Hello and welcome to another harmonious episode of Bad Dads Film Review! Dads, grab your air guitars, don your freshest 90s threads, and let's explore the collision of music, movies, and some serious sitcom nostalgia.Top 5: Musician Cameos in Movies: Have you ever been watching a movie and suddenly thought, "Wait, isn't that...?" Musicians popping up in our favorite films can be a delightful surprise. From David Bowie in "Zoolander" to Keith Richards in "Pirates of the Caribbean," we'll rank and rave about the most memorable, unexpected, and downright hilarious musician cameos on the big screen. Plus, as Dads, we'll have a few personal stories up our sleeves about explaining to our kids who that “old guy” is playing Jack Sparrow's dad.Movie of the Week: American Utopia: Directed by Spike Lee and featuring the eclectic David Byrne (yes, him again), "American Utopia" is a live Broadway adaptation of Byrne's album and tour of the same name. We'll dive into the visuals, the music, the raw energy, and the impactful themes interwoven throughout this stage-to-screen experience. From sociopolitical messages to heart-pounding choreography, we'll dissect how "American Utopia" creates, well, its own version of Utopia for its audience.Kids TV: The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: Now, this is a story all about how... we get nostalgic about one of the most iconic sitcoms of the 90s. We Dads will not only reminisce about our favorite Fresh Prince moments but also discuss the cultural impact the show had and the lessons it brought to the living rooms around the world. And as we recount the comedic genius of Will Smith and the charm of the Banks family, we'll also touch upon the show's deeper themes of identity, class, and familial bonds.Whether you're in for the musical musings, stage spectacles, or just eager to do the Carlton dance, we've got you covered. Tune into Bad Dads Film Review, where every episode is a mixtape of cinematic insights and Dad-level humor. Time to drop the beat!We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com. For the next episode in the interview series I had a chat with writer Thea Glassman, author of Freaks, Gleeks, and Dawson's Creek: How Seven Shows Transformed Television. She focuses on Fresh Prince of Bel Air, My So Called Life, Dawson's Creek, The OC, Freaks and Geeks, Glee, and Friday Night Lights. We basically just a have a super fun chat about some of our favorite nostalgic moments of late 90s television. My So Called Life, Dawson's Creek, and Freaks and Geeks were the shows we focused on as the others I haven't seen. Although after speaking with her I'm def adding Friday Night Lights to my growing list of classic shows to watch. I discovered so many behind the scenes deets that she uncovered while writing the book. Enjoy! ☕️

They are legends, and for so many who grew up in the ‘90s, important markers of our childhood. If you could ask the stars behind these classics anything—with the purpose of taking conversations in different directions than any they've had before—what would you say? What would you learn? In “Talk ‘90s with Me,” each interview begins by exploring the subject's own ‘90s nostalgia and then poses topics they've never discussed. It creates a blend of memories and analysis that's fresh and unexpected, fun and thought-provoking, silly and profound—offering something new to remember (including exclusive, stump-your-friends trivia!) while honoring the movies and shows you'll never forget.Maybe it feels like getting a drink with the stars; maybe it just feels like the kind of long phone call that people had a lot more in the ‘90s.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/writers-on-film. We are joined in this episode by Writer, Producer, Actor and Mentor, LARRY WILMORE! We discussed what drew Larry to comedy, writing, acting and producing; and, yes, we did talk about the WGA strike; why, as a kid, he was compelled by the work of such greats as Houdini, Buster Keaton, the Marx Brothers and Flip Wilson; rebounding from professional setbacks and keeping a healthy mindset; his thoughts on the "TP&R question" - how to be better at talking about politics and religion across our differences; and we got pretty deep with the concept of consciousness, meaning and why humans have a desire to have a life of meaning. Emmy Award winner Larry Wilmore is a prolific producer, actor, comedian, and writer. He is also the host of the excellent podcast Larry Wilmore: Black on the Air. Larry is perhaps best known for his role as host of Comedy Central's The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore and as the “Senior Black Correspondent” on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Off-screen, Larry serves as co-creator and consulting producer on HBO's Insecure, and helped to launch ABC's black-ish as an executive producer and is a co-creator of the spin-off Grownish. Previously, he has written for In Living Color, The PJ's (which he co-created), The Office (on which he also appeared), and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He also served as creator, writer, and executive producer of The Bernie Mac Show, which earned him his Emmy for “Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series” and a 2001 Peabody Award. In 2016, Larry hosted the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner. Larry is also an author, having released his first book, I'd Rather We Got Casinos and Other Black Thoughts, in January 2009. He called it “pause for the cause,” which means taking a moment to free himself. By pausing and focusing on his breath, he experiences a positive transformation. Craig's negative feelings, like resentment and anger, turned into gratitude and happiness. This shift in his mindset allowed him to approach situations differently, without fear. Whenever he takes this pause, it always works for him, instantly changing the atmosphere and avoiding conflicts. Breathing plays a crucial role in this process, as it brings a sense of calm and clarity. Craig Shoemaker was already practicing this technique even before it became trendy. Thoughts on Breathing When asked about breathing, Craig Shoemaker mentioned that his wife teaches breathwork and has taken him through it. He described breathwork as a powerful experience that makes him feel incredibly high, even more so than drugs. Deep breathing often leads Craig to burst into uncontrollable laughter, which he believes is a form of deep breathing that energizes the body and brings joy. He expressed the importance of laughter and unity among people, highlighting a moment when participants in a course he was involved with were captured laughing together. In addition, Craig emphasized the beauty of collective oneness and encourages people to appreciate and embrace it. Suggested Resources Book: Conversations With God Neil Donald Walsh Book: Lovemaster'd: a digital journey to ultimate love and happiness by Craig Shoemaker App: Craig Shoemaker is releasing his own app called ‘Laughermations'. They will contain funny bits called ‘GiggleBits'. Bullying Story Craig Shoemaker shared a story about his experiences with bullying and how mindfulness could have made a difference. He explained that growing up without a dad made him vulnerable, which unfortunately led to him being targeted by a kidnapper. But apart from that, he also faced intense bullying at school. He described it as being beaten up severely, like a piñata, as if candy would come out of him. It was incredibly painful and humiliating. Craig shared an example from when he joined a football team in eighth grade. Despite being very small in size, he chose to play as a center to feel included. However, the popular guys on the team treated him poorly. They would punch him in the face during huddles and continue to physically harm him in the locker room. They tore his underwear and subjected him to wedgies, making him feel ashamed and unable to confide in his mom. The constant beatings took a toll on him, to the point where he attempted suicide. Craig's intention was not to end his life, but to make those who hurt him feel remorseful. Craig emphasized the importance of mindfulness in such situations, explaining that he would respond with consciousness, evaluation, research, and self-reflection rather than getting trapped in echo chambers or blindly following others' opinions.
