The First Part in our Faith in the Wicked Trilogy 28 Days Later has aged like a fine wine but perhaps 28 Years Later hasn't aged enough as audiences unfortunately seemed to tune out the latest entry in this franchise 28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLE. We discuss the franchise as a whole (mostly skipping 28 WEEKS LATER unless one host gets a chance to bring up THE BEACH) and how much love we have for Ralph Fiennes, well-endowed zombies and a dance sequence with Satanists. Just a damn good time at the movies as we start our year of covering one new theatrical release a month. Enjoy! The review of the post-apocalyptic horror film directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Alex Garland. Its predecessor 28 Years Later (2025), and serves as the fourth installment overall in the 28 Days Later film series. The film stars Ralph Fiennes, Jack O'Connell, Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman, and Chi Lewis-Parry.Hosted on Ausha. See ausha.co/privacy-policy for more information.
We're taking a trip to The Bone Temple this week on Breakfast All Day, but don't worry. Ralph Fiennes has great taste in music, it'll be super fun. Here's what we've reviewed lately: 28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLE. This picks up right where Danny Boyle's "28 Years Later" left off in 2025, but Nia DaCosta's film is very different: thrilling and terrifying in its own way, but also more somber, but also funny ...? Fiennes is insane here. In theaters. THE RIP. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck lead an all-star cast as Miami cops whose team stumbles upon a massive stash of drug money in this twisty thriller. This is the kind of substantial, mid-budget action movie we used to see a lot of in the '80s and '90s. Streaming now on Netflix. THE SECRET AGENT. We knew we wanted to catch up with Brazil's entry in the Oscar international feature category, and this was the perfect time. It just won Golden Globes for best motion picture - non-English language and best actor for Wagner Moura. We admire it but don't love it as much as our fellow critics do. In theaters. Movie News LIVE! Always a good time on Fridays. Among this week's topics were Kathleen Kennedy leaving LucasFilm; "Dune: Part Three" and "Avengers: Doomsday" competing on Dec. 18, aka "Dunesday"; and Matthew McConaughey trademarking his famous phrase, "Alright, alright, alright." For this week's main podcast review, Katie Johnson, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, and Giovanni Lago join me to discuss the latest in the "28 Days" franchise, "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," starring Ralph Fiennes, Jack O'Connell, Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman & Chi Lewis-Parry. Directed this time by Nia DaCosta with another screenplay in the franchise by Alex Garland (And Danny Boyle serving as a Producer), this is a direct sequel to last year's "28 Years Later,"continuing the stories of Spike and Dr. Ian Kelson in a post-apocalyptic world infected by the rage virus. There is a lot of gore and humanity to be found in this one, with plenty of shocks and surprises. But what did we think of it? Please tune in as we discuss the performances, writing, themes, direction, makeup effects, the needle drops, its awards season potential, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. In this episode of The Moviegoers Society, Sean Tajipour, the Mayor of Nerdtropolis, and Drew Munhausen break down 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple — Nia DaCosta's brutal, heavy metal-charged next chapter that expands the franchise's lore with real heart. They dig into why the sequel feels leaner, meaner, and more focused than last year's 28 Years Later, while still delivering gnarly setpieces, relentless tension, and big swings that actually land.Sean and Drew also dive into Ralph Fiennes' knockout turn as Dr. Ian Kelson, the eerie calm he brings to a world made of bones, and the unsettling bond he forms with the Alpha-infected “Samson” — plus how the story somehow makes you care in the middle of pure nightmare fuel. They talk Spike's continued journey, the rise of “the Jimmys,” and why Jack O'Connell's Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal is an absolutely magnetic, unhinged antagonist. And when the storylines collide, they break down why a few sequences already feel like the kind of “we'll still be talking about this at the end of 2026” movie moments.Special guest Jahan Navissi joins us for our first episode of 2026.
