Escuchar audio
For a while after October 7, the war produced an atmosphere of national solidarity in Israel, quieting some of the tensions that had divided Israelis from one another with a special intensity throughout the previous year. That quiet now seems to be ending. There was always bound to be a tension between two of the Israeli government's primary war aims: that of rescuing the hostages, and that of defeating Hamas until total victory. The government insists that it is pursuing both of these aims, but many Israelis don't believe it. Many of them are persuaded that Prime Minister Netanyahu is prolonging the war and foregoing opportunities to secure the hostages' freedom because the war keeps his political coalition together and that keeps him in power. Tens of thousands of Israelis, mapping more or less onto the tens of thousands of judicial-reform opponents seen last year, are now in the streets protesting. Then when, last weekend, the bodies of six more murdered hostages were retrieved from Rafah, the anger overflowed its bounds and spilled out onto the streets. In the protestors' view, it was Netanyahu who could have prevented these horrible deaths. Netanyahu could have gone along with Hamas's cease-fire terms. Netanyahu could have patriotically apologized and resigned. Liel Leibovitz, the editor-at-large of Tablet, thinks otherwise. Host Jonathan Silver speaks this week with Leibovitz about a recent essay analyzing the roots and effects of the protests themselves, "'Bring them Home' Is Bringing Us to the Brink.” In it, Leibovitz looks at the protesters' motivations, at a style of politics he thinks has been imported from America, and deeper questions raised by the Israelis marching against their government. In their conversation, Silver and Leibovitz try to peer a little more deeply into the ongoing drama of modern Zionism and the meaning of modern Israel.

It's sometimes argued that, as material and political and economic conditions improve in a society, that society tends to grow less religious. Polls have seemed to demonstrate for years the validity of this argument in America. Gallup, for instance, recently found that fewer than half of all Americans belong to a house of worship or religious congregation, down from about 70% at the turn of the century some 20 years ago. But perhaps such polls show do not show that Americans are becoming less religious at all. Perhaps they suggest instead that Americans are simply less devoted to traditional forms of biblical faith. That's the background for the argument advanced in the cover story of the May 2023 issue of Commentary, called "The Return of Paganism." Written by Liel Leibovitz, the editor at large of Tablet, the essay argues that the diminution of traditional forms of Christian worship has not made Americans less religious but has instead opened up space for inescapable religious impulses to find expression in beliefs that are awfully similar to ancient forms of paganism. To talk about these ideas, their manifestations in American culture and politics, and their implications, Leibovitz joins Mosaic editor Jonathan Silver. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.
In this episode of Dean's Chat, Dr. Jeffrey Jensen is joined by Dr. Jonathan Leibovitz, the Dean at Western University's College of Podiatric Medicine. Dr. Labovitz discusses leadership, the academic path to becoming a faculty member, and his role at the College of Podiatric Medicine since its inception in 2009. Tune in to learn more about Dr. Leibovitz's journey and insights into the world of podiatric medicine! Dr. Leibovitz talks about his start in Podiatric medicine and how he chose to channel his love for sports into his profession as a team physician. He highlights how many incoming students have visions of surgery or sports medicine when coming into school, but once they get into the profession, they understand all of the different other areas they can become an expert in, whether it's wound care, whether it's pediatric foot issues. In this episode, Dr. Leibovitz describes his experience during his AO International Trauma Surgery Fellowship in Austria and how that experience impacted his career. Dr. Jensen and Dr. Leibovitz discuss whether they think all students should go to a fellowship to get extra training in one focused area. Dr. Leibovitz emphasizes the significance of listening to students and valuing their suggestions and feedback. He reflects on his own experience as a student, where his opinions were often disregarded, and stresses the importance of changing this dynamic. Dr. Leibovitz acknowledges that the current generation of students expects to be heard and valued, and it is crucial to meet these expectations. https://aacpm.org/about/ https://www.westernu.edu/podiatricmedicine/ Dean's Chat Website Dean's Chat Episodes Dean's Chat Blog Why Podiatric Medicine? Scores of painters and photographers over the last seventy years have grappled with the formal portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II from life. These range from the celluloid fantasies of Cecil Beaton to the directness of Lucian Freud; the Renaissance-inspired divinity of Pietro Annigoni to the naturalism of Annie Leibovitz.Underlying all her official portrayals is an artistic conflict: the requirements of royal iconography and the demands of the usually conservative institutional commissioner, versus modern expectations for artistic self-expression and psychological authenticity. Leibovitz joins us to talk the new collection of her work.
