PUT YO WEIGHT ON IT! Yessir, the bag has brought us back to the realm of Rudy Ray Moore and out of all the movies he has, I think this may be the weirdest one. In 1979, disco was not looked at as fondly, so I like to look at this film as a bookend of not only, the Rudy Ray Moore Quadrilogy, not only of the disco era but also as a bookend to the so called "Blaxploitation" boom of the 70's. Screenwriting Legends SCOTT ALEXANDER and LARRY KARASZEWSKI discuss their origin stories of being film nerds, drive-in movies, how looking on the back of Variety was glorious when they were kids, how Shakey's Pizza's silent movies influenced them, meeting the first hour at school and deciding to go to the Nuart Theater in Los Angeles, why they program screenings including The Wrong Guy, what makes a good story from real life, why offbeat losers make better subjects than heroes, how directors like Tim Burton are loyal to the script and love stories of art and outsiders, why awards are fun but stupid, their process of deciding on ideas in a shockingly random way, sinking time into ideas that go nowhere, the amazing Marx Brothers movie that can't seem to get made, how they can't shake a movie once they love it, how producers are just as stupid as they are, whether everyone has a movie in their lives and why someone doesn't make a bio movie about them, and how pickleball can save your life! Bio:SCOTT ALEXANDER and LARRY KARASZEWSKI met when they were freshman roommates at USC's School of Cinema. On a whim, they wrote a screenplay during their senior year, which sold a week after graduation. They are best known for writing very unusual biopics with larger-than-life characters. They wrote the highly-acclaimed ED WOOD, for which they were nominated for Best Screenplay by the Writers Guild. They followed this with THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT, for which they won the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay, as well as a special Writers Guild award for civil rights and liberties. They scripted the extremely postmodern MAN ON THE MOON, the life story of Andy Kaufman. They wrote BIG EYES, the strange-but-true story of Margaret and Walter Keane, for which they received an Indie Spirit Best Screenplay nomination. For their first television project, they created the hit miniseries AMERICAN CRIME STORY: THE PEOPLE V. O.J. SIMPSON, for which they won the Emmy, Golden Globe, PGA and WGA Award for Best Limited Series. Their most recent film, DOLEMITE IS MY NAME, is the celebrated tale of Rudy Ray Moore. Other than biopics, Alexander and Karaszewski are quite eclectic. They wrote the hit Stephen King adaptation 1408. They produced the Bob Crane biopic AUTO FOCUS, and they wrote and directed the comedy SCREWED. They have also written numerous family films, including PROBLEM CHILD, PROBLEM CHILD 2, AGENT CODY BANKS, and GOOSEBUMPS. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode of “Normal World,” Dave Landau, 1/4 Black Garrett, and Angela open with headlines about Kevin Federline worrying over Britney Spears before moving through a fast mix of pop culture, news, and sharp comedy. They trade stories from their early days in Chicago comedy, reflecting on clubs like Zanies and Appleton, wild audiences, and how Midwest weather fuels bad moods and great jokes. The team breaks down Portland's naked bike ride and the odd logic of modern protest, then jumps into Utah's culture of repression and religion. The tone turns darker when they react to Danny Masterson's prison transfer, with Robert offering real insight from his time as a jail guard, sharing absurd and disturbing moments from behind bars. They explore the case of an Arkansas father who killed his daughter's attacker and is now running for sheriff, debating justice and moral boundaries. The conversation deepens as Robert recounts a violent tragedy near his mother's Chicago home, before lifting the mood with a tribute to movie-poster icon Drew Struzan and a skeptical look at the new Bruce Springsteen biopic. The show closes with a nod to the legends of comedy, from Eddie Murphy and Bernie Mac to Rudy Ray Moore, and how their storytelling still shapes stand-up today. We're celebrating our 10th anniversary all year by digging in the vaults to re-present classic episodes with fresh commentary. Today, we're revisiting our 2015 conversation with Swamp Dogg.  ABOUT SWAMP DOGGR&B cult favorite Jerry “Swamp Dogg” Williams is best known as the co-writer, with Gary U.S. Bonds, of the cross-genre classic, “She's All I Got,” which became a Top 10 R&B single for Freddie North and a #2 country hit for Johnny Paycheck in 1971. Tracy Byrd recorded it in 1996, hitting #4 on Billboard's Country rankings and introducing the song to a new generation of fans. Williams' career began in 1954 when, at the age of 12, he made his first record, “HTD Blues.” He found success in the 1960s, recording the Top 40 R&B hit “Baby You're My Everything” under the name Little Jerry Williams, and writing songs for other artists, including Gene Pitney's Top 20 Pop single, “She's a Heartbreaker.” He became Atlantic Records' first African American staff producer in 1968, but left the following year to pursue independent projects in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. By the 1970s he was an in-demand producer and songwriter, penning Top 40 R&B hits for Doris Duke, Arthur Conley, and Dee Dee Warwick. Around the same time, he reinvented himself as Swamp Dogg, releasing a series of eccentric deep soul albums whose gonzo lyrics were marked by frank sexuality, biting satire, radical politics, and provocative social observations. His debut LP, Total Destruction to Your Mind, was eventually certified Gold, while subsequent releases, including Gag a Maggott, I'm Not Selling Out – I'm Buying In, An Awful Christmas and a Lousy New Year, and The White Man Made Me Do It have earned considerable accolades among underground music lovers and earned Swamp what one journalist described as “a cultural niche somewhere between Rudy Ray Moore and Frank Zappa.” In recent years, his vast catalog has been sampled by Kid Rock, Talib Kweli, DMX, and others.

