Forty six years ago, California held its first statewide vote on gay rights. Prop 6, also known as the Briggs Initiative, sought to ban gay teachers from the classroom. The battle to stop that proposition is the subject of Slate's current “Slow Burn” podcast season, chronicling an explosive moment in both Bay Area and gay liberation history. It follows the political trajectory of Harvey Milk, as well as a wave of anti-gay backlash from conservative politicians across the country. We speak with Slow Burn host Christina Cauterucci and early gay rights advocates Cleve Jones, Gwenn Craig and Ruth Mahaney, about lasting lessons from the Briggs Initiative and those who opposed it. Guests: Christina Cauterucci, host of Slate's "Slow Burn: Gays Against Briggs" podcast Cleve Jones, author, "When We Rise," organizer with UNITE HERE, a hospitality workers' union. Also co-founder of the AIDS Foundation and founder of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt Ruth Mahaney, former professor of gender and LGBTQ studies Gwenn Craig, queer elder who has worked on several electoral candidate and issues campaigns in San Francisco, including the supervisorial campaign of Harvey Milk and San Franciscans Against Proposition 6

Today, I have two special guests joining me in studio, Kevin McHale is back for his second time on the show and I'm so excited to welcome Austin P. McKenzie for the first time. Separately they are amazing performers on stage screen and in music, but together they are a powerhouse couple, encouraging each other in their art and creating beautiful memories together outside of work as well. Of course unless you've been living under a rock you know that Kevin played Artie Abrams on one of my favorite shows, Glee along with his own music dancing, acting and much more. Austin wowed audiences on both coasts with his performance as Melchior in Deaf West Theatre's “Spring Awakening” as well as being front and center again as the younger Cleve Jones in “When We Rise” and has made some impressive music of his own, so let's get into it. SummaryKevin McHale and Austin P. McKenzie discuss their relationship, their experiences in the entertainment industry, and their music collaborations. They talk about their journey in the music industry, including their individual projects and their work together. They also discuss their experiences on shows like Glee, When We Rise, and Drag Race. The conversation highlights the importance of communication, personal space, and the value of their creative collaborations. Overall, the conversation showcases their passion for music, their growth as artists, and their strong bond as a couple. Kevin and Austin discuss their journey in the music industry, the progress they have made, and the importance of being critical and supportive. They also talk about their experiences with album listening parties and the discomfort of receiving attention. The conversation touches on the changes in the music industry and the challenges faced by performers. They share advice for upcoming performers and discuss their upcoming projects. The episode concludes with a discussion about their Christmas traditions and their involvement in the Snixmas fundraiser. Takeaways • Starting a music journey requires incremental progress and the ability to adapt to change. • Being critical and supportive is important in helping artists grow and improve. • Receiving attention can be uncomfortable for some performers. • The music industry has undergone significant changes, including the rise of streaming platforms. • Giving back and supporting charitable causes is important for artists. "When We Rise" Over the course of her career, the New York born Jess Klein has put out nearly fifteen perfect albums. From her Rykodisc debut Draw Them Near in 2000 to other winning entries like 2006's City Garden and 2014's Learning Faith, Klein has demonstrated she's a singer/songwriter of tremendous strength and heart. Blessed with a natural penchant to write hook-filled songs with burning emotional center and big scruffy hearts, her new album When We Rise is another winning entry in her brilliant discography. Redolent with hope, resolve and stability in a world that doesn't stop shaking, When We Rise is a rousing call to arms--from the defiant "You're Never Gonna Break Me" to the stirring "Safe Harbor," this album is a blast of sonic comfort that's fiery, affecting and reviving. www.jessklein.com www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.embersarts.com www.alexgreenbooks.com Stereo Embers Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

On today's episode, we are so honored to have Filipina actress Ivory Aquino grace us with her vibrant energy and help us wrap up Women's History Month. This week also coincides with International Transgender Day of Visibility (March 31st), which celebrates the accomplishments of transgender and gender nonconforming people, while also bringing awareness to the work that is needed to achieve trans justice (GLSEN).  As a trans woman, Ivory describes her childhood as “a push and pull of joy and questioning.” Born and raised in the Philippines, Ivory moved to the US to study at Berklee College of Music. An accomplished singer, dancer, and actor, Ivory is best known for portraying transgender activist Cecilia Chung in the miniseries “When We Rise” and being cast as Alysia Yeoh in DC Film's “Batgirl.” Her powerful stories remind us why it is so important to approach the unknown with curiosity, rather than fear.  