether you're cooking or on dish duty, press play and let us (and The Addams) keep you company!TimestampsNegronomicon - 6:50Crit - 18:46Final Curls - 1:08:30Gems from Ep. 115A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1973)Thanksgiving (2023)Addams Family Values (1993)The Real Housewives of Atlanta (2008)The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (2010)Jersey Shore (2009)Love is Blind: UK (2024)Love & Hip Hop (2011)Love Island (2015)America's Next Top Model (2003)Chad Powers (2025)Survivor (1999)The Addams Family (1991)Sister Act (1990)A Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)V/H/S/Halloween (2025)The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)The Bad Seed (1956)The Parent Trap (1998)The Parent Trap (1961)Heavyweights (1995)The Santa Clause (1994)Wednesday (2022, television series)The Addams Family (1964, television series)Riverdale (2017, television series)Columbo (1968, television series)Bewitched (1964, television series)Monk (2002, television series)School of Rock (2003)The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy (2001, animated television series)The Addams Family Reunion (1998)Scary Movie 6 (2026)Scary Movie 2 (2001)Support the show
Don and Tom run through a Wall Street Journal list of “subtle signs it might be time to retire,” reacting to each one with their usual mix of disbelief, personal anecdotes, and gentle ribbing. The episode wanders into tech reluctance, job promotions nobody wants, Sunday dread, obsessive 401(k) checking, volunteering guilt, missing peers, feeling left out of friends' retirements, boss-related misery, and aging knees. They also answer listener questions about Schwab Intelligent Portfolios and their high cash allocations, discuss the shrinking role of physical cash, explain the real value of pre-1964 silver quarters, and handle calls on Social Security math. Tom repeatedly tracks his daughter's high-school soccer match on-air, providing live updates as the drama unfolds. 1:06 WSJ list of “subtle signs it's time to retire” begins 1:40 Sign #1: Feeling numb arriving at work 2:11 Why neither host relates to workplace numbness 2:59 Sign #2: Shrinking from new tech tools (Tom jokes incoming) 3:40 Don embraces AI, Tom… less so 4:21 Sign #3: Avoiding promotions; why neither wants a bigger job 5:16 Sign #4: The “Sunday scaries” 5:50 Sign #5: Constantly checking your 401(k) balance 6:26 Mid-list recap before the break 7:42 Second half of the list introduced 8:57 Sign #6: Wanting to volunteer more 9:40 Sign #7: Realizing all your peers have retired 10:11 Don jokes about dying at his desk 11:34 Sign #8: Feeling left out as friends enjoy retirement trips 12:40 Sign #9: Hating your boss (and why that's not a retirement issue) 12:56 Sign #10: Achy knees and “retire before you can't enjoy things” 13:35 Doctors, guarantees, and aging joints 14:43 Call for listener questions 15:04 Call: Schwab Intelligent Portfolios' big cash allocations 16:28 How Schwab makes money on the spread 18:20 Transparency vs. hidden fees 20:20 Back from break — Wednesday podcast explanation 21:31 Don hates change (the coin kind and the life kind) 22:30 Historical buying power of coins 22:56 Pre-1964 silver quarter value 24:15 Odds of finding one in circulation 25:10 What amount of money makes you bend over and pick it up? 25:47 Cleaning out the garage vs. hunting silver coins 27:36 Halftime soccer update: the comeback begins 29:02 Caller: misunderstanding “8% interest” from Social Security discussion 30:26 Caller Paul on cash vs. cashless society 31:51 Coca-Cola prices through time 32:57 Only 12–18% of payments today are cash 34:02 Holiday well-wishes and generational shifts 35:34 Bewitched, credit checks, and pre-internet detective work Learn more about your ad choices. On this week's show, Steve, Dana, and Julia pull up proverbially barstools at Sardi's to discuss Richard Linklater's latest film Blue Moon, which is about one night in the life of Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart. As played by a transformed Ethan Hawke, Hart is witty, needy, and totally captivating. Next, they travel Down Cemetery Road by way of a conversation about the new conspiracy series starring Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson based on a novel by Mick Heron of Slow Horses fame. Finally, they turn to a piece of real estate that may forever live in