We are so happy to be welcoming Victoria Waller, Ed.D. back to the podcast this episode. Dr. Waller is a seasoned reading specialist and educational therapist with more than four decades of experience helping children with learning differences, especially ones who teachers have sadly given up on. She is the author of Yes! Your Child Can, a finalist for the Foreword Reviews Best Book of the Year in 2022, and has received multiple accolades for her contributions to education. Holding advanced degrees in reading and learning differences, she has shared her expertise nationwide and internationally via speaking engagements and on over 45 podcasts. Dr. Waller joins us in this episode of Diverse Thinking Different Learning to discuss how unlocking a child's potential isn't about forcing them to fit a mold but is rather about tapping into what makes them come alive. She shares how she has spent decades helping children build on skills via their passions and interests. Whether it be a fascination with roller coasters, an obsession with Google, a deep love for history, or even love for Taylor Swift, it is Dr. Waller's belief that real learning happens when students engage with subjects that excite them. Dr. Waller shares remarkable stories of students who transformed their academic struggles into strengths simply by pursuing their interests in creative, hands-on ways. With everything from connecting a child with the Google VP to bringing another face-to-face with an amusement park executive, she proves that meaningful learning truly goes far past just textbooks and standardized testing. She explains why creativity isn't just about making art but is also about problem-solving, emotional regulation, and thinking critically in ways that traditional education often overlooks. She also offers advice for parents and educators on how to recognize a child's strengths, incorporate their interests into learning, advocate for early support, and teach with creativity. Dr. Victoria Waller's insights move to challenge conventional approaches to education, showing that every child (regardless of their learning profile) has the potential to thrive when given the right opportunities, so if you have ever wondered how to help a struggling student find their spark, this conversation is full of practical insights!   Show Notes: [2:14] - Dr. Victoria Waller reflects on having realized early in her career that children with learning differences have remarkable strengths. This week on the podcast, we welcome Shelley Woon to the conversation. Shelley is a dedicated educator and school leader with over three decades of experience supporting students, families, and staff in overcoming learning challenges. She holds a Master of Education in Leadership, has specialized qualifications in Special Education and Reading, and serves as Head of School at Arrowsmith School and Superintendent of Special Education. Shelley values the brain-learning connection and is committed to helping others unlock their potential. Shelley joins us to explore how we can move beyond compensatory strategies and actually strengthen cognitive function for students who have dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning challenges. We discuss why depending only on accommodations can actually limit students' career opportunities and how interventions that are rooted in neuroplasticity can actually rewire the brain. She explains the Arrowsmith approach, which involves targeting cognitive weaknesses via specific exercises designed to create real, measurable improvements in reading, writing, and executive function. We also take on common skepticism around cognitive training. With so many programs that promise miracles, how can parents and educators separate science-backed interventions from empty claims? Shelley shares research that supports neuroplasticity-based learning, and she gives us real-world success stories from students who have greatly improved their academic abilities through structured training. Show Notes: [2:52] - Shelley transitioned from focusing on accommodations to addressing cognitive challenges. [4:15] - Accommodations help, but actual progress comes from strengthening cognitive skills. [6:28] - Shelley discusses how ignoring learning disabilities can hinder careers and mental health, even with accommodations. [8:51] - We learn that Arrowsmith identifies cognitive deficits and uses neuroplasticity-based exercises to improve reading and writing. [10:04] - Shelley explains how neuroplasticity enables the brain to rewire itself. [13:52] - Addressing learning difficulties requires not just accommodations but also cognitive training. [15:01] - The Arrowsmith program develops cognitive functions by integrating supportive technology. [18:53] - Cognitive training can improve executive functioning, but programs like Arrowsmith are and should be evidence-based, [21:52] - It is reiterated that the Arrowsmith program improves learning capacity using neuroplasticity for academic and cognitive success. [23:02] - In Arrowsmith classrooms, Shelley discusses, students engage in individualized cognitive exercises customized to their needs. [25:52] - Shelley further explains that teachers guide students with personalized feedback. [27:33] - Education is evolving with