Alex Little steps forward with “Sounds Like A Deal,” the first single from her forthcoming EP Spider in the Sink. A Vancouver-born songwriter with roots in both punk clubs and family record collections, Little distills years of playing, listening, and living into a song that refuses to look away from exploitation and spectacle. The track arrives with all the grit, energy, and sharp-eyed honesty that have made her one of the most compelling voices to emerge from the city's rock underground. Raised between False Creek and Commercial Drive, Little grew up absorbing a wide spectrum of sounds. Her mom played her The Replacements and Bowie, her dad brought The Beatles and Iggy Pop, and early shows included Roxy Music and Tom Jones before she turned ten. She first sat behind the kit in high school and in the punk band Vapid, before moving to the front of the stage with Alex Little and the Suspicious Minds. With Spider in the Sink, she now claims her name as a solo artist, writing songs that are unvarnished, melodic, and lived-in.ALEX LITTLE  ONLINEINSTAGRAM | TIK TOK | BANDCAMP | YOUTUBE Checkout my YouTube Channel with long form interviews from the Subversives | the History of Lowest of the Low. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9d1VSeOHYuxFWKuRdmn9j8UTW6AHwS_fAlso my Weekly Tour Vlog is up an live on the YouTubeshttps://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9d1VSeOHYuwphwhc4zd0VgY66f1OUQZp Pledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca/shopCheck out new Four Square Here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/foursquare/brighton-beach-ephttps://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/foursquare/seven-oh-sevenhttps://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/foursquare/industry-at-home–21st-anniversary-remix-remasteredhttps://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/foursquare/when-weeks-were-weekends

Mick and the PhatMan Talking Music

Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!Well, we made it! 100 episodes & still going strong!  (Except for a bit of a medical interlude for both of us.) Who'd have thought the views of a pair of opinionated Aussie music fans could have entertained so many for so long?   In this episode, we celebrate the artists, music & events we've covered over the last five years.  Mick's habit of tapping the table when he gets excited; Jeff's potty-mouth; The origin of the Globite School Bag as a staple of the program.    We look at where our listeners live – and how on Earth they find out about us!  Revisiting some of your favourite episodes shows how time has proven us right on some of our more strident opinions, such as “Roxy Music peaked in 1973”, and “Warren Zevon is one of the greatest songwriters ever”!  To top it all off, the soundtrack for five years of “Mick & The Phatman Talking Music” is awesome.  You're going to love it!!  See you next year.   Playlist:  100 EpisodesReferences: Globite Bags, music expertise, facts and experiences, “Baby, you can drive my car”, f-word, Roy & H.G., “This Sporting Life”, “Bludging on the Blind Side”, strong music opinions, accessible music, “Revolver”, Kurt Cobain's suicide, Nirvana, Far Out Magazine, 17 years old, Frankfurt, “How Good is Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”, Spandau Ballet, Elton John, Fairport Convention, Richard & Linda Thompson, Sandy Denny, Fotheringay, Robert Plant, "The Battle of Evermore", Led Zeppelin, “Bring it back!  Bring it back!”, Tommy, London Symphony Orchestra, "It's a Boy", Nick Lowe, “What's so funny about peace, love & understanding?”, "Cruel to Be Kind", "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass",  "I Knew the Bride (When She Used to Rock 'n' Roll)", Rockpile, Dave Edmunds, Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, The Pretenders, Jarrah McCleary, Panama, Gordon Ramsay, “Supergroups”, Billy Idol. The Beatles produced five films during their time together: A Hard Day's Night, Help!, Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine, and Let It Be. Some were cinematic successes, and some were not, but―along with subsequent reissues, bonus material, and Peter Jackson's The Beatles: Get Back, a documentary companion to Let It Be―they comprise an endlessly fascinating document of key phases in the group's career. In this comprehensive deep-dive into the band's movies, author and longtime music journalist Steve Matteo follows the origins, filming, and often frenzied fan reception of projects from the 1964 premiere of A Hard Day's Night through 1970's Let It Be to the release of Get Back in 2022. Matteo explores the production process, original theatrical film releases, subsequent VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray releases, and bonus materials, along with the US and UK soundtracks. In addition to copious anecdotes and behind-the-scenes details, he also places these films in their larger context, a period of unprecedented artistic and commercial innovation in British and world cinema. Filled with stories and insights that will satisfy collectors, buffs, and casual fans alike, this is the definitive account of an underappreciated part of the Beatles' creative output. It's the end, the end of the Seventies. It was a decade that had started with Edison Lighthouse and ended with Another Brick in the wall. After 221 number one singles, the decade that had given us everything from Bowie to Bell bottoms, from Chopper bikes to Chiquitita, Glam to Punk, and Sapphire to Steel, was closing down - and at a sensible hour too!On the 31st December 1979, Kenny Everett asked the (more discerning) viewers on ITV, if he would indeed make it 1980. With the iconic help of Roxy Music, David Bowie, The Boomtown Rats and many more, he just about crossed over into that new decade. But really listens, the future was already with us.And yes, 1979 did seem rather grim - a winter of discontent, political upheaval, TV strikes and terrorism. But isn't this exactly the kind of period when popular culture and significantly POP, POP, POP MUZIK comes to save us all? The kids were indeed, alright! So, in the company of some very special guests - singer/songwriter and pop legend Nick Heyward and Record Collector's very own Daryl Easlea - as we revisit the cultural tsunami that is the NOW Yearbook 1979. Rediscover a glittering embarrassment of 7” smashes from the likes of Sparks, Chic, Blondie, Squeeze, Ian Dury & the Blockheads, Roxy Music. The list, just like the glorious pages of Daryl's 1979 diary goes on and on.As well as sharing his fabulous boxset, 1993–1998: The Epic & Creation Years, Nick tells us about how important 1979 was in shaping his own musical journey. From the early days of (what would become) Haircut 100, to rediscovering kitchen sink somewhere up a junction, to defining a look and sound as the seventies morphed into the eighties. We explore the sounds of 1979 - from XTC to The Knack, from Rainbow to Sad Cafe (yes, really!), how punk was evolving into New wave, which was evolving into New Pop which… (yes, we get the idea: Ed)And also how video wasn't exactly killing the radio star, but through visuals a new age was really dawning for pop. So, lets take a One Way Ticket, One Step Beyond some Parisienne Walkways (we're not keeping these in! Ed)1979.Wow, indeed. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

