It's Frank's turn to be visited by Santa (this time played by Connor), who's brought a little bit of the old dusty trail to our holiday celebration. Frank and Connor are joined by Matt while they discuss 1985's "Silverado!" It's a a classic Western about four unlikely heroes—a calm gunfighter (Scott Glenn), a charming drifter (Kevin Kline), a sharpshooting Black cowboy (Danny Glover), and an energetic young gun (Kevin Costner)—who form a bond and team up to fight corruption and tyranny in the frontier town of Silverado, run by a greedy rancher, crooked sheriff, and somehow Jeff Goldblum as a gambling drifter with a wrist gun. It starts with a gunfight. It ends with a gunfight. There are a bunch of gunfights in between. It's a Holiday Classic!
GRAMMY® Winner, Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Inductee! Happy Holiday's, Merry Christmas!! Featured in the Academy Award Winning Documentary "20 Feet from Stardom", Darlene Has done a LOT!! #1 Hit Make, Actress on Stage & in Motion Picture Blockbusters like the "Lethal Weapon" Movies Rolling Stone Magazine has proclaimed Darlene Love to be “one of the greatest singers of all time” and that certainly rings true, but perhaps Paul Shaffer says it even more concisely: “Darlene Love is Rock N' Roll!” From her first number #1 Hit,"He's A Rebel", through her string of label hits with legendary producer Phil Spector, including "Da Doo Ron Ron", "He's Sure The Boy I Love & "Christmas Baby Please Come Home" a classic she sangs every Christmas season on the "Late Show with David Letterman (it is David's favorite). Darlene on Lead Vocals #1 Hit ~ "He's a Rebel" ~ The Crystals #10 Hit ~ "He's Sure the Boy I Love" ~ The Crystals Darlene solo ~ "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" In December 2010, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" first on its list of The Greatest Rock and Roll Christmas Song, saying that "nobody can match Love's emotion and sheer vocal power." Several of the classic hit song's she sings backup on: Sam Cooke's ~ "Chain Gang", Bobby "Boris" Pickett ~ "The Monster Mash" "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration" ~ The Righteous Brothers "Walking In The Rain" ~ The Ronettes The Beach Boys ~ "In My Room" "Poor Side of Town" ~ Johnny Rivers "Rock and Roll Lullaby" ~ B.J. She has proven herself a talented actress as well, on stage and screen, starring as Danny Glover's wife in all of the LETHAL WEAPON films and lighting-up Broadway in such musicals as GREASE and the Tony-award nominated LEADER OF THE PACK. Darlene Love was just a high school sophomore in Los Angeles when she was discovered out of a gospel choir, and asked to join a burgeoning girl group called The Blossoms, who began recording for Phil Specter. Soon thereafter, other artists like Sam Cooke were attracted to her powerful sound, and sought Darlene on their recordings. With The Blossoms and Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans, Darlene sang lead vocals on some of the greatest music hits of the 60's. The Blossoms landed a weekly spot on the landmark television series SHINDIG & Elvis's 1968 Comeback Special and through the 60's and 70's, Darlene continued to perform with and back-up such diverse artists as The Beach Boys, The Mamas & The Papas, Tom Jones, The Righteous Brothers and Sonny & Cher. THE OLD MAN & THE GUN (2018) feels less like a typical crime movie and more like a gentle farewell not just to a character, but to an entire Hollywood era. Directed by David Lowery, the film stars Robert Redford as Forrest Tucker, a lifelong bank robber whose crimes are defined not by violence, but by charm, politeness, and an irresistible love of the game. As the final entry in our Robert Redford Arc, this episode explores why THE OLD MAN & THE GUN works as a perfect swan song. The film distills everything that made Redford an icon: effortless charisma, moral ambiguity, romanticism without sentimentality, and a deep understanding of aging, obsession, and identity. What emerges is a crime story with almost no tension and yet carries enormous emotional weight. Lowery shoots the film on Super 16mm, giving it the texture and warmth of a 1970s classic, while Redford delivers one of his most restrained and expressive performances. Paired with a beautifully understated turn from Sissy Spacek, and supported by a stacked cast that includes Casey