The IfG team headed to Birmingham to explore how mayors can secure and deliver private investment into their regions in pursuit of growth and regeneration. The IfG DevoLab is a new initiative from the Institute for Government dedicated to exploring the innovations enabled by devolution, learning from the results, and sharing the lessons so that places can take better decisions about how to use devolved powers and budgets. IfG DevoLab #2 saw speakers from three regions – West Midlands, Greater Manchester, and the North East – set out how the powers and profile of mayors and the convening role of strategic authorities have been used to secure and deliver private investment for key regional strategic projects. ‘Investing in the West Midlands: The Birmingham Sports Quarter', Jonathan Gibson, Interim Director of Strategy at the West Midlands Combined Authority ‘Investing in Greater Manchester: The Sister Innovation District, Robert Edwards, Deputy Director of Investment at the Greater Manchester Combined Authority ‘Investing in the North East', Dr Henry Kippin, Chief Executive of the North East Combined Authority The three presenters were joined on the panel by Julia Goldsworthy, Head of Social Impact Investment at L&G, and former Director of Strategy at West Midlands Combined Authority, for a broader discussion on the benefits of devolution and mayoral leadership, the lessons less mature devolved regions can learn from those further along in the journey, and whether further devolution can accelerate growth. This event was chaired by Akash Paun, Programme Director at the Institute for Government, with an introduction by Hannah White, CEO of the Institute for Government. Insights from this discussion informed a published policy briefing containing the three case studies and a synthesis of key lessons. The Institute for Government would like to thank L&G for its support of this event and its wider support of the IfG DevoLab series. Learn more about your ad choices. In the 1990s, young women began vanishing from Perth’s wealthy suburb of Claremont. The disappearances sparked fear across the city, and launched Australia’s longest-running homicide investigation. For nearly two decades, the Claremont Serial Killer remained a mystery. Then, advances in DNA technology cracked the case wide open. In this episode of Crime Insiders Judgements, we go into the courtroom to hear the judge's determination that saw Bradley Robert Edwards convicted of two murders, but acquitted of the third. To celebrate the release on Netflix of the new film about IVF 'Joy' this is an old episode of The Fertility Podcast, which Natalie produced in celebration of Louise Brown's 40th Birthday and the fact that at that point in time, over 300,000 babies have been born through IVF treatment with more than 1 million cycles having taken place. TheHFEA asked Natalie to make a podcast with them, so Natalie is in conversation with its chair Sally Cheshire and one of its Inspectors, a lady called Janet Kirkland MacHattie, who worked as a nurse at Bourne Hall in 1982, under Patrick Steptoe, Robert Edwards and Jean Purdy. In fact, it was during this conversation with Janet, that Natalie first learnt about Jean, and found herself feeling somewhat ashamed that she didn't know about her sooner! What was discussed: Sally Cheshire talked about how at the time the treatment was quite experimental and Louise Brown's parents were quite brave in putting themselves forward She explains how the Government and Parliament decided to investigate how treatment should be regulated and asked Mary Warnock to form a committee in 1984 to look at how infertility should be regulated. The law came into being in 1990 and the HFEA came to be in 1991. Sally talked about her role at the HFEA and what has changed over the last 40 years and the importance of the focus of its work being on the 70% of people who aren't successful with their treatment. The HFEA has a vital role, thinking about how emotional support can be improved in clinics because, as she explains 'We do know that even if you are pregnant after IVF there's a level of anxiety you carry with you". The importance of being medically, emotionally and financially equipped to try again when going through fertility treatment. Sally explained how 'We still feel a lot of media stories about fertility treatment are positive… very often, there's a lot of around celebrities with the example of Bridget Neilson who gave birth at 54. Are they being truthful about using donor eggs? Some of those stories give you a false impression." Janet explained how she went for the job at Bourn Hall, to join the nursing team - not really knowing what was involved and when she asked Patrick Steptoe his advice on a book she could read to learn more, his reply was 'My dear, they've not been written yetWhat the treatment process was like initially, with Ladies staying at Bourn Hall for ten day periods and how as they didn't have blood tests, the Ladies urine was tested every three hours to find out if they were ovulating.Janet talked about an interview Patrick Steptoe gave where he spoke about his vision for the future being "centres set up where people have been properly trained and this technique will be available to women all over the world" To compare clinics like for like, or rate your clinic visit the HFEA website Follow @YourFertilityNurse on InstagramFollow @TheFertilityPodcast on Instagram