neuroplasticity and integrating technology. [29:14] - Improving cognitive functions can improve multiple skills, sometimes yielding unexpected benefits in daily life. [31:33] - We learn how cognitive training such as sports practice requires mastering basic skills. [35:23] - Shelley shares how she can be contacted online. Today, we have a truly inspiring guest joining us from the heart of the jungle in Costa Rica. She's the director of the Renaissance Institute (iREN), a trailblazing educational program that is redefining how we approach learning for all students, especially those with learning differences. We're excited to dive deep into her insights and experiences on how she combines neuroscience, psychology, and pedagogy to create a transformative learning environment. Sylvia's journey began in 2020 when she established a small homeschool for teenagers to help them navigate distance learning during the pandemic. This initiative quickly grew into the Renaissance Institute, a unique educational environment in beautiful Costa Rica.  Throughout our conversation, Sylvia will share her motivations and the personal experiences that drove her to build this unique program. She created the kind of educational environment she wished she had as a child, which resonates deeply with many parents today. We'll explore how differentiation and a sense of safety are crucial in education, yet often missing. Sylvia believes in creating spaces where students feel safe to make mistakes and learn from them, an essential component in fostering resilience. By the end of this episode, you'll have a new perspective on how education can be transformed to meet the needs of every child. Sylvia's story is a powerful reminder that with the right mindset and approach, we can create learning environments that not only educate but also heal and empower our students.   Show Notes: [2:17] - It is a time of real opportunity for change in education right now. [3:18] - Sylvia describes the motivations she has had in building this unique learning environment in Costa Rica. [5:05] - In 2020, Sylvia established a small homeschool for teenagers in Costa Rica to help them navigate through distance learning. It grew into iREN. [8:01] - Students are highly involved in creating and establishing their own learning environment in a way that establishes trust. [10:12] - It is important for the attention to be given to the students who are doing the right thing. A lot of neurodivergent students are accustomed to being yelled at. [12:09] - Sylvia has created the program that she wished she had had as a child. Many parents feel the same way. [13:40] - Differentiation is important, but we can't differentiate so much that there is no normalcy. [15:11] - Another missing piece in education is love and a sense of safety. [17:57] - Create a space where students can make mistakes. [20:50] - Students want to learn impulse control but often feel like they can't. [23:47] - It is a reality that many parents are afraid of their child and fearful that they cannot support them. [26:33] - What brings a student happiness? Can we create a sense of acceptance and well-being where a child feels happy in their learning environment? [27:50] - Diagnoses are important, but many people focus on the negatives which creates a sense of hopelessness. [30:10] - Sylvia is confident that healing herself and changing her own mindset was the first step in creating iREN for students and families. [34:01] - Children are struggling, which is what it all boils down to. What can we do? [38:10] - Grades do not typically motivate a student. Parents care more about grades than students do. We need to help students find their intrinsic motivation.   About Our Guest: Sylvia serves as the founder and director of the Renaissance Institute in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Established in 2020, the Renaissance Institute (iREN) aims to engage children beyond screens by inviting them to explore a 33-acre forested campus. iREN integrates neuroscience, psychology, and pedagogy to unleash the potential of children facing challenges. The program prioritizes children's social-emotional requirements, cultivating resilience and hands-on learning tailored to each child's unique learning style. With small class sizes, the institute personalizes learning plans to cater to individual educational needs. Sylvia holds a Master's in Education from Dowling College in New York, specializing in neuroscience and teaching. Being a triple threat herself (dyslexic, ADHD, and defiant), she utilized her understanding of the brain to unlock her own potential, instigating a desire to assist others in achieving the same.   Connect with Sylvia: iREN's Website Email: irencontact@irencr.com  iREN Fundraiser   Links and Related Resources: Episode 28: Why We Need to Celebrate and Continue to Build Our Kids' Resilience Episode 112: Rethinking/Redefining Homeschooling with Mel Nichols   Connect with Us: Get on our Email List Book a Consultation Get Support and Connect with a ChildNEXUS Provider Register for Our Self-Paced Mini Courses for Parents Who Want to Better Understand Their Child's Dyslexia, ADHD or Anxiety.    