Episode 203: The Last Duel and Benedetta

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 14, 2022 100:42

Hey film buds, We're continuing this week to review as many of the movies of 2021 that we missed last year. Of which, there are many. For this episode we're looking at how two very different, but very distinct, directors handle history. Our first film this week is Ridley Scott's The Last Duel, written by Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Nicole Holofcener. The movie is a gritty tale about male ego, pride, ownership, perception, and the consequences of action. Ridley is a meticulous director, and this film is no exception. Second, we're looking at Paul Verhoeven's Benedetta. Verhoeven is known for his dramatic, intense, and sometimes unsubtle satirist most known for his modern and sci-fi features. With Benedetta, he takes the story of a real life nun and uses it for inspiration for a slightly different take on history. Joining us for the conversation is friend of the show, Madelaine, who was incredibly insightful and a joy to have back on. Be sure to also check out our episodes on Showgirls and Tampopo. Hey there film buds, Though people often associate silent film with the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Greta Garbo, it encompassed as wide a range of genres and styles as film today. That includes the Horror genre. Horror, like much of the Silent Era, often relied on established ideas from literature and the stage. Since we recently dove deeper into film history with episodes covering horror and drama in the 30s and 40s and teenagers in movies of the 50s, we decided to present you with Silent Horror Film. Specifically chose films as a part of the German Expressionist movement, including FW Murnau's Nosferatu from 1922 and Robert Wiene's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari from 1920. The style became synonymous with the Horror genre and was later used in other films, like the Universal Studios monster films and more. You can read more about the Expressionist movement here. Joining us in our discussion this week is friend of the show Sky Tilley and first time guest Madelaine Davis. Madelaine is a published writer, editor, marketing expert, and semi-professional athlete. Hey film buds, Welcome to a very special Film Buds' October! All month long, we're going to be bringing y'all the horror film content you could want, and it begins here with Episode 188. Lauren had not selected the movies for an episode, so I turned the decision making process over to her, and she chose Grindhouse (2007), a fun Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino mash-up movie, featuring two films in one: Planet Terror and Death Proof. The films and their presentations are an homage to the cheaply made, high shock-value films of the 70s. Though neither of these films are made on the shoe-string of a true grindhouse film, they meticulously recreate the experience with everything from “Missing Reels” to the so-called china dolls in the end credits. They even invited guest directors Rob Zombie, Edgr Wright, and Eli Roth to direct several trailers within the film presentation. We hope that you enjoy the episode and join us throughout the month as we bring you more horror and Halloween content. Keep it spooky, PaulPS Here's a link to the essay on Slashers I mentioned. Our Kinda Like New movies are Candyman (1992) and The Adjustment Bureau (2011). This episode is a check for horror, sci-fi, and adaptation fans. Fair warning, we do discuss the controversial and potentially triggering nature of Philip K. Dick.