DJ Hollywood, born Anthony Holloway on December 10, 1954, in Harlem, New York, is a pioneering American MC and disc jockey whose innovative style in the 1970s significantly influenced the evolution of hip-hop music. In the early 1970s, DJ Hollywood began performing DJ sets that incorporated rhythmic call-and-response interactions with his audience. Unlike earlier MCs who primarily spoke over tracks, he introduced rhythm and rhyme into his performances, laying the groundwork for what would become hip-hop-style rapping. His approach drew inspiration from figures like Jocko Henderson, Pigmeat Markham, Gil Scott-Heron, and Rudy Ray Moore. By 1978, DJ Hollywood made history as the first DJ to bring turntables and a mixer to the Apollo Theater. His popularity soared, leading to performances at venues like Club 371 in the South Bronx. Although much of his work was live and not recorded, he did release the single "Shock Shock The House" in 1980 under CBS Records. Throughout the early to mid-1980s, he remained a dominant figure in the DJ scene. After a hiatus due to personal challenges he left the music scene for a short period of time. However, DJ Hollywood returned to the music scene, performing in the New York City area and reuniting with former partner Lovebug Starski as part of Tha Veteranz. DJ Hollywood's contributions have been acknowledged in various media, including the 2024 PBS series "Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution," which explores the cultural impact of disco music.

Well, let us copy and paste the write up from the official Severinfilms.com website where this movie is available to purchase, because we are to lazy to write something up ourselves and theirs is way better : From the deepest, darkest depths of the shot-on-video vaults… Hidden from view for 30 years… All your favorite movie monsters are back… And they're ready to party like it's 1990! Franky, Drak, Wolfy, Mummy and Humper – the horny hunchback – descend on the tiny mining town of French Gulch in search of lost gold, but it's Halloween Night, and the monsters soon find themselves caught up in the debaucherous festivities of the local townsfolk. Will Franky and His Pals find the gold? Will they learn the ways of love? Will Drak quench his thirst for human blood? Just how explosive is Franky's flatulence? What's that Mad Scientist tinkering on out in his barn? What the hell is a pee-pee? And does any of it really matter? Directed by veteran grindhouse and adult film producer Gerald Cormier (TERROR CIRCUS a.k.a. BARN OF THE NAKED DEAD, 101 ACTS OF LOVE) and seldom-seen beyond the shelves of small-town video shops, this bizarro monster-comedy is finally being resurrected on DVD and is positively exploding with spooky Special Features! And since I copy and pasted all that from Severin, the least I can do is also add the link so you can buy the movie : TAP HERE FOR THE MOVIEDive into the monster mash with your host Harry-Scott Sullivan and kick back and relax with this hoot and an additional hollar of an episode. New interview with Samm Deighan - noted film historian and host of the Eros + Massacre podcast. Some of you may have heard this before, Samm was kind enough to let us repost the audio from our conversation about Michele Soavi. If you have not heard her podcast yet you can get a sample here, she was nice enough to invite me on as a first guest. Since then she has covered Funeral Parade of Roses, sexual anarchist Rudy Ray Moore, blu-ray anarchist Adam Torel of Third Window films, a Bava episode, plus a conversation with Fabio Frizzi. I love what her show has become and hope this serves as a good sample.Either way, please enjoy this. I hope my love for Michele Soavi and Italian genre cinema shines through. Looking forward we have some very exciting guests that are just getting scheduled, so the fall season will see a bunch of activity again after a brief time away. Dolemite is a 1975 American blaxploitation crime comedy film and is also the name of its principal character, played by Rudy Ray Moore, who co-wrote the film and its soundtrack. Moore, who started his career as a stand-up comedian in the late 1960s, heard a rhymed toast about an urban hero named Dolemite from a regular at the record store where he worked, and decided to adopt the persona as an alter ego in his act.

