This week we discuss the TKO comic Sara by Garth Ennis and Steve Epting, colors by Elizabeth BreitweiserBut first, why did Cody have a head in his bag? And who put it there? How did Cody lose his voice? What did Jake do for his birthday? Was World War II Russia a chill place? Would Sara make a good movie? Did this comic have Velvet vibes? Does color play a big role in this comic? Could Sara take out Johnny Five from Short Circuit? Is Sara the goat sniper? Does this comic have Inglorious Basterds vibes? Is now the perfect time to hunt Nazis? Does one of the members of Sara's squad represent Death? Did the Russian military lie to Sara? Is this comic historically accurate? Was this more of a character study than an action comic? Did this story have Saving Private Ryan vibes? Is TKO still in business? What other TKO comics do we like? Is Sara a masterpiece? Does the art outweigh the story? How does this compare to other Garth Ennis comics? Who would we cast as a live-action Sara? Should we cover James Bond on the podcast? What was the most brutal scene in the comic? Is this a comic geared towards dads? Is this the kind of comic you can give to non-comic book readers? What is Queen & Country? How is Sara like a ronin? Did Sara take out the Bradley Cooper of German snipers? Is this the Sisterhood of the Traveling Snipers? Why is Cody threatening our listeners yet again?Check out our website: https://www.comicsandchronic.com/New episodes every THURSDAYFollow us on social media! Steve Epting sticks around for one more issue as Kurt Busiek surprises us all in bringing back one of the 90'siest characters to ever 90s, Bloodwraith! And then the next art team of Alan Davis and Mark Farmer arrive to help usher in a new era for the team!
After what seems like forever, we're back to the main title, with not nearly as many side trips, since the limited series are going to be pretty...limited for the remainder of this Avengers volume. We start out by checking in on the crew from Avengers: Infinity as they collide with the current Marvel crossover, Maximum Security! And then former Avengers artist Steve Epting returns to help us move some subplots forward!
This week on Comics and Chronic we discuss Velvet by Ed Brubaker & art by Steve Epting published by Image Comics. “From the best-selling creators of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER comes VELVET, a slick and sexy new take on the cold war spy genre. What if the secretary to the man running the world's most top secret spy agency was actually their most dangerous weapon, once upon a time?”But first the boys discuss underwater aliens, James Cameron's role in 9/11, and Immaculate Constellation. Mike Tyson & Jake Paul were used a distraction from the under water aliens/congress hearing. Operation Sleepy Baby is uncovered. This book has hard James Bond vibes with a strong female lead. A lot of real life references to historical espionage history. Becky 2: The Beckoning is coming to theaters near you! Once you start reading this book you won't be able to put it down. We come up with a new sound effect for the sound board specifically made for Cody's thinking. This is Brubaker at his best. Everyone agrees this is one of the best comics we've read. Why does Ed Brubaker end a lot of his stories with someone by the beach? Will we delve deep into the origins of the Blue Waffle STD? This week we return to "Thunderbolts Volume 1: Justice, Like Lightning," by Kurt Busiek, Mark Bagley, Sal Buscema, Peter David, Mike Deodato Jr., Steve Epting, and others. We look deeper into the main cast of the series, and propose a wish list of changes (thirty years too late). We'll see henchmen doing hench things, learn about incels and doxxing before those terms existed, talk about mall gothery, and discuss the importance of metaphors for six year olds. Music by Sleuth. Our next episode will be on "As the Crow Flies" by Mel Gillman
This is the first part of a two-parter on "Thunderbolts Volume 1: Justice, Like Lightning," by such people as Kurt Busiek, Mark Bagley, Sal Buscema, Peter David, Mike Deodato Jr., and Steve Epting. We brave the Marvel Universe in the mid 90s to ask important questions like, what happens when a gang of super-villains switches sides? Are nazis real? What happens when the biggest comics publisher goes bankrupt? And, what's the deal with the “Marvel Method?” Buckle up, true believers! Music by Sleuth. Our next episode will continue the discussion on "Thunderbolts."

In which the Mister joins me in reviewing CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (2014), from directors Anthony and Joe Russo and a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely and based off Marvel characters created by Joe Simon and artist Jack Kirby. The "Winter Soldier" storyline by Steve Epting, Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark is also credited. Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America (Chris Evans) returns in the thrilling second film of the Captain America trilogy. After Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is assassinated, and he is branded a fugitive and hunted by SHIELD, the story masterfully combines the espionage/thriller genres with the super hero story to tell a compelling story where Cap must confront his past to discover the truth behind a sinister conspiracy to take over the world. The film clocks in at 2 h and 46 m, is rated PG-13 and can be found streaming currently on Max. Rhythm & Blues. Gospel. Hip Hop. Rock & Roll. These genres are the soundtrack and backdrop to the black experience. They speak to us, and we speak through them literally and physically as instruments that help us say it loud, we're black and we're proud. On this episode of the Jigsaw, Josh and Bryan close out United Negro Music Appreciation month by inviting the multi-talented and hyphenated Steve Epting to the Living Room to discuss his transition from the church choir stand, to arenas performing with icons and legends. Also, he answers the question of if Hip Hop & R&B are dead and if so, how can they be resurrected. Oh, and someone said that Beyoncé could never measure up to Ashanti. Find out who. Bubba and Robert break down Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting's spy espionage comic Velvet. Recommendations from the crew this month are Chew and Lazarus, both published by Image Comics.
Fan Expo Dallas was held May 29-31, and this year Derek was there in Artists Alley talking with a variety of creators. Some of those he spoke with are famous names and individuals who have been on the show before. Others were new to him and, and Derek used the opportunity to introduce himself and Comics Alternative listeners to their fascinating works. He begins by talking with two artists who have spoken with him at various cons in the past, Robert Wilson IV and Joe Eisma. The latter shares his experiences having illustrated Bitch Planet #3, the amount of attention that has brought him, and his warm relationship with Kelly Sue DeConnick. Robert also follows up on the success of Knuckleheads, which was released as a book last summer from IDW. Joe Eisma talks not only about his most recent work on Morning Glories, now in its second "season," but also about doing a variant cover for the relaunch of Archie. After that, Derek speaks with two teams of creators whose work he has just discovered. Through Stephen G. Totten and his friend Mike, he learns about the webcomic Angry Cuddles, and how this work (written by Stephen and illustrated by Joseph A. Valero III) has recently become a video podcast. Derek also talks with Mark Schmidt, publisher of Stratum Comics, and his partner, Vince Chuter. Their title, The Threat, is an action comic reminiscent of Heroes placed in a Judge Dredd-type universe. Next, Derek talks with Steve Epting about Velvet -- the second trade has recently been released -- and the kind of fan response he's been getting at the con. Steve shares a few words about working with Ed Brubaker on this creator-owned title as well as their collaboration on Captain America and Winter Soldier. After that, Jemma Young introduces Derek to her webcomic, Children of Eldair, her collaboration with its writer, Rachel A. Oaks, the title's dedicated fanbase, and the challenges of putting out installments on a regular basis. Derek also meets Hector Rodriguez whose El Peso Hero, published through Rio Bravo Comics, is a potent mixture of superhero stories, sociopolitical commentary, and an exploration of race relations on the Southwestern border. Finally, Derek wraps up with Ellen Natalie, whose webcomic Furry Experience provides a glimpse into young adult experiences as they relate to religion, relationships, and coming of age. This was a particularly busy convention, and The Comics Alternative thanks all of these creators for taking the time to share their thoughts and experiences with its listeners.
