Are you enjoying this? Are you not? Tell us what to do more of, and what you'd like to hear less of. The Reykjavík Grapevine's Iceland Roundup brings you the top news with a healthy dash of local perspective. In this episode, Grapevine publisher Jón Trausti Sigurðarson is joined by Heimildin journalist Aðalsteinn Kjartansson and Grapevine friend and contributor Sindri Eldon to discuss the stories making headlines in recent weeks. On the docket this week:✨ A recent program by the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service sheds light on the capture and export of orcas in the 1970s and 1980s. The profits from this trade helped finance the only aquarium ever operated in Iceland—and yes, this is how Keiko (of Free Willy fame) was captured.✨ Icelanders often pronounce “V” and “W” the same way.✨ A tragic rockfall accident occurred last week in south Iceland, near Eyjafjallajökull.✨ We talk about the former Minister of Infrastructure's fingers—for no particular reason.✨ A man was arrested in the small town of Raufarhöfn for stealing a car and driving it while drunk and high. We also discuss a custom 1970s Cadillac that can be found in the same town.✨ Nude tourists in Icelandic hot springs. Occasionally a thing.✨ An American transgender woman was denied asylum in Iceland this week. We explore the hypocrisy of the decision, especially given that Iceland has issued travel warnings for transgender individuals traveling to the U.S.✨ In that context, we discuss how, under the Patriot Act, it has been legal since 2014 for U.S. authorities to detain American citizens on American soil—without due process—if suspected of aiding “the enemy” in the war on terror. We cover recent detentions of foreign travelers and Green Card holders.✨ And finally, Iceland faces the same U.S. tariff rates as... penguins. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------SHOW SUPPORTSupport the Grapevine's reporting by becoming a member of our High Five Club: https://steadyhq.com/en/rvkgrapevine/You can also support the Grapevine by shopping in our online store: https://shop.grapevine.is------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is a Reykjavík Grapevine podcast. The Reykjavík Grapevine is a free alternative magazine in English published 18 times per year, biweekly during the spring and summer, and monthly during the autumn and winter. Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay give each other face-hand waterfalls while talking about one of the most ludicrously unhinged studio films of all-time, 'Face/Off.' Kicking things off in typical John Woo fashion, Andy opens with a story about being in a drunk driving accident that led to a car flying airborne into a body of water. Then the fellas dive right into one of Nicolas Cage's most deranged performances that is somehow equalled in lunacy by John Travolta amping up the "Travoltage" to 11. The wild face-swapping premise is matched by the actions of Cage's Castor Troy who tongue-kisses anything that moves, while groping all backsides in sight. Among the most nonsensical plot holes was the decision to cast Joan Allen as the swaying-booty wife of Travolta's Sean Archer. There may be pacing issues once we hit the high security metal boot prison, but it all makes for a delightfully unforgettable experience including wonderful faceoffs between two of Hollywood's biggest stars who are both fully committed to the bit. "Plan B, let's just kill each other." The movie even ends with Archer emotionally manipulating his family to adopt the son of the man who killed their own child. Be sure to listen to the end to hear our recommendations for movies to pair with this '90s gonzo classic.

The Transport Minister says the Government's more focused on drunk and drugged drivers than speed limits. The Government has reversed the first of 38 speed limit reductions across the country's State Highways. The rest are due to come into force before July, while another 49 sections of road are open for public consultation. Transport Minister Chris Bishop told Mike Hosking his goal is to address what he claims is the number one killer on New Zealand roads: drugs and alcohol. He says the country is being brought into line with other jurisdictions with roadside drug testing and increased breath testing. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Don't Let Drunk Driving Be Your Audition: A Campaign to Curb Road Fatalities by Radio Islam
A 48-year-old Wisconsin man, Scott Farmer, was sentenced to 37 and a half years in prison after his fifth drunk driving conviction led to a crash that killed four siblings. Waupaca County Judge Raymond Huber handed down the sentence on Friday, granting Farmer 342 days of credit for time already served, according to court records. The fatal incident occurred on December 16, 2023, when Farmer drove westbound in the eastbound lane of Highway 10 in Weyauwega. His vehicle collided head-on with a car carrying Daniel Gonzalez, 25; Fabian Gonzalez, 23; and their sisters, Lilian Gonzalez, 14, and Daniela Gonzalez, 9. All four siblings died at the scene. Emergency responders found a large bottle of vodka inside Farmer's truck. During the sentencing, prosecutors presented recordings of jailhouse calls between Farmer and his wife that contradicted his courtroom remorse. While Farmer told the court he wished he had died in the crash and prayed daily for the victims, the calls revealed a different sentiment. Farmer accused the victims' stepfather of running a sex trafficking ring out of his church. His wife reportedly said, "God was working through Scott" on the day of the crash. They also suggested that immigration checks should be conducted at the courtroom door, noting that many of the victims' family members are from Ecuador. Judge Huber condemned the comments as "outrageous" and "offensive to the court." The victims' mother, Paulina Schilling, shared her anguish during the proceedings. "A few days went by, and I had to go see them at the funeral parlor, which was