infamy as “The Pussy Palace” thanks to Lily Allen's brutally honest and stunningly well-crafted album West End Girl. On an exclusive bonus episode for Slate Plus subscribers, the hosts take up the issue of biographical pictures—aka biopics— and Slate's recent package Portrait Mode about the ubiquitous film genre. Endorsements: Dana: Lily Allen's song “The Fear”— to listen to and perform at karaoke. Julia: A boule of chocolate sourdough bread from the bakery of Milo & Olive in Los Angeles. Steve: Roberto Bolaño's novella By Night in Chile and Ella Fitzgerald singing “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered” on the album Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Rodgers & Hart Song Book. Matt Trump celebrates Halloween in true Spellbreakers fashion with a nostalgic, spooky, and thought-provoking journey through decades of magic, media, and meaning. Broadcasting in costume and spirit, Matt revisits the eerie Disney album Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House before diving into a cinematic exploration of witches in pop culture, from Polanski's haunting Macbeth to the charm of Bewitched and the romance of Bell, Book and Candle. Along the way, he muses on the evolution of Halloween itself, how it's shifted from childhood innocence and neighborhood trust to modern horror and memes, and what that says about America's cultural soul. Mixing humor, history, and philosophy, Matt examines how love redeems even the darkest tales and why every generation redefines “the witch” to reflect its own anxieties and desires. He closes the night with sponsors, poetry, and a heartfelt toast to the spooky season, reminding listeners that Halloween's magic lives on in nostalgia, faith, and a good cup of Loaded Gun Coffee.

My guest this week has been giving a lot of thought lately to what he was born to do. Wellington Love is one of the producers of the new documentary I Was Born This Way, which tells the story of Archbishop Carl Bean. That might not be a household name, but you're certainly familiar with his work and the people he's influenced — from his pioneering activism around HIV/AIDS, and also his musical career and the disco anthem that inspired Lady Gaga's Born this Way. We'll have that conversation in just a minute. First, a heads up that I have a new YouTube video out about Frankenstein and the gay director who brought the monster to life, James Whale. That's at youtube.com/mattbaume.And to celebrate the occasion, we'll be watching the 1970s parody, Young Frankenstein, on Twitch — and following along with the screenplay, comparing the very funny script to what made it to the screen. Join me for that this Saturday and Sunday at noon pacific at Twitch.tv/mattbaume.And as always, if you're enjoying The Sewers of Paris, head over to Patreon.com/mattbaume to become a member, support the show, and get access to bonus videos and more.
Are you running your race of faith, only to find yourself crawling toward the finish line? Have you felt the pressure to add something to the finished work of Christ—traditions, moral performance, cultural approval—hoping to be truly complete? In Galatians 3, the apostle Paul delivers a direct and urgent wake-up call: “O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you?” Discover with us the foundational truths of the Christian gospel—salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone—and why any attempt to add to it is a betrayal of the cross and a curse upon your spiritual journey. In this message, we unpack: The rhetorical questions that expose the absurdity of trying to earn what God freely gives. Abraham's story: Justified by faith, not law-keeping. Every believer can become a child of promise. Modern “bewitchments”: progressive Christianity, social justice as a substitute for the gospel, sexual ideology, and therapeutic religion. How these trends infiltrate the church and lure us away from biblical faith. The cross of Christ shatters human pride and self-sufficiency. It reminds us that true spiritual power begins and ends with what Jesus accomplished—nothing more, nothing less. Watch now to examine your own heart: Are you trusting in Christ's finished work or your own performance? Let this sermon call you back to the simplicity and offense of the gospel, and empower you to run the race God gave you—from start to finish—by faith alone.