For more information on how you can support and donate to the trans community, visit the following resource links: The Trevor Project Human Rights Campaign __________________________________________ Hosts: Melody Cheng, Janet Wang, Helen Wu Contributing Editor: Haemee Kang Editor: Michelle Hsieh __________________________________________ P A R T N E R S • Love & Pies by Trailmix Games: Free to download in the Apple Store or Google Play • Mid Pacific: For more info, visit CapRadio.org and listen wherever you get your podcasts • Liquid IV: Receive 20% off your order using promo code ABG at liquid-iv.com __________________________________________ C O N N E C T W I T H U S • Subscribe and Follow us @asianbossgirl on Apple Podcasts/Spotify/Amazon Music/YouTube/Instagram/Twitter/Facebook • Listener Survey: Let us know your thoughts on the podcast here • Shoutouts: Give a shoutout on the podcast here • Email: hello@asianbossgirl.com __________________________________________ S U P P O R T U S • Merch: asianbossgirl.myshopify.com • Donate: anchor.fm/asianbossgirl/support • More about us at asianbossgirl.com Learn more about your ad choices. On today's episode, we're leaving Porpoise Spit behind and picking up a shift or two at Videodrama, while I revisit an absolutely classic example of Australian cinema, Muriel's Wedding (1994). This movie was written and directed by PJ Hogan (who also directed My Best Friend's Wedding). This movie stars Toni Collette (The Sixth Sense, Hereditary, United States of Tara), Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under, My Best Friend's Wedding, When We Rise), and Bill Hunter (The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert, Strictly Ballroom)PJ Hogan has stated that this is the saddest comedy that you'll ever watch, and I'll at least confess that you'll have some strong feelings while watching this film. If you are at all a fan of any of the lead actors in this movie, do yourself a favor and RSVP to Muriel's Wedding!!Intro/Outro Music: "Phantom Fun" by Jonathan BoyleShow E-Mail: cultcinemacircle@gmail.com Follow Cult Cinema Circle on Instagram, Twitter, and Letterboxd Hosted on Acast. Mary McCormack is one of today's boldest and most versatile actresses, continually challenging herself with roles that often defy Hollywood standards and bring to light the complex lives of ordinary women. The LA Times says, “McCormack has a kind of 20th century sass, a lively impertinence you find in classic Hollywood comedians like Barbara Stanwyck, Irene Dunne and Rosalind Russell.” She has shown her immense talent working in film, television and on stage, and has tackled roles ranging from slapstick comedy to intense drama. Tony-nominated for her role in Broadway's “Boeing Boeing” opposite Mark Rylance, she is also widely known for her four seasons as a regular cast member of “The West Wing" (two SAG Award nominations), as the lead of USA's critically acclaimed “In Plain Sight,” and for her role opposite Howard Stern in Private Parts.  McCormack's recent television work includes starring roles in the ABC series “The Kids Are Alright,” the AMC series “Loaded,” the NBC comedy series “Welcome To The Family” as well as arcs on such shows as HBO's “The Newsroom,” “Scandal” (ABC), Gus van Sant's award-winning miniseries “When We Rise” (ABC), “House of Lies” (Showtime) and the “Will & Grace” reboot (NBC). McCormack will also appear in the new Hulu Blumhouse anthology series “Treehouse.” McCormack can also be seen in the HBO Max feature Unpregnant. In non-scripted, McCormack produces the hit game show “25 Words or Less” alongside Lisa Kudrow and Dan Bucatinsky which was just renewed for a second season. Next up, McCormack can be seen staring in the STARZ series “Heels.”  McCormack returned to the Broadway stage in 2008 to star in “Boeing Boeing” alongside Christine Baranski, Mark Rylance and Bradley Whitford. Marc Camoletti's classic sixties comedy won the Tony for Best Revival and earned McCormack a 2008 Tony nomination for “Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play.” Additional stage credits include a highly successful run opposite Alan Cumming as Sally Bowles in the Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall-directed Broadway production of “Cabaret” for the Roundabout Theatre Company, as well as the acclaimed London stage production of Neil LaBute's play “Bash,” the David Warren-directed productions of “My Marriage To Earnest Borgnine” and Jon Robin Baitz's “A Fair Country.”  McCormack breakout performance, opposite Howard Stern in Private Parts, won her universal critical acclaim. McCormack's additional television and feature credits include: Aaron Sorkin's NBC smash hit “The West Wing,” a recurring role on “ER,” Right At Your Door, the Stephen King thriller 1408, Christopher Guests' “For Your Consideration,” the Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney HBO political series “K-Street,” as Justine Appleton in Steve Bochco's “Murder One,” as well as the USA Network miniseries “Traffic,” directed by Stephen Hopkins (24). In addition, McCormack has appeared in varied roles in such films as Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star opposite David Spade; K-PAX opposite Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey; Full Frontal, directed by Steven Soderbergh and opposite David Duchovny and Catherine Keener; High Heels & Low Lifes with Minnie Driver; Mystery, Alaska, written by David E. Kelley and starring Russell Crowe; Other Voices, with Stockard Channing and Campbell Scott; The Broken Hearts Club, opposite John Mahoney and Timothy Olyphant; The Big Tease opposite Craig Ferguson; Gun Shy with Sandra Bullock and Liam Neeson; the Clint Eastwood film, True Crime; Mimi Leder's Deep Impact; The Alarmist, opposite Stanley Tucci; Father's Day and Miracle on 34th Street. She also appeared in Michael G. Cooney's The Men and the feature film Drone with Sean Bean as well as Amazon's period drama American Girl: Mary Ellen.  Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, McCormack is a graduate of Trinity College and resides with her family in Los Angeles. Michael Kenneth Williams is one of this generation's most respected and acclaimed actors. By bringing complicated and charismatic characters to life—often with surprising tenderness—Williams has established himself as a gifted and versatile performer with a unique ability to mesmerize audiences with his stunning character portrayals.Williams is best known for his remarkable work on THE WIRE. The wit and humor that Williams brought to Omar, the whistle-happy, profanity-averse, drug dealer-robbing stickup man, earned him high praise and made Omar one of television's most memorable characters.Williams also co-starred in HBO's critically acclaimed series BOARDWALK EMPIRE in which he played Chalky White, a 1920's bootlegger; and the impeccably suited, veritable mayor of Atlantic City's African-American community. My guest on this Hometown to Hollywood podcast episode is actor, podcast creator and author Matthew Del Negro. Mathew’s success has been well-earned and slow-burning. He began doing small theatre productions in New York before landing a pivotal role in Season 4 of The Sopranos. Since then his career has spanned theatre, film, and TV, and he is best known for his roles in Goliath, Huge in France, Wind River, Scandal, The West Wing, When We Rise, Hot Pursuit, Teen Wolf, and many more. In 2017, after describing his career as "being told 'No' for a living" when speaking to near-graduates of MFA Theater Programs in Los Angeles, Matthew created and launched his podcast, 10,000 Nos, which can be listened to on the Apple Podcasts App, Spotify and at 10000nos.com. On it, Matthew gets up close and personal with successful people from all walks of life about the 10,000 "No"s they've had to endure and the struggles they've had to overcome on their journey to where they are today. We cover some inspiring territory, including how heartbreak led to an epiphany that started his journey as an actor, what he did to break into the business, advice for auditions and perseverance, and some very powerful mindset advice for success in life as well as in acting. Some of my favorite quotes from our conversation: ·      “It started with a bold proclamation, and commitment.” ·      “Take action now, course correct later.” ·      “If you go in trying to figure out what they want & doing that—even if you get the job—that whole job ends up being miserable, because you never own the character.” ·      “Whenever I’ve been at my best, it’s when I’ve felt, ‘this is my take on the role, & you may like it or not like it, but this is what I’m going to do.’” ·      “It’s not so easy when you have nerves, & you’re in the waiting room & others are sitting there and posturing and getting in your head.” ·      “You need to love the actual work.” ·      “Nobody from my world became an actor.” ·      “My dad would always say, ‘failure is opportunity in disguise.’” ·      “We have to be careful of who we choose to be around, so what we’re getting is lifting us & not crushing us.” ·      “Find your people. Find the people whose values align with you. The people that GET you.” ·      “Find the people who are going to empower you, & challenge you, & inspire you, & introduce you to things you might not have seen before.” ·      “If you are listening to this podcast, you’re doing something right. Bonnie is like a guardian angel.”   Follow Matthew Del Negro HERE: Podcast:          https://www.10000nos.com Website:         https://www.matthewdelnegro.com Instagram:     @mattydel Twitter:          @matthewdelnegro Get his book, 10,000 NOs HERE   Matthew Del Negro spent years in the trenches like so many actors do, learning lessons about how to succeed the hard way. Jonathan Majors approaches every performance with a “tabula rasa,” or blank slate, mentality. “You do so much work creatively, emotionally, physically, spiritually, to prepare for the role,” he says. “But then when you get there, it’s go time.” And only with a strong foundation of training and life experience—knowing one’s craft and oneself—can “go time” be achieved on set. Raised in Texas and discovering theater as a creative outlet while a teenager, Jonathan studied acting at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and Yale School of Drama. Since his big Hollywood break on the limited series “When We Rise,” he’s appeared in films “Hostiles,” “White Boy Rick,” “Out of Blue,” “Captive State,” “Gully,” “Jungleland,” and the award-winning “The Last Black Man in San Francisco.” This year he starred in Spike Lee’s Netflix film about Black Vietnam war soldiers, “Da 5 Bloods,” and led Misha Green’s HBO horror drama “Lovecraft Country” as Atticus “Tic” Freeman. Some spooky classics to get you in the holiday mood, read for you by people who know what it means to spread fear... Dinah Manoff (Maggie Peterson AKA