This week, Spooktober continues with what is widely regarded as one of the most frightening films of all time, as a British master of cinema scares turns his sights to the skies with an eco-horror story that dares to ask... what if birds were jerks? It's 1963's The Birds, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, based on a short story by Daphne du Maurier, and starring Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Jessica Tandy, Suzanne Plechet and a young Veronica Cartwright. Time has not been the kindest to this old girl, as a number of sequences that shocked and frightened audiences back in the day now play as laughably funny a lot of the time. Being a Hitchcock film, there are a handful of transcendently great scenes, but few of them involve dive-bombing birds if we're being honest. I guess you can probably tell we didn't love it. Tune in to hear us justify those feelings! Plus: J Mo's been on a trashy horror kick to get in the Spooky Season mood, and Hayley's got a theatrical field report on the Jason Reitman SNL origin picture Saturday Night. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening us discuss it, The Birds is not currently streaming in Canada at the time of publication, but can likely be rented for free at your nearest public library. Other works discussed in this episode include Scream, Barbarian, Frankie Freako, Psycho Goreman, Hundreds of Beavers, Love and Monsters, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning: Part One, The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie, Friday the 13th Part III, Freddy vs. Jason, Clue, The Nice Guys, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, Breaker High, The Black Phone, They/Them, The Deliverance, The First Purge, The Time Machine (1960), Singin' in the Rain, The Happening, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, The Mummy (1999), Trap, The Lady in the Water, Old, Shaun of the Dead, and The Mist among others. We'll be back next week to wrap up Spooktober with this month's nomination for canon consideration: John Carpenter's The Thing (1982), an absolute Halloween classic with timeless and immaculate creature make-up and practical effects, not to mention an iconic lead performance from the king of cool himself, Kurt Russell. The Thing is not currently streaming in Canada, which really goes to show how much the streaming dream is dead. But you can find it in discount bins at your local retailer I'm sure. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

This week, we're taking up arms against the British and making moves on our dead wife's sister as we get downright independent with 2000's The Patriot, directed by Roland Emmerich, and starring Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, Jason Isaacs, Tom Wilkinson, Joely Richardson, Chris Cooper, Rene Auberjonois, Donal Logue, Adam Baldwin, Gregory Smith and a young Logan Lerman. Try as we might to tie into this week's release of Alex Garland's Civil War, this is a war epic about the War of Independence, and just like Independence Day, when America needed a rousing, slightly fascistic display of patriotism via action cinema, you need the propagandist touch that can only come from a German. This movie is also nearly three hours long, so needless to say, Hayley hated it. Meanwhile J Mo's got a theatrical field report on Sydney Sweeney's latest, Immaculate, and Hayley's getting down with some crunchy sugar cereals. Other works discussed on this episode include The First Omen, The Omen, The First Purge, The Purge, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Dark Side of the Ring, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Ghostbusters (2016), Isle of Dogs, The French Dispatch, Asteroid City, The Royal Tenenbaums, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Moonfall, Small Soldiers, Zodiac, Full Metal Jacket, Firefly / Serenity, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, The Princess Diaries, Waterworld, Escape From New York, the music of Queens of the Stone Age, Ima Robot and Diana Ross & The Supremes, and the video games Spider-Man: Miles Morales and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. We'll be back next week as we stay in the early 2000s with a completely different type of picture: the 2004 rom-com Along Came Polly, an unseen selection from Hayley's collection that packs a dynamite supporting performance from Philip Seymour Hoffman. If you'd like to watch the movie along with us it is currently streaming on Starz in Canada at the time of publication. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Oh boy, let's find out how the Purge began! In this episode, Jordan and Stefan watch "The First Purge," which apparently was an indignity forced upon Staten Island. Hasn't Staten Island suffered enough?

At The Movies...10 Years Later

"This is a million dollar concept in a $300,000 package" IT has been 10 years since the first Purge, but considerably less time since the prequel titled "The First Purge", which makes this whole thing a bit confusing. Listen as we revisit the low-budget, blue balls concept tease that jump-started the whole franchise. We get into rich people home security, socio economics (briefly), our low-stakes purge activities, shitty neighbours, good deeds, awful plans, doomed young love, Hobo Joe and the jug band gang, siege weaponry, haunted house murders, bullshit "carb-less" dinners, creepy masks and the greatest shotgun in cinema history!  (NEXT EPISODE: Man of Steel)

MULTIPLE THIRTY TWENTY TEN FIRSTS THIS WEEK! First up, we have two movies with the same script, the same writer, premiering decades apart! Second, and more tragically, we get to talk about one of the most revered musical biopics in cinematic history in the extremely recent wake of the subject's passing. We're also looking at how Fast and the Furious 2 almost slammed the door shut on one of film's most lucrative franchises while simultaneously paving the way for what's to come. Plus the first Purge (according to release, please don't overthink it), adult animation aplenty, the apex of adventure games, and Game of Thrones most infamous episode!

After a week off we're back, and we're going back in time to see how our latest series started. Mike, Nichole, Rachel and Devaughn are joined by Mike Scott from the Action for Everyone podcast to talk THE FIRST PURGE. In a series that has tiptoed around its politics, this 2018 entry makes the subtext the text and lays out what we've known all along: The Purge was steeped in racism from the get go, and exists to kill of those in need of the social safety net. We hit the racial and class themes hard but also talk about what a fantastic action/horror hybrid this one is.
