Ferne Pearlstein is a director, cinematographer, and editor based in New York City. Her most recent film is “XCLD: THE STORY OF CANCEL CULTURE,” a nuanced look at this controversial topic, produced by Trevor Noah and Time Studios for MSNBC's Turning Point series. As a director and producer, with husband and producing partner Robert Edwards, she has had four features premiere at Tribeca, including SUMO EAST AND WEST and the narratives LAND OF THE BLIND starring Ralph Fiennes and Donald Sutherland, and ONE MORE TIME starring Christopher Walken. The most recent of those four features was the critically acclaimed THE LAST LAUGH (2016) about taboos in humor. We chat about her early inspirations and career; her films; the film business today; cancel vs consequence culture; and whether there are or should be subjects that are off limits in comedy. While we catch up on Ferne's latest projects, we also focus on her 2016 feature film, THE LAST LAUGH, which is all about finding humor in a crisis seen through the lens of the Holocaust. As we try to deal with and wrap our heads around the COVID-19 nightmare, many have been connecting to THE LAST LAUGH, to help us cope with this crisis and, for that matter, this new normal. There's lots to talk about in this open, frank, and yes, upbeat conversation.

This week on Unorthodox, we’re still trying to find those Holocaust centers Sean Spicer was talking about. Our Jewish guest is filmmaker Ferne Pearlstein, whose latest documentary, The Last Laugh, asks comedians like Mel Brooks and Sarah Silverman whether or not we can joke about the Holocaust. She tells us why she decided to tackle such a taboo topic, how gallows humor can be a survival mechanism, and whether it matters if the joke-teller is Jewish or not. The Last Laugh premieres Monday, April 24 on Independent Lens on PBS. Our Gentile of the Week is Ashley McKinless, associate editor at America magazine, the Jesuit Review of Faith and Culture. She co-hosts the new podcast Jesuitical, which we lovingly call the Catholic version of Unorthodox. She explains who the Jesuits are, tells us about life as a 20-something practicing Catholic in New York City, and confirms that Liel is the only Leibovitz currently subscribed to America magazine. When director Ferne Pearlstein set out to make her documentary The Last Laugh, she had a unique and delicate task before her; she wanted to highlight the subject of when and if it's okay to laugh about traumatic events in society, like the Holocaust. She and her cinematographer Anne Etheridge handled the task with extreme care and respect and created a balanced film about how humans can use humor to deal with something that's not funny. In this episode, Ferne and Anne discuss the challenges and rewards of approaching this important subject. lastlaughfilm.us