Affleck, Danny Glover, and Tom Waits, the film becomes a meditation on what it means to keep doing the thing you love even when the world tells you it's time to stop. Lethal Weapon (1987)Directed by: Richard DonnerStarring: Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Gary Busey, some guy that awkwardly holds egg nog.Strangely moving into a movie that some might consider a Christmas movie (and I guess we do, or else we wouldn't be talking about it right now) is the venerable Lethal Weapon, where Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are the odd couple of policing. Did this set the stage for just about every buddy cop movie that comes after it. Someone on this show makes that argument. After the obviousness that was all our positive reviews of 1987's original Predator film, we knew that starting this week there would be some chinks in the title character's armor. Predator 2 was released around Thanksgiving in 1990 and even with Jim and John Thomas returning to pen the script, to say it wasn't received nearly as well would be an understatement. This may have to do with changing the director from well renowned action director John McTiernan to Aussie Stephen Hopkins (A Nightmare on Elm Street 5 The Dream Child). But the big change, of course, was changing out muscle bound full of machismo Ah-nold Schwarzenegger to Lethal Weapon's ‘I'm too old for this shit' Danny Glover. Listen to the latest Three Men and a Retrospective Podcast to hear Adam and Garrett recount their theatrical experiences of seeing the film (as Matt laughs at the fact it came out three years before he was born), and of course give their expectations and overall thoughts as they revisit Predator 2 for this long form review. Also, keep in mind that the co-hosts already reviewed the Alien Vs Predator films in the lead up to 2022's Prey (check for those reviews in the archives), so next week's review will be 2010's Predators!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas and can you hear what I hear? I hear it's after Thanksgiving now and I need to fit in some retro review of movies that could really be Christmas movies, just in an action movie's clothing. In this episode, we find “Lethal Weapon” first under the Christmas tree. I mean, the movie has a Christmas song playing over its opening credits for God sakes! “Lethal Weapon” was a surprise action hit in 1987 that paired Mel Gibson with Danny Glover as L.A. detectives Riggs and Murtaugh. The movie started a trend of hundreds of copycat buddy-cop movies faster than Santa deliver presents on Christmas. The “fun” starts in the movie when the daughter of an old Vietnam buddy of Murtaugh's is found dead. As Riggs and Murtaugh investigate into the death further, they uncover a network of bad little elves delivering drugs from overseas for all the bad little boys and girls. All this happening while Murtaugh has to deal with Riggs' reckless, death wish behavior over the death of his wife. Have a Holly Jolly Christmas with this movie! Is this a Christmas movie? Find out on this episode of Movies Merica! “Lethal Weapon” also stars Gary Busey, Mitchell Ryan, Tom Atkins, Darlene Love, Traci Wolfe, Jackie Swanson, Damon Hines, Ebonie Smith, Mary Ellen Trainor, Steve Kahan, Jack Thibeau, Grand L. Sequels we hoped for are coming. HammerofVenus voices McConaughey for the foreseeable future. Naz is excited for what he believes will be the greatest biopic of all time and apparently Predator 2 sucked because there was no Mel Gibson with Danny Glover. Do we agree with that? Many actors have brought Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe to life. Humphrey Bogart, Elliot Gould, Danny Glover, and Liam Neeson are just a few of the men to portray the legendary private eye on the big and small screens, but today we'll hear four actors who played Marlowe on radio. First, Van Heflin is Marlowe in a radio adaptation of Chandler's "Red Wind" (originally aired on NBC on June 17, 1947). Next, Robert Montgomery reprises the role of Marlowe as The Lux Radio Theatre adapts "Lady in the Lake" (originally aired on CBS on February 9, 1948). Dick Powell steps back into the gumshoe's shoes in a Hollywood Star Time presentation of "Murder, My Sweet" (originally aired on CBS on June 8, 1946). Finally, Gerald Mohr proves "crime is a sucker's road" in "The Uneasy Head" (originally aired on CBS on June 6, 1950).

