Today's guest hates traffic as much as I do. Plus he helped invent an entire genre of music. Welcome David J. Haskins to the podcast. He has a new album out, but you may also recognize him from his previous bands, Bauhaus and Love And Rockets. His love of music began with reggae and sneaking into clubs when he was a kid. His biggest inspirations were Bowie, Marc Bolan, and Roxy Music. He started off playing guitar but switched to bass when music started getting serious. Daid talks about early bands and getting banned from venues. He also reveals when and how he switched to fretless bass. It's a pretty funny story. He also talks about writing Bauhaus' most well-known song, Bela Lugosu's Dead. Once Bauhaus ended, Love and Rockets begins. David discusses that transition and where the bands broke first. David has had an impressive solo career and he has a new album, The Mother Tree. It's a unique album, both in its concept and its execution. The album is beautiful and touching. It also has a companion book of poetry. Go to davidjhaskins.com to grab both. Check out his social media links while you're there. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on socials. In this episode of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar is joined by Cam Muncey — guitarist, co-founder, and key songwriter of Australian rock legends Jet — to discuss his bold and unexpected debut solo album, Cam Muncey & the Delusions of Grandeur. Recorded in just 30 days with producer Jan Skubiszewski, Jet bassist Mark Wilson, and drummer Peter Marin, Delusions of Grandeur is an expansive, deeply personal record. Moving through dreamy shoegaze, melodic guitar-pop, 80s indie, swaying soul, and atmospheric art-rock, it draws on influences from The Smiths, Talk Talk, Curtis Mayfield, R.E.M., Mazzy Star, The War On Drugs, and Roxy Music. Guided by Muncey's warm vocals, the album invites listeners on a rich, genre-spanning journey. Highlights include “Already Gone,” “Don't Fade On Me,” “No Rock'n'Roll Star,” “I've Been Low,” “Breathing Again,” and the breezy pop of “Friendly.” In this candid conversation, Muncey shares what inspired him to step out on his own, the freedom he found creating without limits, and the lessons learned from touring with icons like Bruce Springsteen. Tune in to Episode #234 of the XS Noize Podcast for an honest, immersive look into Cam Muncey's world — a story of risk, reinvention, and musical discovery. As a special treat this week, we've delved into our collections to give you some deep cuts from our favourites – things like Queen, Bowie, Joe Cocker, Nick Cave and TISM. We think you'll love them, In Rock News, Jeff delves into songs that turn 60 on 2025, looks at Sunday Lunch with Toyah and Robert Fripp, and looks at Yachtley Crew, a strange phenomenon from California. Our Album You Must Hear Before You Die this week is Raw Power (1973) by Iggy and the Stooges. The lo-fi production on this highly influential album is the source of much tension between Bowie and Iggy, much of it not fair. We liked it! Enjoy. In the music business, Brian Eno is a name to conjure with. He's been the producer of tremendous hits by U2, Talking Heads, David Bowie, Grace Jones, Coldplay, and many other top artists. But he's also a conceptualist, nicknamed Professor Eno in the British music press, and a foundational figure in ambient music—a genre whose very name Eno coined. Amanda Petrusich speaks with Eno about his two new albums that just came out, “Luminal” and “Lateral,” and his new book, “What Art Does.” “One of the realizations I had when I was writing this book is that really the only product of art is feelings,” Eno says. “Its main point is to make your feelings change—is to give you feelings that you perhaps didn't have before or did have before and want to have again or want to experiment with. So it seems very simplistic to say, ‘Oh, it's all about feelings.' But actually I think it is. Feelings are overlooked by all of those people who think bright children shouldn't do art.”