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple picks up where 28 Years Later left off – in a world of zombie-like infecteds and vigilantes that turn out to be a murderous cult. Ralph Fiennes returns as Dr. Kelson, who makes an unlikely friend in his medical refuge slash memorial site slash bone temple.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
The first in-studio Empire Podcast of the year, following hot on the heels of our triumphant live episode at Kings Place, sees Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, James Dyer, and John Nugent get together to discuss their New Year's resolutions and define what 'cinema' means for them in 2026; review 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, The Rip, and Rental Family, and discuss the week's movie news. Guest-wise, Chris has lovely chats with two twosomes — Ralph Fiennes and Chi Lewis-Parry (yes, back for more after the live show, even if this was recorded months before the live show) from 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, and Rental Family's star/director duo, Brendan Fraser and Hikari. Oh, and James tells a joke. Enjoy!
"28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" is a 2026 post-apocalyptic horror film directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Alex Garland. It was shot back-to-back with its predecessor, "28 Years Later," and is the fourth installment in the "28 Days Later" film series. The film stars Ralph Fiennes, Jack O'Connell, Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman, and Chi Lewis-Parry. Much like "28 Years Later," the film has received acclaim from critics, with praise for Fiennes' and O'Connell's performances, Garland's writing, and DaCosta's direction, with some believing it to be superior to its predecessor. DaCosta and O'Connell were both kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about their work and experiences making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from Sony Pictures. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Before heading off to Sundance next week, Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy bring you ten new movie reviews. Erik looks at the anime adaptation of the text that inspired Edge of Tomorrow (All You Need Is Kill) and a Palestinian epic of family and loss that people need to see (All That's Left of You) while Steve checks out the latest film about family from the Dardenne Brothers (Young Mothers). On the documentary side there is the tale of a wrestler who was born with Crouzon's Syndrome (Standout: The Ben Kjar Story) and a two-parter on HBO Max about one of the absolute legends of comedy (Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man!). Jodie Foster takes the lead again as a psychiatrist investigating her patient's death (A Private Life) and Amanda Seyfried leads with music as part of a shaky religious sect (The Testament of Ann Lee). Bad cops are at the center of the new film from the director of Lowlife (Night Patrol) and Matt Damon & Ben Affleck may also be at the center of Joe Carnahan's latest thriller (The Rip). Finally, Ralph Fiennes and Jack O'Connell approach the rage virus in vastly different ways in the continuation of the apocalyptic series (28 Years Later: The Bone Temple).1:44 - All You Need Is Kill8:36 - Young Mothers14:02 - All That's Left Of You21:01 - Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man!36:40 - Standout: The Ben Kjar Story43:40 - A Private Life51:35 - Night Patrol1:03:01 - The Testament of Ann Lee1:12:34 - The Rip1:25:02 - 28 Years Later: The Bone TempleCLICK ON THE FILMS TO RENT OR PURCHASE AND HELP OUT THE MOVIE MADNESS PODCASTSIGN UP FOR AUDIBLEBe sure to check outErik's Weekly Box Office Column – At Rotten TomatoesCritics' Classics Series – At Elk Grove Cinema in Elk Grove Village, ILChicago Screening Schedule - All the films coming to theaters and streamingPhysical Media Schedule - Click & Buy upcoming titles for your library.(Direct purchases help the Movie Madness podcast with a few pennies.)Erik's Linktree - Where you can follow Erik and his work anywhere and everywhere. The Movie Madness Podcast has been recognized by Million Podcasts as one of the Top 100 Best Movie Review Podcasts as well as in the Top 60 Film Festival Podcasts and Top 100 Cinephile Podcasts. The movie year of 2026 begins in earnest this week on the podcast with Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy looking at ten films, some of which are expansions of 2025 releases. There's a Harry/Sally-like rom-com (People We Meet on Vacation). Steve checks out a documentary of a famed writer and Holocaust survivor (Elie Wiesel: Soul on Fire), plus a pair of true stories with Lucy Liu caring for her schizophrenic son (Rosemead) and the tale of an emergency call from a six-year-old trapped in a car in Gaza (The Voice of Hind Rajab). The true stories continue with Kristen