“Based on a true story” movies: some love them, some hate them. In recent years, these movies have become more cookie-cutter and cliché leading some people to lose interest in the entire concept. Then comes the subject of today's review, ‘Roofman', a movie that proves not all “based on a true story” concepts are created equal.   This one focuses on a fugitive who makes his living robbing fast food restaurants and lives within a Toys ‘R' Us. With a critically acclaimed director Derek Cianfrance at the helm and a cast that includes Channing Tatum, Kirsten Dunst, Lakeith Stanfield, and others, there are plenty of reasons to view this movie with optimism. In our spoiler-free Roofman review, we'll let you know if that optimism is valid or misplaced.   Show Open [00:00] Review [04:53] Show Close [18:20]   Thanks for listening!   Please rate, review, and subscribe if you liked this episode!   For all things Popcorn for Breakfast: https://linktr.ee/popcornforbreakfast   Chat with us on Discord: https://discord.gg/7wGQ4AARWn Follow us on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/popcornforbreakfast Subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeVJZwPMrr3_2p171MCP1RQ Follow us on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4HhMxftbuf1oPn10DxPLib?si=2l8dmt0nTcyE7eOwtHrjlw&nd=1 Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/popcorn4breakfast Follow us on Twitter: @pfb_podcast Follow us on Instagram: @pfb_podcast Follow us on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@popcornforbreakfast? popcorn4breakfast.com Email us: contact@popcorn4breakfast.com   Our original music is by Rhetoric, check them out on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/44JvjuUomvPdSqZRxxz2Tk?si=hcYoSMLUQ0iPctllftAg2g&nd=1

Some musicians do better with chaos. Others under deadlines and with teams. Tristan Clopet is a rare pro who's done both, and because of it knows the value of working towards a greater goal with a big team (and bigger pressure).Tristan's prolific work on film and TV scores gives him a deep insight into the nature of that side of the industry (and how different it is from his touring days supporting X Ambassadors, Billy Bragg, Tove Lo, Glen Hansard, and The Weeknd). It's a collaborative, deadline-oriented, large effort, with hundreds of creatives contributing to the final work. He shares how inspiring that journey is, and how knowing the boundaries can unlock even more creativity. I loved his story about scoring to Martin Freeman's solo acting in a car. (Martin Freeman happens to be one of my favorite actors.)His credits include:Sony Pictures Television's StartUp, created by Ben Ketai and starring Martin Freeman, Ron Perlman, Adam Brody, Mira Sorvino, and Edi Gathegi. We'll spin around and wag our tails for a treat -- we're kinda shameless that way here at Breakfast All Day. October begins with reviews of three very different films: GOOD BOY, a lean and clever horror movie told from a dog's perspective. Indy, who's director and co-writer Ben Leonberg's own retriever, is actually the best boy. And in case you're worried: He's OK at the end. In theaters. PLAY DIRTY, a listless action comedy from director and co-writer Shane Black, who's had a much better track record with this kind of movie in the past ("Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," "The Nice Guys"). Mark Wahlberg and LaKeith Stanfield lead an ensemble cast. Streaming on Prime Video, but you should avoid it. ARE WE GOOD?, an intimate documentary that looks at the life and career of comedian and "WTF Podcast" host Marc Maron. In particular, it focuses on how he's working through grief after the death of his girlfriend, filmmaker Lynn Shelton. We liked this. In theaters. Next week is nuts, with about eight movies coming out that have awards potential, or at least year-end buzz. So keep your ears open, and we'll help guide you through this busy time. Thanks for being here. Subscribe to Christy's Saturday Matinee newsletter: https://christylemire.beehiiv.com/