In this episode we welcome the great Paul Gambaccini into RBP's world and ask him about his 50+ years as one of Britain's best-loved broadcasters. "The Great Gambo" tells us about his early radio days at Dartmouth College's WDCR station and explains how he slipped his foot in the door at Rolling Stone in 1970. He then recounts his first meeting with "underground deejay" John Peel (plus his BBC producer John Walters) while still an Oxford postgraduate fleeing Richard Nixon's America, We ask our guest about his famous Stone interviews with Elton John (and Bernie Taupin) and Paul McCartney, then hear about his Radio 1 debut in 1974. Paul discusses his sexuality, his winding up on the Beeb's "Christmas tree" list, and his nightmare year of being witch-hunted without evidence by the sleuths of Operation Yewtree. After offering his thoughts on the constitutional crisis in his homeland, our guest expresses his approval of Beyoncé ahead of her "Cowboy Carter" tour's London leg in June. We listen to clips from a 2003 audio interview with "Queen Bey" by The Observer Music Monthly's Simon Garfield. After Mark quotes from newly-added interviews with Elvis Presley (1969) and Roxy Music's (Brian) Eno (1973), Jasper talks us out with his thoughts on pieces about the Roots (2005) and Beyoncé's sister Solange (2007). Many thanks to special guest Paul Gambaccini. Hear his radio shows on the air, including the Paul Gambaccini Collection on BBC Radio 2. Pieces discussed: Paul Gambaccini's writer's page on RBP, The Rolling Stone Interview: Elton John, Paul McCartney, Beyoncé audio, Elvis the Husband talks about Elvis the Pelvis, The Strange World of Roxy Music, The Roots: Growing Underground, Romanthony: A Prince Among Men and Why Solange Matters.

Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!Back in Season 1, we talked at length about Warren Zevon, one of the great American songwriters and one of our idols. So, this year Warren Zevon has been inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame, along with Bad Company and Cyndi Lauper, and we thought that was a perfect excuse to close the loop on our coverage of his career. It's all here – his later career, final album, appearances on Letterman. We loved doing it, and we know that you will love listening to this one! Our “Album You Must Listen to Before You Die” is John Lennon's 1980 hit, “Imagine”. As usual with Lennon's solo albums, it's more (and less) than it seems on the face of it, containing some of Lennon's best work along with some filler. But, hey, it's a strong album and gave Roxy Music their worst-ever cover (FYI - “Jealous Guy”). We also venture into the world of ChatGPT to find out the Best Albums of 1972. Fairly strong list – Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Lou Reed and..............................Wishbone Ash! Who? Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by Andrew Stuttaford. Andrew needs little introduction as the editor of NR's Capital Matters. Find him online right here at National Review or at @AStuttaford on Twitter/X.Andrew's Music Pick: Brian EnoHere he comes, the boy who tried to vanish to the future or the past. Yes, it's time for Political Beats to celebrate one of the most influential musicians in the history of modern recorded sound -- a man who, ironically enough, is at pains to characterize himself as a non-musician. Children of the Eighties and Nineties may primarily understand Brian Eno as the producer who took U2 to megastardom, but his work as a producer is properly only a footnote to his work as a songwriter and (most importantly of all) a conceptualist. Eno first achieved fame with Roxy Music as their "noise man," providing outrageous sounds alongside "treatments" -- electronic reprocessing -- of the rest of the group's instruments. But Roxy Music was ultimately pianist/vocalist Bryan Ferry's baby, and so Eno soon struck out on his own, for a solo career that would bring him into collaboration with some of the best and most innovative musicians of the Seventies as he put out a sequence of four "lyrical" albums which bent the definition of "popular music" well past its breaking point and into the avant-garde. At the same time, Eno was creating an entirely new genre of recorded sound: so-called "ambient" music, written and recorded in such a way as to (per his maxim) "reward your attention without demanding it."This, of course, is only the tip of the iceberg in a career that also includes brilliant songwriting collaborations with Robert Fripp, David Bowie, and Talking Heads among others. All of this and much more are discussed on a episode Political Beats has been waiting to do for eight years: Brian Eno played an enormous role in inventing the sonic world we still live in, and also made some of the most unexpectedly profound and beautiful music while doing so. We are lucky to be joined by NR's own Andrew Stuttaford for this episode, who lends particular credibility to the discussion as a fan from all the way back in 1972, during the Roxy years. Enjoy stepping into another (green) world.

Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! Why do you like the music you do? Is it as simple as “It's what I heard on the radio”? Or something deeper? People with elder siblings may be exposed to music earlier than first children. Jeff had an older brother, so was exposed earlier to cool music - Beatles, Janis, Hendrix, and so on. Mick was the eldest in his family and had to find his own taste. (No surprise considering what he listens to!) Were you bullied as a child? Influence! Did you share music with your friends? Influence! Did you have access to a good radio station? Or print media? Influence!! We talk about our early influences – musical & otherwise – and look at how they played a role in what we listen to today. In Rock News, Ringo has released a country album, and Toto is touring. Oh well, shouldn't take them long to play their 3 hits. You know Jeff's obsessed with AI, so he asked three AI brands to nominate the greatest albums of 1971. Not much variation, really. One day, we may ask them to understand quality, rather than sales figures, and see what they give us. Our Album You Must Listen to Before you Die is “Blue” by Joni Mitchell - an top grade album that deserves to be here. This week we set the controls of our Wayback Machine to the funky days of 1975 and celebrate the 50th anniversary of some iconic albums! It's a year of highs for a lot of bands we now think of as classic rock; it was a key year for funk and disco; the Philly Soul sound was very much in fashion; and it was a year of reinvention for some well-established acts. We talk about albums by Elton John, KISS, KC and the Sunshine Band, Queen, Parliament, Roxy Music, Fleetwood Mac, Aerosmith, the Boss, and the weirdest album Lou Reed ever made. We even get a history lesson on the Third (THIRD!) Great Cod War! If you'd like to follow along with our discussion, we have a Spotify Playlist highlighting all the music that we talk about in the show! Let us know your favorite artist, album or song from 1975, especially if it's one that we didn't cover. Join us as Frizz drinks Writers Tears Copper Pot Irish Whiskey and Bob drinks Rare Hare Lucky Bastard 30 Year Old as we discuss how U2 went from a Dublin kitchen to a multi album deal on Island Records in just 4 short years. We also learn who just might be Bob's least favorite band ever.

Folks, we're stretching a bit on this one. Lynch noticed that Roger Waters performed "The Wall" at the Berlin wall in this month, and used that as an excuse to feature A Momentary Lapse of Reason, which was the latest studio album by Pink Floyd. Since that originally came out in 1987, we're asking you to squint a bit to see it's relevance to the summer of 1990. That being said...A Momentary Lapse of Reason is the first Pink Floyd album released after bassist and primary songwriter Roger Waters left the band. Waters had expected that Pink Floyd would simply disband, and was surprised when David Gilmour and Nick Mason decided to continue without him. Acrimony and lawsuits appeared, but in the end a Water-less Pink Floyd continued on.Unlike many prior Pink Floyd albums, this one is not playing off a single concept. Instead, it is a more traditional collection of songs. Gilmour presented the album as a return to earlier Pink Floyd material, which was perhaps a reaction to common critiques of their previous album "The Final Cut" as a Roger Waters solo effort masquerading as a Pink Floyd album. There are a number of well-known session musicians that participated in the making of this album. The album was a commercial success, debuting at number 3 on both the US and UK albums charts. The US tour was the most successful of the year, selling out almost every venue it played in the States. Roger Water's lawsuits would be overcome, and a settlement was reached between Waters and the band by the end of 1987.Lynch brings us this Pink Floyd reboot album for today's podcast and we're joined by guest host Julie Doran joins us on this episode. On the Turning AwayThis power ballad was co-written by Gilmour and British experimental composer Anthony Moore. It is an anti-war song, one of the more political Pink Floyd songs written since the departure of Waters. It begins with a solemn Gilmour vocal supported by understated keyboards, then builds to an almost orchestral conclusion. Learning to FlyA surprisingly upbeat song for the group, the inspiration for this first single is David Gilmour's experience learning to fly airplanes. At the time he would do practice flights in the mornings and work in the studio in the afternoons. It is also a metaphor for the band coming back together after splitting with Roger Waters. One SlipThe fourth US single discusses the long-term consequences of a one-night stand, and contains the lyrics that would become the title to the album as a whole. Gilmour co-wrote this song with Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera. Fans of bassist Tony Levin may recognize his work on a Chapman Stick in the instrumentation for this track. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Real Wild Child by Iggy Pop (from the motion picture “Problem Child”)This dark comedy starring John Ritter follows the trials of Ben Healy Jr. as he adopts a less-than-model child from a questionable adoption agency. STAFF PICKS:Stop by Jane's AddictionWayne leads off the staff picks with a college radio hit off the "Ritual De Lo Habitual" album. Lead singer Perry Farrell warns about apathy towards environmental disaster, telling people to turn off the smokestacks. "And the water will run, come a day, the water will run, no man will stand for things he had done."Brave New World by Michael PennRob brings us a jangly deeper cut with a song with rapid fire lyrics off Penn's "March" album. The song reflects confusion in where the singer is going, perhaps making a commentary on society as it heads into a "brave new world." "This may not be my best day, but this ain't no golden age. You looked pretty on the freeway. Let's drive into the brave new world."Give It Up by Hothouse FlowersBruce features a s song from an Irish group off their second album, "Home." This song that went to number 2 on the US Modern Rock chart is summed up in the lyrics, "Well, this song's inspired by a good man and his tune doing good for others, sing 'Amazing Grace' for you." Rub You the Right Way by Johnny GillJulie's staff pick is an upbeat hip hop song, and Gill's first single after he left New Edition earlier in the year. Despite the lyrics, Gill was the son of a minister and got his start in gospel music. He signed with Motown as a teenager. Gill had become very accustomed to performing live, and had a difficult time switching to studio work. Blue Sky Mine by Midnight OilLynch closes out the staff picks with the first single off Midnight Oil's seventh studio album. The inspiration for the song was the experience of workers in the Wittenoom asbestos mines in western Australia, where they contracted a variety of asbestos-related diseases. The "blue" in the title refers to "blue asbestos," a form of the mineral considered most hazardous. "It's astonishing to me that, despite the blizzard of barbarism currently being visited on them, Palestinians continue to produce such stunning writing. This excellent compilation is essential reading.” The above are the words of praise Brian Eno, long-time activist and one of the most consequential musicians of our time (as evidenced by his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with Roxy Music; and that doesn't even touch on his contributions to electronica and ambient music), heaped on Sumūd: A New Palestinian Reader. Co-edited by Malu Halasa and Jordan Elgrably of The Markaz Review, a literature and arts from the center of the world and the diasporas of the Middle East and North Africa, this volume gives voice to the culture of Palestinians and its relationship to political resistance. On this edition of Parallax Views, Malu Halasa joins us to discuss Sumūd: A New Palestinian Reader and the collection of poetry, visual art of all kinds (from conceptual art to posters), literary criticism, and even speculative fiction/science fiction contained within it. Although many, especially since the war in Gaza, have become aware of the political dimensions of the Palestinian people, Sumūd: A New Palestinian Reader highlights the cultural dimension that is sometimes overlooked. However, that is not to say that the poltiical dimension is ignored in book. In fact, Sumūd: A New Palestinian Reader illustrates the connection, the ties that bind, between the cultural and the political for Palestinians. Contributors to the book include Israeli New Historian Ilan Pappe, noted Gaza expert Sara Roy, Palestinian-American poet Noor Hindi, Paris-based journalist Olivia Snaije, British-Palestinian writer Ahmed Masoud (whose speculative fiction/sci-fi short story "Application 39" is featured in the book and a topic of discussion in our conversation), Gaza's Theater for Everybody founder Hossam Madhoum, and many, many more! We'll discuss a number of topics in this conversation including Gaza, political resistance, Palestinian humor, allowing Palestinian voices to speak for themselves, and much, much more!