Back to The Fertility Podcast archive for this episode to celebrate the release of the Netflix movie 'Joy' - Natalie has shared a conversation she had Connie Orbach about how she started her research to curate the British Science Museum's exhibition about the story of IVF.What was discussed: Connie herself admitted how she didn't realize how much content she would find in the archives from Leslie Brown, regarding the correspondence she received from all around the world.Connie talked about Jean Purdy who I've learned all about over the last couple of weeks and she is talked about as being IVF's forgotten pioneer, despite being written about by Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards as one of the three of them. Connie has written a really good blog here Jean was hired as a lab technician however she was tasked with managing the laboratory and in reality, she did much more. Jean Purdy was not just central to the running of the lab but also to the scientific work. Connie and I spoke about whether her gender meant she was taken less seriously by reporters? Possibly, seeing as she was recorded in the photos as being the 'midwife'. Was her role as a lab technician seen as unimportant next to that of the surgeon and the scientist? This is so ironic seeing as she is credited with first discovering the blastocyst embryo stage, one of the key breakthroughs in our understanding of an embryo's development.Whatever the reason, it was not for lack of trying from Edwards. He repeatedly emphasized Purdy's importance and unsuccessfully lobbied her name to be added to the commemorative plaque placed at the site of their original clinic. Read more in Connie's blog and here are some other articles that are written for the exhibitionSally Cheshire, chair of the HFEA has also written a blog for the exhibition. On the 100th anniversary of George Mallory and Sandy Irvine's death on Mount Everest, I interviewed Dr. Robert Edwards, author of Mallory, Irvine, and Everest: The Last Step But One, which reexamined their mysterious story in extreme detail. Watch my original interview with Dr. Edwards, my most popular interview in 2024. It provides an excellent background for today's interview. Today, Dr. Edwards returns to the WanderLearn Show to discuss Jimmy Chin's surprising October 2024 announcement that he found Andrew Comyn Irvine's foot! Andrew Irvine's nickname was Sandy. Watch the Video Photo by National Geographic Image copyright: National Geographic National Geographic sponsored the expedition and announced the momentous news. The rest of Sandy's body has not been found yet. Sandy died 100 years ago. In 1960, Chinese climber Wang Fuzhou claimed he spotted a dead European climber who had to be Sandy Irvine. Assuming that sighting was accurate, nobody has seen Irvine since then ... until now. Famed mountaineer and photographer Jimmy Chin found Sandy's foot inside the 100-year-old boot. Robert Edwards wrote his initial impressions of Sandy's discovery on Goodreads. In this interview, we delve into greater detail, including the map Dr. Edwards made: In the podcast, I struggled to understand why Dr. Edwards thought Sandy's foot may have been found either in pin v1 or v2. After the interview, I reflected more carefully and realized that the Central Rongbuk Glacier is sliding west (right in the image). I initially assumed it was sliding north (down the image). Excerpt of Dr. Edwards's Goodreads post I can think of at least two scenarios which are consistent with the new discovery: • On June 8, 1924, Irvine fell from somewhere on the North Face of Everest to the head of the Central Rongbuk Glacier. If so, it seems to me that, given the topography of Mount Everest, the start of that fall had to be either within, or to the west of, the Norton Couloir. In that case, Irvine fell at least 500 meters to the west of where Mallory's body was found. • On June 8, 1924, Irvine became immobilised or died in the place where on May 24 or 25, 1960, the Chinese mountaineer Wang Fu-zhou would see the body of “a European in braces” [for North Americans: suspenders]. The Chinese route was along the Northeast Ridge. According to reports of a speech in Leningrad in 1965, Wang saw the body at 8,600 meters (28,215 feet): that is, between the Second Step and the Third Step. If so, the body could only be that of Irvine; and he had died on the descent. In this scenario, at some unknowable date after 1960, natural events carried Irvine's body down the mountain to the head of the glacier. In both scenarios, the implacable creep of the ice carried part of Irvine's remains to the place where Jimmy Chin found them in September 2024. The first scenario excludes the second: for if in 1924 Irvine fell to the glacier, Wang Fu-zhou in 1960 could not have seen a body of any kind at 8,600 meters. No doubt, other scenarios are conceivable. What next? Undoubtedly, the China-Tibet Mountaineering Association will conduct an expedition to find the rest of Irvine's body and any artifacts associated with it; or will permit National Geographic to undertake such an endeavour. The search could possibly be made before the winter; otherwise, the next window will probably be the spring of 2025. Irvine's body and artifacts will surely be found. The Chinese authorities also have the opportunity to examine Irvine's boot for rock particles, which might reveal where he had been before he died. (As far as I can determine, Mallory's boots were never tested in this way.) In either event, we may then know more about the last climb of Mallory and Irvine. Dr. Edwards added in an email to me: In case I didn't explain clearly the difference between the two pins in the Google Earth image: pin v1 is based on ice velocity of 10 meters/year; pin v2 is based on ice velocity of 27 meters/year (based on a range of Chinese estimates for the East Rongbuk Glaicier). In both cases, the pin assumes movement of the remains over 100 years, i.e. assuming that Irvine fell all the way to the glacier in 1924. So Pin v1 is 1,000 meters downstream; pin v2 is 2,700 meters downstream. If Irvine's remains fell after 1960 (which, given Wang's sighting, I'm inclined to think more probable), both pins would be much closer to the head of the glacier. Pin v1 would be at most 640 meters downstream; pin v2 would be at most 1,728 meters downstream. Both pins hug the western rim of the glacier, since I'm inclined to think that objects starting near the rim will remain near the rim. (A glaciologist would know.)