A conversation with Dr. Amanda Leibovitz, PhD, LMHCA, LPC, CMPC a licensed therapist and certified mental performance consultant with a strong calling to empower others with the knowledge, awareness, and skills needed to navigate life on their own terms. Her unique blend of experience, education, and training allows her to integrate effective strategies for high performance with proven approaches to mental health counseling to emphasize clients' personal strengths and values as important vehicles for change. We talk about the recent and frequent descriptions of athletes and mental in the media and you'll hear Dr. Leibovitz's position on what she believes represents the full scope of helping athletes, above and beyond demands on time or questions of burnout. We talk about the competitive drive of the athlete to compete and succeed and ways to ensure this drive doesn't manifest itself in counter-productive anti-patterns in the life of the athlete. We talk about social media and social influence. We spend some time on this one because I wanted to get Dr. Leibovitz's professional opinion on a protocol for the athlete on dealing with the 800 pound gorilla of social influence, while driving their social media presence in a productive way.Lastly we talk about her strategy at Epic Wellness + Performance and how coaches can build out their athlete psychology resources for their athletes.About Epic Wellness + Performancehttps://epicwellnessco.com/About Dr. Amanda Leibovitz, PhD, LMHCA, LPC, CMPC https://epicwellnessco.com/about/Epic Twitterhttps://twitter.com/epicwellnesscoEpic Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/epicwellnesscoEpic Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/epicwellnessco/Follow Us:Facebook: https://Facebook.com/EventHorizon.TvTwitter: https://twitter.com/EventHorizonTvInstagram: https://instagram.com/eventhorizon.tvYouTube: https://youtube.com/c/EventHorizonTvSupport Us:https://Patreon.com/Endurancehttps://paypal.me/EnduranceExperience
I had a great conversation this week with Mr. Marc Silber. Marc is a life-long photographer, best-selling author three times over, filmmaker and host of the Advancing Your Photography YouTube series.Marc started out learning darkroom skills and the basics of photography at the legendary Peninsula School in Menlo Park, CA, in the '60s. If you are not familiar with the Peninsula School they are renowned for their no grade approach to education and support of student collaboration, positive risk taking, and creativity. Marc moved on to hone his skills to professional standards at the famed San Francisco Art Institute and has since moved into teaching photography in workshops all over the country. One of the things I admire most about Marc is his dedication to education. Not just sharing his knowledge and experience, but his own continuing education and you will see in his books, his videos and even in our conversation, he has a brilliant quote from an inspirational photographer for almost any situation. But his quotes are not just focused on iconic names like Adams and Leibovitz. He also makes it a point to learn from new photographers. When I booked Marc to be on the podcast, he shared a list of things that he has recently learned from talking to budding photographers and I thought that would make for a great conversation and provide some excellent teaching opportunities.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -LinksWebsite URL:https://www.silberstudios.com/https://marcsilber.smugmug.com/Instagram URL:https://www.instagram.com/marcsilber Facebook URL:https://www.facebook.com/marcosilberYouTube URL:https://www.youtube.com/marcsilberTo purchase Marc's book Advancing Your Photography: Secrets to Making Photographs that You and Others Will LoveVisit: https://www.advancingyourphotography.com/ - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -TOGCHAT ResourcesShow Website: https://togchat.comEpisode Web Page: https://www.joeedelman.com/marc-silberMy Website & Portfolio: https://www.JoeEdelman.comDon't forget to check out THE LAST FRAME LIVEWednesday evenings at 6:00PM ET US on YouTube!Visit: http://lastframe.live for past episodes.Calendar of upcoming Live-Online Presentations & Speaking Events:https://www.joeedelman.com/edu/I would love to be your PHOTOGRAPHY MENTOR! https://www.joeedelman.com/mentoring-for-photographers/- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -FTC Disclosure: No sponsors have paid for inclusion in this video. In this episode Rabbi Wildes interviews Liel Leibovitz. Liel Leibovitz is an Israeli-American journalist, author, media critic and video game scholar, and co-host of the wildly popular podcast Unorthodox. He worked at a hardware store and then at the Israeli Consulate as a senior press officer, producing "Israel Line," a daily summary of significant news taken directly from Israeli media. He received his B.A. from Tel Aviv University and after moving to New York City where his love of America continued to bloom, he received an M.S. in journalism and a Ph.D. in communications from Columbia University. Nan Hatzes died this week after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. I am taking the opportunity this week to repost a podcast I did with her back in May. I thought it was a remarkable interview. She recently published the book she describes in the interview, "The Brooke Books, Volume 1." It's an intimate memoir of Nan's drawings, paintings and writings in the mid-1970s, focusing in large part on the birth of her daughter, Brooke, in 1974. If you are interested in purchasing a copy, please check Nan's Facebook page. To put it simply, Nan made a lot of art. She also raised a daughter and worked at Shippensburg University, as well as presenting her paintings, drawings and photographs at numerous exhibitions. In 1980 photographer Annie Leibovitz awarded one of her photos first prize in Rolling Stone Magazine’s photography competition. Leibovitz described her photography as “intimate, seductive, and highly personal.” Did I mention that Nan has made a lot of art? She made so much gave a lot of it away to the community through her regular “Art Attacks.” Nan was also the creator of the very successful “Goddess Project,” a collection of commissioned portraits of local women. Nan was kind enough to share some of her pieces with us. I thank her for that and I thank Max Bramel for his assistance.