As stated at numerous points in this episode, a lot of the things discussed here can be found in the documentary Goodbye Horses: The Many Lives of Q Lazzarus. We urge you to go check out that film here: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/qlazzarus as it is a brilliant piece of work. For long time pod fans, this episode could technically be classed as part of our unsong series. But the reality is that the story of Q Lazzarus is so interesting, that it simply bursts out of the constraints of that format. Q Lazzarus/Diane Luckey, is best known for the song "Goodbye Horses", a track that you've almost certainly heard at some point in your life. It's most notable use was in the Jonathan Demme classic Silence of the Lambs, but it has been used in a bunch of films since then, and covered by an array of artists. It is, in fact, that only "official" release by Q Lazzarus. She would later go on to appear in Demme's next film, the wonderful Philadelphia, singing a cover of Roxy Music's classic tune "Heaven". After that, though, she would simply vanish from the industry entirely. So what happened? Why did this seemingly promising up and coming artist, who had two huge brushes with fame, suddenly disappear without trace? Well, it's a rather complicated, and compelling, story that touches on industry discrimination, artist exploitation, and the music business's treatment of unique talents. This week we dive into that story, with the help of a remarkable documentary film called Goodbye Horses: The Many Lives of Q Lazzarus - a film that came about through an almost impossibly serendipitous encounter between filmmaker Eva Aridjis Fuentes and her mysterious subject. The documentary is available on Vimeo and you should absolutely check it out for yourself, alongside the Sacred Bones compilation of her previously unreleased works. Please note that this story deals with some heavy themes and doesn't have the resolution we might hope for, but it's an important and deeply affecting tale that deserves to be told. Poor old Johnnie Ray.Actually, I wonder what the heart wrenching vocal superstar of the fifties made of his starring role in the biggest selling single of 1982, thirty years after his own chart topping run? Did anyone ever ask how he felt watching the footage of his younger self in the video for Come On Eileen intertwined with Kevin's dungaree festooned Emerald Express on a London street corner. Perhaps, as he was famous for doing, he cried. I hope Mr Rowland at least sent him a thank you note. So, welcome back to 1982!Were you there in those now gone days of pop perfection? Did you dance in the ra-ra skirt to Duran Duran at the school disco? Did you shed a tear as The Jam called it a day on the new Channel Four pop weekly The Tube, even though Paul knew well(er) what the next chapter held for his newly formed council. Or perhaps the Smash Hits of over forty years ago exist for you in playlists and radio schedules discovered since. Either way, the NOW Yearbook (and Extra volume) welcomes you with a neon smile to bring together over 140 hits, memories, misses and otherwise that sum up a stellar twelve months of pop. And as 1981's steely electronic winter defrosted, a new pop was emerging. Duran, Spandau, Culture, Club, Wham!, Haircut 100 and a dazzling cast of many more were turning the colour back up on their (three channel) TV sets. Whilst the technology that gloriously gave us the new romantic sounds of 1981 was still driving the decade forward, suddenly we were taking ourselves, well, a bit less seriously. Pop was fun again as seen in the ever evolving, cheerleading extravaganza that was Top of The Pops. The charts were indeed alive to the possibilities of much more. Trevor Horn's hit production machine was digitising our delights with the sounds of ABC, Dollar and even the Appalachian hip-hop of Malcolm McLaren's Buffalo Gals. Seventies survivors such as Hot Chocolate, Roxy Music, ABBA, Marvin Gaye and others were upping their game and embracing - gasp - synthesisers! And you know what, it was sounding and looking (thanks to glossy videos) AMAZING.And across the pond in the US of A? Well, we were importing them our own brand of fabulous pop and they were sending us ROCK in the form of Steve Miller, Survivor and J Geils - but even that was, well, shiny and new. What was indeed going on?To quote Smash Hits (snip!) editor David Hepworth, there were, he said, “no patterns” to pop in 1982. Join chief editor of electrictyclub.co.uk Chi Ming Lai and author of 1984: The Year Pop Went Queer Ian Wade as we dive back into a fascinating twelve months of pop as chronicled in the NOW Yearbook 1982. Amongst many other things, discover which star(s) were upsetting the Musician's Union, find out more about the language of Smash Hits and how we need it more than ever, why old was the new New, learn about the NEXT BIG genre that you need in your life (Elegant Futurism!), why Germany was giving us EVERYTHING, and discover what Haysi Fantaysee were really up to on TOTP (if you dare!).The 1982 Yearbook - Hi Fidelity indeed! Today's guest hates traffic as much as I do. Plus he helped invent an entire genre of music. Welcome David J. Haskins to the podcast. He has a new album out, but you may also recognize him from his previous bands, Bauhaus and Love And Rockets. His love of music began with reggae and sneaking into clubs when he was a kid. His biggest inspirations were Bowie, Marc Bolan, and Roxy Music. He started off playing guitar but switched to bass when music started getting serious. Daid talks about early bands and getting banned from venues. He also reveals when and how he switched to fretless bass. It's a pretty funny story. He also talks about writing Bauhaus' most well-known song, Bela Lugosu's Dead. Once Bauhaus ended, Love and Rockets begins. David discusses that transition and where the bands broke first. David has had an impressive solo career and he has a new album, The Mother Tree. It's a unique album, both in its concept and its execution. The album is beautiful and touching. It also has a companion book of poetry. Go to davidjhaskins.com to grab both. Check out his social media links while you're there. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on socials. Brian Eno Knows “What Art Does”