The Diverse Thinking Different Learning podcast is intended for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical or legal advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Over the last few years, we've seen a noticeable increase in anxiety and anxiety disorders in children and adolescents. And we've talked about anxiety many times on the Diverse Thinking Different Learning Podcast. But one thing we haven't discussed yet is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder or OCD. This is a topic that has been requested by listeners and I'm thrilled to have found today's guest, Dr. Jesse Spiegel, an expert on OCD. Everyone has had the occasional concern about misplacing something or has had a fear of germs or contamination. Sometimes we have a need to order and arrange things in a particular way. But when these thoughts and behaviors become intense and begin to interfere with life, they may indicate OCD. In our conversation today, Dr. Spiegel explains the major differences between obsessive behaviors and compulsions as well as common unintentional mistakes parents make with children who exhibit these behaviors.   Show Notes: [2:28] - We are currently seeing a noticeable increase in anxiety in children and teens. [4:05] - OCD has two components: obsessions and compulsions. [5:48] - There are some compulsions that are observable to other people, but many compulsions are mental and unseen by others. [8:04] - Reassurance seeking is often overlooked by parents, but it is common in OCD and tends to feed the obsessions and compulsions. [10:03] - When you accommodate the child's compulsive behaviors, it actually accommodates the OCD. [11:49] - Anxiety disorders overlap in a lot of ways, but OCD is overpowering. [15:00] - Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) is a component of the treatment for OCD. Dr. Spiegel explains what this entails. [19:12] - Being over accommodating or over demanding are mistakes that a lot of parents of children with OCD make. [20:16] - Parents need to learn new ways to respond because a lot of behaviors unintentionally fuel OCD. [22:27] - Let's give a name to OCD for children. Some call it “The Worry Monster”. [24:57] - Giving it a name takes the power away from OCD. It's not who you are, but it is impacting you. [26:30] - A lot of times, kids do not want to be in therapy. Dr. Spiegel describes some ways to provide motivation.   About Our Guest: Dr. Jesse Spiegel is a licensed clinical psychologist treating children, adolescents, and adults. He works in private practice in Los Angeles, CA, where he specializes in treating OCD, anxiety, insomnia, and behavioral-related problems. In addition to utilizing CBT and exposure-based therapies, Dr. Spiegel takes a family-based approach when working with clients. Dr. Spiegel is a clinical instructor at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences.  He is the Vice Chair of the Anxiety Depression Association of America's (ADAA) OCD SIG.   Dr. Spiegel is a graduate of the IOCDF's Behavioral Therapy Training Institute (BTTI), as well as the Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) program.   Connect with Dr. Jesse Spiegel: Dr. Jesse Spiegel's Website Email: drjessespiegel@gmail.com    Links and Related Resources: Anxiety and the Family Anxiety and Depression in Adolescents Episode 67: Your Child's Anxiety - When to Worry with Dr. Piacentini   Connect with Us: Get on our Email List Book a Consultation Get Support and Connect with a ChildNEXUS Provider Check out some amazing schools for incredible students   The Diverse Thinking Different Learning podcast is intended for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical or legal advice, diagnosis, or treatment. When you are recruiting talent, are you searching for candidates who fit objective criteria? This is one common mistake across sales organizations when growing their sales teams. Although you do want to make sure you have a qualified candidate, you also want to make sure you are recruiting sales people who are looking for the same culture and environment that you are investing in as a company.  In this week's episode, I share with you the best practices when recruiting talent to find candidates who will be long term invested in the culture of your company, not just on sales.  Quotes:  “If we're just selling salary, then don't be surprised when somebody decides to move because someone else pays them a little more salary. But if they're aligned with our culture, they're likely to want to stick around, because it's going to feed them in ways that go beyond just their salary” “So remember when we're recruiting, we're in essence selling our culture and if we don't sell our culture, then all we're selling is salary.” Looking for more guidance and support on handling all your B2B sales struggles? His own struggle with drugs. Meg's family issues related to drug use. Treatment and access for addicts. The destructiveness of shame-based systems and punishment. The terrible impact of the carceral system on families, especially families of color. The disparity in response between the (mostly black) crack-cocaine epidemic and (mostly white) opioid epidemic. The transition to legal marijuana, and the unequal impact of this policy change by race. What does a healthy relationship with drugs and alcohol look like? (01:28:09) Christophe, Joe and Sean discuss the topics from Meg's interview. Drug use from the perspective of what it means to be human. The presupposition that drug use is wrong. We're still stuck with early-20th-century moralizing. Debunking Alcoholics Anonymous, and other 12-step programs. Most people who use drugs don't get into trouble. Zero-tolerance, one-size-fits-all, abstinence-only models like AA have worse outcomes. While AA doesn't fit the strict definition of a "cult," there are cultic aspects of AA. The difficulty of maintaining friendships with people in the "program." Drug use as a symptom, often used to mask the need for therapy about deeper issues. Fentanyl changes the risk equation, making death much more likely. This leads us to an imperative of legalization / access to safe dosages.   