Chucky's first victim in Child's Play) reads Edgar Allan Poe's Tell-Tale Heart, Dylan Arnold (Cameron Elam AKA The Boyfriend in 2018's Halloween) reads Poe's The Raven, And Jim Anderson reads The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. An actor, playwright, coach, and teacher, Dinah’s extensive Broadway credits include I Ought to Be in Pictures (Theater World and Tony Award as Best Featured Actress), Leader of the Pack, Alfred and Victoria, Kingdom of Earth, Gifted Children, and Telegrams From Heaven (Best Director of the Year and playwright). On TV, she was a series regular on Soap, and is best known for her portrayal “Carol Weston,” the character she played for seven years on Empty Nest. She has also appeared in Maid For Each Other (playwright) and the acclaimed ABC family series State of Grace (Jewish Image Award). As a TV director, she has helmed episodes of Sabrina, Movie Stars, Brothers, and numerous episodes of Empty Nest. Film credits include Grease, Ordinary People, Bloodhounds of Broadway, Child’s Play, Staying Together, Backfire, I Ought to Be in Pictures, Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael, and the independent film, Bart Got a Room. When Dylan Arnold was growing up on Bainbridge Island he often said he would live at BPA if he could. And he almost did. From the ages of eight to fifteen he enrolled in almost every theatre class, and appeared in numerous main stage productions. His dedication to acting took him to Idyllwild Arts Academy for high school, and then to the University of North Carolina School for the Arts where he earned his BFA in Drama. Dylan is now a working actor in L.A. and is involved in film, television, and occasionally theatre. Some of his film & TV credits include: Laggies; the ABC miniseries, When We Rise; Mudbound; S.W.A.T.; Halloween & Halloween Kills; Nashville; The Purge TV series; The After Series; and Hulu’s Into the Dark. He also appeared on stage in Good Boys at the Pasadena Playhouse. Dylan would like to give a huge thank you to the entire BPA family for providing a safe, loving environment for him to discover his passion. As you might imagine, there are tons of Jim Andersons in the world. For professional purposes, Jim is James E. Anderson III, but he wants you to know, you can call him Jimmah. Jim lives in the Los Angeles area - his hometown - to which he relocated in 2018 to pursue training, inspiration and employment in the world of acting. He has worked in commercials, independent features, shorts and student films and, most recently, was the voice of the Narrator in the BPA production of “B.I. P.I.” In the age of quarantine, theatres are dark, casting offices are closed and Hollywood is moribund. Writing stories, plays and the obligatory LA pursuit, writing a screenplay, along with creating and self- taping character monologues have kept me in the game. I’m most grateful to BPA, Miranda Feldtman and Liz Ellis for bringing me on board for this project. Viv Leacock is beloved by fans around the world for two very different but equally entertaining roles: Fincher Garland in the Hailey Dean Mystery movies starring icon Kellie Martin, and Gripps, a member of a quartet of bonkers vampires known as the Rowdy Three – think about that math for a second – on BBC America's cult favourite series Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. Although Viv is an accomplished actor (his long list of credits includes Loudermilk, 2012, and When We Rise) and experienced stand-up comedian, he eschews both labels in favour of “entertainer” – and he learned a lot about how to entertain people from his dad, as well as during the four months he spent working with one of his idols, Eddie Murphy, on 2002's I Spy. In this wide-ranging interview, Viv talks about growing up Black in Canada, racist roles, watershed conversations with his West Indian dad, his time on the comedy circuit, his Dirk Gently audition story, and why the character of Fincher Garland is so close to his heart.

After over a decade of assuming key roles on everything from FOX’s EMMY® Award-winning Glee to the acclaimed ABC mini-series When We Rise, Kevin McHale formally introduced himself as an artist in 2019 with an infectious and idiosyncratic take on pop. As a child in Texas, he took the first step towards a life in music. In 2007, he launched his career in the pop group NLT before transitioning to film and television full-time. Beyond memorable spots on the likes of True Blood and The Office, he spent six seasons on Glee as fan favorite Artie Abrams in addition to touring the country in the show’s live production and appearing on the big-screen in Glee: The 3D Concert Movie. During this time, he attracted millions of followers online and garnered nominations at the Teen Choice Awards and beyond. Along the way, he quietly wrote songs and spent countless hours in the studio. Encouraged by NLT collaborator and producer Justin Thorne as well as songwriter Wednesday, he crafted his debut solo EP, Boy — released as the first artist signing for innovative industry platform Vydia in 2019. The project illuminates the nuances of Kevin’s manic love for a wide swath of genres, finding a middle ground between influences as diverse as SZA and nineties pop favorites a la *NSYNC and Britney Spears. Case in point, the first single “Help Me Now” skitters from jubilant funk guitar into swells of eighties style synths punctuated by wild howl. Most importantly, it hints at a lot more to come.