Stewart's harrowing directorial debut of a woman plagued with memories of sexual abuse (The Chronology of Water), Gus Van Sant's latest about a 1977 hostage situation (Dead Man's Wire) and Ralph Fiennes tries to get people to sing during WWI (The Choral). Two varying apocalypses occur with Daisy Ridley discovering that the victims of a catastrophic explosion are only mostly dead while Gerard Butler and his family have to leave their bunker (Greenland 2: Migration). With all that horror this week, the show wraps up with some chimpanzee terror (Primate).2:29 - Elie Wiesel: Soul On Fire8:46 - People We Meet on Vacation22:39 - Rosemead28:52 - The Chronology of Water41:02 - The Voice of Hind Rajab47:52 - Dead Man's Wire59:59 - The Choral1:09:46 - We Bury the Dead1:18:39 - Greenland 2: Migration1:25:41 - PrimateCLICK ON THE FILMS TO RENT OR PURCHASE AND HELP OUT THE MOVIE MADNESS PODCASTSIGN UP FOR AUDIBLEBe sure to check outErik's Weekly Box Office Column – At Rotten TomatoesCritics' Classics Series – At Elk Grove Cinema in Elk Grove Village, ILChicago Screening Schedule - All the films coming to theaters and streamingPhysical Media Schedule - Click & Buy upcoming titles for your library.(Direct purchases help the Movie Madness podcast with a few pennies.)Erik's Linktree - Where you can follow Erik and his work anywhere and everywhere. The Movie Madness Podcast has been recognized by Million Podcasts as one of the Top 100 Best Movie Review Podcasts as well as in the Top 60 Film Festival Podcasts and Top 100 Cinephile Podcasts. "The Choral" is a British historical drama film co-produced and directed by Nicholas Hytner and written by Alan Bennett. Set in 1916, during World War I, in the fictional town of Ramsden, Yorkshire, the film follows the members of the local choral society, which recruits a group of teenage boys and girls for a performance of Edward Elgar's "The Dream of Gerontius," a work chosen because a German did not write it. It stars Ralph Fiennes, Roger Allam, Mark Addy, Alun Armstrong, Robert Emms, and Simon Russell Beale. The film had its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received positive reviews for its feel-good story and performances. Hytner and Fiennes were both kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about their work and experiences making the film, which you can listen to below.
We close out our holiday run It's Christmas and the Boys Are Sad with Martin McDonagh's In Bruges, a film that balances brutal violence, pitch-black comedy, and unexpected tenderness against a fairy-tale Christmas backdrop. Phil & Emily joined by writers and podcasters Clay Keller and Alan Sepinwall to unpack why this movie has only grown more beloved and more emotionally complicated over time. The conversation dives into Colin Farrell's career-defining performance, Brendan Gleeson's quiet moral gravity, and Ralph Fiennes' volcanic late-movie entrance. They explore McDonagh's dialogue rhythms, the film's strange tonal alchemy, and how Bruges itself becomes a purgatorial space beautiful, frozen in time, and quietly judgmental. Christmas lights, medieval towers, and European pageantry all heighten the sense that these characters are stuck between punishment and absolution. They also discuss the movie's reputation shift from cult hit to modern classic, its placement within McDonagh's broader body of work, and why In Bruges may be the most emotionally honest entry in the “sad men at Christmas” cinematic canon. Along the way, the group touches on Carter Burwell's melancholic score, the film's theatrical release context, and the way humor is used as both shield and confession.Whether you first saw In Bruges in theaters or came to it years later through word of mouth, this episode examines why the film still hits so hard and why it remains one of the defining dark comedies of the 2000s. Matthew Vaughn (Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class) rewinds the clock to the origins of the secret spy organization. Set during the chaos of World War I, the film explores how global conflict, shadowy conspiracies, and larger-than-life villains gave birth to the Kingsman legacy. The story centers on Ralph Fiennes (Schindler's List, The Grand Budapest Hotel) as Orlando, Duke of Oxford, a pacifist aristocrat drawn into a worldwide plot manipulating nations into war. Alongside him is Djimon Hounsou (Gladiator, Blood Diamond) as the fiercely loyal Shola, and Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace, Prince of Persia) as Polly, whose intelligence and resolve prove just as vital as brute force. The next generation steps forward through Harris Dickinson (Triangle of Sadness, Beach Rats) as Conrad Oxford, whose journey from idealism to brutal reality forms the emotional backbone of the film. Aaron & Coy explore the film's most impactful and emotionally devastating moments: the liquidation of the Kraków