Escuchar audio

Wow. If you want the most comprehensive study of George Mallory's 3rd and final climb up Mt. Everest, read this book! The book Mallory, Irvine, and Everest: The Last Step But One by Dr. Robert Edwards examines the mystery surrounding George Mallory and Andrew Irvine's 1924 attempt to reach the summit of Mount Everest. The book provides a fresh and original perspective on this historical event, as the author is a mathematician who has applied modern analysis techniques to the available evidence. Dr. Edwards has thoroughly researched the contemporary accounts, letters, and artifacts related to the climb and has identified inconsistencies in previous narratives. The book's release coincides with the 100th anniversary of Mallory and Irvine's fateful expedition and offers unique insights. Mountaineering experts Jochen Hemmleb and Thom Dharma Pollard have praised its potential to shed new light on whether Mallory and Irvine were the first to conquer Everest. This unique perspective is sure to enlighten the audience. Mallory picked a strong, young, inexperienced climbing partner, Andrew Irvine, to push to the summit. Video interview with the author, Robert Edwards SPOILER #1: Nobody knows if either one of them made it. And this book doesn't offer a definitive answer either. However, this book will enthrall you if you want to learn what the most meticulous researcher has discovered. For example, Edwards spends pages examining everything about the mysterious ice ax found high on the mountain. SPOILER #2: The ax is almost certainly Irvine's or Malory's, but we don't know which one. The author concludes that it was placed there and didn't tumble or drop there accidentally. What I love about this book is that Edwards lets the evidence speak. Although he speculates, he admits when he's speculating to let the reader reach their conclusion. After reading this excellent book and interviewing the author, here's my best guess as to what happened: Mallory probably reached the summit late in the afternoon, forcing him to descend at night. When investigators found his corpse in 1999, Mallory's sunglasses were in his pocket, indicating he descended at night. He ran out of oxygen, which sapped his strength and heat just when he needed to stay warm at nightfall. He had few clothes compared to modern climbers. Without oxygen, he got disoriented and wobbly. His judgment worsened. One slip was all it took to break his leg and slide down to his resting spot, where he was found decades later. This hypothesis is my speculation, not the book's. Get the book, and judge for yourself. WARNING: This book may bore people with only a passing interest in this topic. VERDICT: 5 out of 5 stars! Robert Edwards specializes in delivering consulting and training for company executives to understand how to optimally price their products and services, monetize their products, maximize value generation and extraction from their product portfolio, and develop their promotions and competitive strategy to increase profit. He holds a PhD in Pricing and Competitive Strategy. In this episode, Robert shares how to simplify your pricing and effectively communicate its benefits and what value it generates. What you will learn from this episode: Understand how to use price to generate value for your product or services Learn to use pricing to attract the customers you want Find out about the connection between behavioral economics and pricing "Creating value for your pricing could be an extra dimension to what we talk about regularly when we're thinking about designing our products and pricing those products." - Robert Edwards Topics Covered: 01:25 - How he found his route into pricing 03:15 - Discussing the idea about complicated and simple pricing 04:55 - How Ryanair creates a perception of simple pricing 05:55 - Why make your pricing simple 07:04 - Robert's important thoughts on creating value for your pricing 08:48 - How to add value through pricing 10:42 - LinkedIn as an example in the way of creating value and not just extracting value 14:34 - Thinking in terms of the buyer composition and not just the number of units bought 16:35 - Examples that uses price to attract the customers you want 19:50 - An example that uses pricing as an attention grabber to make all else reasonable 21:09 - A case of sellers focusing on different dimensions in attracting customers and not just pricing 22:57 - How pricing and behavioral economics tie into each other 25:36 - Considering behavioral economics at the beginning rather than at the end of the pricing process 26:18 - Understanding the pricing strategy around rebates 27:01 - Using value-based pricing and having the clarity of message why you're pricing in such a way Key Takeaways: "I would definitely recommend in a lot of cases simplifying your prices adds value to the products and service that you're offering because consumers have a really strong preference for this as well." - Robert Edwards "Behavioral economics is increasingly at the heart of real pricing strategies because you can design a pricing strategy with rational consumers in mind, and it completely does not work the way you intended because consumers have these biases and they're susceptible to framing effects." - Robert Edwards "A lot of the companies that I speak to, there's an opportunity to add value to their product by using a different pricing metric. And the only reason that pricing metric is really valuable is because of the behavioral biases of the consumers." - Robert Edwards People / Resources Mentioned: Ryanair: https://www.ryanair.com/gb/en LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/ Subway:https://www.subway.com/en-us Connect with Robert Edwards: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/edwardsra/ Connect with Mark Stiving: Email: mark@impactpricing.