A challenging project has Kiddo and his friends frustrated. They need to construct something that can protect an egg for their school's Egg Drop event, but each friend has tried their own ideas without success. Mimi reads the book Five Brave Knights vs. the Dreadful Dragon, a story about kids facing similar, though fire-breathing, frustration. What can we do when our individual efforts aren't enough? In Hebrew, the word for “together” (yachad) shares the same root as the word for “individual” (yachid), illustrating how every group is made up of individuals. Your uniqueness is a superpower, but it can be combined with others' to achieve big shared goals. Rising, the new children's book by award-winning Canadian author Sidura Ludwig, tells the story of a Jewish child and their mother preparing homemade challah bread for Shabbat. Ludwig wrote the book four years ago, during the pandemic lockdown, when she found solace in the weekly ritual of challah-making during those uncertain times. Now, releasing in a post-Oct. 7 world, Ludwig realizes the activity can serve a similar purpose: baking challah by hand has become a touchstone of hope for many people dealing with grief, despair and anxiety about worldwide antisemitism. An estimated 30,000 copies of Ludwig's 40-page book, illustrated by Sophia Vincent Guy, are making their way this month into the homes of many young Jewish families, courtesy of the free PJ Library program. Welcome to Radio Chitaika, a story podcast from PJ Library. My name is Eugenia and I am very excited to read to you! Today's story is adapted by Alli Thresher.   How do you know something is really yours?   According to the Torah (the first five books of the Bible), if we find a lost ox or sheep, we must bring it back to its owner — and if we don't know who the owner is, we have to keep the animal until it's claimed. The same goes for other objects, including really awesome toys or money: “So shall you do with any lost article . . . you shall not ignore it” (Deuteronomy 22:3). It's not enough simply to hold on to the object; you must keep it safe.   Returning lost objects — in Hebrew, hashavat aveidah (or in traditional Eastern and Central European pronunciation, hashavat aveida) — is an important mitzvah, or commandment, for Jewish people. Today's story, about a pair of lost chickens, is inspired by Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa, a first-century sage who famously carried out this mitzvah.

The Missing Ingredient Welcome to Radio Chitaika,- a podcast with stories from PJ Library My name is Yevgeniya and I am very excited to tell you the story we have prepared for you today. In this story we will meet Isaac. Isaac has everything - a luxurious estate, a personal chef, a luxury car... But Isaac cannot understand: how it is that his friend Ruthie, who lives in a small hut with a lonely room, cooks incredible food, the tastier than which he has never had taste. So, Isaac goes in search of the mysterious ingredient and ends up finding much more. In ancient times, rabbis, the Jewish sages, gathered and discussed various laws and commandments from the Bible. Their conversations were recorded in a book we call the Talmud, which means "teachings" in Hebrew. The story you will hear now is based on a story from the Talmud - about how a rich emperor was surprised by the delicious smells coming from poor houses. After questioning the resident of one of these houses, a modest local rabbi, the emperor learns that the food prepared for Shabbat has some "special seasonings."

Today's story, The Tzedakah Walk, is adapted from the PJ Library podcast, Afternoons With Mimi. This story was written by Alli Thresher and narrated by Masha Pruss. What makes the world better? Jewish sages say it is our job to make sure the world's resources are distributed evenly amongst all of the people on Earth who need them, ensuring that everyone can lead happy and healthy lives. This is where the mitzvah, or commandment, of tzedakah comes in. For children, tzedakah might be explained as an expanded version of sharing. One afternoon, Alex is staying with his grandmother after school. He wants to make a present for his baby brother. Mimi, his grandma, rinses out a milk carton. Alex wonders what to create with the little box, when his grandmother reminds him of a special present his cousins gifted him as a baby: a tzedakah box.

The Lost Chickens - Потерянные цыплята   Welcome to *Radio Chitaika* a storytelling podcast from PJ Library. Today's story, The Lost Chickens, was adapted by Alli Thresher, translated by Lana Severinsky, and read by Gera Sandler.   Returning lost objects — in Hebrew, hashavat aveidah (or in traditional Eastern and Central European pronunciation, hashavas aveida) — is an important mitzvah, or commandment, for Jewish people. Today's story, about a pair of lost chickens, is inspired by Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa, a first-century sage who famously carried out this mitzvah.

On this episode of the "Helping Families be Happy Podcast," host, Christopher Robbins husband and father of nine, residing in the Central Valley of California talks to Adina Oberman. She is a former preschool teacher and over 15 years, she has helped families through the ups and downs of early childhood. Adina is the creator of “Big Books for Little Hands”, a valuable resource for parents and educators seeking the best books to navigate the challenges of life with kids to the best books for navigating the challenges of life with kids.   Episode Highlights 01.40: Adina mentions the importance of food in Jewish holidays, emphasizing that eating together is a significant part of the celebration. 03.40: Sukkot is a holiday during which people build temporary huts outside their homes. This holiday is a celebration, often associated with the harvest season, where communal meals are held in these temporary huts.  04:15: Simchat holiday is a celebration of reading the Torah, the Old Testament, from beginning to end over the course of a year. Simchat Torah is a joyful holiday filled with festivities, including lots of eating and family fun.  05.52: Christopher notes that Yom Kippur is a solemn holiday and it's a specific time when people can reflect on any offenses they may have committed against their family, friends, God, and the world around them. 07.15: Adina emphasizes that seeking forgiveness tradition is beautiful because it helps prevent small transgressions from accumulating within family relationships. It allows people to come full circle, make amends, and start fresh, fostering reconciliation and positive relationships. 09:25: Christopher asks Adina to describe the foods and recipes that are typically included in celebratory Jewish meals.  10.21: In Jewish celebrations food varies from house to house and my family but during Rosh Hashanah, there are several symbolic foods like apples dipped in honey, braided bread, and Matzo ball soup and brisket. 11.52: Adina suggests that food is an excellent way to engage children in cultural traditions. Parents can involve their kids by either preparing food together or sitting down to eat and explaining the significance of the dishes being served to help children feel connected to their heritage and understand the reasons behind the holiday customs. 12.16: Adina recommends reading books about Jewish holidays to children. These books can be a valuable resource in making abstract concepts more understandable and relatable to young minds. 16.06: Adina suggests seeking out a local Jewish Community Centre, which can be found in many states across the United States. JCCs typically offer a wide range of programming for all ages and levels of observance which allows families to participate in meaningful ways within the Jewish community and helps build a strong Jewish identity for their children. 3 Key Points There are several Jewish holidays during this season, starting with Rosh Hashanah, which is the Jewish New Year, says Adina. She explains that Rosh Hashanah is a time for celebration, renewal, reflection, and a focus on making the upcoming year better. Adina explains that Rosh Hashanah is a joyful holiday and is a time of renewal and rebirth, similar to the way January 1st is celebrated as the New Year in the secular calendar. During Rosh Hashanah, people often engage in the custom of dipping apples into honey, symbolizing the desire for a sweet and prosperous year ahead. PJ Library serves as a practical and accessible way for parents and caregivers to introduce their children to Jewish traditions and strengthen their connection to their cultural heritage, says Adina. Tweetable Quotes “Simchat holiday follows Sukkot in the Jewish calendar and is marked by lively and spirited celebrations within the Jewish community.” - Adina Oberman “You can say "Happy New Year" to anyone celebrating Rosh Hashanah but in general for any Jewish holiday, you can use the phrase "Chag Sameach," which means "Happy Holiday." This is a versatile greeting suitable for various Jewish celebrations.” - Adina Oberman   Resources Mentioned Helping Families Be Happy Podcast Apple https://www.bigbooksforlittlehands.com/ Podcast Editing