In the music business, Brian Eno is a name to conjure with. He's been the producer of tremendous hits by U2, Talking Heads, David Bowie, Grace Jones, Coldplay, and many other top artists. But he's also a conceptualist, nicknamed Professor Eno in the British music press, and a foundational figure in ambient music—a genre whose very name Eno coined. Amanda Petrusich speaks with Eno about his two new albums that just came out, “Luminal” and “Lateral,” and his new book, “What Art Does.” “One of the realizations I had when I was writing this book is that really the only product of art is feelings,”  Eno says. “Its main point is to make your feelings change—is to give you feelings that you perhaps didn't have before or did have before and want to have again or want to experiment with. So it seems very simplistic to say, ‘Oh, it's all about feelings.' But actually I think it is. Feelings are overlooked by all of those people who think bright children shouldn't do art.”

Political Beats
Episode 145: Andrew Stuttaford / Brian Eno

Political Beats

Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by Andrew Stuttaford. Andrew needs little introduction as the editor of NR's Capital Matters. Find him online right here at National Review or at @AStuttaford on Twitter/X.Andrew's Music Pick: Brian EnoHere he comes, the boy who tried to vanish to the future or the past. Yes, it's time for Political Beats to celebrate one of the most influential musicians in the history of modern recorded sound -- a man who, ironically enough, is at pains to characterize himself as a non-musician. Children of the Eighties and Nineties may primarily understand Brian Eno as the producer who took U2 to megastardom, but his work as a producer is properly only a footnote to his work as a songwriter and (most importantly of all) a conceptualist. Eno first achieved fame with Roxy Music as their "noise man," providing outrageous sounds alongside "treatments" -- electronic reprocessing -- of the rest of the group's instruments. But Roxy Music was ultimately pianist/vocalist Bryan Ferry's baby, and so Eno soon struck out on his own, for a solo career that would bring him into collaboration with some of the best and most innovative musicians of the Seventies as he put out a sequence of four "lyrical" albums which bent the definition of "popular music" well past its breaking point and into the avant-garde. At the same time, Eno was creating an entirely new genre of recorded sound: so-called "ambient" music, written and recorded in such a way as to (per his maxim) "reward your attention without demanding it."This, of course, is only the tip of the iceberg in a career that also includes brilliant songwriting collaborations with Robert Fripp, David Bowie, and Talking Heads among others. All of this and much more are discussed on a episode Political Beats has been waiting to do for eight years: Brian Eno played an enormous role in inventing the sonic world we still live in, and also made some of the most unexpectedly profound and beautiful music while doing so. We are lucky to be joined by NR's own Andrew Stuttaford for this episode, who lends particular credibility to the discussion as a fan from all the way back in 1972, during the Roxy years. Enjoy stepping into another (green) world.