On this week's main podcast, Manuel Veth and Matt Ford sit down to break down what has been an exciting matchday eight in the Bundesliga. The two start the show by discussing Borussia Dortmund vs. Köln and the emergence of young, up-and-coming star Saïd El Mala. They then move on to discuss Bayern star Lennart Karl. Should both El Mala and Karl be called up by Nagelsmann? Also on this pod, Manu explains the term Hexer and the two discuss anecdotes about Hansa Rostock. Enjoy. Learn more about your ad choices. "Tabitha" was a short-lived sitcom that aired on ABC in 1977, serving as a spin-off of the iconic series Bewitched. The show followed Tabitha Stephens (played by Lisa Hartman), now all grown up and blessed with her mom's powers, working as a television producer in Los Angeles. While Bewitched thrived on suburban domestic chaos, Tabitha shifted the formula into a workplace setting. Despite its familiar pedigree and Hartman's charm, Tabitha struggled to find its footing. Critics felt the show lacked the wit and chemistry that made Bewitched a classic, and audiences didn't fully connect with its new direction. Ratings were low, and the series was canceled after just eleven episodes. So, is this magical spin-off worth the watch? Listen as the boys dust off the pilot episode and decide. Starring: Lisa Hartman, Robert Urich, Mel Stewart, David Ankrum, Karen Morrow, Timothy Blake, Eric Server, & Barry Van Dyke www.S1E1POD.com Instagram & X (Twitter): @S1E1POD
In this penetrating lesson, Brother Singh draws a solemnparallel between willful neglect of truth and spiritual blindness. In today's religious climate, many present the gospel merely as an academic discussion open to all who will listen. Yet, as Brother Singh reminds us, God will not settle for "another gospel," one that bewitches His chosen followers.
Don and Tom kick off by joking about their “record-breaking” call drought before diving headlong into the week's biggest speculative loser: crypto. The duo dismantle the mythology around Bitcoin and its countless imitators, comparing the excitement of trading coins to sports betting and reminding listeners that portfolios are for investing, not gambling. They tie the current crypto crash to leverage, insider-like trades, and the same fraud patterns seen in history's great financial cons—from Jay Gould's gold-cornering to Elizabeth Holmes' blood-testing farce. Later, they field listener questions on asset location, liquidity management, emerging-market exposure, and the danger of leverage via MicroStrategy's Bitcoin bet. Through it all, they emphasize fiduciary discipline, skepticism toward hype, and the basic rule: excitement and good investing rarely mix. 0:04 Pretending last Saturday's show didn't happen; Tom's pun about “Pacific” questions. 1:41 Crypto crash carnage—Bitcoin off 16%, Ethereum down 25%, “Trump Coin” collapsing. 2:30 Comparing crypto's thrill-seeking crowd to sports betting mania. 3:55 Why your financial advisor should not be your gambling coach. 4:48 The leveraged, insider-ish side of crypto speculation. 5:06 The absurdity of 10,000+ coins that serve no purpose but gambling. 7:40 Calling crypto “speculative” and comparing it to a casino roller coaster. 8:10 Binance payout trouble—proof many players don't know how to run big-money businesses. 10:32 MicroStrategy's leveraged Bitcoin plunge and the perils of margin. 11:37 The illusion of “value” in digital tokens versus productive assets. 12:55 Historical echo: borrowed money, bubbles, and 1929-style leverage warnings. 15:25 Listener questions segment opens; lighthearted banter about philately and call volume. 17:02 “ChatGPT beats bad advisors” — asset location done right (bonds in IRA, stocks in Roth). 18:30 Why most “advisors” ignore tax planning in favor of commissions. 20:23 Jay Gould, robber barons, and the Wall Street Journal's bizarre defense of con artists. 22:12 From Nikola to Theranos—lying as business strategy and why “gray areas” hurt investors. 24:53 The moral cost of tolerating fraud disguised as innovation. 26:36 Why trust is the real foundation of capitalism, not creative deception. 27:00 How to protect yourself: fee-only fiduciary advice and due diligence. 27:36 Mariners hangover theory for low call volume; nostalgic TV banter (“Bewitched”). 