the most heartbreaking day of my life," she said through a translator. "No one can imagine how I felt seeing all of them lifeless on a cot." In August, Farmer pleaded no contest to four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle and one count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated for the fifth time. As part of a plea deal, one other criminal count and four pending traffic citations were dismissed. He was initially arrested on multiple charges, including operating with a revoked license, possessing open intoxicants in a vehicle, reckless driving, and driving the wrong way on a divided highway. According to the criminal complaint, Farmer initially told officers after the crash, "I just spun out" and denied hitting anyone. He became belligerent toward firefighters and attempted to fight hospital staff. Eventually, he admitted to having had "a lot" to drink. Deputies noted that Farmer exhibited signs of severe intoxication, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and difficulty maintaining balance. A blood test revealed his blood alcohol content was .346—more than four times the legal limit of .08 for regular drivers in Wisconsin. Due to his prior convictions, Farmer's legal limit was reduced to .02. Farmer's history of drunk driving spans several decades, with convictions in 1999, 2001, 2006, and 2019. Prosecutors in Minnesota have upgraded charges against Steven Frane Bailey, 56, after he allegedly drove his BMW X5 through the patio of a crowded restaurant, killing two people and injuring nine others. The incident occurred on September 1 at Park Tavern in St. Louis Park, a suburb of Minneapolis. Bailey was initially charged with vehicular homicide and other drunk driving offenses. However, after reviewing surveillance footage, prosecutors added two counts of third-degree murder, citing his "depraved mind" in committing a dangerous act. According to a probable cause affidavit, Bailey hit a parked vehicle in the restaurant's lot before attempting to flee. As he accelerated, his SUV struck another vehicle and plowed through a metal fence into the restaurant's outdoor seating area. Authorities say Bailey showed no signs of braking as he drove through the patio, striking multiple people and tables. “After hitting the Black SUV, defendant accelerates straight past a two-lane drive in the parking lot and 11 parking spaces before plowing his vehicle through a metal fence and into the patio seating area,” detectives wrote. His vehicle finally stopped after hitting two boulders. Among the victims were Kristina Marie Folkerts, 30, who was trapped under the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, and Gabriel Quinn Harvey, 30, who died later at a hospital. According to the affidavit, Bailey stumbled from the car and fell. Officers reported hearing him say, “I'm f—-” and “I'm probably going to jail.” He also claimed he intended to brake but accidentally accelerated. His speech was slurred and his eyes were watery. When informed about the field sobriety tests, Bailey allegedly remarked, “You don't need to do fields, I know what I did.” The affidavit stated that Bailey had a blood alcohol content of .325, which is more than four times the legal limit of 0.08. After being taken to Hennepin County Jail, he was informed of the vehicular manslaughter charges. Bailey allegedly responded, “You've got to be kidding me” and “My life's pretty much f—– now, isn't it?” In addition to the murder charges, prosecutors are seeking an “upward sentencing departure” due to Bailey's five prior drunk driving convictions, his high blood alcohol level, and the presence of children at the restaurant during the crash. The community has rallied around the victims, raising over $200,000 for Folkerts' family through a GoFundMe campaign. Folkerts, a mother of three and a Park Tavern employee, was remembered for her passion for photography and her love for her daughters. Harvey, who worked as a health unit coordinator at Methodist Hospital, was also honored through fundraising efforts. He was set to graduate nursing school in December. Bailey is currently being held on a $500,000 bond at Hennepin County Jail, with a court date set for October 1. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Join Jim and Greg as they still struggle to locate a good martini. Instead, they highlight how Kamala Harris is trying to gaslight Americans about why everything costs so much, the details surrounding Tim Walz's drunk driving arrest back in the '90s, and a Secret Service agent found missing from her post just moments before Trump's arrival at a rally in North Carolina.First, they note Vice President Harris, just like President Biden, is planning to blame high prices on greedy, gouging companies instead of their reckless spending and other inflationary policies. They give Harris a quick review of why costs skyrocketed in the first couple years of the Biden-Harris administration and why demonizing corporate America is not going to help at all.Next, they dig into the details of Tim Walz's 1995 drunk driving arrest for going 96 MPH in a 55 MPH zone. In addition to documenting that Walz lied about it as recently as his 2006 congressional campaign. Jim also points to the final days of the 2000 presidential election to prove that drunk driving arrests can cause serious problems many years later. Finally, they groan as a Secret Service agent was discovered to be away from her post without permission just minutes before Donald Trump arrived for a rally because she was breastfeeding her baby. While they love kids, Jim and Greg don't think bringing kids to your protective detail is a very good idea. And they are stunned that anyone in the Secret Service would be cutting any corners right now. Please visit our great sponsors:Oraclehttps://oracle.com/martiniTake a free test drive of OCI at oracle.com/martini today!Moink Boxhttps://moinkbox.com/martiniSign up today and get free hot rolls in your first box only at moinkbox.com/martini .