With the massive success of the first film and massive amounts of franchise potential a sequel to the original Predator, Predator 2 released in 1990 was inevitable. Despite lacking some key elements from the first, Arnold Schwarzenegger and a jungle it does mix things up with the inclusion of Danny Glover, an LA in the midst of a heat/crime wave and a new and even more dangerous Predator. It's a fun ride if you arn't expecting exactly the same thing and also like Gary Busey. We want to play a game. That's right, it's time to investigate 2004's Saw - the low-budget sleeper hit that became a phenomenon and kicked off one of the most lucrative horror franchises of the last two decades. But this original entry has some key differences from the majority of its sequels, so join us as we unpack the film we remember this being vs. what it actually is. Topics include: the short film that was sent out with copies of the script, the unusual course of events that led to Danny Glover accepting one of the important supporting roles, some of the major inconsistencies with Jigsaw's methodology, how the abbreviated shooting schedule prevented director James Wan from getting all of the footage he needed, the creative solutions that were employed to patch those holes, why the opening fifteen minutes is still our favorite part of the movie, what we think of the sequels, where the franchise goes from here, and much more! Jason Fraley marks the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act being signed into law on August 6, 1965. It's the perfect day to bring back his 2018 conversation with Emmy-nominated filmmaker Micah Fink when he was crowd-funding for his civil rights documentary “The Power of Protest” where actor Danny Glover chimed in as an official adviser to the film. And just like that, Let's Play Ball! month is sliding into home plate for its final inning here on @wedrinkandwewatchthings! To cap off our month of baseball cinema, we're throwing it back to a pure 90s classic that's equal parts cheesy and incredibly charming: "Angels in the Outfield." Grab your drink, maybe a tissue, and get ready for some feel-good magic. This week, we're wrapping up our baseball journey with the story of a very young Joseph Gordon-Levitt, a perpetually frustrated Danny Glover, and a bunch of very literal angels helping out the worst team in baseball. We'll be talking about the unabashedly sentimental heart of this film, the pure joy of seeing a hopeless team turn things around, and whether you believe in miracles (on or off the field). It's a healthy dose of nostalgia, a sprinkle of fantasy, and a whole lot of that classic Disney warmth. If you grew up watching this one, love a good underdog story with a supernatural twist, or just want to feel like a kid again, then this is your grand slam episode. We're leaning into the sweetness and the silliness, blending our nostalgic memories with our usual casual conversation, making this the perfect, heartwarming conclusion to Let's Play Ball! It truly could happen! This episode VIDEO is live on YouTube AND Spotify!Follow us on Instagram and TikTok to get ep sneak peaks and find out what's coming next. It's the head to head nobody was asking for in 2025. Once again our cultural timing is spot on. This week the boys revisit Antz and A Bug's Life to see which truly is the quintessential CGI-bug movie of the late 90s.Antz is a 1998 American animated adventure comedy film directed by Eric Darnell and Tim Johnson from a screenplay written by Todd Alcott and the writing team of Chris and Paul Weitz. Produced by DreamWorks Pictures, the film stars the voices of Woody Allen, Sharon Stone, Jennifer Lopez, Sylvester Stallone, Christopher Walken, Dan Aykroyd, Anne Bancroft, Danny Glover and Gene Hackman.A Bug's Life (stylized in all lowercase) is a 1998 American animated comedy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures. It is Pixar's second feature-length film, following Toy Story (1995). The film was directed by John Lasseter and co-directed by Andrew Stanton, from a screenplay written by Stanton. It stars the voices of Dave Foley, Kevin Spacey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Hayden Panettiere.