29:06 Caller Tom (Seattle): $4 M portfolio, $1 M in money market—how much liquidity is too much? 30:34 The hidden risk of waiting too long to react when rates fall. 33:08 Building a CD ladder to lock yield without betting on one-day rates. 34:25 Quick take: Why they'd avoid owning Boeing stock individually. 36:18 Caller Justin (Florida): emerging-market allocation for high-risk investors. 37:29 Case for small-cap and value tilts, including emerging markets. 38:34 Should you exclude China? Why it's still essential in global portfolios. 39:29 Closing reminders—use the website for questions, and find fiduciary help at TalkingRealMoney.com. Learn more about your ad choices. Don and Tom kick off this episode with a satirical bang—mocking the apocalyptic tone of a MarketWatch article about the “Fourth Turning,” a cyclical doom prophecy claiming America faces a cataclysmic reset every 80–100 years. Citing wars, depressions, and now AI, wealth taxes, and the fall of the dollar, the hosts break down the fatalistic tone, expose the fear-marketing behind it, and reassure listeners that, historically, markets have recovered—and rewarded long-term investors. 0:04 Faux alien warning: the Fourth Turning economic apocalypse is coming 1:16 Dissecting the MarketWatch article and the “Fourth Turning” theory 2:26 Peak catastrophe by 2030? WRIGGLING WORMS, CRAWLING BUGS, SLITHERING SNAKES, WITCHCRAFT, RITUALS, AND BODILY FLUIDS OF EVERY COLOR IMAGINABLE!! Once upon a time, three brothers named Shaw started a film studio in Hong Kong. That studio grew into a Southeast Asian powerhouse, building its reputation on wuxia, kung fu, period dramas, comedies, and, in the mid '70s, horror. The special Shaw brand of horror, defined by black magic rituals, wild visuals, and exploitation spectacle was, in part, spearheaded by two filmmakers – Ho Meng-Hua and Kuei Chih-Hung. Join Gabe and special guest host Stefan Hammond, author of Sex & Zen and a Bullet in the Head (with Mike Wilkins, 1996), Hollywood East (2000), and More Sex, Better Zen, Faster Bullets (2020), as they explore the history of the studio and films of these two maverick directors. This is a particularly packed episode, covering Shaw's horror films in general, but focusing mostly on Ho's Black Magic (1975), Black Magic 2 (1976), and The Oily Maniac (1976), and Kuei's Killer Snakes (1974), Hex (1980), Bewitched (1981), and The Boxer's Omen (1983). 00:00 – Intro (a brief history of Shaw and Southeast Asian horror) 20:20 – Ho Meng-Hua, Black Magic, and Black Magic 2 53:52 – The Oily Maniac (and more Ho) 1:01:24 – Kuei Chih-Hung and The Killer Snakes 1:33:28 – Hex, Bewitched, and The Boxer's Omen (and more Kuei) 2:06:32 – Outro

'The Hank McCune Show' - an otherwise unremarkable footnote in American TV history - became the first single-camera sitcom to deploy a pre-recorded laugh track (aka ‘canned laughter') on 9th September, 1950. The giggles and applause came courtesy of Charlie Douglass, who made a career of capturing audience reaction in his ‘laff box', and then expertly sprinkling it across other shows, including Bewitched, The Munsters and The Flintstones. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly look back at Red Skelton's ‘pantomimes', the origin of much of Douglass' recorded laughter; explain why live studio audiences are sometimes even more enthusiastic clappers than pre-recorded ones; and reveal how the Bolshoi Ballet STILL employ professional audience reactionaries… Further Reading: • ‘The invention of laughter: Charley Douglass and the laff box' (The Verge, 2013): https://www.theverge.com/2013/12/13/5207136/Charley-Douglass-laff-box-laugh-track • ‘How we fell in and out of love with the Laff Box, the laugh track machine that changed sitcoms forever' (ABC, 2020): https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-04-16/history-of-the-laugh-track-laff-box-charles-douglass/12117866 • ‘How Do Laugh Tracks Work?' John is joined by singer-songwriter and musician Laufey and producer Spencer Stewart to discuss how they wrote and recorded the album ‘Silver Lining'. Having performed on numerous national TV singing shows in her youth, Icelandic-Chinese artist Laufey released her first full-length album, ‘Everything I Know About Love' in 2022. It was praised for seamlessly blending jazz influences with contemporary production. Her second album, ‘Bewitched', continued this trend with its captivating jazz-pop ballads and earned her the 2024 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