The underworld is crowded with thieves, but Parker has always stood apart. Created by Donald Westlake in the early 1960s, the character has been portrayed on screen by actors including Lee Marvin, Mel Gibson, and Jason Statham. He's a blunt-force professional who isn't Bond, isn't Batman, but something rougher, hungrier, and coded by his own ruthless blue-collar sense of order. With "Play Dirty," filmmaker Shane Black takes his own crack at Parker, bringing the character to Prime Video on October 1 and casting Mark Wahlberg in the role. The film follows Parker, a ruthless thief, and his expert crew who stumble onto the heist of a lifetime that pits them against the New York mob. The film also stars LaKeith Stanfield, Rosa Salazar, Keegan-Michael Key, Nat Wolff, and more. This version doesn't come with gadgets or acrobatics. Black describes a Parker who thinks fast, hits harder, and feels closer to the blue-collar world than to the spy fantasy. It's the kind of material that lets him indulge his taste for pulp grit, sly humor, and the holiday backdrop he's made famous. But it also opens the door to some bigger questions: what draws audiences to men this uncompromising? How do you make crime fun without sanding off the edges? And what happens when you cast Wahlberg instead of Robert Downey Jr.?READ MORE: ‘All Of You': Brett Goldstein On Love, The Science of Soulmates, ‘Shrinking' Surprises, & ‘Ted Lasso' [The Discourse Podcast]Writer/Director Shane Black joins The Discourse to talk about the journey of bringing his Parker film to the screen, which started all the way back during the making of Black's first film, “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang” in 2005. When asked what itch hadn't been scratched by earlier adaptations, Black pointed to Parker's uniqueness. “Each one represents the era in which it was produced. 'Point Blank' with Lee Marvin is a very specific film for that time period. And each actor who's played Parker from there on, like Robert Duvall, Jason Statham, and Mel Gibson in "Payback." There has been a history of incarnations of this powerful, relentless character. But he's not James Bond, which is why I liked him. He's sort of blue collar. It's almost like an American entrepreneur's story. But he happens to be a really awful, bad person and a criminal anti-hero.”

Dana and Tom with 5x Club member, Sarah Duncan, and new guest, Liz Arnold (Liz and a Movie), discuss the 2019 whodunnit, Knives Out for its 5th Anniversary: written and directed by Rian Johnson, music by Nathan Johnson, starring Daniel Craig, Ana De Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, LaKeith Stanfield, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Michael Shannon, and Christopher Plummer.Plot Summary: Rian Johnson's Knives Out is a gleeful whodunit that reinvents the genre while paying homage to its classical roots. Set against the backdrop of a sprawling Gothic mansion, the film begins with the suspicious death of Harlan Thrombey, a wealthy mystery writer, after a family gathering. Enter Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), a gentleman detective with a syrupy Southern drawl and an eye for deceit. What unfolds is a deliciously twisty investigation into Harlan's eccentric and entitled family, each of whom has motives aplenty. Blanc's razor-sharp intuition and eccentric charm lead him through the maze of alibis and half-truths spun by the quarrelsome Thrombeys. At the heart of the mystery is Marta Cabrera, Harlan's devoted nurse, whose genuine care for her employer is her saving grace—or perhaps her undoing. As the layers of this intricate puzzle peel away, Marta's role becomes pivotal, bringing to light the dark undercurrents of greed and betrayal lurking beneath the family's polished veneer.Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome to Our Guests01:32 Getting to Know Liz Arnold03:47 Cast and Recognition for Knives Out06:17 Personal Connections to 'Knives Out'09:53 What is Knives Out About?13:56 Knives Out's Effect on the Mystery Genre21:30 Plot Summary for Knives Out23:00 Did You Know?24:33 First Break25:18 What's Happening with Sarah and Liz27:07 Ask Dana Anything35:07 Best Performance(s)44:55 Best/Favorite/Indelible Scene(s)53:41 Second Break54:44 In Memoriam55:27 Best/Funniest Lines59:43 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy01:06:09 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance01:10:23 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty01:15:10 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness01:18:37 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability01:22:48 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total01:23:58 Remaining Questions for Knives Out01:32:14 Thank You to Our Guests01:34:12 CreditsYou can also get this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast).For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/knives-out-2019-ft-sarah-duncan-and-liz-arnoldFor the entire rankings list so far, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/greatest-movie-of-all-time-listKeywords:Knives Out, mystery genre, film review, Rian Johnson, movie analysis, character dynamics, audience reception, film performances, cinematic themes, podcast, Knives Out, film analysis, character performance, best scenes, family dynamics, final reveal, legacy, humor, audience reception, novelty, classicness, rewatchabilityRonny Duncan Studios

We did it! In the 200th episode of the show we gathered together with a panel of all-star co-hosts to talk about the namesake of the show, the Safdie Brothers' Uncut Gems. In this show we reminisce for a little while about our journey with this podcast, reveal some of our plans for the future and also, naturally, talk about the movie. We talk about Adam Sandler in "serious" movies, how the film's frenetic style makes Uncut Gems and experience, how difficult it is to keep Sandler and Kevin Garnett in the frame together, and how this is the remake of The Gambler the world deserved. We also talk about Howard keeping a change of clothes in his car in case he ends up locked in the trunk naked, Lakeith Stanfield in his glow-in-the-dark hoodie as a visual standout and how it is definitely a red flag when your girlfriend gets your name tattooed on her ass as a surprise. Tune in and enjoy this momentous occasion with us!