You probably have Jonathan Mannion's work in your home. Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, Aaliyah, Outkast, Nas, Eminem, Nicki Minaj, MGK – D.J. Khaled? Yep. That's his work on the CD cover — he's the Annie Leibovitz of Hip-Hop. We chat about growing up the son of creatives, his first shot, being his authentic self, and studying with legendary photographer Richard Avedon. Then, we hit the highlights, including shooting the cover of “Reasonable Doubt” in Conan O'Brien's (soon-to-be) crib and working on the Beats by Dre “Straight Outta _____” campaign. Scott Leibovitz is the president of Ari-El Enterprises a GENeration EXcellence-style business that acquires, develops and manages commercial real estate. In this episode Scott shares how the business was founded (and named) by his father, his earliest memories of the business and where the family envisions taking Ari-El in the future. I enjoyed talking with Scott about family, about business, and about family business. No surprise they are separate and intertwined at the same time.

Cal Leibovitz from OpticsPlanet is one of my favorite people. As a result our interviews can go down some strange rat holes. This one was no different. We certainly laughed a lot. I'm sure you will to.

Google tapped Annie Leibovitz to help launch the Pixel 4 smartphone with a series of diptychs and videos (shot on Pixel) of social activists around the U.S. According to TIME magazine, Google essentially gave Leibovitz carte blanche to select and shoot the subjects as she saw fit. But are the results compelling? In this episode of Vision Slightly Blurred, Sarah and Allen recount their visceral reaction to the project (e.g. "sellout"), whether tech brands should keep pushing the "Shot on Pixel/iPhone" narrative, and feeling nostalgia for Leibovitz's earlier work.

Welcome to episode 80 of Starships, Sabers, and Scoundrels: Vanity Fair on The Rise of Skywalker. On this episode, The Scoundrels are breaking down everything we learned from Lev Grossman's article and Annie Leibovitz's pictures in Vanity Fair about The Rise of Skwyalker. Plus, there is some news about upcoming Star Wars projects as well. Star Wars News Before the Vanity Fair discussion, the Scoundrels have two primary news stories to cover this week: After the release dates for the next three Star Wars movies were announced last week, Star Wars fans now know who is in charge of those films, and The Mandalorian and the Cassian Andor series aren't the only live action Star Wars shows coming to Disney+. Dennis, Jay, and Darth Taxus have several opinions on what Bob Iger's announcements about upcoming movies and live action television shows on Disney+ mean. Annie Leibovitz's The Rise of Skywalker photos in Vanity Fair The talk of the Star Wars world for the past week has been all about Annie Leibovitz's photographs and Lev Grossman's article about The Rise of Skywalker in Vanity Fair. Now, the Scoundrels dive in and discuss: The Knights of Ren, The involvement of Jordan in filming the movie, Keri Russell's character: Zorri Bliss, The introduction of Richard E. Grant's character, Billy Dee Williams returns to Star Wars, Kylo Ren and Rey's Force connection, Jannah and Finn riding on orbaks, How Carrie Fisher was integrated into The Rise of Skywalker, Luke Skywalker's role in The Rise of Skywalker, and So much more. Silence Fools All the coverage of Annie Leibovitz's photographs from Vanity Fair, leaves little time at the end of the episode. Normally, and episode of Starships, Sabers, and Scoundrels ends with listener feedback. However, Scoundrel Nation was a little quiet in the past week. Therefore, Dennis and Jay ask Taxus about his impressions of The Mandalorian panel from Star Wars Celebration Chicago. Darth Taxus delivers big time. The Scoundrels hope you enjoy episode 80: "Vanity Fair on The Rise of Skywalker" We hope you will consider subscribing to Starships, Sabers, and Scoundrels wherever you get your podcasts. Social Media, Email, and More Starships, Sabers, and Scoundrels is a bi-weekly show that features three first-generation Star Wars fans. Each episode, RetroZappers Dennis Keithly, Jay Krebs, and Darth Taxus offer their thoughts and reactions on Star Wars news. Then, they engage in Star Wars discussion in the "Hyperthetical" segment. Top ten lists, book reviews, Resistance and television discussion, and interviews are all on the table. After the Hyperthetical, each episode features listener feedback with Silence Fools! The Scoundrels on Twitter: Dennis Keithly can be followed @DJKver2, Darth Taxus is @DarthTaxus, and Jay Krebs is @JoyceKrebs. SCubedPod thrives on listener feedback. Therefore, Dennis, Taxus, and Jay would love to read your email on the show. To reach them, email the show at SCubedPod@RetroZap.com. For instance, have an opinion on Star Wars comics, Rebels, or the novels? We want to hear it. Also, have a question about some Star Wars detail? Send it to us! It doesn't have to be Star Wars to make it on our show. Starships, Sabers, and Scoundrels T-Shirts can be purchased here. Finally, Dennis, Taxus, and Jay would appreciate an iTunes review for the show. Thank you.