Send us a textKatie and Bridget wave their arms at a baseball game as they re-watch the Disney classic: Angels in the Outfield! Come along as we meet Roger, a foster child living in a temporary home with his BFF J.P, who's also a foster child and it's SAD, GUYS. When his deadbeat dad tells him that they'll only ever be a family again if the California Angels baseball team wins the pennant, Roger prays to God for some help - and he/she listens! For some reason, that prayer gets listened to! Don't! Ask! Questions! Roger and J.P. watch as the Angels begin to win in miraculous ways and they convince the coach that it's angels, which honestly he just radically believes and it's great. This movie brings on all the tears as it asks the deep questions, such as: Why are people so willing to believe in God but not other miraculous things? Why didn't anyone punch Roger's deadbeat dad in the face multiple times throughout this movie? WILL J.P. EVER BE GIVEN THERAPY BECAUSE HE'S CRYING WAY TOO MUCH FOR MY LIKING!? All this and more in this emotionally charged Disney film! Released in 1994, it stars Danny Glover, Brenda Fricker, Tony Danza, Christopher Lloyd, Ben Johnson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Milton Davis Jr., Adrien Brody, Matthew McConaughey, and Dermot Mulroney.
Ian and David aren't too old for this review of Richard Donner's seminal buddy-cop action opus, Lethal Weapon!Mel Gibson and Danny Glover star as Riggs and Murtaugh, two police officers thrown together on a case involving a dead adult film star and her apparent connection to a drug smuggling empire. Riggs has a death wish; Murtaugh wishes his impending retirement would hurry up already. Together, they must survive colorful street thugs, a maniacal henchman played by Gary Busey, and, of course, each other! In this lovingly spoilerific review, the guys compare the theatrical and so-called director's cut of the film (recently released on 4K); look at some of the weird themes running through 80's action movies; and play a fun game of "Six Degrees", tying this film into several other iconic movies from 1987!Show LinksWatch the Lethal Weapon (1987) trailer. You can pick up the recently released 4K version of Lethal Weapon, courtesy of Warner Bros! Forty years ago after half a decade of undeniable success (The Big Chill, Body Heat, Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark) four-time Oscar-nominated writer/directed Lawrence Kasdan cashed in that blank check to make his dream project....and old-fashioned Western. And to do so, he assembled an All-Star cast lead by Kevin Kline, Danny Glover, Kevin Costner, and Scott Glenn for this sprawling tale of corrupt sheriff's, reluctant heroes, land disputes, family vendettas, benevolent bar-matrons, small towns under siege, dangerous posses, and of course lots of shootouts. :) Sadly it got lost in the shuffle of a summer dominated by the likes of Back to the Future and Rambo but forty years later, this remains one of THE premiuer modern westerns. Also co-starring Brian Dennehy, Jeff Goldblum, Rosanna Arquette, and Linda Hunt AND featuring a rip-roaring score from Bruce Broughton (Tombstone), it's time to saddle up and head on out to.....SILVERADO!!!!Host & Editor: Geoff GershonEditor: Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
The journey from NFL superstar to Hollywood actor isn't one many can successfully navigate, but Vernon Davis makes it look effortless. This raw conversation with the Super Bowl champion reveals the mindset that's enabled him to excel across multiple fields. "When I understood how important it was to be selfless and do things for the sake of the team, then I became a better not just a better player, but a better person overall because that shifted over to life," Vernon shares early in our discussion. This philosophy has guided his remarkable transformation from elite tight end to accomplished actor with over 30 credits to his name. What separates Vernon from others attempting similar career pivots is his unwavering commitment to mastery. He describes sneaking away from football practice to attend acting classes at the same theater where Danny Glover trained. Now, five years into working with a dedicated acting coach twice weekly, he's seeing the results of that consistency: "If I'm where I'm at right now, imagine what I'm gonna be at in 10 years." This echoes his football approach, where he was famously the last player off the practice field for 14 straight seasons. Perhaps most valuable is Vernon's wisdom about evaluating opportunities. Rather than focusing on products or concepts, he examines the people involved: "People can make or break you. I don't look at the business or the product—I look at the people who I'm working with." This insight saved him countless headaches, as demonstrated by his grandmother's remarkable ability to spot a dishonest financial advisor who later stole $500,000 from him. Throughout our conversation, Vernon's legacy emerges clearly—a man determined to lead by example in everything he does. Whether catching game-winning touchdowns, starring alongside Morgan Freeman, or building businesses, he approaches each endeavor with the same dedication to excellence.
