BioDolapo Erinkitola is an established powerhouse in the film and entertainment spaces. With over20 years of experience, the Chicago native continues to create platforms for filmmakers andmusicians to display their creativity. In 2018, he created Dolapo E. Shawn is one of the United States' leading African American film critics. Known for his sharp insight and considerable knowledge of the business side of the movie industry, Edwards has quickly established himself as a respected and trusted critic. Since he began reviewing movies for FOX in 2000, he has been quoted on more than 300 movies. His reviews are on the “Screening Room,” which airs every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday on Fox 4 News or at fox4kc.com. The nationally recognized film critic is also a co-founder of the African American Film Critics Association and is the creator of iloveblackmovies.com. He has written and produced three documentaries about black film: “We Make Movies Too: The 100 Best Black Movies (Ever),” “No Joke: The 50 Best Black Movie Comedies (Ever),” and “Our Heroes: The 25 Best Black Movies (Ever).” He is currently working on his fourth documentary, “The Movies We Love: The 25 Most Romantic Black Movies (Ever),” which will premiere in the summer of 2010.Shawn Edwards also produced “A Celebration of Black Film, " a well-attended film event honoring blacks' historical contributions to cinema. Edwards is also the co-creator of the Kansas City Urban Film Festival, which showcases independent filmmaking by diverse filmmakers from around the world. Shawn began his journalism career as an editor/writer for “The Pitch” in Kansas City, Missouri. He also freelanced for “Vibe,” “The Source” and “XXL” national music magazines where he wrote feature stories about music and movies. He has won numerous journalism awards. In 2009, he was honored by the Los Angeles Press Club and their National Entertainment Journalism Awards as the best film critic on television, an award Edwards also received in 2008 along with his “Screening Room” partner Russ Simmons. Dennis, also known as Mike D or Mike Dee of Reelblack, shared insights into his journey as a filmmaker, educator, and curator in Philadelphia. Dennis, the founder of Reelblack Inc., has been actively involved in the film industry for over two decades. Over the years, Dennis has interviewed various independent and Hollywood personalities, most notably the late Dick Gregory. He has also worked with industry giants such as Bill Cosby, Oprah Winfrey, and Spike Lee. One of Dennis' notable achievements includes serving as the executive producer on the restoration of Sam Firstenberg's 1989 action film, "Riverbend," which starred Steve James and Margaret Avery. The film had its world premiere at the Denton Black Film Festival, showcasing Dennis' commitment to preserving black cinema and telling authentic stories. During the podcast interview with host Floyd Marshall, Dennis shared his early beginnings in the film industry, highlighting his education at New York University and the American Film Institute. His journey led him to work on projects like "Beloved" and collaborate with renowned filmmakers like M. Night Shyamalan. Inspired by the potential of Philadelphia's burgeoning film scene, Dennis believed in the city's ability to carve out its unique identity in the industry. Imposter Syndrome, a phenomenon where individuals doubt their own abilities and fear being exposed as fraud, is a prevalent issue in various industries. In a special edition of "A Conversation With Floyd Marshall Jr," a podcast hosted by Floyd Marshall Jr, some esteemed professionals in the black film industry came together to discuss this topic. The round table included Okema T. Moore, James Moorer, Shakesha Williams, and Stefan LaToure, all of whom shared their experiences and insights on dealing with imposter syndrome in the industry. The Struggles Faced in the Black Film Industry The black film industry, like many other sectors, has its own unique challenges and obstacles. Being a person of color in predominantly white spaces can create feelings of isolation and pressure to prove oneself. The panelists acknowledged Overcoming Imposter Syndrome Despite the difficulties, the panelists shared their strategies for overcoming imposter syndrome. Okema T. Moore emphasized the importance of intentionality and self-reflection. Moore also highlighted the significance of having a supportive community that can provide encouragement and validation. James Moorer, on the other hand, discussed the impact of societal conditioning on imposter syndrome among black individuals. He explained that historical experiences of being told they were not good enough can linger and affect their confidence in professional settings. Moorer stressed the need to redefine personal identity and remember one's worth and capabilities. By understanding who they truly are, individuals can combat the negative self-talk associated with imposter syndrome. Shakesha Williams shared her personal journey as a filmmaker and producer. She emphasized the importance of self-belief and resilience in navigating imposter syndrome. Williams encouraged individuals to embrace their unique perspectives and talents, even if they feel like outsiders in certain spaces. By staying true to oneself, she believes that black creatives can make a significant impact in the industry and pave the way for others. The Power of Representation and Community Throughout the discussion, the panelists recognized the value of representation and community support in combating imposter syndrome. Stefan LaToure highlighted the role of mentors and friends who uplift and remind individuals of their worth. He spoke of his personal experience with Okema T. Moore, who has been a source of encouragement throughout their careers. LaToure stressed the importance of having people who believe in you and help you recognize your own potential. Hollywood's representation of underserved and marginalized populations has been under scrutiny since the first film flickered. Authentic storytelling that fully embraces the complexity and vibrancy of any people must be rooted in, and informed by, those people. Early in the 20th Century, film provided a window to the lives, stories, and narratives of those far and wide. And, as we learned from the comic book industry, with great power, comes great responsibility! Unfortunately, many early filmmakers used this power to further spread inaccuracies and hatred. One of these most famous films is “Birth of a Nation,” D. W. Griffith's 1915 adaptation of the 1905 novel, “The Clansmen.” It tells the story of two families dealing with the fallout of the civil war with a very slanted view. To contrast, early Black filmmaker and novelist Oscar Micheaux wrote and directed the 1919 film “The Homesteader,” which chronicled life for Black Americans during post-civil War, but from an authentic perspective, offering a counter-argument to Griffith and the work of other filmmakers at the time. In this episode of Systemic, our host Dan Kimbrough sits down with Dr. Charlene Regester from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Dr. Regester teaches in the Department of African, African American, and Diaspora Studies, and her work focuses on early black film history, including black filmmakers, actresses, actors, and performers. Our discussion looks at the life and works of Oscar Micheaux and how we almost lost them; the film-going and artistic experience for Black people in the early 20th century; and the lessons filmmakers and society as a whole should learn from these early efforts.

Clive Nwonka and Anamik Saha discuss their forthcoming book Black Film, British Cinema II (publishing in March with Goldsmiths Press), a book which brings together scholars, thinkers and practitioners to consider the politics of blackness in contemporary British cinema and visual practice. Black Film British Cinema II considers the politics of blackness in contemporary British cinema and visual practice. This second iteration of Black Film British Cinema, marking over 30 years since the ground-breaking ICA Documents 7 publication in 1988, continues this investigation by offering a crucial contemporary consideration of the textual, institutional, cultural and political shifts that have occurred from this period. It focuses on the practices, values and networks of collaborations that have shaped the development of black film culture and representation. But what is black British film? How do such films, however defined, produce meaning through visual culture, and what are the political, social and aesthetic motivations and effects? How are the new forms of black British film facilitating new modes of representation, authorship and exhibition? Explored in the context of film aesthetics, curatorship, exhibition and arts practice, and the politics of diversity policy, Black Film British Cinema II provides the platform for new scholars, thinkers and practitioners to coalesce on these central questions.