Big take away from this episode is how athletes may want to discover how to go seven layers deep, understanding what makes them feel the way they do about workouts, and learning to approach things with gratitude and what about gratitude is so important. Through his work as a writer, editor, and photographer, Terence Byrnes came to know and to photograph many Montreal-based writers throughout their careers. "For ten years, he photographed them in places where they felt at home, but not always at ease. 'Most contemporary literary portraits,' Byrnes says, 'are as highly burnished as Playboy nudes or as homespun as family snapshots. When I made these images, I was an interloper the writers had to react to.” Closer to Home: The Author and the Author Portrait (Vehicule Press, 2008) "fixes its gaze on writers as we seldom see them. These photographs, and the stories that accompany them, were captured where the writers live, work, or play. The result is a series of portraits that take us inside writers' lives and inside the process of making portraits—all served with a touch of refined literary gossip." Sounds like what we did when I met Terry at his home in Montreal to discuss the book. Among other things we talked about status, 'the thinker' gesture, authority and value, books and bricks, Susan Gillis, photographic crews from Toronto, the proliferation of imagery, the convergence of moving and still images, the diminishing role of the professional photographer, eyes, romanticizing crocks, impressions of presence, Roméo Dallaire, interest curiosity and light, postures, the Montreal Review of Books, Photoshop, negative ego, Annie Leibovitz, trust, Avedon in Texas and caring, achieving control over the world, noticing, Ishmael Reed, Robert Frank, contradiction and great art, sexual harassment at Concordia University, Stephen Fry, and selfies.
The champagne is flowing as Corrie, Ginny, and Jen discuss the prolific photographer behind some of the most significant portraits in American pop culture, Annie Leibovitz. From Rolling Stone magazine to touring with the Rolling Stones, from her relationship with John Lennon and Yoko Ono to her life with Susan Sontag, Leibovitz has captured numerous defining figures and moments of the past century. This week on Unorthodox, we’re still trying to find those Holocaust centers Sean Spicer was talking about. Our Jewish guest is filmmaker Ferne Pearlstein, whose latest documentary, The Last Laugh, asks comedians like Mel Brooks and Sarah Silverman whether or not we can joke about the Holocaust. She tells us why she decided to tackle such a taboo topic, how gallows humor can be a survival mechanism, and whether it matters if the joke-teller is Jewish or not. The Last Laugh premieres Monday, April 24 on Independent Lens on PBS. Our Gentile of the Week is Ashley McKinless, associate editor at America magazine, the Jesuit Review of Faith and Culture. She co-hosts the new podcast Jesuitical, which we lovingly call the Catholic version of Unorthodox. She explains who the Jesuits are, tells us about life as a 20-something practicing Catholic in New York City, and confirms that Liel is the only Leibovitz currently subscribed to America magazine. How do you write a Leonard Cohen song? That’s a difficult question, even for Leonard Cohen. The lyrics aren’t the problem; Cohen was a poet long before he wrote his first song. Nor has it been a question of finding the right melody. The challenge in writing a Leonard Cohen song came later, in the studio, when it was time to figure out how the whole thing should sound. So says Liel Leibovitz, anyway. Leibovitz is a senior writer at Tablet Magazine and the author of a new book on Cohen, A Broken Hallelujah: Rock and Roll, Redemption, and the Life of Leonard Cohen. It comes out this week, after four years of Leonard Cohen immersion, which led... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Some people say the way to measure the health of a society is by the status of its women. Others look to the GDP, or to voter turnout. For Tablet’s Liel Liebovitz, it’s a question of beats, rhymes, and samples. When he was 13, Leibovitz had something of a crisis of faith in his home, as well as his homeland, after his father landed in jail with a 20-year sentence. He could no longer stomach the saccharine tunes that made up the mainstream of 1980s Israeli music. That was when he discovered American hip-hop. It would take a few years before Israel got a hip-hop scene of its own, and its output, quality, and popularity have waxed and waned in the intervening decades. (We have an essay on some of the best new talent here.) Leibovitz, now living and raising a family in New York, finds that his feelings toward his homeland have followed a parallel course.