Welcome! and Thank you for listening.   What are you eating for?  A common reaction is stress eating.  Was your goal accomplished.  Most of the time that is temporary.  A short, feel good moment.  Goal achieved.  But then the guilt sets in.  Why, the goal was achieved?  The guilt is because we all know the real reason to eat is for energy and nutrition.  Did the junk food provide energy?  Often, yes.  The problem is that there was more energy and less nutrition than what was needed.  The excess energy and waste lead to ill health overtime. Sometimes we have the goal of building muscle or recovering from work.  What is the best fuel?  What is the best fuel for regular metabolic function?  There are as many answers as you would like to spend time researching.  How about we keep it simple.  Common goals: health, performance, longevity.    Let's see how well I sorted this out for you today.  Thanks for listening.   Website: Email me at jami@doctordulaney.com   https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2015/04/finlands-radical-heart-health-transformation/389766/

Losing someone you love can be one of the most painful experiences you'll ever have to endure. While there's no one way to avoid intense feelings of grief, there are healthier ways to come to terms with your loss.  In this episode, Gail had a very engaging conversation with Alison Pena aka “The Bad Widow”,  who had to deal with the loss of her husband of 25 years. Alison's husband was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer but it did not stop him from still playing tennis even as his balance was waning or completing his last painting days before his death. It was that kind of spirit that made them LIVE to the fullest all the days they have left together.  Highlights of the episode … - Why does Alison call herself the Bad Widow? - What were the things that Alison was doing before her husband got sick? (...Was she able to do those things even when her husband got sick?) - When emotions come up at an inconvenient time, what should you do? - What are the types of grieving shifts in the grieving process? - Why is grieving difficult when you don't have someone else to have a sense of touch with? - What was the form of self-care Alison did to get through her grief? - In the coaching that Alison did, what was the difference between before and after her husband passed away?  - Gail shared her grieving experience over an adult son with a drug addiction that has lasted for several years. - What is the real essence of being called "The Bad Widow? (...How do you come back to yourself after grieving?) - How did Alison reinvent herself with the dating site Bumble and found true love again?  - What was different about Wayne (her new love) that Alison was able to get past the feelings of betrayal and guilt from the death of her husband? - Did Alison have to rebuild her network differently after her husband's death? - Some insightful parting words from Alison Pena. Why do we still tolerate male circumcision? Right wing attacks on the body, generally. Karl Marx as an enlightenment thinker. The increase in the subtlety of bodily oppression. But now, property rights under neoliberalism are pushing us back toward feudalism--the marriage of corporate and state power. Rejection of modernity as a misdirected reaction against the excesses of capitalism. The contradictions of Ayn Rand. (54:32) The US was founded in resistance against tyranny, but the modern right has now changed their definition of tyranny to include any broad-based protections against oppression. The standardization of the white male body type, to the exclusion of the unique bodily concerns of women and POC, everything from temperature norms, to the minimization of the pain of menstruation. Challenging oppressive truths, without falling into relativism. The reactionary co-opting of the narratives of liberation, and the use of state power. A return to science, the downranking of personal opinion. Edward Bernays 1928 seminal work on "Propaganda." (01:33:56) Post-truth regimes break down the connection to rationality, but enthusiastically use all the modern apparatus of state power to enforce their manufactured "truths." Parallels between Soviet methods of oppression / indoctrination using citizens to inform on each other, and the modern GOP with their bounty laws and kids ratting out teachers. Policy differences pale into insignificance, compared to protecting democracy itself. (01:45:57) A postliberal mission statement. Labor unions.