[This episode contains some adult language.] This is the story of the search for Bigfoot as conducted by the NORTH AMERICAN WILDLIFE RESEARCH CENTER. (Which sounds a lot like the real Bigfoot research group North American Wildlife Research Team that famously setup the only permanent Bigfoot trap maintained by the national park service.) But while a lot of the stuff in this film sounds real - the whole thing is made up. The IMDB page gives you the details on the cast. A very good widescreen version of the movie is available streaming on Amazon. (Affiliate Link) The film follows a team of investigators who travel for months into British Columbia on horseback to find the secret valley of the Bigfoot where they will radio-tag a creature for study. Along the way they will tell Bigfoot stories and watch stock nature footage play out to a Jaws-derivative soundtrack.  If that sound sketchy, keep in mind their whole trip was planned by computer. The computer even gave them a sketch of what they should be looking for! The party of adventurers heads off into the wilderness. They will encounter many shadowy creatures along the way. They will try to out-science Bigfoot. Good luck with that. This is a historically significant film in some ways - and has led to some interesting research which will be discussed in a near-future episode of the regular show. I'm still digging. I included a brief snippet from the Eddie Murphy Biopic Dolemite Is My Name, which tells the story of Rudy Ray Moore. I loved this movie and recommend the biopic which is streaming on Netflix. It's 1975 and we're reviewing one of the biggest surprise hits of that year... Rudy Ray Moore's Dolemite! He's a stand-up comedian who co-wrote, produced, and semi-directed his own blaxploitation crime movie. It's filled with flat line deliveries, cameos from multiple boom mics, a plot that is pretty hard to follow, and heaps more karate than either of us were expecting.Join our Patreon for TWO bonus episodes each month! https://www.patreon.com/oldiebutagoodiepodFollow the show!Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oldiebutagoodiepod/Facebook: https://fb.me/oldiebutagoodiepodPodcast Platforms: https://linktr.ee/oldiebutagoodiepodGot feedback? Cooper and Nolan are making a deal with the devil this week, when they cover the remarkable tale of PETEY WHEATSTRAW! Podcast favorite Rudy Ray Moore puts his unique spin on the Faustian legend in this unforgettable piece of Blaxploitation filmmaking, and the results are as silly, sexy, and surreal as you would expect.  Not surprisingly, the guys have a lot of fun with this one, as they debate whether creativity can win out over an extremely limited budget, what exactly constituted proper funeral attire for the 1970s, and whether or not this movie was a good choice for Black History Month. With all that AND the incredible comedy stylings of Leroy & Skillet, this episode (featuring a beer from Clifford Brewing Co.) is one you won't have to sell your soul to enjoy.

Craig Brewer (Director/Producer) began his career as a filmmaker in Memphis, Tennessee. While working at Barnes & Noble, he learned camera and editing techniques from books he purchased with his employee discount. In 2000, he made his first feature film, THE POOR & HUNGRY, which won Best Digital Feature at the 2000 Hollywood Film Festival. Brewer's second film, HUSTLE & FLOW, starring Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, was produced by Stephanie Allain and the late John Singleton. The film premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival, winning the Audience Award for Best Feature. The film secured a record-breaking acquisition deal by Paramount Pictures and MTV Films. It garnered an Academy Award nomination for lead actor Terrence Howard and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song: Three 6 Mafia's "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp." Brewer's third film, BLACK SNACK MOAN, starred Samuel L. Jackson, Christina Ricci, and Justin Timberlake. The film premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and was released in theaters by Paramount Pictures. In 2011, Brewer directed the remake of FOOTLOOSE for Paramount and produced the concert documentary KATY PERRY: PART OF ME. Moving into Television, Brewer directed the pilot to TERRIERS, which ran for one season on FX. He then re-teamed with Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, directing ten episodes on their hit TV series, EMPIRE. In 2018, Brewer began his collaboration with Eddie Murphy on two films. The first, DOLEMITE IS MY NAME, based on the life of Rudy Ray Moore, won The Critic's Choice Award for Best Comedy, an NAACP Award for Best Independent Film, and earned Eddie Murphy a Golden Globe Nomination for Best Actor.Next was the highly anticipated sequel, COMING 2 AMERICA. The film was produced by Paramount and released by Amazon Studios in 2020, becoming the most streamed movie for Amazon ever.Enjoy my conversation with Craig Brewer.