ghetto, the girl in the red coat, Stern and Schindler's evolving partnership, the horrors of Plaszów labor camp, the creation of the list that would save over a thousand lives, and the heart-wrenching final scenes that have brought audiences to tears for decades. In this episode, we break down The Menu (2022) — a darkly funny, deeply disturbing satire that skewers elitism, art, and obsession. We discuss Ralph Fiennes' chilling performance as Chef Slowik, Anya Taylor-Joy's grounded perspective as Margot, and how the movie blends horror and comedy to make a brutal statement about the culture of perfection and privilege. We analyze the symbolism behind each course, the tension that builds throughout the film, and how The Menu uses its setting to explore control, creativity, and the cost of art. Whether you laughed, squirmed, or left hungry for more, this is one of the most brilliantly twisted movies of the decade — and we're breaking down exactly why it works so well. Twenty-eight years after the Rage virus first tore through the UK, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland return to the franchise that redefined zombie horror. 28 Years Later picks up on a remote island where survivors have carved out a fragile existence, only to be drawn back into the mainland's quarantine zone—where secrets fester and the infected aren't the only threat. With a cast led by Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes, the film dives deep into the psychological toll of survival, the ethics of containment, and the terrifying evolution of humanity itself.Join the crew as we dissect the film's themes of isolation and resurgence, compare it to its predecessors (28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later), and debate whether this third installment delivers on its legacy—or simply mutates it. We also explore the film's visual grit, Young Fathers' haunting score, and the implications of a new trilogy in the making. So grab your hazmat suit and tune in—because the Rage virus isn't done with us yet.
Send us a textThe fourth trip to Hogwarts should feel bigger, bolder, and a little bit dangerous... and that's exactly where our conversation goes. We crack open Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire to ask why the book's expansive scope soars while the movie's world-building sometimes skims. Think missing Quidditch World Cup spectacle, a blink-and-you'll-miss-it introduction to Beauxbatons and Durmstrang, and a Yule Ball that reveals more about teenage insecurity than the film gives it time to process. When the story grows up, not every scene survives the squeeze. We dig into character choices that define the adaptation. Brendan Gleeson's Mad‑Eye Moody is a masterclass in look and presence, but the Barty Crouch Jr. twist sharpens every “helpful” gesture into manipulation on rewatch. Dumbledore's famously calm question turns confrontational on screen, shifting the headmaster's essence in ways later films quietly undo. Ron's jealousy lands as one note, while Neville finally gets time to shine, especially when the Cruciatus demonstration brushes against the truth of his parents. The Pensieve earns its place as a narrative hinge, even if the movie drops key threads like Rita Skeeter's Animagus reveal. And then there's the graveyard. Ralph Fiennes's Voldemort is operatic and chilling, a rebirth that reframes everything that came before. “Kill the spare” isn't just a shock; it's the moment the series announces that choices have a cost. We weigh the thrills of the expanded dragon chase against lost texture, debate the fairness of the lake task, and consider how a longer-form remake could restore the connective tissue that made the book sing.If you love sharp, story-first film talk equal parts heart and critique, then hit play. Then tell us: did Goblet of Fire nail the coming‑of‑age turn, or does the magic feel thinner on screen? At first glance, the sequel to the zombie movie 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later is not an obvious pick for a podcast about Arthurian movies. However, after watching a few minutes, it's fairly evident that the movie isn't just a commentary on post-Brexit Britain, the weaponization of nostalgia, and the dangers of Little Englanders, it's playing with all of British history, from the end of its place as part of the Roman Empire--an end that leads to the creation of the Arthurian legend--to the Viking incursions, to the Henry V, the rise and fall of the British Empire, World War II, and the decrepit ruling class that protected monsters like Jimmy Savile and Prince Andrew. Beyond that, it's a meditation on death and compassion, one which asks us to, as the Latin phrase goes, memento mori. Starring Alfie Williams, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Edvin Rydig, Jack O'Connell, and Chi Lewis-Parry. Written by Alex Garland. Directed by Danny Boyle.