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stiving/

At approximately 8:13 p.m. on November 24th, 1971, a hijacker exited Northwest Airlines flight 305 at an altitude of 10,000 feet, carrying just a case, a bagful of money, and a parachute. The subsequent investigation became one of the largest and strangest in the FBI's history. But was what the true identity of the man who called himself D.B. Cooper? And could he still out there, living among us? This is a Short History of D.B. Cooper. Written by Joe Viner. With thanks to Robert Edwards, author of the book D.B. Dr. Geoffrey Sher is joining me again, and this time we are going to talk about implantation failure during IVF. Dr. Sher is co-founder of Sher Fertility Solutions (SFS) and an internationally renowned expert in the field of assisted reproductive technology, and influential in the births of more than 17,000 IVF babies. One day I hope that I'll be able to say the same thing about myself. Over the last 30 years, he has helped fashion the entire field of ART after training under the fathers of IVF, Dr. Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards. He established the first private IVF program in the United States in 1982, then later expanded his practice to include several centers throughout California before founding the first Sher Fertility Solutions in Las Vegas. He's also the author of several books, In Vitro Fertilization: The ART of Making Babies, which is now in its third edition. In this episode, we're talking about implantation failure during IVF. Many times I wonder why embryos do not stick and grow. Dr. Sher is discussing the role of the endometrium, the difference between implantation and miscarriage, and the three factors he considers when advising on treatment for implantation failure. Running your own practice may feel glamorous, and many start their own or purchase one thinking it's going to be easy. However, although there are many ups, there are times when you may find yourself in many downs. What are some things you can do to really embrace the role of an employer and build your practice the right away? The team at Edwards & Associates is discussing some tips for employers in this week's episode. Robert Edwards shares his experience running his own company in addition to the things he didn't anticipate being potential issues. For example, finding clients wasn't hard for him, the difficult part was building the right team. Plus one of the biggest challenges employers face is once you find the right team, letting go of control to let them thrive. They also talk about the importance of learning to be flexible in all aspects of your business and continuing to have the right mindset even when things aren't going your way. If you have specific questions about help in running your practice or questions about being an employer in general, or if you'd like to have another question answered on a future podcast, please make sure tohttps://eandassociates.com/book-a-meeting-dental-cpa/?nowprocket=1 ( reach out to the Edwards & Associates team). Multi-instrumentalist John Mahon's early days were based in drums, recording and performing jazz, progressive jazz, rock, R&B and pop music with bands in Northeastern Ohio. Moving to Los Angeles in 1983, he continued to play and study music. John has studied with David Garibaldi, Robert Edwards and at the Dick Grove School of Music along with many other teachers around the globe. As a singer and drummer, John was featured with the band Windows and went from there to record and tour with Peter White. This led to tours and gigs with Al Stewart, Helen Reddy, Boney James and Rita Coolidge. As a percussionist and vocalist, John backed up Three Dog Night's Chuck Negron. Before joining Elton's band, John's own band, The Stickmen, included future Elton bassist Bob Birch. As a writer, producer and programmer John has composed soundtrack albums for Wild Whirled Music, smooth jazz songs with Rick Braun and produced commercials for Ray Charles. John was originally hired for the Elton John Band as a percussionist, but during tour rehearsals it was discovered that he could add his vocal talents to the mix — and now John is often spotlighted in concert as a harmony vocalist on songs like Daniel and Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word. eltonjohn.com/the-band/john-mahon
